Magnetically tunable bidirectional locomotion of a self-assembled nanorod-sphere propeller.

ABSTRACT: Field-driven direct assembly of nanoscale matter has impact in disparate fields of science. In microscale systems, such concept has been recently exploited to optimize propulsion in viscous fluids. Despite the great potential offered by miniaturization, using self-assembly to achieve transport at the nanoscale remains an elusive task. Here we show that a hybrid propeller, composed by a ferromagnetic nanorod and a paramagnetic microsphere, can be steered in a fluid in a variety of modes, from pusher to puller, when the pair is dynamically actuated by a simple oscillating magnetic field. We exploit this unique design to build more complex structures capable of carrying several colloidal cargos as microscopic trains that quickly disassemble at will under magnetic command. In addition, our prototype can be extended to smaller nanorods below the diffraction limit, but still dynamically reconfigurable by the applied magnetic field.

Chiral plasmonics of self-assembled nanorod dimers.

Project description:Chiral nanoscale photonic systems typically follow either tetrahedral or helical geometries that require four or more different constituent nanoparticles. Smaller number of particles and different chiral geometries taking advantage of the self-organization capabilities of nanomaterials will advance understanding of chiral plasmonic effects, facilitate development of their theory, and stimulate practical applications of chiroplasmonics. Here we show that gold nanorods self-assemble into side-by-side orientated pairs and "ladders" in which chiral properties originate from the small dihedral angle between them. Spontaneous twisting of one nanorod versus the other one breaks the centrosymmetric nature of the parallel assemblies. Two possible enantiomeric conformations with positive and negative dihedral angles were obtained with different assembly triggers. The chiral nature of the angled nanorod pairs was confirmed by 4? full space simulations and the first example of single-particle CD spectroscopy. Self-assembled nanorod pairs and "ladders" enable the development of chiral metamaterials, (bio)sensors, and new catalytic processes.

Tunable self-healing of magnetically propelling colloidal carpets.

Project description:The process of crystallization is difficult to observe for transported, out-of-equilibrium systems, as the continuous energy injection increases activity and competes with ordering. In emerging fields such as microfluidics and active matter, the formation of long-range order is often frustrated by the presence of hydrodynamics. Here we show that a population of colloidal rollers assembled by magnetic fields into large-scale propelling carpets can form perfect crystalline materials upon suitable balance between magnetism and hydrodynamics. We demonstrate a field-tunable annealing protocol based on a controlled colloidal flow above the carpet that enables complete crystallization after a few seconds of propulsion. The structural transition from a disordered to a crystalline carpet phase is captured via spatial and temporal correlation functions. Our findings unveil a novel pathway to magnetically anneal clusters of propelling particles, bridging driven systems with crystallization and freezing in material science.

Self-assembled tunable photonic hyper-crystals.

Project description:We demonstrate a novel artificial optical material, the "photonic hyper-crystal", which combines the most interesting features of hyperbolic metamaterials and photonic crystals. Similar to hyperbolic metamaterials, photonic hyper-crystals exhibit broadband divergence in their photonic density of states due to the lack of usual diffraction limit on the photon wave vector. On the other hand, similar to photonic crystals, hyperbolic dispersion law of extraordinary photons is modulated by forbidden gaps near the boundaries of photonic Brillouin zones. Three dimensional self-assembly of photonic hyper-crystals has been achieved by application of external magnetic field to a cobalt nanoparticle-based ferrofluid. Unique spectral properties of photonic hyper-crystals lead to extreme sensitivity of the material to monolayer coatings of cobalt nanoparticles, which should find numerous applications in biological and chemical sensing.

Tunable Pentapeptide Self-Assembled β-Sheet Hydrogels.

Project description:Oligopeptide-based supramolecular hydrogels hold promise in a range of applications. The gelation of these systems is hard to control, with minor alterations in the peptide sequence significantly influencing the self-assembly process. We explored three pentapeptide sequences with different charge distributions and discovered that they formed robust, pH-responsive hydrogels. By altering the concentration and charge distribution of the peptide sequence, the stiffness of the hydrogels could be tuned across two orders of magnitude (2-200 kPa). Also, through reassembly of the β-sheet interactions the hydrogels could self-heal and they demonstrated shear-thin behavior. Using spectroscopic and cryo-imaging techniques, we investigated the relationship between peptide sequence and molecular structure, and how these influence the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. These pentapeptide hydrogels with tunable morphology and mechanical properties have promise in tissue engineering, injectable delivery vectors, and 3D printing applications.

Antiviral fibrils of self-assembled peptides with tunable compositions.

Project description:The lasting threat of viral pandemics necessitates the development of tailorable first-response antivirals with specific but adaptive architectures for treatment of novel viral infections. Here, such an antiviral platform has been developed based on a mixture of hetero-peptides self-assembled into functionalized β-sheets capable of specific multivalent binding to viral protein complexes. One domain of each hetero-peptide is designed to specifically bind to certain viral proteins, while another domain self-assembles into fibrils with epitope binding characteristics determined by the types of peptides and their molar fractions. The self-assembled fibrils maintain enhanced binding to viral protein complexes and retain high resilience to viral mutations. This method is experimentally and computationally tested using short peptides that specifically bind to Spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2. This platform is efficacious, inexpensive, and stable with excellent tolerability.

Tailored Self-Assembled Ferroelectric Polymer Nanostructures with Tunable Response.

Project description:A facile ferroelectric nanostructures preparation method is developed based on the self-assembly of poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene)-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) triblock copolymers (P2VP-b-P(VDF-TrFE)-b-P2VP), and the effect of morphological characteristics of the block copolymers on the ferroelectric response has been investigated for the first time. By simple adjustment of the ratio between the blocks, lamellar, cylindrical, and spherical morphologies are obtained in the melt and preserved upon crystallization of P(VDF-TrFE). However, at high P(VDF-TrFE) content, crystallization becomes dominant and drives the self-assembly of block copolymers. The crystallization study of the block copolymers reveals the preservation of the high degree of crystallinity inside the confined nanodomains as well as the reduction of the crystalline size and the Curie transition temperature with the confinement level. Only a small difference in the coercive field and the shape of the hysteresis loop is observed for block copolymers with a lamellar morphology produced either by crystallization-driven self-assembly or by confinement inside preformed lamellar domains. In contrast, delayed spontaneous polarization or the absence of dipole switching is demonstrated for the confinement of ferroelectric crystals inside both isolated cylindrical and spherical domains, exemplifying the influence of dimensionality on the critical size for ferroelectric order.

Tunable Fullerene Affinity of Cages, Bowls and Rings Assembled by Pd<sup>II</sup> Coordination Sphere Engineering.

Project description:For metal-mediated host compounds, the development of strategies to reduce symmetry and introduce multiple functionalities in a non-statistical way is a challenging task. We show that the introduction of steric stress around the coordination environment of square-planar PdII cations and bis-monodentate nitrogen donor ligands allows to control the size and shape of the assembled product, from [Pd2 L4 ] cages over [Pd2 L3 ] bowl-shaped structures to [Pd2 L2 ] rings. Therefore, banana-shaped ligand backbones were equipped with pyridines, two different quinoline isomers and acridine, the latter three introducing steric congestion through hydrogen substituents on annelated benzene rings. Differing behavior of the four resulting hosts towards the binding of C60 and C70 fullerenes was studied and related to structural differences by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The three cages based on pyridine, 6-quinoline or 3-quinoline donors were found to either bind C60 , C70 or no fullerene at all.

Magnetically Actuated Tunable Soft Electronics.

Project description:Variable electronics are vital in tunable filters, transmitters, and receivers, among other applications. In addition, the ability to remotely tune soft capacitors, resistors, and inductors is important for applications in which the device is not accessible. In this paper, a uniform method of remotely tuning the characteristic properties of soft electronic units (i.e. inductance, capacitance, and resistance) is presented. In this method, magnetically actuated ferrofluid mixed with iron powder is dragged in a soft fluidic channel made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to tune the electrical properties of the component. The effects of position and quantity of the ferrofluid and iron powder are studied over a range of frequencies, and the changes in inductance, capacitance, resistance, quality factor, and self-resonance frequency are reported accordingly. The position plays a bigger role in changing inductance, capacitance, and resistance. With the proposed design, the inductance can be changed by 20.9% from 3.31 μH for planar inductors and 23% from 0.44 μH for axial inductors. In addition, the capacitance of capacitors and impedance of resistors can be changed by 12.7% from 2.854 pF and 185.3% from 0.353 kΩ, respectively. Furthermore, the changes in the inductance, capacitance, and resistance follow "quasi-linear profiles" with the input during position and quantity effect experiments.

High-performance compliant thermoelectric generators with magnetically self-assembled soft heat conductors for self-powered wearable electronics.

Project description:Softening of thermoelectric generators facilitates conformal contact with arbitrary-shaped heat sources, which offers an opportunity to realize self-powered wearable applications. However, existing wearable thermoelectric devices inevitably exhibit reduced thermoelectric conversion efficiency due to the parasitic heat loss in high-thermal-impedance polymer substrates and poor thermal contact arising from rigid interconnects. Here, we propose compliant thermoelectric generators with intrinsically stretchable interconnects and soft heat conductors that achieve high thermoelectric performance and unprecedented conformability simultaneously. The silver-nanowire-based soft electrodes interconnect bismuth-telluride-based thermoelectric legs, effectively absorbing strain energy, which allows our thermoelectric generators to conform perfectly to curved surfaces. Metal particles magnetically self-assembled in elastomeric substrates form soft heat conductors that significantly enhance the heat transfer to the thermoelectric legs, thereby maximizing energy conversion efficiency on three-dimensional heat sources. Moreover, automated additive manufacturing paves the way for realizing self-powered wearable applications comprising hundreds of thermoelectric legs with high customizability under ambient conditions.

Tunable Self-Assembled Peptide Hydrogel Sensor for Pharma Cold Supply Chain.

Project description:Defrost sensors are a crucial element for proper functioning of the pharmaceutical cold chain. In this paper, the self-assembled peptide-based hydrogels were used to construct a sensitive defrost sensor for the transportation and storage of medications and biomaterials. The turbidity of the peptide hydrogel was employed as a marker of the temperature regime. The gelation kinetics under different conditions was studied to detect various stages of hydrogel structural transitions aimed at tuning the system properties. The developed sensor can be stored at room temperature for a long period, irreversibly indicates whether the product has been thawed, and can be adjusted to a specific temperature range and detection time.
