Phospha-bicyclohexene-germylenes exhibiting unexpected reactivity.

Project description:Introducing phospha-bicyclohexene (BCH)-germylenes (BCHGe's) as a novel, multifunctional compound class: the title compounds 15-18 are obtained from simple salt metathesis reactions of dipotassium germacyclopentadienediides K2[1] with phosphorusdichlorides. The BCHGe's 15-18 are stabilized by homoconjugation of the germanium(ii) centre with the remote C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond. Despite substantial thermodynamic stabilization, phospha-BCHGe's are reactive and undergo a reductive elimination of elemental germanium to give the corresponding phospholes. The elimination is a nucleophilic, bimolecular process and is prevented by large substituents. The reaction of phospha-BCHGe's with small electrophiles gives the corresponding phosphonium salts. Oxidation with chalcogens takes place at both the germanium and the phosphorus atom, and after elimination of germanium chalcogenides the corresponding phosphole chalcogenides were isolated. The introduced germylenes exhibit strong nucleophilic but also non-neglectable electrophilic properties.

Unexpected Nickel Complex Speciation Unlocks Alternative Pathways for the Reactions of Alkyl Halides with dppf-Nickel(0).

Project description:The mechanism of the reactions between dppf-Ni0 complexes and alkyl halides has been investigated using kinetic and mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations. The active species is [Ni(κ2-dppf)(κ1-dppf)], which undergoes a halide abstraction reaction with alkyl halides and rapidly captures the alkyl radical that is formed. The rates of the reactions of [Ni(COD)(dppf)] with alkyl halides and the yields of prototypical nickel-catalyzed Kumada cross-coupling reactions of alkyl halides are shown to be significantly improved by the addition of free dppf ligand.

Divergent Reactivity of a Dinuclear (NHC)Nickel(I) Catalyst versus Nickel(0) Enables Chemoselective Trifluoromethylselenolation.

Project description:We herein showcase the ability of NHC-coordinated dinuclear NiI -NiI complexes to override fundamental reactivity limits of mononuclear (NHC)Ni0 catalysts in cross-couplings. This is demonstrated with the development of a chemoselective trifluoromethylselenolation of aryl iodides catalyzed by a NiI dimer. A novel SeCF3 -bridged NiI dimer was isolated and shown to selectively react with Ar-I bonds. Our computational and experimental reactivity data suggest dinuclear NiI catalysis to be operative. The corresponding Ni0 species, on the other hand, suffers from preferred reaction with the product, ArSeCF3 , over productive cross-coupling and is hence inactive.

Nitrosothiol reactivity profiling identifies S-nitrosylated proteins with unexpected stability.

Project description:Nitric oxide (NO) regulates protein function by S-nitrosylation of cysteine to form nitrosothiols. Nitrosothiols are highly susceptible to nonenzymatic degradation by cytosolic reducing agents. Here we show that although most protein nitrosothiols are rapidly degraded by cytosolic reductants, a small subset form unusually stable S-nitrosylated proteins. Our findings suggest that stable S-nitrosylation reflects a protein conformation change that shields the nitrosothiol. To identify stable protein nitrosothiols, we developed a proteomic method for profiling S-nitrosylation. We examined the stability of over 100 S-nitrosylated proteins, and identified 10 stable nitrosothiols. These proteins remained S-nitrosylated in cells after NO synthesis was inhibited, unlike most S-nitrosylated proteins. Taken together, our data identify a class of NO targets that form stable nitrosothiols in the cell and are likely to mediate the persistent cellular effects of NO.

Cationic nickel metal-organic frameworks for adsorption of negatively charged dye molecules.

Project description:Industrial dye effluents with low biodegradability are highly toxic and carcinogenic on both human and aquatic lives, thus they are detrimental to the biodiversity of environment. Herein, this data set presents the potential of cationic Nickel based MOFs in the adsorption of charged and neutral dye molecules. Data set include a concise description of experimental conditions for the synthesis of imidazolium ligands, 1,3-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)imidazolium chloride (H2L+Cl-) and 1,3-bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)imidazolium chloride (H4L+Cl-), and MOFs. The data show that the two Nickel MOFs, 1 and 2, synthesized from imidazolium ligands are cationic frameworks. The adsorption and analysis data show that the cationic MOFs exhibit efficient adsorptive removal capacity for positively charged dyes, adsorbing up to 81.08% and 98.65% of Methyl orange and Congo red, respectively.

Characterization and reactivity of a terminal nickel(III)-oxygen adduct.

Project description:High-valent terminal metal-oxygen adducts are hypothesized to be the potent oxidizing reactants in late transition metal oxidation catalysis. In particular, examples of high-valent terminal nickel-oxygen adducts are scarce, meaning there is a dearth in the understanding of such oxidants. A monoanionic Ni(II)-bicarbonate complex has been found to react in a 1:1 ratio with the one-electron oxidant tris(4-bromophenyl)ammoniumyl hexachloroantimonate, yielding a thermally unstable intermediate in high yield (ca. 95%). Electronic absorption, electronic paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies and density functional theory calculations confirm its description as a low-spin (S = 1/2), square planar Ni(III)-oxygen adduct. This rare example of a high-valent terminal nickel-oxygen complex performs oxidations of organic substrates, including 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol and triphenylphosphine, which are indicative of hydrogen atom abstraction and oxygen atom transfer reactivity, respectively.

Unexpected seasonality in quantity and composition of Amazon rainforest air reactivity.

Project description:The hydroxyl radical (OH) removes most atmospheric pollutants from air. The loss frequency of OH radicals due to the combined effect of all gas-phase OH reactive species is a measureable quantity termed total OH reactivity. Here we present total OH reactivity observations in pristine Amazon rainforest air, as a function of season, time-of-day and height (0-80 m). Total OH reactivity is low during wet (10 s(-1)) and high during dry season (62 s(-1)). Comparison to individually measured trace gases reveals strong variation in unaccounted for OH reactivity, from 5 to 15% missing in wet-season afternoons to mostly unknown (average 79%) during dry season. During dry-season afternoons isoprene, considered the dominant reagent with OH in rainforests, only accounts for ∼20% of the total OH reactivity. Vertical profiles of OH reactivity are shaped by biogenic emissions, photochemistry and turbulent mixing. The rainforest floor was identified as a significant but poorly characterized source of OH reactivity.

Unraveling the reactivity of a cationic iminoborane: avenues to unusual boron cations.

Project description:A cationic terminal iminoborane [Mes*N[triple bond, length as m-dash]B ← IPr2Me2][AlBr4] (3+[AlBr4]-) (Mes* = 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl and IPr2Me2 = 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) has been synthesized and characterized. The employment of an aryl group and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand enables 3+[AlBr4]- to exhibit both B-centered Lewis acidity and BN multiple bond reactivities, thus allowing for the construction of tri-coordinate boron cations 5+-12+. More importantly, initial reactions involving coordination, addition, and [2 + 3] cycloadditions have been observed for the cationic iminoborane, demonstrating the potential to build numerous organoboron species via several synthetic routes.

Cationic indium catalysts for ring opening polymerization: tuning reactivity with hemilabile ligands.

Project description:This is a comprehensive study of the effects of rationally designed hemilabile ligands on the stability, reactivity, and change in catalytic behavior of indium complexes. We report cationic alkyl indium complexes supported by a family of hemi-salen type ligands bearing hemilabile thiophenyl (2a), furfuryl (2b) and pyridyl (2c) pendant donor arms. Shelf-life and stability of these complexes followed the trend 2a < 2b < 2c, showing direct correlation to the affinity of the pendant donor group to the indium center. Reactivity towards polymerization of epichlorohydrin and cyclohexene oxide followed the trend 2a > 2b > 2c with control of polymerization following an inverse relationship to reactivity. Surprisingly, 2c polymerized racemic lactide without an external initiator, likely through an alkyl-initiated coordination-insertion mechanism.

A trinuclear nickel(II) enediolate complex: synthesis, characterization, and O2 reactivity.

Project description:Using a new N(4)-donor chelate ligand having a mixture of hydrophobic phenyl and hydrogen-bond-donor appendages, a trinuclear nickel(II) complex of the doubly deprotonated form of 2-hydroxy-1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione was isolated, characterized (X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, UV-vis, (1)H NMR, FTIR, and magnetic moment measurement), and evaluated for O(2) reactivity. This complex, [(6-NA-6-Ph(2)TPANi)(2)(mu-PhC(O)C(O)C(O)Ph)(2)Ni](ClO(4))(2) (4), has two terminal pseudooctahedral Ni(II) centers supported by the tetradentate chelate ligand and a central square-planar Ni(II) ion ligated by oxygen atoms of two bridging enediolate ligands. In CH(3)CN, 4 exhibits a deep orange/brown color and lambda(max) = 463 nm (epsilon = 16 000 M(-1)cm(-1)). The room temperature magnetic moment of 4, determined by Evans method, is mu(eff) = 5.3(2) mu(B). This is consistent with the presence of two noninteracting high-spin Ni(II) centers, a diamagnetic central Ni(II) ion, and an overall quintet ground state. Exposure of a CH(3)CN solution of 4 to O(2) results in the rapid loss of the orange/brown color to give a green solution. The products identified from this reaction are [(kappa(3)-6-NA-6-Ph(2)TPA)Ni(O(2)Ph)(H(2)O)]ClO(4) (5), benzil [PhC(O)C(O)Ph], and CO. Identification of 5 was achieved via its independent synthesis and a comparison of its (1)H NMR and mass spectral features with those of the 6-NA-6-Ph(2)TPA-containing product generated upon reaction of 4 with O(2). The independently prepared sample of 5 was characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, UV-vis, mass spectrometry, and FTIR. The O(2) reactivity of 4 has relevance to the active-site chemistry of Ni(II)-containing acireductone dioxygenase (Ni(II)ARD).
