Ferric Chloride Complexes in Aqueous Solution: An EXAFS Study.

ABSTRACT: A series of concentrated aqueous solutions of ferric chloride with different chloride:iron(III) ratios has been studied by means of EXAFS to determine the structure around the iron(III) ion of the dominating species in such solutions. The dominating species in dilute acidic aqueous solution of ferric chloride, at less than 1 mmol·dm^-3, are the hydrated iron(III) and chloride ions, while in concentrated aqueous solution and in solutions with an excess of chloride ions, up to 1.0 mol·dm^-3, it is the trans-[FeCl₂(H₂O)₄]⁺ complex. Possible higher chloroferrate(III) or dimeric [Fe₂Cl₆] complexes at room temperature, as proposed in the literature, were not observed in any of the studied solutions in spite of an excess of chloride ions of 1 mol·dm^-3.

Growth of turbostratic stacked graphene using waste ferric chloride solution as a feedstock.

Project description:Monolayer graphene has excellent electrical properties especially a linear dispersion in the band structure at the K-point in the Brillouin zone. However, its electronic transport properties can be degraded by surface roughness and attachment of charge impurities. Although multilayer graphene can reduce the surface roughness and attachment of charge impurities, the increase in the number of graphene layers can degrade the electronic transport properties due to interlayer interactions. Turbostratic graphene can significantly reduce the effect of interlayer interaction of multilayer graphene resulting in electrical properties similar to those of monolayer graphene. In this report, we have demonstrated the growth of turbostratic stacked graphene using waste ferric chloride solution as a feedstock by vaporization and calcination at 700 °C for 6 hours under an argon atmosphere. SEM images and EDX elemental distribution maps showed graphene can be grown on iron and nickel catalysts. XRD results and Raman spectra confirmed the presence of turbostratic stacked graphene with the interlayer spacing in the range of 3.41 Å to 3.44 Å. The Raman spectra in all samples also displayed a weak intensity peak of iTALO- and a well-fitted 2D band by a single Lorentzian peak indicating the presence of turbostratic stacked graphene. In addition, XPS spectra reveal the growth mechanism of the turbostratic stacked graphene. This synthesis process of turbostratic stacked graphene is not only simple, low-cost, and suitable for large-scale production but also decreases the environmental issues from releasing waste ferric chloride solution with improper disposal.

High-Energy-Density Rechargeable Lithium-Nickel Chloride Aqueous Solution Batteries.

Project description:High-energy-density rechargeable batteries with performance beyond that of lithium-ion batteries are required for next-generation electric vehicles. We propose a novel rechargeable battery with a lithium anode and a NiCl2 aqueous cathode that is separated Li1.4Al0.4Ge0.2Ti1.4(PO4)3 as a water-stable lithium-ion-conducting solid electrolyte. The cell was discharged up to 93% of the theoretical cathode capacity at 0.5 mA cm-2 and 25 °C. The calculated energy density, based on the weights of NiCl2 and Li, and the average discharge voltage of 2.4 V at 0.5 mA cm-2, was 852 Wh kg-1, which is more than twice as high as that of conventional lithium-ion batteries. The cell was successfully cycled for 50 cycles without any degradation of the charge and discharge voltages at 0.5 mA cm-2 and 25 °C for 5 h charge and 5 h discharge, where the utilization of NiCl2 was 80%.

Photochemical Generation of Methyl Chloride from Humic Aicd: Impacts of Precursor Concentration, Solution pH, Solution Salinity and Ferric Ion.

Project description:Methyl chloride (CH3Cl) is presently understood to arise from biotic and abiotic processes in marine systems. However, the production of CH3Cl via photochemical processes has not been well studied. Here, we reported the production of CH3Cl from humic acid (HA) in sunlit saline water and the effects of the concentration of HA, chloride ions, ferric ions and pH were investigated. HA in aqueous chloride solutions or natural seawater were irradiated under an artificial light, and the amounts of CH3Cl were determined using a purge-and-trap and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. CH3Cl was generated upon irradiation and its amount increased with increasing irradiation time and the light intensity. The formation of CH3Cl increased with an increase of HA concentration ranging from 2 mg L-1 to 20 mg L-1 and chloride ion concentration ranging from 0.02 mol L-1 to 0.5 mol L-1. The photochemical production of CH3Cl was pH-dependent, with the highest amount of CH3Cl generating near neutral conditions. Additionally, the generation of CH3Cl was inhibited by ferric ions. Finally, natural coastal seawater was irradiated under artificial light and the concentration of CH3Cl rose significantly. Our results suggest that the photochemical process of HA may be a source of CH3Cl in the marine environment.

Enhanced removal of As (V) from aqueous solution using modified hydrous ferric oxide nanoparticles.

Project description:Hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) is most effective with high treatment capacity on arsenate [As(V)] sorption although its transformation and aggregation nature need further improvement. Here, HFO nanoparticles with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or starch as modifier was synthesized for the purpose of stability improvement and As(V) removal from water. Comparatively, CMC might be the optimum stabilizer for HFO nanoparticles because of more effective physical and chemical stability. The large-pore structure, high surface specific area, and the non-aggregated nature of CMC-HFO lead to increased adsorption sites, and thus high adsorption capacities of As(V) without pre-treatment (355 mg·g-1), which is much greater than those reported in previous studies. Second-order equation and dual-mode isotherm model could be successfully used to interpret the sorption kinetics and isotherms of As(V), respectively. FTIR, XPS and XRD analyses suggested that precipitation and surface complexation were primary mechanisms for As(V) removal by CMC modified HFO nanoparticles. A surface complexation model (SCM) was used to simulate As adsorption over pH 2.5-10.4. The predominant adsorbed arsenate species were modeled as bidentate binuclear surface complexes at low pH and as monodentate complexes at high pH. The immobilized arsenic remained stable when aging for 270 d at room temperature.

Quantitative Raman Analysis of Carotenoid Protein Complexes in Aqueous Solution.

Project description:Carotenoids are naturally abundant, fat-soluble pigmented compounds with dietary, antioxidant and vision protection advantages. The dietary carotenoids, Beta Carotene, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin, complexed with in bovine serum albumin (BSA) in aqueous solution, were explored using Raman spectroscopy to differentiate and quantify their spectral signatures. UV visible absorption spectroscopy was employed to confirm the linearity of responses over the concentration range employed (0.05-1 mg/mL) and, of the 4 Raman source wavelengths (785 nm, 660 nm, 532 nm, 473 nm), 532 nm was chosen to provide the optimal response. After preprocessing to remove water and BSA contributions, and correct for self-absorption, a partial least squares model with R2 of 0.9995, resulted in an accuracy of the Root Mean Squared Error of Prediction for Beta Carotene of 0.0032 mg/mL and Limit of Detection 0.0106 mg/mL. Principal Components Analysis clearly differentiated solutions of the three carotenoids, based primarily on small shifts of the main peak at ~1520 cm-1. Least squares fitting analysis of the spectra of admixtures of the carotenoid:protein complexes showed reasonable correlation between norminal% and fitted%, yielding 100% contribution when fitted with individual carotenoid complexes and variable contributions with multiple ratios of admixtures. The results indicate the technique can potentially be used to quantify the carotenoid content of human serum and to identify their differential contributions for application in clinical analysis.

Supercharging protein complexes from aqueous solution disrupts their native conformations.

Project description:The effects of aqueous solution supercharging on the solution- and gas-phase structures of two protein complexes were investigated using traveling-wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry (TWIMS-MS). Low initial concentrations of m-nitrobenzyl alcohol (m-NBA) in the electrospray ionization (ESI) solution can effectively increase the charge of concanavalin A dimers and tetramers, but at higher m-NBA concentrations, the increases in charge are accompanied by solution-phase dissociation of the dimers and up to a ~22% increase in the collision cross section (CCS) of the tetramers. With just 0.8% m-NBA added to the ESI solution of a ~630 kDa anthrax toxin octamer complex, the average charge is increased by only ~4% compared with the "native" complex, but it is sufficiently destabilized so that extensive gas-phase fragmentation occurs in the relatively high pressure regions of the TWIMS device. Anthrax toxin complexes exist in either a prechannel or a transmembrane channel state. With m-NBA, the prechannel state of the complex has the same CCS/charge ratio in the gas phase as the transmembrane channel state of the same complex formed without m-NBA, yet undergoes extensive dissociation, indicating that destabilization from supercharging occurs in the ESI droplet prior to ion formation and is not a result of Coulombic destabilization in the gas phase as a result of higher charging. These results demonstrate that the supercharging of large protein complexes is the result of conformational changes induced by the reagents in the ESI droplets, where enrichment of the supercharging reagent during droplet evaporation occurs.

A Simple Densimetric Method to Determine Saturation Temperature of Aqueous Potassium Chloride Solution.

Project description:The precise control of crystallization is a key issue in providing a high quality crystalline product. It has to be achieved by, among other means, a proper choice of the solution processing temperature, which is determined on the basis of the metastable zone width and type of solubility curve. In this article experimental data for potassium chloride solution density, as a function of temperature and its correlation in the range from under- to supersaturation, are reported for solution concentrations between 24.62 % w/w and 31.84 % w/w. As could be expected in the case of undersaturated solutions and low supersaturation, the temperature dependence of density for solutions of different saturation may be described by a linear equation within the investigated range of concentrations. It was also proved that for the undersaturation range there exists a pole point, which allows calculation of the saturation temperature, based on the density measured at any temperature.

Ferric Chloride-induced Murine Thrombosis Models.

Project description:Arterial thrombosis (blood clot) is a common complication of many systemic diseases associated with chronic inflammation, including atherosclerosis, diabetes, obesity, cancer and chronic autoimmune rheumatologic disorders. Thrombi are the cause of most heart attacks, strokes and extremity loss, making thrombosis an extremely important public health problem. Since these thrombi stem from inappropriate platelet activation and subsequent coagulation, targeting these systems therapeutically has important clinical significance for developing safer treatments. Due to the complexities of the hemostatic system, in vitro experiments cannot replicate the blood-to-vessel wall interactions; therefore, in vivo studies are critical to understand pathological mechanisms of thrombus formation. To this end, various thrombosis models have been developed in mice. Among them, ferric chloride (FeCl3) induced vascular injury is a widely used model of occlusive thrombosis that reports platelet activation and aggregation in the context of an aseptic closed vascular system. This model is based on redox-induced endothelial cell injury, which is simple and sensitive to both anticoagulant and anti-platelets drugs. The time required for the development of a thrombus that occludes blood flow gives a quantitative measure of vascular injury, platelet activation and aggregation that is relevant to thrombotic diseases. We have significantly refined this FeCl3-induced vascular thrombosis model, which makes the data highly reproducible with minimal variation. Here we describe the model and present representative data from several experimental set-ups that demonstrate the utility of this model in thrombosis research.

Origin of supercharging in electrospray ionization of noncovalent complexes from aqueous solution.

Project description:The use of m-nitrobenzyl alcohol (m-NBA) to enhance charging of noncovalent complexes formed by electrospray ionization from aqueous solutions was investigated. Addition of up to 1% m-NBA can result in a significant increase in the average charging of complexes, ranging from approximately 13% for the homo-heptamer of NtrC4-RC (317 kDa; maximum charge state increases from 42+ to 44+) to approximately 49% for myoglobin (17.6 kDa; maximum charge state increases from 9+ to 16+). Charge state distributions of larger complexes obtained from heated solutions to which no m-NBA was added are remarkably similar to those containing small amounts of m-NBA. Dissociation of the complexes through identical channels both upon addition of higher concentrations of m-NBA and heating is observed. These results indicate that the enhanced charging upon addition of m-NBA to aqueous electrospray solutions is a result of droplet heating owing to the high boiling point of m-NBA, which results in a change in the higher-order structure and/or dissociation of the complexes. For monomeric proteins and small complexes, the enhancement of charging is lower for heated aqueous solutions than from solutions with m-NBA because rapid folding of proteins from heated solutions that do not contain m-NBA can occur after the electrospray droplet is formed and is evaporatively cooled.
