Quantitative prediction of photoluminescence quantum yields of phosphors from first principles.

ABSTRACT: Optimizing the photoluminescence quantum yields of Ir(iii) complexes is the key to their application as phosphors in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). This work demonstrates for the first time that quantitative predictions of photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) in a series of blue-to-green Ir(iii) complexes can be derived exclusively from electronic structure calculations.

First-Principles Prediction of Wavelength-Dependent Product Quantum Yields.

Project description:We present a method to predict wavelength-dependent product quantum yields (PQYs) for photochemical reactions and applied it to Z/E-isomerization and several ring-closing reactions of Z-2,5-dimethyl-1,3,5-hexatriene and truncated previtamin D. Using branching ratios from surface hopping molecular dynamics, individual trajectories are correlated with the absorption spectra of their initial structures. The wavelength-dependent PQYs are computed by dividing the average spectrum of the initial structures of the product-forming trajectories by the average spectrum of all initial structures. Accurate absorption spectra are calculated using the correlated ADC(2) method with an implicit solvent. Calculations reproduce the experimentally found trend of increasing six-ring formation and decreasing Z/E-isomerization on the red side of the spectrum. Over all seven reactions studied, the mean absolute error (MAE) between experimental and calculated PQYs (MAE) amounts to 8.1%, and the largest MAE is 18.6%. For four reactions, predicted values agree quantitatively with experiments within 5.6%.

Doping/Alloying Pathways to Lead-Free Halide Perovskites with Ultimate Photoluminescence Quantum Yields.

Project description:Tailored modifications of halide lead-free perovskites (LFPs) via doping/alloying with metal cations have been recognized as a promising pathway to highly efficient inorganic phosphors with photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields of up to 100 %. Such materials typically display selective sensitivity to UV light, a broad PL range, and long PL lifetimes as well as a unique compositional variability and stability-an ideal combination for many light-harvesting applications. This Minireview presents the state-of-the-art in doped LFPs, focusing on the reports published mostly in the last two to three years. We discuss the factors determining the efficiency and spectral parameters of the broadband PL of doped LFPs depending on the dopant and host matrix, both in micro- and nanocrystalline states, address the most relevant challenges this rapidly developing research area is facing, and outline the most promising concepts for further progress in this field.

Quantitative self-assembly prediction yields targeted nanomedicines.

Project description:Development of targeted nanoparticle drug carriers often requires complex synthetic schemes involving both supramolecular self-assembly and chemical modification. These processes are generally difficult to predict, execute, and control. We describe herein a targeted drug delivery system that is accurately and quantitatively predicted to self-assemble into nanoparticles based on the molecular structures of precursor molecules, which are the drugs themselves. The drugs assemble with the aid of sulfated indocyanines into particles with ultrahigh drug loadings of up to 90%. We devised quantitative structure-nanoparticle assembly prediction (QSNAP) models to identify and validate electrotopological molecular descriptors as highly predictive indicators of nano-assembly and nanoparticle size. The resulting nanoparticles selectively targeted kinase inhibitors to caveolin-1-expressing human colon cancer and autochthonous liver cancer models to yield striking therapeutic effects while avoiding pERK inhibition in healthy skin. This finding enables the computational design of nanomedicines based on quantitative models for drug payload selection.

Benchmarking First-Principles Reaction Equilibrium Composition Prediction.

Project description:The availability of thermochemical properties allows for the prediction of the equilibrium compositions of chemical reactions. The accurate prediction of these can be crucial for the design of new chemical synthesis routes. However, for new processes, these data are generally not completely available. A solution is the use of thermochemistry calculated from first-principles methods such as Density Functional Theory (DFT). Before this can be used reliably, it needs to be systematically benchmarked. Although various studies have examined the accuracy of DFT from an energetic point of view, few studies have considered its accuracy in predicting the temperature-dependent equilibrium composition. In this work, we collected 117 molecules for which experimental thermochemical data were available. From these, we constructed 2648 reactions. These experimentally constructed reactions were then benchmarked against DFT for 6 exchange-correlation functionals and 3 quality of basis sets. We show that, in reactions that do not show temperature dependence in the equilibrium composition below 1000 K, over 90% are predicted correctly. Temperature-dependent equilibrium compositions typically demonstrate correct qualitative behavior. Lastly, we show that the errors are equally caused by errors in the vibrational spectrum and the DFT electronic ground state energy.

Influence of Measurement Geometry and Blank on Absolute Measurements of Photoluminescence Quantum Yields of Scattering Luminescent Films.

Project description:For a series of 500 μm-thick polyurethane films containing different concentrations of luminescent and scattering YAG:Ce microparticles, we systematically explored and quantified pitfalls of absolute measurements of photoluminescence quantum yields (Φf) for often employed integrating sphere (IS) geometries, where the sample is placed either on a sample holder at the bottom of the IS surface or mounted in the IS center. Thereby, the influence of detection and illumination geometry and sample position was examined using blanks with various scattering properties for measuring the number of photons absorbed by the sample. Our results reveal that (i) setup configurations where the scattering sample is mounted in the IS center and (ii) transparent blanks can introduce systematic errors in absolute Φf measurements. For strongly scattering, luminescent samples, this can result in either an under- or overestimation of the absorbed photon flux and hence an under- or overestimation of Φf. The size of these uncertainties depends on the scattering properties of the sample and instrument parameters, such as sample position, IS size, wavelength-dependent reflectivity of the IS surface coating, and port configuration. For accurate and reliable absolute Φf measurements, we recommend (i) a blank with scattering properties closely matching those of the sample to realize similar distributions of the diffusely scattered excitation photons within the IS, and (ii) a sufficiently high sample absorption at the excitation wavelength. For IS setups with center-mounted samples, measurement geometries should be utilized that prevent the loss of excitation photons by reflections from the sample out of the IS.

Linear structural evolution induced tunable photoluminescence in clinopyroxene solid-solution phosphors.

Project description:Clinopyroxenes along the Jervisite (NaScSi2O6)-Diopside (CaMgSi2O6) join have been studied, and a solid-solution of the type (Na(1-x)Ca(x))(Sc(1-x)Mg(x))Si2O6 has been identified in the full range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. The powder X-ray patterns of all the phases indicate a structural similarity to the end compounds and show smooth variation of structural parameters with composition. The linear structural evolution of iso-structural (Na(1-x)Ca(x))(Sc(1-x)Mg(x))Si2O6 solid-solutions obeying Vegard's rule has also been examined and verified by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The continuous solid-solutions show the same structural type, therefore the photoluminescence spectra of Eu(2+) doped samples possess the superposition of spectral features from blue-emitting component (CaMgSi2O6:Eu(2+)) and yellow-emitting one (NaScSi2O6:Eu(2+)). This indicates that the spectroscopic properties of (Na(1-x)Ca(x))(Sc(1-x)Mg(x))Si2O6 clinopyroxene solid-solutions are in direct relations with structural parameters, and it is helpful for designing color-tunable photoluminescence with predetermined parameters.

Prediction of membrane-protein topology from first principles.

Project description:The current best membrane-protein topology-prediction methods are typically based on sequence statistics and contain hundreds of parameters that are optimized on known topologies of membrane proteins. However, because the insertion of transmembrane helices into the membrane is the outcome of molecular interactions among protein, lipids and water, it should be possible to predict topology by methods based directly on physical data, as proposed >20 years ago by Kyte and Doolittle. Here, we present two simple topology-prediction methods using a recently published experimental scale of position-specific amino acid contributions to the free energy of membrane insertion that perform on a par with the current best statistics-based topology predictors. This result suggests that prediction of membrane-protein topology and structure directly from first principles is an attainable goal, given the recently improved understanding of peptide recognition by the translocon.

First-Principles Calculations of Luminescence Spectra of Real-Scale Quantum Dots.

Project description:The luminescence line shape is an important feature of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) and affects performance in various optical applications. Here, we report a first-principles method to predict the luminescence spectrum of thousands of atom QDs. In our approach, neural network potential calculations are combined with density functional theory calculations to describe exciton-phonon coupling (EPC). Using the calculated EPC, the luminescence spectrum is evaluated within the Franck-Condon approximation. Our approach results in the luminescence line shape for an InP/ZnSe core/shell QD (3406 atoms) that exhibits excellent agreement with the experiments. From a detailed analysis of EPC, we reveal that the coupling of both acoustic and optical phonons to an exciton are important in determining the spectral line shapes of core/shell QDs, which is in contrast with previous studies. On the basis of the present simulation results, we provide guidelines for designing high-performance core/shell QDs with ultrasharp emission spectra.

Coordination-induced emission enhancement in gold-nanoclusters with solid-state quantum yields up to 40% for eco-friendly, low-reabsorption nano-phosphors.

Project description:Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have gained much attention as light-emitting materials for light-conversion nano-phosphors and luminescent solar concentrators. Unfortunately, those CQDs involve toxic heavy metals and frequently need to be synthesized in the hazardous organic solvent. In addition, they suffer from severe solid-state aggregation-induced self-quenching and reabsorption losses. To address these issues, here we prepare Zn-coordinated glutathione-stabilized gold-nanocluster (Zn-GSH-AuNCs) assemblies without involving heavy metals and organic solvent. Unlike GSH-AuNCs dispersed in an aqueous solution with poor photoluminescence quantum yields (PL-QYs, typically ~1%), those Zn-GSH-AuNCs powders hold high solid-state PL-QYs up to 40 ± 5% in the aggregated state. Such Zn-induced coordination-enhanced emission (CEE) is attributed to the combined effects of suppressed non-radiative relaxation and enhanced charge-transfer interaction. In addition, they also exhibit a large Stokes shift, thus mitigating both aggregation-induced self-quenching and reabsorption losses. Motivated by these photophysical properties, we demonstrated white-light emission from all non-toxic, aqueous-synthesis nano-materials.

Realistic phase diagram of water from "first principles" data-driven quantum simulations.

Project description:Since the experimental characterization of the low-pressure region of water's phase diagram in the early 1900s, scientists have been on a quest to understand the thermodynamic stability of ice polymorphs on the molecular level. In this study, we demonstrate that combining the MB-pol data-driven many-body potential for water, which was rigorously derived from "first principles" and exhibits chemical accuracy, with advanced enhanced-sampling algorithms, which correctly describe the quantum nature of molecular motion and thermodynamic equilibria, enables computer simulations of water's phase diagram with an unprecedented level of realism. Besides providing fundamental insights into how enthalpic, entropic, and nuclear quantum effects shape the free-energy landscape of water, we demonstrate that recent progress in "first principles" data-driven simulations, which rigorously encode many-body molecular interactions, has opened the door to realistic computational studies of complex molecular systems, bridging the gap between experiments and simulations.
