Data related to the mesoscopic structure of iso-graphite for nuclear applications.

ABSTRACT: The data in this article are related to the research article "Mesoscopic structure features in synthetic graphite" (März et al., 2018) [1]. Details of the manufacture of isostatically moulded graphite (iso-graphite), thin foil preparation by focused ion beams (FIB) for analysis, and characterisation methods are provided. The detailed structures of coke filler and binding carbon are presented through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and Raman spectroscopy characterisation. Atomistic modelling results of mesoscopic structural features are included.

Project description:Micrographs of multiple nuclear graphite grades were captured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), complementing the data contained in the related manuscript, "A multi-technique image library of nuclear graphite microstructures of historical and modern grades." The SEM micrographs show the differences among filler particles, binder, and thermal cracks contained in nuclear graphite. This library of microstructures serves as a baseline of as-received material and enables understanding the phases and differences between nuclear grades. TEM micrographs included in this manuscript elucidate the content of a common material contained in the binder phase known as quinoline insoluble (QI) particles. These particles are a phase of graphite that can be used as a forensic fingerprint of the neutron irradiation effects in graphite. The manuscript also contains some data of glassy carbon, an allotrope of carbon that shares similarities with some of the chaotic structures in nuclear graphite. Combined, these micrographs provide a detailed overview of the microstructures of various graphite grades prior to neutron irradiation.

Microstructural characterization data for nuclear graphite samples generated during tribology testing in argon.

Project description:This article contains microstructural characterization data related to the research article 'Self-lubrication of Nuclear Graphite in Argon at High Temperature', published in Tribology International. Digital, optical, and scanning electron micrographs are collected on the pebble and disk samples generated in the tribological tests and in their corresponding reference samples. Surface roughness measurements of the test and control samples are performed using the 3D-depth composition feature of the digital microscope. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra of the test and reference samples are acquired and peak-fitted according to published literature on nuclear graphite characterization. Plots of the peak-fitted spectra are included in this article; the full list of peak-fitting parameters is provided in the linked data repository.

Damage tolerance of nuclear graphite at elevated temperatures.

Project description:Nuclear-grade graphite is a critically important high-temperature structural material for current and potentially next generation of fission reactors worldwide. It is imperative to understand its damage-tolerant behaviour and to discern the mechanisms of damage evolution under in-service conditions. Here we perform in situ mechanical testing with synchrotron X-ray computed micro-tomography at temperatures between ambient and 1,000 °C on a nuclear-grade Gilsocarbon graphite. We find that both the strength and fracture toughness of this graphite are improved at elevated temperature. Whereas this behaviour is consistent with observations of the closure of microcracks formed parallel to the covalent-sp2-bonded graphene layers at higher temperatures, which accommodate the more than tenfold larger thermal expansion perpendicular to these layers, we attribute the elevation in strength and toughness primarily to changes in the residual stress state at 800-1,000 °C, specifically to the reduction in significant levels of residual tensile stresses in the graphite that are 'frozen-in' following processing.

Dynamic Deformation in Nuclear Graphite and Underlying Mechanisms.

Project description:Time-dependent deformation in nuclear graphite is influenced by the creation and migration of radiation-induced defects in the reactor environment. This study investigates the role of pre-existing defects such as point defect clusters and Mrozowski cracks in nuclear graphite IG-110. Separate specimens were irradiated with a 2.8 MeV Au2+ beam with a fluence of 4.38 × 1014 cm-2 and an 8 MeV C2+ beam with a fluence of 1.24 × 1016 cm-2. Microscopic specimens were either mechanically loaded inside a transmission electron microscope (TEM) or subjected to ex situ indentation-based creep loading. In situ TEM tests showed significant plasticity in regions highly localized around the Mrozowski cracks, resembling slip or ripplocation bands. Slip bands were also seen near regions without pre-existing defects but at very high stresses. Ex situ self-ion irradiation embrittled the specimens and decreased the creep displacement and rate, while heavy ion irradiation resulted in the opposite behavior. We hypothesize that the large-sized gold ions (compared to the carbon atoms) induced interplanar swelling as well as cross-plane channels for increased defect mobility. These findings illustrate the role of pre-existing defects in the dynamic relaxation of stresses during irradiation and the need for more studies into the radiation environment's impact on the mechanical response of nuclear graphite.

Mesoscopic structure and social aspects of human mobility.

Project description:The individual movements of large numbers of people are important in many contexts, from urban planning to disease spreading. Datasets that capture human mobility are now available and many interesting features have been discovered, including the ultra-slow spatial growth of individual mobility. However, the detailed substructures and spatiotemporal flows of mobility--the sets and sequences of visited locations--have not been well studied. We show that individual mobility is dominated by small groups of frequently visited, dynamically close locations, forming primary "habitats" capturing typical daily activity, along with subsidiary habitats representing additional travel. These habitats do not correspond to typical contexts such as home or work. The temporal evolution of mobility within habitats, which constitutes most motion, is universal across habitats and exhibits scaling patterns both distinct from all previous observations and unpredicted by current models. The delay to enter subsidiary habitats is a primary factor in the spatiotemporal growth of human travel. Interestingly, habitats correlate with non-mobility dynamics such as communication activity, implying that habitats may influence processes such as information spreading and revealing new connections between human mobility and social networks.

Mesoscopic self-organization of a self-assembled supramolecular rectangle on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and Au(111) surfaces.

Project description:A self-assembled supramolecular metallacyclic rectangle was investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and Au(111) surfaces. The rectangles spontaneously adsorb on both surfaces and self-organize into well ordered adlayers. On highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, the long edge of the rectangle stands on the surface, forming a 2D molecular network. In contrast, the face of the rectangle lays flat on the Au(111) surface, forming linear chains. The structures and intramolecular features obtained through high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy imaging are discussed.

Mesoscopic structure of neuronal tracts from time-dependent diffusion.

Project description:Interpreting brain diffusion MRI measurements in terms of neuronal structure at a micrometer level is an exciting unresolved problem. Here we consider diffusion transverse to a bundle of fibers, and show theoretically, as well as using Monte Carlo simulations and measurements in a phantom made of parallel fibers mimicking axons, that the time dependent diffusion coefficient approaches its macroscopic limit slowly, in a (ln t)/t fashion. The logarithmic singularity arises due to short range disorder in the fiber packing. We identify short range disorder in axonal fibers based on histological data from the splenium, and argue that the time dependent contribution to the overall diffusion coefficient from the extra-axonal water dominates that of the intra-axonal water. This dominance may explain the bias in measuring axon diameters in clinical settings. The short range disorder is also reflected in the asymptotically linear frequency dependence of the diffusion coefficient measured with oscillating gradients, in agreement with recent experiments. Our results relate the measured diffusion to the mesoscopic structure of neuronal tissue, uncovering the sensitivity of diffusion metrics to axonal arrangement within a fiber tract, and providing an alternative interpretation of axonal diameter mapping techniques.

Mesoscopic structure conditions the emergence of cooperation on social networks.

Project description:BACKGROUND: We study the evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma on two social networks substrates obtained from actual relational data. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We find very different cooperation levels on each of them that cannot be easily understood in terms of global statistical properties of both networks. We claim that the result can be understood at the mesoscopic scale, by studying the community structure of the networks. We explain the dependence of the cooperation level on the temptation parameter in terms of the internal structure of the communities and their interconnections. We then test our results on community-structured, specifically designed artificial networks, finding a good agreement with the observations in both real substrates. CONCLUSION: Our results support the conclusion that studies of evolutionary games on model networks and their interpretation in terms of global properties may not be sufficient to study specific, real social systems. Further, the study allows us to define new quantitative parameters that summarize the mesoscopic structure of any network. In addition, the community perspective may be helpful to interpret the origin and behavior of existing networks as well as to design structures that show resilient cooperative behavior.

Analysis of oxidation degree of graphite oxide and chemical structure of corresponding reduced graphite oxide by selecting different-sized original graphite.

Project description:The thermal exfoliation and reduction of graphite oxide (GO) is the most commonly used strategy for large-scale preparation of graphene, and the oxidation degree of GO would influence the chemical structure of prepared graphene, thereby affecting its final physical and chemical properties. In addition to serving as the precursor for synthesizing graphene, GO also possesses great potential for various important applications owing to its abundant oxygen-containing groups and hybrid electronic structure. Therefore, systematically studying the influencing factors on the oxidation degree of GO and clarifying the effect of oxidation degree on the corresponding graphene is particularly important. Herein, we have studied the effect of the lateral size of the original graphite on the oxidation degree of GO in order to control the oxidation degree of GO. GOs with different degrees of oxidation were synthesized using a modified Hummers method. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy revealed that decreased lateral size of the original graphite would lead to increased oxidation degree of GO. Furthermore, the interlayer spacing of the GO samples achieved 0.9-1.0 nm, which indicated that the modified Hummers method could make well oxidized graphite. The corresponding reduced graphite oxide (rGO) was also prepared by low-temperature exfoliation of GO at 140 °C under ambient atmosphere. It was found that a larger lateral size of GO resulted in rGO with fewer oxygen-containing functional groups, but a smaller lateral size of graphite possessed a higher exfoliation degree with a larger specific surface area. More importantly, the relationship between binding energy (E B) of photoelectron of C atom in oxygen-containing groups and the number of oxygen-containing groups in GO and rGO samples was analyzed theoretically.
