Project description:MWCNTs (multiwalled carbon nanotubes) were applied to fiber-reinforced composite materials with phenolic resin having flame retardance for the composite heating panels of railroad vehicles. Instead of dispersing MWCNTs in the matrix, the surface of a pristine plain-weave glass fiber fabric was coated with MWCNTs through a series of dip-coating and drying processes, followed by the resin infusion of the phenolic resin to make the composite heating panel. Before and after the resin infusion process, low percolation thresholds of 0.00216 wt%MWCNT (weight percent of MWCNTs) and 0.001 wt%MWCNT, respectively, were achieved, as were very high electrical conductivities of 47.5 S/m at 0.210 wt%MWCNT and 26.7 S/m at 0.116 wt%, respectively. The low threshold and high conductivity can be attributed to the formation of electrical pathways directly onto the glass fabrics. It was confirmed that mechanical properties such as modulus, strength, and maximum strain were at the same level as those of the pristine glass fabric composite. The heating performance with temperature uniformity, as well as the electrical and mechanical properties, indicates that the resin-infused glass fabric composite having MWCNTs directly coated onto the fabric surface can be a solution for lightweight structural composite heating panels for railway vehicles.

Project description:Reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-coated microballs of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) used for fabricating three-dimensional sensor (3D sensor), which are expected to exhibit high sensitivity compared with conventional two-dimensional (2D) sensors, were prepared using a reaction-based assembly process. The sheet resistance and transmittance of the RGO-coated balls decreased with increasing number of coatings, implying that the RGO was well adhered to the ball by the assembly method. Two types of vacuum pressure sensors using multiple balls and a single ball were fabricated using lift-off and air-blowing methods, respectively. At pressures <1 torr, the sensors showed an increased resistance value due to the bending of graphene sheets by the Van der Waals attractive force. Further, the pressure versus resistance values at the logarithmic scale showed a linear relation, with a pressure reading error <6%. Compared with the 2D sensor fabricated using RGO, the multiball sensor exhibited almost 4-5 times higher RRC value. The single-ball sensor showed reasonable reproducibility at various temperatures. Given the size and pressure reading range of the sensor, the sensitivity of the single-ball sensor at 100 °C was approximately 6,000 times greater than that of the sensor with the highest sensitivity reported in the literature. The increase in surface area and the geometric effect of the sensing part of the single-ball sensor appeared to be responsible for its abnormally high sensitivity.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) make an ideal one-dimensional (1D) material platform for the exploration of novel physical phenomena under extremely strong quantum confinement. The 1D character of electrons, phonons and excitons in individual CNTs features extraordinary electronic, thermal and optical properties. Since their discovery in 1991, they have been continuing to attract interest in various disciplines, including chemistry, materials science, physics and engineering. However, the macroscopic manifestation of 1D properties is still limited, despite significant efforts for decades. Recently, a controlled vacuum filtration method has been developed for the preparation of wafer-scale films of crystalline chirality-enriched CNTs, and such films have enabled exciting new fundamental studies and applications. In this review, we will first discuss the controlled vacuum filtration technique, and then summarize recent discoveries in optical spectroscopy studies and optoelectronic device applications using films prepared by this technique.

Project description:Large-scale production of graphene nanosheets (GNSs) has led to the availability of solution-processable GNSs on the commercial scale. The controlled vacuum filtration method is a scalable process for the preparation of wafer-scale films of GNSs, which can be used for gas sensing applications. Here, we demonstrate the use of this deposition method to produce functional gas sensors, using a chemiresistor structure from GNS solution-based techniques. The GNS suspension was prepared by liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) and transferred to a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The effect of non-covalent functionalization with Co-porphyrin and Fe-phthalocyanines on the sensor properties was studied. The pristine and functionalized GNS films were characterized using different techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrical characterizations. The morphological and spectroscopic analyses both confirm that the molecules (Co-porphyrin and Fe-phthalocyanine) were successfully adsorbed onto the GNSs surface through π-π interactions. The chemiresistive sensor response of functionalized GNSs toward the low concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) (0.5-2 ppm) was studied and compared with those of the film of pristine GNSs. The tests on the sensing performance clearly showed sensitivity to a low concentration of NO2 (5 ppm). Furthermore, the chemical modification of GNSs significantly improves NO2 sensing performance compared to the pristine GNSs. The sensor response can be modulated by the type of adsorbed molecules. Indeed, Co-Por exhibited negative responsiveness (the response of Co-Por-GNS sensors and pristine GNS devices was 13.1% and 15.6%, respectively, after exposure to 0.5 ppm of NO2). Meanwhile, Fe-Phc-GNSs induced the opposite behavior resulting in an increase in the sensor response (the sensitivity was 8.3% and 7.8% of Fe-Phc-GNSs and pristine GNSs, respectively, at 0.5 ppm NO2 gas).

Project description:The stretchable sensor has been considered as the most important component in a wearable device. However, it is still a great challenge to develop a highly sensitive textile-based strain sensor with good flexibility, excellent skin affinity, and large dynamic range. Herein, polypyrrole (PPy) was immobilized on a stretchable textile knitted by polyester and spandex via low-temperature interfacial polymerization to prepare a conductive strain sensor for human motion and respiration measurements. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and thermal gravimetric data verify that a thin layer of PPy has been successfully coated on the textile with a high density and very uniform distribution. The resistance of the as-prepared textile is 21.25 Ω/cm2 and the PPy-coated textile could be used as an electric conductor to light up a LED lamp. Moreover, the textile could tolerate folding at an angle of 180° and 500 times of bending-twisting cycles without significant changes on its resistance. A negative correlation between the resistance change and the applied strain is observed for the textile-based sensor in the strain ranging from 0 to 71% with the gauge factor of -0.46. After more than 200 cycles of stretching-releasing under the strain of 26%, there is no obvious alteration on the sensing responses. The sensors were attached on volunteers' body or clothes for the real-time measurement of human motions and respiration, demonstrating that the textile-based sensor could sensitively detect finger, elbow, and knee bending and differentiate deep, normal, and fast breath. This work may provide an approach to uniform and dense coating conductive polymers on textiles for highly sensitive and stretchable sensors, which possess great potentials in practical applications for real-time monitoring human motions and physiological signs.

Project description:In this study, we examine the electrochemical performance of supercapacitor (SC) electrodes made from 3D-printed nanocomposites. These composites consist of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polyether ether ketone (PEEK), coated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). The electrochemical performance of a 3D-printed PEEK/MWCNT solid electrode with a surface area density of 1.2 mm-1 is compared to two distinct periodically porous PEEK/MWCNT electrodes with surface area densities of 7.3 and 7.1 mm-1. To enhance SC performance, the 3D-printed electrodes are coated with a conductive polymer, PEDOT:PSS. The architected cellular electrodes exhibit significantly improved capacitive properties, with the cellular electrode (7.1 mm-1) displaying a capacitance nearly four times greater than that of the solid 3D-printed electrode-based SCs. Moreover, the PEDOT:PSS-coated cellular electrode (7.1 mm-1) demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 12.55 mF·cm-3 at 50 mV·s-1, contrasting to SCs based on 3D-printed cellular electrodes (4.09 mF·cm-3 at 50 mV·s-1) without the coating. The conductive PEDOT:PSS coating proves effective in reducing surface resistance, resulting in a decreased voltage drop during the SCs' charging and discharging processes. Ultimately, the 3D-printed cellular nanocomposite electrode with the conductive polymer coating achieves an energy density of 1.98 μW h·cm-3 at a current of 70 μA. This study underscores how the combined effect of the surface area density of porous electrodes enabled by 3D printing, along with the conductivity imparted by the polymer coating, synergistically improves the energy storage performance.

Project description:Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) light-transparent conductive composite thin films, consisting of dispersed multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and SiO2 matrix composites, were fabricated on a quartz glass substrate. Transparent and well-adhered amorphous thin films, with a thickness of 220 nm, were obtained by weak ultraviolet (UV) irradiation (4 mW cm-2 at 254 nm) for more than 6 h at 20-40 °C onto the precursor films, which were obtained by spin coating with a mixed solution of MWCNT in water and Si(IV) complex in ethanol. The electrical resistivity of MWCNT/SiO2 composite thin film is 0.7 Ω·cm, and transmittance in the wavelength region from DUV to visible light is higher than 80%. The MWCNT/SiO2 composite thin film showed scratch resistance at pencil hardness of 8H. Importantly, the resistivity of the MWCNT/SiO2 composite thin film was maintained at the original level even after heat treatment at 500 °C for 1 h. It was observed that the heat treatment of the composite thin film improved durability against both aqueous solutions involving a strong acid (HCl) and a strong base (NaOH).

Project description:Membrane separation is proved to be a powerful tool for several applications such as wastewater treatment or the elimination of various microorganisms from drinking water. In this study, the efficiency of inorganic composite-based multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) hybrid membranes was investigated in the removal of MS2 bacteriophages from contaminated water. With this object, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were coated with copper(I) oxide, titanium(IV) oxide and iron(III) oxide nanoparticles, respectively, and their virus removal capability was tested in both batch and flow experiments. Considering the possible pH range of drinking water, the filtration tests were carried out at pH 5.0, 7.5 and 9.0 as well. The extent of MS2 removal strongly depended on the pH values for each composite, which can be due to electrostatic interactions between the membrane and the virus. The most efficient removal (greater than or equal to 99.99%) was obtained with the Cu2O-coated MWCNT membrane in the whole pH range. The fabricated nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area measurement, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurement, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This study presents a simple route to design novel and effective nanocomposite-based hybrid membranes for virus removal.

Project description:The NiO-CNT and NiO-Fe-CNT composites that have been prepared from waste high density polyethylene plastic and their carbon nanotube (CNT) quality-dependent supercapacitance tuning have been reported here. Multiwalled CNT (MWCNT) formation has been confirmed from TEM and Raman spectra with an ID/IG ratio of 0.77, which stands for high graphitization. The specific surface area (SSA) of MWCNTs in the NiO-Fe-CNT composite was 87.8 m2/g, while in the NiO-CNT composite, it was 25 m2/g. NiO-Fe-CNT displayed higher specific capacitance and energy density (1360 Fg-1 and 1180 W h kg-1) than NiO-CNT (1250 Fg-1 and 1000 W h kg-1), which may be due to the presence of higher-quality MWCNTs in the NiO-Fe-CNT composite. NiO-Fe-CNT displayed higher contributions of electric double-layer capacitor (59%) behavior compared to NiO-CNT (38%) and represented a hybrid supercapacitor. NiO-Fe-CNT also displayed a capacitive retention of 96% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, studies in acidic electrolytes revealed higher performance of NiO-Fe-CNT than NiO-CNT, displaying specific capacitances of NiO-Fe-CNT to be 1147 Fg-1 in 2 M H2SO4 and 943 Fg-1 in 2 M HCl. It has been qualitatively explored that the quality of CNTs, SSA, and quantum confinement effects in the composites may be the factors responsible for the performance difference in NiO-Fe-CNT and NiO-CNT. The present work is geared toward the low-cost fabrication of high-quality CNT composites for supercapacitors and energy storage applications. The present work also contributes quantitatively to the understanding of CNT quality as an important parameter for the performance of CNT-composite-based supercapacitors.

Project description:A series of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) coated carbon fabrics was fabricated using a facile dip coating process, and their performance in electrical conductivity, thermal stability, tensile strength, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and shielding effectiveness (SE) was investigated. A solution of MWCNT oxide and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in water was used in the coating process. MWCNTs were observed to coat the surfaces of carbon fibers and to fill the pores in the carbon fabric. Electrical conductivity of the composites was 16.42 S cm−1. An EMI shielding effectiveness of 37 dB at 2 GHz was achieved with a single layer of C/C composites, whereas the double layers resulted in 68 dB EMI SE at 2.7 GHz. Fabricated composites had a specific SE of 486.54 dB cm3 g−1 and an absolute SE of approximately 35,000 dB cm2 g−1. According to the above results, MWCNT coated C/C composites have the potential to be used in advanced shielding applications such as aerospace and auto mobile electronic devices.
