Metal-free disproportionation of formic acid mediated by organoboranes.

ABSTRACT: In the presence of dialkylboranes, formic acid can be converted to formaldehyde and methanol derivatives without the need for an external reductant. This reactivity, in which formates serve as the sole carbon and hydride sources, represents the first example of the disproportionation of formate anions under metal-free conditions. Capitalizing on both experimental and computational (DFT) mechanistic considerations, the role of transient borohydride is highlighted in the reduction of formates and this reactivity was further exemplified in the methylation of TMP (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine) and in the transfer hydroboration reactions for the reduction of aldehydes.

Dehydrogenation, disproportionation and transfer hydrogenation reactions of formic acid catalyzed by molybdenum hydride compounds.

Project description:The cyclopentadienyl molybdenum hydride compounds, CpRMo(PMe3)3-x (CO) x H (CpR = Cp, Cp*; x = 0, 1, 2 or 3), are catalysts for the dehydrogenation of formic acid, with the most active catalysts having the composition CpRMo(PMe3)2(CO)H. The mechanism of the catalytic cycle is proposed to involve (i) protonation of the molybdenum hydride complex, (ii) elimination of H2 and coordination of formate, and (iii) decarboxylation of the formate ligand to regenerate the hydride species. NMR spectroscopy indicates that the nature of the resting state depends on the composition of the catalyst. For example, (i) the resting states for the CpMo(CO)3H and CpMo(PMe3)(CO)2H systems are the hydride complexes themselves, (ii) the resting state for the CpMo(PMe3)3H system is the protonated species [CpMo(PMe3)3H2]+, and (iii) the resting state for the CpMo(PMe3)2(CO)H system is the formate complex, CpMo(PMe3)2(CO)(κ1-O2CH), in the presence of a high concentration of formic acid, but CpMo(PMe3)2(CO)H when the concentration of acid is low. While CO2 and H2 are the principal products of the catalytic reaction induced by CpRMo(PMe3)3-x (CO) x H, methanol and methyl formate are also observed. The generation of methanol is a consequence of disproportionation of formic acid, while methyl formate is a product of subsequent esterification. The disproportionation of formic acid is a manifestation of a transfer hydrogenation reaction, which may also be applied to the reduction of aldehydes and ketones. Thus, CpMo(CO)3H also catalyzes the reduction of a variety of ketones and aldehydes to alcohols by formic acid, via a mechanism that involves ionic hydrogenation.

Highly Efficient Additive-Free Dehydrogenation of Neat Formic Acid.

Project description:Formic acid (FA) is a promising hydrogen carrier which can play an instrumental role in the overall implementation of a hydrogen economy. In this regard, it is important to generate H2 gas from neat FA without any solvent/additive, for which existing systems are scarce. Here we report the remarkable catalytic activity of a ruthenium 9H-acridine pincer complex for this process. The catalyst is unusually stable and robust in FA even at high temperatures and can catalyse neat FA dehydrogenation for over a month, with a total turnover number of 1,701,150, while also generating high H2/CO2 gas pressures (tested up to 100 bars). Mechanistic investigations and DFT studies are conducted to fully understand the molecular mechanism to the process. Overall, the high activity, stability, selectivity, simplicity and versatility of the system to generate a CO-free H2/CO2 gas stream and high pressure from neat FA makes it promising for large-scale implementation.

Metal-free dehydrogenation of formic acid to H2 and CO2 using boron-based catalysts.

Project description:Formic acid is at the crossroads of novel sustainable energy strategies because it is an efficient H2 carrier. Yet, to date, its decomposition to H2 relies on metal-based catalysts. Herein, we describe the first metal-free catalysts able to promote the dehydrogenation of formic acid. Using dialkylborane derivatives, HCOOH is decomposed to H2 and CO2 in the presence of a base with high selectivity. Experimental and computational results point to the involvement of bis(formyloxy)borates as key intermediates in the C-H bond activation of a formate ligand.

Efficient additive-free formic acid dehydrogenation with a NNN-ruthenium complex.

Project description:A new ruthenium complex containing a pyridylidene amine-based NNN ligand was developed as a catalyst precursor for formic acid dehydrogenation, which, as a rare example, does not require basic additives to display high activity (TOF ∼10 000 h-1). Conveniently, the complex is air-stable, but sensitive to light. Mechanistic investigations using UV-vis and NMR spectroscopic monitoring correlated with gas evolution profiles indicate rapid and reversible protonation of the central nitrogen of the NNN ligand as key step of catalyst activation, followed by an associative step for formic acid dehydrogenation.

Manganese-Mediated C-C Bond Formation: Alkoxycarbonylation of Organoboranes.

Project description:Alkoxycarbonylations are important and versatile reactions that result in the formation of a new C-C bond. Herein, we report on a new and halide-free alkoxycarbonylation reaction that does not require the application of an external carbon monoxide atmosphere. Instead, manganese carbonyl complexes and organo(alkoxy)borate salts react to form an ester product containing the target C-C bond. The required organo(alkoxy)borate salts are conveniently generated from the stoichiometric reaction of an organoborane and an alkoxide salt and can be telescoped without purification. The protocol leads to the formation of both aromatic and aliphatic esters and gives complete control over the ester's substitution (e.g., OMe, O t Bu, OPh). A reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of stoichiometric reactivity studies, spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The new chemistry is particularly relevant for the field of Mn(I) catalysis and clearly points to a potential pathway toward irreversible catalyst deactivation.

Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensor Based on Tb(III) Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework for Formic Acid.

Project description:Formic acid is a common chemical raw material, the effective detection of which is of importance to food safety and environmental quality. In this work, the lanthanide functionalized dual-emission metal-organic framework (TH25) was prepared as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for formic acid. This ratiometric sensor has a good detection performance with high selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Together with a low limit of detection of 2.1 ppm, these characters promise the ability to sense at low levels as well as a practical detection ability. This work provides ideas for the design and synthesis of effective chemical sensors for organic acids.

Combination of nanoparticles with single-metal sites synergistically boosts co-catalyzed formic acid dehydrogenation.

Project description:The development of hydrogen technologies is at the heart of a green economy. As prerequisite for implementation of hydrogen storage, active and stable catalysts for (de)hydrogenation reactions are needed. So far, the use of precious metals associated with expensive costs dominates in this area. Herein, we present a new class of lower-cost Co-based catalysts (Co-SAs/NPs@NC) in which highly distributed single-metal sites are synergistically combined with small defined nanoparticles allowing efficient formic acid dehydrogenation. The optimal material with atomically dispersed CoN2C2 units and encapsulated 7-8 nm nanoparticles achieves an excellent gas yield of 1403.8 mL·g-1·h-1 using propylene carbonate as solvent, with no activity loss after 5 cycles, which is 15 times higher than that of the commercial Pd/C. In situ analytic experiments show that Co-SAs/NPs@NC enhances the adsorption and activation of the key intermediate monodentate HCOO*, thereby facilitating the following C-H bond breaking, compared to related single metal atom and nanoparticle catalysts. Theoretical calculations show that the integration of cobalt nanoparticles elevates the d-band center of the Co single atoms as the active center, which consequently enhances the coupling of the carbonyl O of the HCOO* intermediate to the Co centers, thereby lowering the energy barrier.

The Impact of Metal Centers in the M-MOF-74 Series on Formic Acid Production.

Project description:The confinement effect of porous materials on the thermodynamical equilibrium of the CO2 hydrogenation reaction presents a cost-effective alternative to transition metal catalysts. In metal-organic frameworks, the type of metal center has a greater impact on the enhancement of formic acid production than the scale of confinement resulting from the pore size. The M-MOF-74 series enables a comprehensive study of how different metal centers affect HCOOH production, minimizing the effect of pore size. In this work, molecular simulations were used to analyze the adsorption of HCOOH and the CO2 hydrogenation reaction in M-MOF-74, where M = Ni, Cu, Co, Fe, Mn, Zn. We combine classical simulations and density functional theory calculations to gain insights into the mechanisms that govern the low coverage adsorption of HCOOH in the surrounding of the metal centers of M-MOF-74. The impact of metal centers on the HCOOH yield was assessed by Monte Carlo simulations in the grand-canonical ensemble, using gas-phase compositions of CO2, H2, and HCOOH at chemical equilibrium at 298.15-800 K, 1-60 bar. The performance of M-MOF-74 in HCOOH production follows the same order as the uptake and the heat of HCOOH adsorption: Ni > Co > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu. Ni-MOF-74 increases the mole fraction of HCOOH by ca. 105 times compared to the gas phase at 298.15 K, 60 bar. Ni-MOF-74 has the potential to be more economically attractive for CO2 conversion than transition metal catalysts, achieving HCOOH production at concentrations comparable to the highest formate levels reported for transition metal catalysts and offering a more valuable molecular form of the product.

Base-Free Catalytic Hydrogen Production from Formic Acid Mediated by a Cubane-Type Mo3S4 Cluster Hydride.

Project description:Formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation is an attractive process in the implementation of a hydrogen economy. To make this process greener and less costly, the interest nowadays is moving toward non-noble metal catalysts and additive-free protocols. Efficient protocols using earth abundant first row transition metals, mostly iron, have been developed, but other metals, such as molybdenum, remain practically unexplored. Herein, we present the transformation of FA to form H2 and CO2 through a cluster catalysis mechanism mediated by a cuboidal [Mo3S4H3(dmpe)3]+ hydride cluster in the absence of base or any other additive. Our catalyst has proved to be more active and selective than the other molybdenum compounds reported to date for this purpose. Kinetic studies, reaction monitoring, and isolation of the [Mo3S4(OCHO)3(dmpe)3]+ formate reaction intermediate, in combination with DFT calculations, have allowed us to formulate an unambiguous mechanism of FA dehydrogenation. Kinetic studies indicate that the reaction at temperatures up to 60 °C ends at the triformate complex and occurs in a single kinetic step, which can be interpreted in terms of statistical kinetics at the three metal centers. The process starts with the formation of a dihydrogen-bonded species with Mo-H···HOOCH bonds, detected by NMR techniques, followed by hydrogen release and formate coordination. Whereas this process is favored at temperatures up to 60 °C, the subsequent β-hydride elimination that allows for the CO2 release and closes the catalytic cycle is only completed at higher temperatures. The cycle also operates starting from the [Mo3S4(OCHO)3(dmpe)3]+ formate intermediate, again with preservation of the cluster integrity, which adds our proposal to the list of the infrequent cluster catalysis reaction mechanisms.

Hydrogen Evolution from Additive-Free Formic Acid Dehydrogenation Using Weakly Basic Resin-Supported Pd Catalyst.

Project description:Hydrogen, as a noncarbon energy source, plays a significant role in future clean energy vectors. However, concerns about the safe storage and transportation of hydrogen gas limit its wide application. Featured with high H2 volumetric density, nontoxicity, and nonflammability, formic acid (FA) is regarded as one of the most encouraging chemical hydrogen carriers. The search for heterogeneous catalysts with decent catalytic activity and stability for FA decomposition is one of the hottest research topics in this area. In this paper, three weakly basic resins with different functional groups, including D201 with -N+(CH3)3, D301 with -N(CH3)2, and D311 with -NH2, were investigated as alternative catalyst supports for Pd catalysts. The prepared basic resin-supported Pd catalysts were evaluated for the FA dehydrogenation reaction under atmospheric pressure and temperatures ranging from 30 to 70 °C. The results showed that the catalytic activity of the three different resin-supported Pd catalysts follows the order of Pd/D201 > Pd/D301 > Pd/D311. Particularly, a high turnover frequency value of 547.6 h-1 was achieved when employing Pd/D201 as the FA dehydrogenation reaction catalyst at 50 °C. The apparent activation energies for the three different Pd/resin catalysts were calculated, of which the Pd/D210 catalyst demonstrates the lowest activation energy of 42.9 kJ mol-1. The reasons for the superior catalytic behavior, together with the reaction mechanism, were then investigated and illustrated.
