Determination of the Electrochemical Area of Screen-Printed Electrochemical Sensing Platforms.

ABSTRACT: Screen-printed electrochemical sensing platforms, due to their scales of economy and high reproducibility, can provide a useful approach to translate laboratory-based electrochemistry into the field. An important factor when utilising screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) is the determination of their real electrochemical surface area, which allows for the benchmarking of these SPEs and is an important parameter in quality control. In this paper, we consider the use of cyclic voltammetry and chronocoulometry to allow for the determination of the real electrochemical area of screen-printed electrochemical sensing platforms, highlighting to experimentalists the various parameters that need to be diligently considered and controlled in order to obtain useful measurements of the real electroactive area.

Electrochemical sensing platform based on screen-printed carbon electrode modified with plasma polymerized acrylonitrile nanofilms for determination of bupropion.

Project description:A original electrochemical sensing platform, based on screen-printed electrodes modification with plasma polymerized acrylonitrile (pp-AN) nanofilms is proposed. For that purpose, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process was conducted in a parallel plate (13.56 MHz) plasma reactor for 2 min with discharge power of 10 W. The surface topography and electrochemical properties of prepared sensors were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical characteristics of pp-AN/SPCE and pp-AN/SPAuE sensors was investigated for model redox pair [Fe(CN)6]4-/3-. Conducted research confirmed the excellent chemical stability, durability, wide potential window, high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, and, most importantly, the ability to standardize the sensors. The pp-AN/SPCE sensor was applied to the determination of bupropion, an antidepressant drug whose intake has increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. The voltammetric response of pp-AN/SPCE for BUP was linear in two concentration ranges of 0.63-10.0 and 10.0-50.0 μmol L-1, with a detection limit of 0.21 μmol L-1. Satisfactory recoveries (96.2-102%) and good precision (RSD below 4.1%) obtained for environmental and biological samples confirmed the usefulness of the sensor for the analysis of various kinds of samples.

2D-Hexagonal Boron Nitride Screen-Printed Bulk-Modified Electrochemical Platforms Explored towards Oxygen Reduction Reactions.

Project description:A low-cost, scalable and reproducible approach for the mass production of screen-printed electrode (SPE) platforms that have varying percentage mass incorporations of 2D hexagonal boron nitride (2D-hBN) (2D-hBN/SPEs) is demonstrated herein. These novel 2D-hBN/SPEs are explored as a potential metal-free electrocatalysts towards oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) within acidic media where their performance is evaluated. A 5% mass incorporation of 2D-hBN into the SPEs resulted in the most beneficial ORR catalysis, reducing the ORR onset potential by ca. 200 mV in comparison to bare/unmodified SPEs. Furthermore, an increase in the achievable current of 83% is also exhibited upon the utilisation of a 2D-hBN/SPE in comparison to its unmodified equivalent. The screen-printed fabrication approach replaces the less-reproducible and time-consuming drop-casting technique of 2D-hBN and provides an alternative approach for the large-scale manufacture of novel electrode platforms that can be utilised in a variety of applications.

A stretchable and screen-printed electrochemical sensor for glucose determination in human perspiration.

Project description:Here we present two types of all-printable, highly stretchable, and inexpensive devices based on platinum (Pt)-decorated graphite for glucose determination in physiological fluids. Said devices are: a non-enzymatic sensor and an enzymatic biosensor, the latter showing promising results. Glucose has been quantified by measuring hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) reduction by chronoamperometry at -0.35V (vs pseudo-Ag/AgCl) using glucose oxidase immobilized on Pt-decorated graphite. The sensor performs well for the quantification of glucose in phosphate buffer solution (0.25M PBS, pH 7.0), with a linear range between 0 mM and 0.9mM, high sensitivity and selectivity, and a low limit of detection (LOD). Thus, it provides an alternative non-invasive and on-body quantification of glucose levels in human perspiration. This biosensor has been successfully applied on real human perspiration samples and results also show a significant correlation between glucose concentration in perspiration and glucose concentration in blood measured by a commercial glucose meter.

Microfluidic Device Directly Fabricated on Screen-Printed Electrodes for Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Sensing of PSA.

Project description:How to fabricate scale low-cost microfluidic device for detection of biomarkers owns a great requirement. Herein, it is for the first time reported that a new microfluidic device based on bonding polydimethylsiloxane microfluidic channels onto the substrate of a screen-printed electrode with coating glass solution was fabricated for electrochemical sensing of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Compared to traditional microfabrication processes, this method is simple, fast, low cost, and also suitable for mass production. The prepared screen-printed electrode-based microfluidic device (CASPE-MFD) was used for the detection of the PSA in human serum. The prepared CASPE-MFD had a detection limit of 0.84 pg/mL (25.8 fM) and a good linearity with PSA concentration ranging from 0.001 to 10 ng/mL, which showed a great promise platform toward the development of miniaturized, low-cost electrochemical microfluidic device for use in human health, environmental monitoring, and other applications.

Screen-Printed Gold Electrodes as Passive Samplers and Voltammetric Platforms for the Determination of Gaseous Elemental Mercury.

Project description:We present a methodology for the determination of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM). It is based on passive sampling of Hg on screen-printed gold electrodes (SPGEs), followed by the measurement of amalgamated mercury by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry. We have explored in detail the behavior of the SPGE electrode surface during the sampling process (by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry), the stability of the voltammetric signals, and the inter-electrode reproducibility, and obtained acceptable results. Adsorption of mercury onto the SPGE follows a nearly linear behavior until the sorbent becomes saturated (equilibrium phase) for different mercury concentrations, allowing to select a sampling time of 30 min for calibration. The theoretical behavior of the sampling system was modeled, considering the changes in the diffusive path length between the porous diffusive barrier and the adsorbed surface, L. Finally, we have tested two GEM calibration protocols. The first one is based on the measurement of the mercury stripping peak area, AHg, and the second one is based on the measurement of the mass of mercury, mHg, by standard additions. We found good correlation coefficients between the GEM concentration for both AHg (R2 = 0.9591) and mHg (R2 = 9615) in the range of 5.82 to 59.29 ng dm-3 GEM. Detection limits were 5.32 and 5.22 ng dm-3 for AHg and mHg, respectively. Our results open a new line of electroanalytical strategies for the determination of GEM in atmospheric samples.

Facile fabrication of screen-printed MoS<sub>2</sub> electrodes for electrochemical sensing of dopamine.

Project description:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) screen-printed working electrodes were developed for dopamine (DA) electrochemical sensing. MoS2 working electrodes were prepared from high viscosity screen-printable inks containing various concentrations and sizes of MoS2 particles and ethylcellulose binder. Rheological properties of MoS2 inks and their suitability for screen-printing were analyzed by viscosity curve, screen-printing simulation and oscillatory modulus. MoS2 inks were screen-printed onto conductive FTO (Fluorine-doped Tin Oxide) substrates. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) analysis were used to characterize the homogeneity, topography and thickness of the screen-printed MoS2 electrodes. The electrochemical performance was assessed through differential pulse voltammetry. Results showed an extensive linear detection of dopamine from 1 µM to 300 µM (R2 = 0.996, sensitivity of 5.00 × 10-8 A μM-1), with the best limit of detection being 246 nM. This work demonstrated the possibility of simple, low-cost and rapid preparation of high viscosity MoS2 ink and their use to produce screen-printed FTO/MoS2 electrodes for dopamine detection.

Screen-Printed Carbon Electrodes with Cationic Cyclodextrin Carbon Nanotubes and Ferrocenyl-Carnosine for Electrochemical Sensing of Hg(II).

Project description:The study reports the use of nanoassembly based on cationic cyclodextrin carbon nanotubes (CNT-CDs) and ferrocenylcarnosine (FcCAR) for electrochemical sensing of Hg(II) in aqueous solution. β-cyclodextrins (CDs) were grafted onto CNTs by a click chemistry reaction between heptakis-(6-azido-6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin and alkyne-terminated CNTs. The cationic amine groups on the CD units were produced by the subsequent reduction of the residual nitrogen groups. The chemical composition and morphology of CNT-CDs were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. A N,N-dimethylformamide dispersion of CNT-CDs was cast on the surface of screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs), and the electrochemical response was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) using [Fe(CN)6]3- as the redox probe. The ability of SPCE/CNT-CD to significantly enhance the electroactive properties of the redox probe was combined with a suitable recognition element (FcCAR) for Hg(II). The electrochemical response of the CNT-CD/FcCAR nanoassembly was evaluated by CV and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The analytical performance of the Hg(II) sensor was evaluated by differential pulsed voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The oxidative peak current showed a linear concentration dependence in the range of 1-100 nM, with a sensitivity of 0.12 μA/nM, a limit of detection of 0.50 nM, and a limit of quantification of 1 nM.

Electrochemical Properties of Screen-Printed Carbon Nano-Onion Electrodes.

Project description:The properties of carbon nano-onions (CNOs) make them attractive electrode materials/additives for the development of low-cost, simple to use and highly sensitive Screen Printed Electrodes (SPEs). Here, we report the development of the first CNO-based ink for the fabrication of low-cost and disposable electrodes, leading to high-performance sensors. Achieving a true dispersion of CNOs is intrinsically challenging and a key aspect of the ink formulation. The screen-printing ink formulation is achieved by carefully selecting and optimising the conductive materials (graphite (GRT) and CNOs), the polymer binder, the organic solvent and the plasticiser. Our CNO/GRT-based screen-printed electrodes consist of an interconnected network of conducting carbon particles with a uniform distribution. Electrochemical studies show a heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant of 1.3 ± 0.7 × 10-3 cm·s-1 and a higher current density than the ferrocene/ferrocenium coupled to a commercial graphite SPEs. In addition, the CNO/GRT SPE can detect dopamine in the concentration range of 10.0-99.9 µM with a limit of detection of 0.92 µM (N = 3). They exhibit a higher analytical sensitivity than the commercial graphite-based SPE, with a 4-fold improvement observed. These results open up the possibility of using high-performing CNO-based SPEs for electrochemical applications including sensors, battery electrodes and electrocatalysis.

Carbon Nanomaterials-Based Screen-Printed Electrodes for Sensing Applications.

Project description:Electrochemical sensors consisting of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) are recurrent devices in the recent literature for applications in different fields of interest and contribute to the expanding electroanalytical chemistry field. This is due to inherent characteristics that can be better (or only) achieved with the use of SPEs, including miniaturization, cost reduction, lower sample consumption, compatibility with portable equipment, and disposability. SPEs are also quite versatile; they can be manufactured using different formulations of conductive inks and substrates, and are of varied designs. Naturally, the analytical performance of SPEs is directly affected by the quality of the material used for printing and modifying the electrodes. In this sense, the most varied carbon nanomaterials have been explored for the preparation and modification of SPEs, providing devices with an enhanced electrochemical response and greater sensitivity, in addition to functionalized surfaces that can immobilize biological agents for the manufacture of biosensors. Considering the relevance and timeliness of the topic, this review aimed to provide an overview of the current scenario of the use of carbonaceous nanomaterials in the context of making electrochemical SPE sensors, from which different approaches will be presented, exploring materials traditionally investigated in electrochemistry, such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, carbon black, and those more recently investigated for this (carbon quantum dots, graphitic carbon nitride, and biochar). Perspectives on the use and expansion of these devices are also considered.

Electrochemical (Bio)Sensors for Pesticides Detection Using Screen-Printed Electrodes.

Project description:Pesticides are among the most important contaminants in food, leading to important global health problems. While conventional techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS) have traditionally been utilized for the detection of such food contaminants, they are relatively expensive, time-consuming and labor intensive, limiting their use for point-of-care (POC) applications. Electrochemical (bio)sensors are emerging devices meeting such expectations, since they represent reliable, simple, cheap, portable, selective and easy to use analytical tools that can be used outside the laboratories by non-specialized personnel. Screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) stand out from the variety of transducers used in electrochemical (bio)sensing because of their small size, high integration, low cost and ability to measure in few microliters of sample. In this context, in this review article, we summarize and discuss about the use of SPEs as analytical tools in the development of (bio)sensors for pesticides of interest for food control. Finally, aspects related to the analytical performance of the developed (bio)sensors together with prospects for future improvements are discussed.
