Two new species of Brusqeulia Razowski & Becker, 2000 from the Neotropics, with comments on the systematic position of the genus in relation to the Apolychrosis Amsel, 1962 group of genera (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae, Cochylini).

ABSTRACT: Two new species of the neotropical genus Brusqeulia Razowski & Becker, 2000, are described and illustrated: B. yunkensis Pérez Santa-Rita & Baixeras, sp. n. from Bolivia and B. araguensis Pérez Sant-Rita & Baixeras, sp. n. from Venezuela. The systematic position and diagnostic characters of the genus are reviewed, resulting in the synonymy of Pinhaisania Razowski & Becker, 2000, with Brusqeulia, and the combination B. crispula (Razowski & Becker, 2000), comb. n. New characters of the female genitalia are discussed.

Circanota: a new genus of Sparganothini from the Neotropics, and its two new species (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae).

Project description:Circanota, new genus, and its two new species, Circanotaundulata sp. n. (type species), from Costa Rica and Panama, and Circanotasimplex sp. n., from Panama and Ecuador, are described and illustrated. Although superficially similar to some species of Platynota Clemens, 1860, Circanota appears to be more closely related to members of a putative clade within Sparganothini defined by a slender crescent-shaped signum in the corpus bursae of the female genitalia. The most conspicuous autapomorphy for Circanota is the strongly undulate costa of the male and female forewing. Barcode sequence data (i.e., cytochrome oxidase I) from Circanotaundulata (n = 12) form a tight cluster with exceedingly limited genetic divergence (less than 0.1%); specimens of Circanotasimplex have not been sequenced. In neighbor-joining trees based on COI, Circanota is portrayed nearest Sparganothoides, which is consistent with morphological evidence.

Review of the genus Fibuloides Kuznetsov in China (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae, Olethreutinae).

Project description:Species of the genus Fibuloides Kuznetsov that occur in China are reviewed. Fibuloides trapezoidea, sp. n.is described as new; Fibuloides levatana (Kuznetsov) and Fibuloides modificana Kuznetsov are newly recorded for China; Acroclita nigrovenana Kuznetsov, syn. n. is considered as a synonym of Fibuloides corinthia (Meyrick); and Eucoenogenes elongata Zhang & Li and Eucoenogenes wuyiensis Zhang & Li are transferred to Fibuloides, resulting in two new combinations. A key to the nine Chinese species of Fibuloides is given.

A new genus of Grapholitini from Africa related to Thaumatotibia (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae).

Project description:Thaumatovalva gen. n. is described and illustrated from the Afrotropical region. As currently defined the genus includes four species: T. deprinsorum sp. n. from the Democratic Republic of Congo; T. albolineana sp. n. (type species) from the Democratic Republic of Congo; T. spinai (Razowski & Trematerra), comb. n., from Ethiopia and Nigeria; and T. limbata (Diakonoff), comb. n., from the Seychelles and Kenya. Thaumatovalva limbata has been reared from the fruit of Cordia somaliensis Baker and C. monoica Roxb. (Boraginaceae) in Kenya. Although structures of the male and female genitalia are extremely similar among three of the four species, male secondary scales on the under surface of the hindwing easily distinguish them.

Revision of the genus Digonis (Lepidoptera, Geometridae): new species and new genera.

Project description:The taxonomic study of the Chilean Ennomini genera is still in its early stages. Within this group, the maculation patterns of Chilean species are uniform and often inadequate for distinguishing between many species, compounded by a lack of taxonomic revisions focused on the genera within the tribe. In this study, the genus Digonis Butler, 1882, is reviewed and redefined based on characteristics of wing patterns and genitalia. Digonis comprises the following five species: D.aspersa Butler, 1882, D.cervinaria (Blanchard, 1852), D.punctifera Butler, 1882, D.gungnir Ramos-González & Parra, sp. nov., and D.apocrypha Ramos-González & Parra, sp. nov. Additionally, D.cuprea Butler, 1882 is synonymized with D.cervinaria (Blanchard, 1852), and all varieties of D.punctifera Butler, 1882, and D.cuprea are synonymized with their respective species. Furthermore, two new genera are introduced: Phasmadigonis Ramos-González & Parra, gen. nov., erected for P.alba (Butler, 1882), comb. nov., and Gugnelve Ramos-González & Parra, gen. nov., established for G.butleri Ramos-González & Parra, sp. nov. With the species and genus descriptions, a comparative diagnosis, genitalia illustrations for all species, and wing venation for each genus are provided.

Mitogenomes of Nine Asian Skipper Genera and Their Phylogenetic Position (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae: Pyrginae).

Project description:In this study, complete mitochondrial genomes of nine species representing three tribes in the subfamily Pyrginae sensu lato were newly sequenced. The mitogenomes are closed double-stranded circular molecules, with the length ranging from 15,232 bp to 15,559 bp, which all encode 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and a control region. The orientation and gene order of these nine mitogenomes are identical to the inferred ancestral arrangement of insects. All PCGs exhibit the typical start codon ATN except for cox1 (using CGA) and cox2 (using TTG) in Mooreana trichoneura. Most of the PCGs terminate with a TAA stop codon, while cox1, cox2, nad4, and nad5 end with the incomplete codon single T. For the different datasets, we found that the one comprising all 37 genes of the mitogenome produced the highest nodal support, indicating that the inclusion of RNAs improves the phylogenetic signal. This study re-confirmed the status of Capila, Pseudocoladenia, and Sarangesa; namely, Capila belongs to the tribe Tagiadini, and Pseudocoladenia and Sarangesa to the tribe Celaenorrhini. Diagnostic characters distinguishing the two tribes, the length of the forewing cell and labial palpi, are no longer significant. Two populations of Pseudocoladenia dan fabia from China and Myanmar and P. dan dhyana from Thailand are confirmed as conspecific.

Review of the genus Isodemis Diakonoff (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) from China, with description of three new species.

Project description:The genus Isodemis Diakonoff, 1952 in China is reviewed, with seven species recognized. Three new species are described: Isodemis quadratasp. n., Isodemis guangxiensissp. n. and Isodemis hainanensissp. n. The female of Isodemis stenotera Diakonoff, 1983 is described for the first time. Variation within Isodemis illiberalis (Meyrick, 1918) and Isodemis stenotera is briefly discussed. Images of the adults and genitalia are provided, along with a key to the described species.

A food plant specialist in Sparganothini: A new genus and species from Costa Rica (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae).

Project description:Sparganocosma docsturnerorum Brown, new genus and new species, is described and illustrated from Área de Conservación (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. The new genus shares a long, crescent- or ribbon-shaped signum in the corpus bursae of the female genitalia with Aesiocopa Zeller, 1877, Amorbia Clemens, 1860, Amorbimorpha Kruse, 2011, Coelostathma Clemens, 1860, Lambertiodes Diakonoff, 1959, Paramorbia Powell & Lambert, 1986, Rhynchophyllus Meyrick, 1932, Sparganopseustis Powell & Lambert, 1986, Sparganothina Powell, 1986, and Sparganothoides Lambert & Powell, 1986. Putative autapomorphies for Sparganocosma include the extremely short uncus; the smooth (unspined) transtilla; and the upturned, free, distal rod of the sacculus. Adults of Sparganocosma docsturnerorum have been reared numerous times (>50) from larvae collected feeding on rain forest Asplundia utilis (Oerst.) Harling and Asplundia microphylla (Oerst.) Harling (Cyclanthaceae) at intermediate elevations (375-500 m) in ACG. Whereas most Sparganothini are generalists, typically feeding on two or more plant families, Sparganocosma docsturnerorum appears to be a specialist on Asplundia, at least in ACG. The solitary parasitoid wasp Sphelodon wardae Godoy & Gauld (Ichneumonidae; Banchinae) has been reared only from the larvae of Sparganocosma docsturnerorum.

The genus Syntozyga Lower (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) in China, with descriptions of two new species.

Project description:Species of the genus Syntozyga Lower, 1901 (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae, Olethreutinae) from China are studied. Syntozyga apicispinata sp. nov. and S. similispirographa sp. nov. are described, S. pedias (Meyrick, 1920) is recorded for the first time from China, and S. spirographa (Diakonoff, 1968) is newly recorded from the Chinese mainland. Adults and genitalia are illustrated, and a distribution map of the Chinese species is given. Keys to identify the Chinese species of Syntozyga are provided. Species of the genus are well clustered in a neighbor-joining tree based on the sequence data of the COI gene. COI sequences corresponding to the new species and S. spirographa (Diakonoff, 1968) are submitted to BOLD.

A New Termitophilous Genus of Paederinae Rove Beetles (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) from the Neotropics and Its Phylogenetic Position.

Project description:We describe a new genus and species of Paederinae rove beetles, Ruptor cordatus gen. et sp. nov., which lives in the arboreal nests of the termite Labiotermes labralis (Holmgren, 1906) in the Amazon lowlands of Peru. The morphology of Ruptor gen. nov. is highly derived, apparently due to its close association with the termite host, and thus, morphologically, the genus cannot be classified further than Lathrobiini incertae sedis. In order to address the sister-group relationships of Ruptor gen. nov., we conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis based on seven gene fragments. The analysis indeed resolved the genus as a member of the tribe Lathrobiini and placed it nested within the informal clade of 'Medonina and allied taxa'. We provide a morphological comparison of the new genus with all known myrmeco- and termitophilous representatives of the subfamily, and to the extent possible, we illustrate other relevant and poorly known Neotropical Paederinae inquilines.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Phiaris dolosana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

Project description:We describe the complete mitochondrial genome of Phiaris dolosana. It is 15,562 bp in length, and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and a 612 bp D-Loop. All PCGs start with ATN codon except for COI gene, which uses CGA as the initiation codon. Nine of 13 PCGs use a typical stop codon of TAA, the rest use incomplete stop codon of T or TA. Phylogenetic analysis of P. dolosana with other 17 leaf rollers is conducted with neighbor-joining method, the result is consistent with the conventional classification.
