Project description:Solvent engineering by Lewis-base solvent and anti-solvent is well known for forming uniform and stable perovskite thin films. The perovskite phase crystallizes from an intermediate Lewis-adduct upon annealing-induced crystallization. Herein, it is explored the effects of trimethyl phosphate (TMP), as a novel aprotic Lewis-base solvent with a low donor number for the perovskite film formation and photovoltaic characteristics of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). As compared to dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) or dimethylformamide (DMF), the usage of TMP directly crystallizes the perovskite phase, i.e., reduces the intermediate phase to a negligible degree, right after the spin-coating, owing to the high miscibility of TMP with the anti-solvent and weak bonding in the Lewis adduct. Interestingly, the PSCs based on methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3 ) derived from TMP/DMF-mixed solvent exhibit a higher average power conversion efficiency of 19.68% (the best: 20.02%) with a smaller hysteresis in the current-voltage curve, compared to the PSCs that are fabricated using DMSO/DMF-mixed (19.14%) or DMF-only (18.55%) solvents. The superior photovoltaic properties are attributed to the lower defect density of the TMP/DMF-derived perovskite film. The results indicate that a high-performance PSC can be achieved by combining a weak Lewis base with a well-established solvent engineering process.

Project description:Understanding the initial ultrafast excited state dynamics of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) perovskite is of vital importance to enable its fullest utilisation in optoelectronic devices and the design of improved materials. Here we have combined advanced measurements of the ultrafast photoluminescence from MAPI films up to 0.6 eV above the relaxed excited state with cutting-edge advanced non-adiabatic quantum dynamics simulations, to provide a powerful unique insight into the earliest time behaviour in MAPI. Our joint experimental-theoretical approach highlights that the cooling of holes from deep in the valence band to the valence band edge is fast, occurring on a 100-500 fs timescale. Cooling of electrons from high in the conduction band to the conduction band edge, however, is much slower, on the order of 1-10 ps. Density of states calculations indicate that excited states with holes deep in the valence band are greatly favoured upon photoexcitation, and this matches well with the fast (100-500 fs) formation time for the relaxed excited state observed in our ultrafast PL measurements. Consequently we are able to provide a complete observation of the initial excited state evolution in this important prototypical material.

Project description:Perovskite solar cells (PeSCs) were fabricated by using Cs x FA1-x PbI3-x Cl x as the photoactive layer, and the effects of different proportions of cesium chloride (CsCl)/formamidinium iodide on perovskites were investigated. Cesium (Cs) can stabilize the α phase of the perovskite, while chlorine (Cl) can increase the size and crystallinity of perovskite crystals and reduce non-radiative cladding, thereby improving the performance of the overall device. The maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) measured for Cs0.2FA0.8PbI2.8Cl0.2-based PeSCs was 18.9%. To further improve the photovoltaic characteristics of PeSCs, Cs0.2FA0.8PbI2.8Cl0.2-based PeSCs were introduced into different concentrations of phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI) to modify the interface between the NiO x hole transport layer (HTL) and the perovskite photoactive layer, which can simultaneously promote excellent crystallinity of the perovskite layer and passivated interfacial defects, reducing recombination near the perovskite/HTL interface in PeSCs, thereby increasing the efficiency of the device. Compared with the control Cs0.2FA0.8PbI2.8Cl0.2-based PeSC, the PCE of PeSC with the PEAI (10 mg/mL)-modified NiO x /perovskite interface increased significantly from 18.9 to 20.2%.

Project description:Hybrid perovskites form an emerging family of exceptional light harvesting compounds. However, the mechanism underpinning their photovoltaic effect is still far from understood, which is impeded by a lack of clarity on their structures. Here we show that iodide ions in the methylammonium lead iodide migrate via interstitial sites at temperatures above 280 K. This coincides with temperature dependent static distortions resulting in pseudocubic local symmetry. Based on bond distance analysis, the migrating and distorted iodines are at lengths consistent with the formation of I2 molecules, suggesting a 2I-→I2+2e- redox couple. The actual formula of this compound is thus (CH3NH3)PbI3-2x(I2)x where x∼0.007 at room temperature. A crucial feature of the tetragonal structure is that the methylammonium ions do not sit centrally in the A-site cavity, but disordered around two off-centre orientations that facilitate the interstitial ion migration via a gate opening mechanism.

Project description:Although the performance of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is encouraging, the detailed working principles and mechanisms of PSCs remain to be further studied. In this work, an overshoot phenomenon of open-circuit voltage (Voc) was observed when the illumination light pulse was switched off. The evolution of the Voc overshoot was systematically investigated along with the intensity and the width of the light pulse, the background illumination, and pretreatment by different bias. Based on the experimental results, we could conclude that the Voc overshoot originated from carrier motion against carrier collection direction, which happened at the ionic-accumulation-induced band bending areas near the interfaces between the perovskite active layer and the two carrier transport layers. The investigation on the Voc overshoot can help us to better understand ionic migration, carrier accumulation, and recombination of PSCs under open-circuit conditions.

Project description:The demand for cheap and green energy as a replacement for fossil fuels has never been greater, and perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are among the leading means of meeting it. The surface properties of metal halide perovskite layers play crucial roles in the performance and durability of such cells. Consequently, a wide range of engineering processes for surface modification of perovskite layers has been investigated and among them is atmospheric pressure plasma (APP). Nevertheless, knowledge of the interaction between plasma and perovskite layers is still far from complete. In this work, CH3NH3PbI3 films were subjected to APP generated by a portable plasma source. A detailed understanding of band energy after plasma treatment is crucial to the investigation of the behavior of the perovskite layer. This study demonstrates a remarkable shift in the valence and conduction bands of a perovskite layer after plasma treatment, while band gap energy remains relatively constant. We found that short plasma treatment of perovskite layers resulted in higher performance and stability of PSCs.

Project description:Symmetrical electrochemical capacitors are attracting immense attention because of their fast charging-discharging ability, high energy density, and low cost of production. The current research in this area is mainly focused on exploring novel low-cost electrode materials with higher energy and power densities. In the present work, we fabricated an electrochemical double-layer capacitor using methylammonium bismuth iodide (CH3NH3)3Bi2I9, a lead-free, zero-dimensional hybrid perovskite material. A maximum areal capacitance of 5.5 mF/cm2 was obtained, and the device retained 84.8% of its initial maximum capacitance even after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles. Impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that the active layer provides a high surface area for the electrolyte to access. As a result, the charge transport resistance is reasonably low, which is advantageous for delivering excellent performance.

Project description:Perovskite solar cells offer remarkable performance, but further advances will require deeper understanding and control of the materials and processing. Here, we fabricate the first single crystal nanorods of intermediate phase (MAI-PbI2-DMSO), allowing us to directly observe the phase evolution while annealing in situ in a high-vacuum transmission electron microscope, which lets up separate thermal effects from other environmental conditions such as oxygen and moisture. We attain the first full determination of the crystal structures and orientations of the intermediate phase, evolving perovskite, precipitating PbI2, and e-beam induced PbI2 during phase conversion and decomposition. Surprisingly, the perovskite decomposition to PbI2 is reversible upon cooling, critical for long-term device endurance due to the formation of MAI-rich MAPbI3 and PbI2 upon heating. Quantitative measurements with a thermodynamic model suggest the decomposition is entropically driven. The single crystal MAPbI3 nanorods obtained via thermal cycling exhibit excellent mobility and trap density, with full reversibility up to 100 °C (above the maximum temperature for solar cell operation) under high vacuum, offering unique potential for high-performance flexible solar cells.

Project description:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved significantly high power-conversion efficiency within a short time. Most of the devices, including those with the highest efficiency, are based on a n-i-p structure utilizing a (doped) spiro-OMeTAD hole transport layer (HTL), which is an expensive material. Furthermore, doping has its own challenges affecting the processing and performance of the devices. Therefore, the need for low-cost, dopant-free hole transport materials is an urgent and critical issue for the commercialization of PSCs. In this study, n-i-p structure PSCs were fabricated in an ambient environment with cuprous iodide (CuI) HTL, employing a novel transfer-printing technique, in order to avoid the harmful interaction between the perovskite surface and the solvents of CuI. Moreover, in fabricated PSCs, the SnO2 electron transport layer (ETL) has been incorporated to reduce the processing temperature, as previously reported (n-i-p) devices with CuI HTL are based on TiO2, which is a high-temperature processed ETL. PSCs fabricated at 80 °C transfer-printing temperature with 20 nm iodized copper, under 1 sun illumination showed a promising efficiency of 8.3%, (JSC and FF; 19.3 A/cm2 and 53.8%), which is comparable with undoped spiro-OMeTAD PSCs and is the highest among the ambient-environment-fabricated PSCs utilizing CuI HTL.

Project description:Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite has attracted considerable recent interest for solution processable solar cells and other optoelectronic applications. The orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition in perovskite can significantly alter its optical, electrical properties and impact the corresponding applications. Here, we report a systematic investigation of the size-dependent orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition using a combined temperature-dependent optical, electrical transport and transmission electron microscopy study. Our studies of individual perovskite microplates with variable thicknesses demonstrate that the phase transition temperature decreases with reducing microplate thickness. The sudden decrease of mobility around phase transition temperature and the presence of hysteresis loops in the temperature-dependent mobility confirm that the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition is a first-order phase transition. Our findings offer significant fundamental insight on the temperature- and size-dependent structural, optical and charge transport properties of perovskite materials, and can greatly impact future exploration of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices from these materials.
