Tris(benzoimidazol)amine (L) complexes of pnictogen(iii) and pnictogen(v) cations and assessment of the [LP]³⁺/[LPF₂]³⁺ redox couple.

ABSTRACT: A series of cationic complexes involving a pnictogen(iii) (Pn = P, As, Sb) centre and the tetradentate ligand tris((1-ethyl-benzoimidazol-2-yl)methyl)amine (BIMEt₃) have been synthesized and comprehensively characterized. Oxidation of [P(BIMEt₃)]³⁺ with XeF₂ provides access to [PF₂(BIMEt₃)]³⁺ representing the first structurally characterized example of a phosphorus(v) centred trication.

Homoatomic cations: From [P5]+ to [P9].

Project description:Recent synthetic approaches to a series of [P9]X salts (X = [F{Al(ORF)3}2], [Al(ORF)4], and (RF = C(CF3)3); Ga2Cl7) overcome limitations in classical synthesis methods that proved unsuitable for phosphorus cations. These salts contain the homopolyatomic cation [P9]+ via (I) oxidation of P4 with NO[F{Al(ORF)3}2], (II) the arene-stabilized Co(I) sandwich complex [Co(arene)2][Al(ORF)4] [arene = ortho-difluorobenzene (o-DFB) and fluorobenzene (FB)], or (III) the reduction of [P5Cl2][Ga2Cl7] with Ga[Ga2Cl7] as Ga(I) source in the presence of P4. Quantum chemical CCSD(T) calculations suggest that [P9]+ formation from [Co(arene)2]+ occurs via the nido-type cluster [(o-DFB)CoP4]+, which resembles the isoelectronic, elusive [P5]+. Apparently, the nido-cation [P5]+ forms intermediately in all reactions, particularly during the Ga(I)-induced reduction of [P5Cl2]+ and the subsequent pick up of P4 to yield the final salt [P9][Ga2Cl7]. The solid-state structure of [P9][Ga2Cl7] reveals the anticipated D2d-symmetric Zintl-type cage for the [P9]+ cation. Our approaches show great potential to bring other [Pn]+ cations from the gas to the condensed phase.

Anion···Anion [AuI4]-···[AuI2]- Complex Trapped in the Solid State by Tetramethylammonium Cations.

Project description:A discrete π-hole···σ-hole dimer is synthesized and X-ray characterized. It presents a perfect thumbtack geometry where the σ-hole of the linear [AuI2]- anion points to the π-hole located above the central Au-atom of the [AuI4]- anion. Such discrete π-hole···σ-hole dimers are unprecedented in literature, since all mixed-valence gold(I/III) iodide compounds reported to date form infinite ···([AuI4]-···[AuI2]-) n ·· chains in the solid state. If an excess of iodine is used for the synthesis, triiodide [I3]- ions are partially incorporated into the [AuI2]- sites, forming infinite chains. The nature of the anion···anion interaction has been studied considering two possibilities: (i) a π-hole coinage bond or (ii) σ-hole halogen bond using high-level density functional theory calculations, the quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and the noncovalent interaction plot index.

Taming Super-Reduced Bi23- Radicals with Rare Earth Cations.

Project description:Here, we report the synthesis of two new sets of dibismuth-bridged rare earth molecules. The first series contains a bridging diamagnetic Bi22- anion, (Cp*2RE)2(μ-η2:η2-Bi2), 1-RE (where Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; RE = Gd (1-Gd), Tb (1-Tb), Dy (1-Dy), Y (1-Y)), while the second series comprises the first Bi23- radical-containing complexes for any d- or f-block metal ions, [K(crypt-222)][(Cp*2RE)2(μ-η2:η2-Bi2•)]·2THF (2-RE, RE = Gd (2-Gd), Tb (2-Tb), Dy (2-Dy), Y (2-Y); crypt-222 = 2.2.2-cryptand), which were obtained from one-electron reduction of 1-RE with KC8. The Bi23- radical-bridged terbium and dysprosium congeners, 2-Tb and 2-Dy, are single-molecule magnets with magnetic hysteresis. We investigate the nature of the unprecedented lanthanide-bismuth and bismuth-bismuth bonding and their roles in magnetic communication between paramagnetic metal centers, through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible/near-infrared (UV-vis/NIR) spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, DFT and multiconfigurational ab initio calculations. We find a πz* ground SOMO for Bi23-, which has isotropic spin-spin exchange coupling with neighboring metal ions of ca. -20 cm-1; however, the exchange coupling is strongly augmented by orbitally dependent terms in the anisotropic cases of 2-Tb and 2-Dy. As the first examples of p-block radicals beneath the second row bridging any metal ions, these studies have important ramifications for single-molecule magnetism, main group element, rare earth metal, and coordination chemistry at large.

Project description:The cationic N3-species [(p-HC6F4)3PN3]+ (1) featuring a perfluoro-arene phosphonium group serves as a N3+-source in stoichiometric reactions with several Lewis bases (L) allowing for the stepwise formation of [(L)N3]+ and [(L)2N3]+ cations (L = phosphine, carbene) with liberation of (p-HC6F4)3P. X-Ray diffraction analysis and computational studies provide insight into the bonding in these remarkably stable azido-cations.

Hyperpolarized 15N-labeled, deuterated tris (2-pyridylmethyl)amine as an MRI sensor of freely available Zn2.

Project description:Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) coupled with 15N magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides an opportunity to image quantitative levels of biologically important metal ions such as Zn2+, Mg2+ or Ca2+ using appropriately designed 15N enriched probes. For example, a Zn-specific probe could prove particularly valuable for imaging the tissue distribution of freely available Zn2+ ions, an important known metal ion biomarker in the pancreas, in prostate cancer, and in several neurodegenerative diseases. In the present study, we prepare the cell-permeable, 15N-enriched, d6-deuterated version of the well-known Zn2+ chelator, tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) and demonstrate that the polarized ligand had favorable T1 and linewidth characteristics for 15N MRI. Examples of how polarized TPA can be used to quantify freely available Zn2+ in homogenized human prostate tissue and intact cells are presented.

Molecular Zinc Hydride Cations [ZnH]+ : Synthesis, Structure, and CO2 Hydrosilylation Catalysis.

Project description:Protonolysis of [ZnH2 ]n with the conjugated Brønsted acid of the bidentate diamine TMEDA (N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethane-1,2-diamine) and TEEDA (N,N,N',N'-tetraethylethane-1,2-diamine) gave the zinc hydride cation [(L2 )ZnH]+ , isolable either as the mononuclear THF adduct [(L2 )ZnH(thf)]+ [BArF 4 ]- (L2 =TMEDA; BArF 4 - =[B(3,5-(CF3 )2 -C6 H3 )4 ]- ) or as the dimer [{(L2 )Zn)}2 (μ-H)2 ]2+ [BArF 4 ]- 2 (L2 =TEEDA). In contrast to [ZnH2 ]n , the cationic zinc hydrides are thermally stable and soluble in THF. [(L2 )ZnH]+ was also shown to form di- and trinuclear adducts of the elusive neutral [(L2 )ZnH2 ]. All hydride-containing cations readily inserted CO2 to give the corresponding formate complexes. [(TMEDA)ZnH]+ [BArF 4 ]- catalyzed the hydrosilylation of CO2 with tertiary hydrosilanes to give stepwise formoxy silane, methyl formate, and methoxy silane. The unexpected formation of methyl formate was shown to result from the zinc-catalyzed transesterification of methoxy silane with formoxy silane, which was eventually converted into methoxy silane as well.

From mixed group 13 cations [M(AlCp*)3]+ (M = Ga/In/Tl) to an Al4 + cluster.

Project description:AlCp*-complexes with transition metals have shown to be highly reactive and enable C-H or Si-H bond activation. Yet, complexes of AlCp* with low-valent main-group metals are scarce. Here, we report the syntheses of [M(AlCp*)3][Al(ORF)4] (RF = C(CF3)3) with M = Ga, In, Tl, which include the first covalent Al-In and Al-Tl bonds. For M = Ga, AlCp*-coordination induced the formation of the dication [Ga2(AlCp*)6]2+ in the solid state, which exhibits a solvent and temperature dependent monomer-dimer equilibrium in solution. By contrast, the In and Tl complexes are monomeric and prone to reduction to the metal by the electron-rich AlCp*-moieties. The QTAIM analysis suggests that the metal centres are already highly reduced in the complexes, while the positive charge is distributed onto the AlCp* units. Addition of Me3TACN (1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) to the Ga- and Tl-complex salts resulted in an isomerization to the novel low-valent Al4 + cation [(Me3TACN)Al(AlCp*)3][Al(ORF)4]. Intermittently formed tetrahedral GaAl3 + clusters could be structurally characterized. From a detailed mechanistic study of this isomerization, the very high yield and clean preparation of [(Me3TACN)Al(AlCp*)3][Al(ORF)4] was devised from [M(Me3TACN)][Al(ORF)4] (M = Ga, Tl) and [(AlCp*)4].

Structures and Energetics of E2H3+ (E = As, Sb, and Bi) Cations.

Project description:E2H2 (E = As, Sb, Bi) structures involving multiple bonds have attracted much attention recently. The E2H3+ cations (protonated E2H2) are predicted to be viable with substantial proton affinities (>180 kcal/mol). Herein, the bonding characters and energetics of a number of E2H3+ isomers are explored through CCSD(T) and DFT methods. For the As2H3+ system, the CCSD(T)/cc-pVQZ-PP method predicts that the vinylidene-like structure lies lowest in energy, with the trans and cis isomers higher by 6.7 and 9.3 kcal/mol, respectively. However, for Sb2H3+ and Bi2H3+ systems, the trans isomer is the global minimum, while the energies of the cis and vinylidene-like structures are higher, respectively, by 2.0 and 2.4 kcal/mol for Sb2H3+ and 1.6 and 15.0 kcal/mol for Bi2H3+. Thus, the vinyledene-like structure is the lowest energy for the arsenic system but only a transition state of the bismuth system. With permanent dipole moments, all minima may be observable in microwave experiments. Besides, we have also obtained transition states and planar-cis structures with higher energies. The current results should provide new insights into the various isomers and provide a number of predictions for future experiments.

Carbodicarbene Bismaalkene Cations: Unravelling the Complexities of Carbene versus Carbone in Heavy Pnictogen Chemistry.

Project description:We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the first examples of carbodicarbene (CDC)-stabilized bismuth complexes, which feature low-coordinate cationic bismuth centers with C=Bi multiple-bond character. Monocations [(CDC)Bi(Ph)Cl][SbF6 ] (8) and [(CDC)BiBr2 (THF)2 ][SbF6 ] (11), dications [(CDC)Bi(Ph)][SbF6 ]2 (9) and [(CDC)BiBr(THF)3 ][NTf2 ]2 (12), and trication [(CDC)2 Bi][NTf2 ]3 (13) have been synthesized via sequential halide abstractions from (CDC)Bi(Ph)Cl2 (7) and (CDC)BiBr3 (10). Notably, the dications and trication exhibit C ⇉ Bi double dative bonds and thus represent unprecedented bismaalkene cations. The synthesis of these species highlights a unique non-reductive route to C-Bi π-bonding character. The CDC-[Bi] complexes (7-13) were compared with related NHC-[Bi] complexes (1, 3-6) and show substantially different structural properties. Indeed, the CDC ligand has a remarkable influence on the overall stability of the resulting low-coordinate Bi complexes, suggesting that CDC is a superior ligand to NHC in heavy pnictogen chemistry.

Composition-tuned MAPbBr3 nanoparticles with addition of Cs+ cations for improved photoluminescence.

Project description:Hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanoparticles are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications. This investigation describes the structural and optical properties of MA x Cs1-x PbBr3 mixed cation colloidal nanoparticles spanning the complete compositional range of Cs substitution. A monotonic progression in the cubic lattice parameter (a) with changes in the Cs+ content confirmed the formation of mixed cation materials. More importantly, time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) revealed the optimized 13 mol% Cs nanoparticle composition exhibits the longest charge carrier lifetime and enhancement in radiative pathways. This sample also showed the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of ∼88% and displays ∼100% improvement in the PLQY of pure MAPbBr3 and CsPbBr3. Prototype LEDs fabricated from MA0.87Cs0.13PbBr3 were demonstrated.
