Shrink wrapping redox-active crystals of polyoxometalate open frameworks with organic polymers via crystal induced polymerisation.

ABSTRACT: We report examples of crystal surface modification of polyoxometalate open frameworks whereby the use of pyrrole or aniline as monomers leads to the formation of the corresponding polymers via an oxidative polymerization process initiated by the redox active POM scaffolds. Guest-exchange experiments demonstrate that the polymers can finely tune the guest exchange rate and their structural integrity is retained after the surface modifications. In addition, the formation of polyoxometalate-based self-fabricating tubes by the dissolution of Keggin-based network crystals were also modulated by the polymers, allowing a new type of hybrid inorganic polymer with an organic coating to be fabricated.

CFB box wrapping: a new shrink wrapping technology for extension of storage life of colour capsicum (cv. Bachata).

Project description:Capsicums lose water very rapidly after harvest and the moisture loss causes severe shriveling making them unmarketable within 2-3 days. The moisture loss occurs even under low temperature conditions, though at lesser rates. Bell peppers packed in corrugated fiber board boxes (CFB) tend to lose moisture continuously as these boxes are permeable to both water vapour and respiratory gases even if they are non-ventilated. To reduce the moisture loss and maintain freshness, yellow colour capsicum (cv. Bachata) were packed in CFB boxes and over wrapped with different semi-permeable films using shrink wrapping technology. This box shrink wrapping significantly lowered the weight loss and maintained firmness of capsicum at ambient (25.7-33.2 °C and 25-63% RH) and low temperature (8 °C ± 0.5 and 80 ± 5% RH) conditions. Yellow colour capsicums packed in this way could be stored for 11 days at ambient temperature with a weight loss of < 6% as compared to about 20% weight loss in non-wrapped fruits. The storage life could be extended to 5 weeks by storing these shrink wrapped boxes at 8 °C without any shriveling and with a weight loss of < 5%. In addition to maintaining high humidity, the lower O2 and higher CO2 levels maintained surrounding the produce in the wrapped boxes helped to avoid shriveling and to retain the quality in terms of surface colour, firmness and other quality traits. The absorption of excessive relative humidity by CFB itself in the over wrapped boxes helped in avoiding condensation of water droplets. This in turn avoided the development of fungal growth and thus the risk of fruit decay.

Shrink Wrapping Cells in a Defined Extracellular Matrix to Modulate the Chemo-Mechanical Microenvironment.

Project description:Cell-matrix interactions are important for the physical integration of cells into tissues and the function of insoluble, mechanosensitive signaling networks. Studying these interactions in vitro can be difficult because the extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins that adsorb to in vitro cell culture surfaces do not fully recapitulate the ECM-dense basement membranes to which cells such as cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells adhere to in vivo. Towards addressing this limitation, we have developed a surface-initiated assembly process to engineer ECM proteins into nanostructured, microscale sheets that can be shrink wrapped around single cells and small cell ensembles to provide a functional and instructive matrix niche. Unlike current cell encapsulation technology using alginate, fibrin or other hydrogels, our engineered ECM is similar in density and thickness to native basal lamina and can be tailored in structure and composition using the proteins fibronectin, laminin, fibrinogen, and/or collagen type IV. A range of cells including C2C12 myoblasts, bovine corneal endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes survive the shrink wrapping process with high viability. Further, we demonstrate that, compared to non-encapsulated controls, the engineered ECM modulates cytoskeletal structure, stability of cell-matrix adhesions and cell behavior in 2D and 3D microenvironments.

Thermoresponsive and Reducible Hyperbranched Polymers Synthesized by RAFT Polymerisation.

Project description:Here, we report the synthesis of new thermoresponsive hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) via one-pot reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerisation of poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA, Mn = 475 g/mol), poly(propylene glycol)methacrylate (PPGMA, Mn = 375 g/mol), and disulfide diacrylate (DSDA) using 2-cyanoprop-2-yl dithiobenzoate as a RAFT agent. DSDA was used as the branching agent and to afford the HBPs with reducible disulfide groups. The resulting HBPs were characterised by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) of these copolymers, which are in the range of 17⁻57 °C. Moreover, the studies on the reducibility of HBPs and swelling behaviours of hydrogels synthesized from these HBPs were conducted. The results demonstrated that we have successfully synthesized hyperbranched polymers with desired dual responsive (thermal and reducible) and crosslinkable (via thiol-ene click chemistry) properties. In addition, these new HBPs carry the multiplicity of reactive functionalities, such as RAFT agent moieties and multivinyl functional groups, which can afford them with the capacity for further bioconjugation and structure modifications.

Redox-Active Hybrid Polyoxometalate-Stabilised Gold Nanoparticles.

Project description:We report the design and preparation of multifunctional hybrid nanomaterials through the stabilization of gold nanoparticles with thiol-functionalised hybrid organic-inorganic polyoxometalates (POMs). The covalent attachment of the hybrid POM forms new nanocomposites that are stable at temperatures and pH values which destroy analogous electrostatically functionalised nanocomposites. Photoelectrochemical analysis revealed the unique photochemical and redox properties of these systems.

Polyoxometalate-encapsulated metal-organic frameworks for photocatalytic uranium isolation.

Project description:Recycling uranium (U) via adsorption and controlled conversion is crucial for the sustainable development of nuclear energy, in which photocatalytic reduction of U(vi) from aqueous solutions is considered one of the most effective strategies. The primary challenge in the photocatalytic elimination of U(vi) resides in the demand for photocatalysts with exceptional properties for effective U(vi) adsorption and charge separation. Herein, we developed the hybrids of polyoxometalate@Cu-metal-organic frameworks (POM@Cu-MOFs) through a self-assembly strategy and demonstrated the efficient removal of U(vi) via synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis. The abundant oxygen-rich groups in POM served as the adsorption sites, endowing POM@Cu-MOFs with a remarkable removal capacity (1987.4 mg g-1 under light irradiation) to remove 99.4% of UO2 2+. The attraction of electrons from Cu atoms within Cu-MOFs effectively accelerated the carrier dynamics due to their pronounced electronegativity. A mechanism associated with the synergetic effects of adsorption and photocatalytic reduction of U(vi) was proposed. This work provides a feasible approach for efficiently eliminating U(vi) from aqueous solutions in environmental pollution cleanup using the POM@Cu-MOF photocatalyst.

Algorithm-Driven Robotic Discovery of Polyoxometalate-Scaffolding Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:The experimental exploration of the chemical space of crystalline materials, especially metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), requires multiparameter control of a large set of reactions, which is unavoidably time-consuming and labor-intensive when performed manually. To accelerate the rate of material discovery while maintaining high reproducibility, we developed a machine learning algorithm integrated with a robotic synthesis platform for closed-loop exploration of the chemical space for polyoxometalate-scaffolding metal-organic frameworks (POMOFs). The eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model was optimized by using updating data obtained from the uncertainty feedback experiments and a multiclass classification extension based on the POMOF classification from their chemical constitution. The digital signatures for the robotic synthesis of POMOFs were represented by the universal chemical description language (χDL) to precisely record the synthetic steps and enhance the reproducibility. Nine novel POMOFs including one with mixed ligands derived from individual ligands through the imidization reaction of POM amine derivatives with various aldehydes have been discovered with a good repeatability. In addition, chemical space maps were plotted based on the XGBoost models whose F1 scores are above 0.8. Furthermore, the electrochemical properties of the synthesized POMOFs indicate superior electron transfer compared to the molecular POMs and the direct effect of the ratio of Zn, the type of ligands used, and the topology structures in POMOFs for modulating electron transfer abilities.

High Proton-Conductivity in Covalently Linked Polyoxometalate-Organoboronic Acid-Polymers.

Project description:The controlled bottom-up design of polymers with metal oxide backbones is a grand challenge in materials design, as it could give unique control over the resulting chemical properties. Herein, we report a 1D-organo-functionalized polyoxometalate polymer featuring a purely inorganic backbone. The polymer is self-assembled from two types of monomers, inorganic Wells-Dawson-type polyoxometalates, and aromatic organo-boronates. Their covalent linkage results in 1D polymer strands, which combine an inorganic oxide backbone (based on B-O and Nb-O linkages) with functional organic side-chains. The polymer shows high bulk proton conductivity of up to 1.59×10-1 S cm-1 at 90 °C and 98 % relative humidity. This synthetic approach could lead to a new class of organic-inorganic polymers where function can be designed by controlled tuning of the monomer units.

Dimensional Control in Polyoxometalate Crystals Hybridized with Amphiphilic Polymerizable Ionic Liquids.

Project description:Ionic liquids are an important component for constructing functional materials, and polyxometalate cluster anion is a promising partner for building inorganic-organic hybrid materials comprising ionic liquids. In such hybrid materials, the precise control of the molecular arrangement in the bulk structures is crucial for the emergence of characteristic functions, which can be realized by introducing an amphiphilic moiety into the ionic liquids. Here, an amphiphilic polymerizable imidazolium ionic liquid with a methacryloyl group was firstly hybridized with polyoxometalate anions of octamolybdate ([Mo8O26]4-, Mo8) and silicotungstate ([SiW12O40]4-, SiW12) to obtain inorganic-organic hybrid crystals. The polymerizable ionic liquid with a octyl chain (denoted as MAImC8) resulted in the formation of anisotropic molecular arrangements in the bulk crystal structure, which was compared with the hybrid crystals composed from the polymerizable ionic liquid without a long alkyl chain (denoted as MAIm). Rather densely packed isotropic molecular arrangements were observed in the hybrid crystals of MAIm-Mo8 and MAIm-SiW12 due to the lack of the amphiphilic moiety. On the other hand, using the amphiphilic MAImC8 cation gave rise to a honeycomb-like structure with the Mo8 anion and a layered structure with the SiW12 anion, respectively.
