Variations of Major Product Derived from Conversion of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural over a Modified MOFs-Derived Carbon Material in Response to Reaction Conditions.

ABSTRACT: In recent years, the conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) and ethyl levulinate (EL) has become an attractive biomass transformation route due to their potential applications in the energy and chemical industries. In this study, we have developed an effective method to prepare a catalyst for this reaction. Sulfonic-acid-functionalized carbon nanomaterials (C-SO?H), prepared from the direct pyrolysis of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) precursor Cu-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) followed by acidification with sulfuric acid, show excellent catalytic activity with a total yield higher than 90%. It is interesting that, different from the previous catalysts, a different major product—EMF or EL—can be selectively obtained by controlling the reaction temperature and time.

Iron-Modified Acid Carbons for the Conversion of Fructose to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural under Microwave Heating.

Project description:Carbons with Brønsted acidic sites and iron oxide modifications were prepared through hydrothermal carbonization and glycerol pyrolysis in the presence of sulfuric acid, magnetite, and iron(III) nitrate. The solids were tested as catalysts in converting fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). Characterization techniques revealed a uniform presence of 4.89 mmol g-1 total acidic groups, including up to 1.87 mmol g-1 sulfonic and carboxylic groups. Combined with a reduced surface area, the Brønsted and Lewis acidity enabled the conversion of 94% of fructose with selectivity values as high as 95% for 5-HMF in just 10 min at 140 °C, using microwave heating and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the solvent. This performance was attributed to the selective heating of the catalyst surface by the microwave absorption capacity of the acidic groups and iron oxide, leading to the formation of "hot spots." The catalyst obtained by hydrothermal carbonization in the presence of Fe3O4, HCC-20% Fe3O4, demonstrated stability when reused for up to four consecutive cycles. A slight reduction in conversion and selectivity was observed after the first use, attributed to the presence of acid species not incorporated into the solid during the synthesis process.

Toward scalable biocatalytic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by galactose oxidase using coordinated reaction and enzyme engineering.

Project description:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has emerged as a crucial bio-based chemical building block in the drive towards developing materials from renewable resources, due to its direct preparation from sugars and its readily diversifiable scaffold. A key obstacle in transitioning to bio-based plastic production lies in meeting the necessary industrial production efficiency, particularly in the cost-effective conversion of HMF to valuable intermediates. Toward addressing the challenge of developing scalable technology for oxidizing crude HMF to more valuable chemicals, here we report coordinated reaction and enzyme engineering to provide a galactose oxidase (GOase) variant with remarkably high activity toward HMF, improved O2 binding and excellent productivity (>1,000,000 TTN). The biocatalyst and reaction conditions presented here for GOase catalysed selective oxidation of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran offers a productive blueprint for further development, giving hope for the creation of a biocatalytic route to scalable production of furan-based chemical building blocks from sustainable feedstocks.

High Conversion of Concentrated Sugars to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural over a Metal-free Carbon Catalyst: Role of Glucose-Fructose Dimers.

Project description:To reduce the production cost of chemicals from renewable resources, the feedstock loading must be high and the catalyst must be of low cost and efficient. In this study, at a very short reaction time of 10 min at 125 °C, concentrated sugar solutions (20 wt %, 101 wt % on solvent) were converted to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) over a cotton gin trash (CGT)-derived sulfonated carbon catalyst in a 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MeTHF) biphasic system. We report, for the first time, that the presence of glucose either as a covalently bonded monomer in sucrose or in a mixture with fructose achieved yields of HMF up to 62 mol % compared to a value of only 39 mol % obtained with fructose on its own. In the concentrated reaction medium, glucose, fructose, and sucrose molecules produce difructose anhydrides, dimers/reversion products, and sucrose isomers. The glucose-fructose dimers formed in sucrose and glucose/fructose reaction systems play a critical role in the transformation of the sugars to a higher-than-expected HMF yield. Thus, a strategy of using cellulosic glucose, where it is partially converted to fructose content and the high sugar concentration sugar mixture is then converted to HMF, should be exploited for future biorefineries.

Hydrogenation versus hydrogenolysis during alkaline electrochemical valorization of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural over oxide-derived Cu-bimetallics.

Project description:The electrochemical conversion of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural, especially its reduction, is an attractive green production pathway for carbonaceous e-chemicals. We demonstrate the reduction of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 5-Methylfurfurylalcohol under strongly alkaline reaction environments over oxide-derived Cu bimetallic electrocatalysts. We investigate whether and how the surface catalysis of the MOx phases tune the catalytic selectivity of oxide-derived Cu with respect to the 2-electron hydrogenation to 2.5-Bishydroxymethylfuran and the (2 + 2)-electron hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis to 5-Methylfurfurylalcohol. We provide evidence for a kinetic competition between the evolution of H2 and the 2-electron hydrogenolysis of 2.5-Bishydroxymethylfuran to 5-Methylfurfurylalcohol and discuss its mechanistic implications. Finally, we demonstrate that the ability to conduct 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural reduction to 5-Methylfurfurylalcohol in alkaline conditions over oxide-derived Cu/MOx Cu foam electrodes enable an efficiently operating alkaline exchange membranes electrolyzer, in which the cathodic 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural valorization is coupled to either alkaline oxygen evolution anode or to oxidative 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural valorization.

Selective Conversion of Glycerol to Methanol over CaO-Modified HZSM-5 Zeolite.

Project description:Biodiesel is generally produced from vegetable oils and methanol, which also generates glycerol as byproduct. To improve the overall economic performance of the process, the selective formation of methanol from glycerol is important in biodiesel production. In the present study, a CaO modified HZSM-5 zeolite was prepared by an impregnation method and used for the conversion of glycerol to methanol. We found that the 10%CaO/HZSM-5 with Si/Al ratio of 38 exhibited highest selectivity to methanol of 70%, with a glycerol conversion of 100% under 340 ℃ and atmospheric pressure. The characterization results showed that the introduction of a small amount of CaO into the HZSM-5 did not affect the structure of zeolite. The incorporation of HZSM-5 as an acidic catalyst and CaO as a basic catalyst in a synergistic catalysis system led to higher conversion of glycerol and selectivity of methanol.

Heteroatoms ternary-doped porous carbons derived from MOFs as metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:The nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S) ternary-doped metal-free porous carbon materials have been successfully synthesized using MOFs as templates (denoted as NPS-C-MOF-5) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for the first time. The influences of porous carbons from carbonizing different MOFs and carbonization temperature on ORR have been systematically investigated. Due to the synergistic effect of N, P and S ternary-doping, the NPS-C-MOF-5 catalyst shows a higher onset potential as a metal-free electrocatalyst for ORR among the currently reported metal-free electrocatalysts, very close to the commercial Pt-C catalyst. In particular, the kinetic limiting current density of NPS-C-MOF-5 catalyst at -0.6 V is up to approximate -11.6 mA cm(-2), which is 1.2 times higher than that of the commercial Pt-C catalyst. Furthermore, the outstanding methanol tolerance and excellent long-term stability of NPS-C-MOF-5 are superior to those of the commercial Pt-C catalyst for ORR in alkaline media.

Dehydration of fructose, sucrose and inulin to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural over yeast-derived carbonaceous microspheres at low temperatures.

Project description:This work prepared carbonaceous microspheres by hydrothermal carbonization of yeast cells followed by sulfonation with concentrated sulphuric acid (98%) at room temperature. The obtained carbonaceous product (CM-SO3H) had a high acid density (1.80 mmol g-1). We evaluated CM-SO3H as a solid catalyst for the dehydration of fructose-based carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM][Cl]). The effects of the catalyst and substrate loadings as well as the reaction temperature and time on the yield of 5-HMF were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, a 5-HMF yield of up to 83.5% was obtained from fructose with a reaction temperature of 80 °C for 30 min. Furthermore, 44.8% and 59.2% 5-HMF yields were obtained from sucrose (80 °C for 30 min) and inulin (80 °C for 60 min), respectively. CM-SO3H and [BMIM][Cl] showed high stability and could be recycled between five and eight times without significant loss of catalytic activity. More importantly, the catalytic system could be applied to high substrate concentrations. CM-SO3H combined with [BMIM][Cl] is a promising system for transforming fructose-based carbohydrates into 5-HMF.

Bioethanol Conversion into Propylene over Various Zeolite Catalysts: Reaction Optimization and Catalyst Deactivation.

Project description:Catalytic conversions of bioethanol to propylene were investigated over different zeolite catalysts. H-ZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3 = 80) was found to be the most effective for propylene production. Furthermore, H-ZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3 = 80) was investigated under different variables of catalytic reaction (calcination temperature, feed composition, reaction temperature, and time on stream) for the conversion of ethanol to propylene. The H-ZSM-5(80) catalysts calcined at 600 °C showed the highest propylene yield. The moderate acidic site on ZSM-5 is required for the production of propylene. The activity on ZSM-5 is independent of the ethanol feed composition. H-ZSM-5 catalyst deactivation was observed, owing to dealumination. The highest propylene yield was 23.4% obtained over HZSM-5(80). Propylene, butene, and ≥C5 olefins were formed by parallel reaction from ethylene. Olefins were converted to each paraffin by sequential hydrogenation reaction. HZSM-5(80) catalyst is a promising catalyst not only for ethanol but also for the conversion of bioethanol to light olefins.

MOF Material-Derived Bimetallic Sulfide Co<sub>x</sub>Ni<sub>y</sub>S for Electrocatalytic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural.

Project description:The electrocatalytic conversion of biomass into high-value-added chemicals is one of the effective methods of green chemistry. Conventional metal catalysts have disadvantages, such as low atomic utilization and small surface areas. Catalyst materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention due to their unique physicochemical properties. Here, an MOF-derived non-precious metal CoxNiyS electrocatalyst was applied to the oxidation of biomass-derivative 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The HMF oxidation reaction activities were modulated by regulating the content of Co and Ni bimetals, showing a volcano curve with an increasing proportion of Co. When the Co:Ni ratio was 2:1, the HMF conversion rate reached 84.5%, and the yield of the main product, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), was 54%. The XPS results showed that the presence of high-valent nickel species after electrolysis, which further proved the existence and reactivity of NiOOH, as well as the synergistic effect of Co and Ni promoted the conversion of HMF. Increasing the content of Ni could increase the activity of HMF electrochemical oxidation, and increasing the content of Co could reduce the increase in the anodic current. This study has important significance for designing better HMF electrochemical catalysts in the future.

MOFs-Derived Nano-CuO Modified Electrode as a Sensor for Determination of Hydrazine Hydrate in Aqueous Medium.

Project description:It very important to be able to efficiently detect hydrazine hydrate in an aqueous medium due to its high toxicity. Here, we have proposed a new idea: to construct a sensor for the rapid determination of hydrazine hydrate based on the nano-CuO derived by controlled pyrolysis of HKUST-1 [Cu3(BTC)2(H2O)3]. The as-prepared CuO at 400 °C possesses a uniform appearance with nano-structure via SEM images, and the nano-CuO-400 has exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards hydrazine oxidation. Amperometric i-t curves shows the peak current as linearly proportional to the hydrazine concentration within 1.98-169.3 μmol L-1 and 232-2096 μmol L-1 with the detection limit of 2.55 × 10-8 mol L-1 and 7.01 × 10-8 mol L-1, respectively. Moreover, the sensor constructed in the experiment shows good selectivities, and it is feasible to determining actual water samples.
