Molecular catalyst systems as key enablers for tailored polyesters and polycarbonate recycling concepts.

ABSTRACT: A transition metal catalyst system for the selective catalytic depolymerization of various polyester- and polycarbonate-based materials is presented. The use of a molecular ruthenium catalyst with selected triphos ligands enabled a selective hydrogenolysis of a large diversity of polymeric consumer products, paving the way to innovative and sustainable recycling strategies within a circular economy.

A Simple, Selective, and General Catalyst for Ring Closing Depolymerization of Polyesters and Polycarbonates for Chemical Recycling.

Project description:The ability to efficiently and selectively process mixed polymer waste is important to address the growing plastic waste problem. Herein, we report that the combination of ZnCl2 and an additive amount of poly(ethylene glycol) under vacuum can readily and selectively depolymerize polyesters and polycarbonates with high ceiling temperatures (Tc >200 °C) back to their constitute monomers. Mechanistic experiments implicate a random chain scission mechanism and a catalyst structure containing one equivalent of ZnCl2 per ethylene glycol repeat unit in the poly(ethylene glycol). In addition to being general for a wide variety of polyesters and polycarbonates, the catalyst system could selectively depolymerize a polyester in the presence of other commodity plastics, demonstrating how reactive distillation using the ZnCl2 /PEG600 catalyst system can be used to separate mixed plastic waste.

Versatile Chemical Recycling Strategies: Value-Added Chemicals from Polyester and Polycarbonate Waste.

Project description:ZnII -complexes bearing half-salan ligands were exploited in the mild and selective chemical upcycling of various commercial polyesters and polycarbonates. Remarkably, we report the first example of discrete metal-mediated poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (BPA-PC) methanolysis being appreciably active at room temperature. Indeed, Zn(2)2 and Zn(2)Et achieved complete BPA-PC consumption within 12-18 mins in 2-Me-THF, noting high bisphenol A (BPA) yields (SBPA =85-91 %) within 2-4 h. Further kinetic analysis found such catalysts to possess kapp values of 0.28±0.040 and 0.47±0.049 min-1 respectively at 4 wt%, the highest reported to date. A completely circular upcycling approach to plastic waste was demonstrated through the production of several renewable poly(ester-amide)s (PEAs), based on a terephthalamide monomer derived from bottle-grade poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), which exhibited excellent thermal properties.

High-Performance Organic Aerogels Tailored for Versatile Recycling Approaches: Recycling-Reforming-Upcycling.

Project description:Organic aerogels are emerging as promising materials due to their versatile properties, rendering them excellent candidates for a variety of applications in the fields of thermal insulation, energy storage, pharmaceuticals, chemical adsorption, and catalysis. However, current aerogel designs rely on cross-linked polymer networks, which lack efficient end-of-use solutions, thereby hindering their overall sustainability. In this study, a facile synthesis of organic aerogels with a unique combination of imine and cyanurate moieties is presented, resulting in high-performance, lightweight insulating materials. The aerogels' structure, ensures mechanical robustness, thermal resistance, and hydrophobicity without additional treatments, crucial for long-term performance. Additionally, in response to the currently unsustainable use of cross-linked polymer materials, the molecular design offers diverse avenues of chemical recycling. These include full depolymerization back into the original monomers, partial network fragmentation producing soluble oligomers that can be promptly employed to fabricate new aerogels, and upcycling of aerogel waste into useful building blocks. This work pioneers a novel approach to material design, emphasizing recyclability as a core feature while maintaining high-performance excellence.

Tailored N-Containing Carbons as Catalyst Supports in Alcohol Oxidation.

Project description:The introduction of N-containing functionalities in carbon-based materials is brought to stable and highly active metal-supported catalysts. However, up to now, the role of the amount and the nature of N-groups have not been completely clear. This study aims to clarify these aspects by preparing tailored N-containing carbons where different N-groups are introduced during the synthesis of the carbon material. These materials were used as the support for Pd nanoparticles. Testing these catalysts in alcohol oxidations and comparing the results with those obtained using Pd nanoparticles supported on different N-containing supports allowed us to obtain insight into the role of the different N-containing groups. In the cinnamyl alcohol oxidation, pyridine-like groups seem to favor both activity and selectivity toward cinnamaldehyde.

Beyond scaling relations in electrocatalysis: unifying concepts from molecular systems and metallic surfaces.

Project description:Transitioning the chemical industry away from fossil fuels is a critical goal that requires the adoption of alternative, non-fossil carbon feedstocks. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction, driven via renewable-derived electricity, represents an unparalleled technology that uses CO2 as a C1-building block to generate industrially relevant products. Although many electrocatalytic systems have demonstrated promising activities in producing a wide range of products, challenges remain in controlling the product selectivity and reducing the operating overpotential for large-scale applications. This Perspective outlines recent efforts in designing tailored microenvironments in electrocatalytic systems to boost their selectivity and energy efficiency. We review examples from homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, emphasizing mechanistic studies that elucidate how the modulation of the space surrounding catalytic active sites can control the outcome of electrocatalysis. Lastly, we carry out a thermodynamic-kinetic analysis to identify existing scaling relationships that govern the electrocatalytic performance of molecular catalysts, and we highlight examples of catalysts that circumvent these relations through the functionalization of their secondary coordination sphere.

Catalyst free PET and PEF polyesters using a new traceless oxalate chain extender.

Project description:Plastic material performance is strongly correlated to the polymer's molecular weight. Obtaining a sufficiently high molecular weight is therefore a key goal of polymerization processes. The most important polyester polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and the new polyethylene furanoate (PEF) require metal catalysts and time-consuming production processes to reach sufficiently high molecular weights. Metal catalysts, which are typically antimony or tin for polyesters, end up in the plastic products which may result in sustainability and ecological challenges. When the less reactive comonomer isosorbide is introduced to produce (partly) biobased materials with enhanced thermal properties, such as polyethylene-co-isosorbide furanoate (PEIF), reaching high enough molecular weight becomes even more challenging. This study presents an easily implementable approach to produce high molecular weight PET and PEF polyesters and their isosorbide copolyesters PEIT and PEIF by coupling lower molecular weight polymer chains by the reactive diguaiacyl oxalate (DGO) chain extender. DGO is so reactive, that the use of metal catalysts can be completely avoided and it helps avoiding an extra solid-state polymerization step. In addition, DGO distinguishes itself from typical chain extenders by its ability to be completely removed from the resulting polymer, thereby avoiding the inherent drawbacks associated with typical chain extenders.

Enhancement in Rate of Photocatalysis Upon Catalyst Recycling.

Project description:Recyclability is an important aspect for heterogeneous photo-catalysts. Ease of recovery and stability of the photo-catalyst in terms of efficiency over the number of cycles are highly desired and in fact it is ideal if the efficiency is constant and it should not decrease marginally with each cycle. Presented here is a seminal observation in which the photocatalytic activity is shown to improve with increasing number of catalytic cycles (it is 1.7 times better after the 1st cycle and 3.1 times better after the 2nd cycle). Specifically, nanorods of pure TiO2 and TiO2 doped with controlled amount of tungsten have been used to degrade two model pollutants: Phenol and Rhodamine B under exclusive visible light illumination. It was found that, in case of 1 mol.% W incorporation, rate of photocatalysis and also the range of visible light absorption of the photocatalyst increased after the photocatalysis as compared to before photocatalysis. This aspect is unique for doped TiO2 and hence provides an intriguing way to mitigate low photoactivity.

Towards applying the essential public health functions for building health systems resilience: A renewed list and key enablers for operationalization.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change-related events, protracted conflicts, economic stressors and other health challenges, call for strong public health orientation and leadership in health system strengthening and policies. Applying the essential public health functions (EPHFs) represents a holistic operational approach to public health, which is considered to be an integrated, sustainable, and cost-effective means for supporting universal health coverage, health security and improved population health and wellbeing. As a core component of the Primary Health Care (PHC) Operational Framework, EPHFs also support the continuum of health services from health promotion and protection, disease prevention to treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative services. Comprehensive delivery of EPHFs through PHC-oriented health systems with multisectoral participation is therefore vital to meet population health needs, tackle public health threats and build resilience. In this perspective, we present a renewed EPHF list consisting of twelve functions as a reference to foster country-level operationalisation, based on available authoritative lists and global practices. EPHFs are presented as a conceptual bridge between prevailing siloed efforts in health systems and allied sectors. We also highlight key enablers to support effective implementation of EPHFs, including high-level political commitment, clear national structures for institutional stewardship on EPHFs, multisectoral accountability and systematic assessment. As countries seek to transform health systems in the context of recovery from COVID-19 and other public health emergencies, the renewed EPHF list and enablers can inform public health reform, PHC strengthening, and more integrated recovery efforts to build resilient health systems capable of managing complex health challenges for all people.

Catalyst-controlled polycondensation of glycerol with diacyl chlorides: linear polyesters from a trifunctional monomer.

Project description:Diarylborinic acids catalyze the formation of linear polyesters from glycerol, a trifunctional, carbohydrate-based monomer. The selective activation of 1,2-diols over isolated alcohols by the organoboron catalyst results in polymers that are essentially free of branching or cross-linking and possess a high fraction of 1,3-enchained glycerol units, as assessed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The ability to generate well-defined polyester architectures from glycerol is significant in light of the numerous applications of such macromolecules, particularly in the biomedical area. Isomerization, post-polymerization functionalization and controlled cross-linking reactions of the obtained linear poly(glycerol esters) are demonstrated.
