Description of immature stages and biological notes of Cassidisparelicta Medvedev, 1957, a newly recorded species from China (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae, Hispini).

ABSTRACT: The first instar and mature larva and pupa of Cassidisparelicta Medvedev, 1957, a newly recorded species from China, are described and figured. The chaetotaxy of the head, mouthparts, legs, and dorsal and ventral surfaces of the body is described. This is the first detailed description of immatures in the genus Cassidispa. Diagnostic characters of this species are compared with other described immatures of some Hispini genera. Biological notes on C.relicta, such as host plants, feeding patterns of adults, structure of larval mines and life history, are also presented.

Host relationships and biological notes of Cassidinae beetles (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) in Qiannan Prefecture, Guizhou, China.

Project description:The faunal composition, host relationships and biological information of the subfamily Cassidinae (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) remain poorly known in many Chinese regions. Based on the seven-year field survey, faunal composition and host associations of Cassidinae beetles were systematically compiled for Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province. In particular, through direct field observations, detailed biological information, such as life history and behavioural features and host plants were first recorded for 56 species of Cassidinae beetles. We have tripled the number of Cassidinae species in Qiannan. Sixty-nine species of Cassidinae beetles belonging to 17 genera and eight tribes were identified, of which 38 species are newly recorded in Guizhou and 56 are newly recorded in Qiannan. The tribes Leptispini and Notosacanthini were newly recorded in Guizhou. The genera Thlaspidosoma Spaeth, Downesia Baly, Klitispa Uhmann, Platypria Guérin-Méneville, Leptispa Baly and Notosacantha Chevrolat were recorded in Guizhou for the first time. A total of 61 species, 37 genera and 17 families of host plants were collected. Lardizabalaceae and Araliaceae were new host plant families for Cassidinae worldwide. Quantitative food web analysis indicated that Cassidinae species in Qiannan mainly feed on Poaceae, Rosaceae, Convolvulaceae and Lamiaceae. Callispini and Leptispini only feed on monocots, Aspidimorphini, Basiprionotini, Cassidini and Notosacanthini only feed on dicots, while Hispini feed on both monocots and dicots. The feeding patterns and corresponding damage marks of Cassidinae were quite diverse. In addition, the pupal mine-making behaviour of Dactylispaexcisa (Kraatz, 1879), D.similis Chen et T'an, 1985 and D.uhmanni Gressitt, 1950 are worth further study. Although preliminary, our field survey is an essential step in understanding Cassidinae behaviour and Cassidinae-plant interactions.

Description of the immature stages of Larinus vulpes and notes on its biology (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Lixinae).

Project description:Mature larva and pupa of Larinus vulpes (Olivier, 1807) (Curculionidae: Lixinae: Lixini) are morphologically described for the first time and compared with known larvae and pupae of other Larinus species. Very high counts of larval body setae (pronotum with more than 25 setae and postdorsum on meso- and metathorax and also on abdominal segments I-VII with more than 12 setae) are characteristic features of the nominotypical subgenus Larinus. The biology of the species was studied in Ukraine. Echinops ruthenicus and E. sphaerocephalus were identified as host plants of both larvae and adults of this weevil based on the present research in Ukraine, which shows probably oligophagous. Overwintering beetles emerged at the end of May or earlier, then feeding and mating on the host plants. The highest level of adult activity was observed at the end of June. Larvae were endophagous within the flower heads. In July and August, the larvae pupated within inflorescences in a pupation cell. Adults exited the cells at the end of August and did not hibernate on the host plants. Sometimes, larvae and imagines of a new generation were found outside the flower heads in chambers constructed on the stems.

Project description:A new subgenus and species, Charidotella (Chapadacassis subgen. n.) paradoxasp. n. is described and figured from the Chapada plateau in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Subgenera of Charidotella Weise, 1896 are listed, supplemented with basic data, diagnostic table, and a key is proposed. Based on a study of respective type material following new combinations are proposed: Charidotella (Philaspis) stulta (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) amoenula (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) cyclographa (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) discoidalis (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) incerta (Boheman, 1855), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) purpurea (Linnaeus, 1758), comb. n., Charidotella (Xenocassis) myops (Boheman, 1855), comb. n. (all previously placed in the nominotypical subgenus), and Plagiometrionacingulata (Boheman, 1862), comb. n. (from Charidotella (Xenocassis)).

The complete mitochondrial genome of Downesia tarsata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae).

Project description:Downesia species are leaf-mining beetles mainly feed on Poaceae plants in the tropical and subtropical areas in Asia. In this study, we firstly sequenced and reported the complete mitochondrial genome for the genus. The complete mitogenome of Downesia tarsata is 18,557 bp in length, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCG), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA), two ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and one AT-rich region. Phylogenomic analysis indicated that D. tarsata is closely related to Agonita chinensis, and the two species belong to the same tribe of Gonophorini. The complete mitochondrial genome of D. tarsata could help clarify the phylogenetic relationship among Cassidinae species.

On newly and recently recorded species of the genus Lema Fabricius (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Criocerinae) from Taiwan.

Project description:New records of four species (Lema lacertosa Lacordaire, 1845, Lema diversipes Pic, 1921, Lema cyanella (Linnaeus, 1758), Lema trivittata trivittata Say, 1824 and additional information on one recently recorded species (Lema solani Fabricius, 1798) are reported for Taiwan. Lema diversipes Pic, 1921 is removed from synonymy with Lema lacertosa Lacordaire, 1845; both species are redescribed. A lectotype is designated for Lema phungi Pic, 1924. The synonymies of Lema phungi Pic, 1924 and Lema jeanvoinei Pic, 1932 with Lema lacertosa Lacordaire, 1845 are supported. A revised key to the known species in Taiwan is provided.

Mitochondrial genome of Taiwania circumdata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae) and phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:In this study we sequenced and annotated the nearly complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Taiwania circumdata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae), an important insect pest on sweetpotato and water spinach in Southern China. This mitogenome was 13,546 bp long and encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 19 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs) and 2 ribosomal RNA unit genes. The T. circumdata mitogenome with an A + T content of 77.9% presented a positive AT-skew (0.126) and a negative GC-skew (-0.160). Eleven PCGs started with a typical ATN codon, whereas the remaining two PCGs used TTG (nad1) and AAT (cox1) as the initial codon. All the 19 tRNAs had a typical secondary cloverleaf structure, except for trnS1 (AGN) which lacked the dihydrouridine arm. Phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of 13 PCGs recovered a phylogeny of Bruchinae+ ((Galerucinae + Chrysomelinae) + (Criocerinae + Cassidinae)). In Cassidinae, T. circumdata and Laccoptera ruginosa formed a clade, which was sister to three Cassida species.

Complete mitochondrial genome of coconut hispine beetle Brontispa longissima (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae).

Project description:In the present study, we determined complete mitogenome of Brontispa longissima, the first for the tribe Cryptonychini. This mitochondrial genome contains 15,696 bp, with an A+T content of 72.2% (GenBank accession no. MN052901). All of the 22 tRNA genes displayed a typical clover-leaf structure, with the exception of tRNASer (TCT). 12 PCGs were initiated by ATN codons, and ND1 started with TTG. Eight PCGs used the typical stop codon 'TAA' and 'TGA', while five PCGs terminated with incomplete stop codons "T". Phylogenetic analyses performed using the mitogenomes for the B. longissima and other seven species from subfamily Cassidinae.

Mitochondrial genome of a leaf-mining beetle Prionispa champaka Maulik (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae).

Project description:Prionispa champaka is a leaf-mining species which feeds on Pollia spp. and widely distributes in southern China. The complete mitogenomic sequence of P. champaka (Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae) was obtained and annotated, with a length of 20,494 bp. It was longer than those of other Chrysomelid species (not including Bruchinae) because of its much longer non-coding sequences. Gene arrangement and content of P. champaka was identical to the most common type in insects, and it was also biased toward AT (accounting for 78.4%). Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial PCGs indicated that P. champaka was closely clustered with 5 other Cassidinae species, supporting the traditional morphological classification within Cassidinae.

Field survey of Cassidinae beetles (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) and their host plants in southern Guangxi, China.

Project description:Few systematic studies have been conducted on the faunal composition and food web structure of Cassidinae of China. During 2013-2019, we systematically investigated Cassidinae beetles and their host plants in the southern Guangxi. A total of 2,255 Cassidinae individuals from 66 species, 23 genera and ten tribes were collected in southern Guangxi. Most species belonged to the tribe Hispini (23 species, 34.8%), followed by the tribe Gonophorini (13 species, 19.7%), Cassidini (eight species, 12.1%) and Aspidimorphini (six species, 9.1%). The others (16 species) belonged to the tribes Anisoderini, Botryonopini, Callispini, Oncocephalini, Notosacanthini and Leptispini. The tribe Notosacanthini was recorded from Guangxi for the first time. The genera Neownesia (Botryonopini), Gonophora (Gonophorini), Micrispa (Gonophorini), Notosacantha (Notosacanthini) and Prionispa (Oncocephalini) were firstly recorded in Guangxi. In total, we obtained 47 newly-recorded species in southern Guangxi and 33 newly-recorded species in the whole Guangxi, of which, Callispafrontalis Medvedev, 1992 was newly recorded in China. Dactylispafeae Gestro (625 individuals) and D.chinensis Weise (565 individuals) were the most common species. A total of 69 species, 53 genera and 19 families of host plants were identified for Cassidinae in southern Guangxi. Many host plant associations are new records for Cassidinae. Quantitative food web analysis indicated that Cassidinae species in southern Guangxi primarily fed on Poaceae, Convolvulaceae, Cyperaceae and Rosaceae. Generally, the plant-Cassidinae food webs were moderately complex and stable in southern Guangxi. This is the first large contribution to the knowledge of the species composition and host plant diversity of Cassidinae in southern Guangxi.
