Data for global power demand and solar PV output matching.

ABSTRACT: Increasing use of solar energy necessitates better data sets for analyzing matching of solar photovoltaic output and power demand. Data source information presented in this article is useful to analyze the self-consumption rates of photovoltaic systems on global scale. The data is provided in figure format. The time resolution is basically one hour, but 1-min data is also included. The geographical range of selected sites is lat. 26-60 deg. (Europe, Asia, Latin-America). The power demand data ranges from a single household to national scale. Both measured and simulated data are included. The data sets are linked to a recent article by Lund [1].

Luminescent Solar Power-PV/Thermal Hybrid Electricity Generation for Cost-Effective Dispatchable Solar Energy.

Project description:The challenge in solar energy today is not the cost of photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation, already competing with fossil fuel prices, but rather utility-scale energy storage and flexibility in supply. Low-cost thermal energy storage (TES) exists but relies on expensive heat engines. Here, we introduce the concept of luminescent solar power (LSP), where sunlight is absorbed in a photoluminescent (PL) absorber, followed by red-shifted PL emission matched to an adjacent PV cell's band edge. This way the PV cell operates nearly as efficiently as under direct illumination but with minimal excessive heat. The PL absorber temperature rises because of thermalization, allowing it to store the excessive heat, which can later be converted into electricity. Tailored luminescent materials that support an additional 1.5 kW h PV electricity for every 1 kW h of (virtual) heat engine electricity with a dynamic shift between the two sources are experimentally demonstrated. Such an ideal hybrid system may lead to a potential reduction in the cost of electricity for a base-load solution.

A random subspace ensemble classification model for discrimination of power quality events in solar PV microgrid power network.

Project description:This study proposes SVM based Random Subspace (RS) ensemble classifier to discriminate different Power Quality Events (PQEs) in a photovoltaic (PV) connected Microgrid (MG) model. The MG model is developed and simulated with the presence of different PQEs (voltage and harmonic related signals and distinctive transients) in both on-grid and off-grid modes of MG network, respectively. In the pre-stage of classification, the features are extracted from numerous PQE signals by Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) analysis, and the extracted features are used to learn the classifiers at the final stage. In this study, first three Kernel types of SVM classifiers (Linear, Quadratic, and Cubic) are used to predict the different PQEs. Among the results that Cubic kernel SVM classifier offers higher accuracy and better performance than other kernel types (Linear and Quadradic). Further, to enhance the accuracy of SVM classifiers, a SVM based RS ensemble model is proposed and its effectiveness is verified with the results of kernel based SVM classifiers under the standard test condition (STC) and varying solar irradiance of PV in real time. From the final results, it can be concluded that the proposed method is more robust and offers superior performance with higher accuracy of classification than kernel based SVM classifiers.

Increasing the Accuracy of Hourly Multi-Output Solar Power Forecast with Physics-Informed Machine Learning.

Project description:Machine Learning (ML)-based methods have been identified as capable of providing up to one day ahead Photovoltaic (PV) power forecasts. In this research, we introduce a generic physical model of a PV system into ML predictors to forecast from one to three days ahead. The only requirement is a basic dataset including power, wind speed and air temperature measurements. Then, these are recombined into physics informed metrics able to capture the operational point of the PV. In this way, the models learn about the physical relationships of the different features, effectively easing training. In order to generalise the results, we also present a methodology evaluating this physics informed approach. We present a study-case of a PV system in Denmark to validate our claims by extensively evaluating five different ML methods: Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) and a hybrid CNN-LSTM. The results show consistently how the best predictors use the proposed physics-informed features disregarding the particular ML-method, and forecasting horizon. However, also, how there is a threshold regarding the number of previous samples to be included that appears as a convex function.

Harmonised global datasets of wind and solar farm locations and power.

Project description:Energy systems need decarbonisation in order to limit global warming to within safe limits. While global land planners are promising more of the planet's limited space to wind and solar photovoltaic, there is little information on where current infrastructure is located. The majority of recent studies use land suitability for wind and solar, coupled with technical and socioeconomic constraints, as a proxy for actual location data. Here, we address this shortcoming. Using readily accessible OpenStreetMap data we present, to our knowledge, the first global, open-access, harmonised spatial datasets of wind and solar installations. We also include user friendly code to enable users to easily create newer versions of the dataset. Finally, we include first order estimates of power capacities of installations. We anticipate these data will be of widespread interest within global studies of the future potential and trade-offs associated with the global decarbonisation of energy systems.

SOLETE, a 15-month long holistic dataset including: Meteorology, co-located wind and solar PV power from.

Project description:The aim of the SOLETE dataset is to support researchers in the meteorological, solar and wind power forecasting fields. Particularly, co-located wind and solar installations have gained relevance due to the rise of hybrid power plants and systems. The dataset has been recorded in SYSLAB, a laboratory for distributed energy resources located in Denmark. A meteorological station, an 11 kW wind turbine and a 10 kW PV array have been used to record measurements, transferred to a central server. The dataset includes 15 months of measurements from the 1st June 2018 to 1st September 2019 covering: Timestamp, air temperature, relative humidity, pressure, wind speed, wind direction, global horizontal irradiance, plane of array irradiance, and active power recorded from both the wind turbine and the PV inverter. The data was recorded at 1 Hz sampling rate and averaged over 5 min and hourly intervals. In addition, there are three Python source code files accompanying the data file. RunMe.py is a code example for importing the data. MLForecasting.py is a self-contained example on how to use the data to build physics-informed machine learning models for solar PV power forecasting. Functions.py contains utility functions used by the other two.

The data set consists of households, persons and their daily activity chains. It can be used in transport simulation, energy analysis and other research fields such as epidemiology. This data-in-brief article describes in detail the generated data set and how it can be regenerated based on publicly available and open data. The characteristics and pre-processing steps for the input data sets are covered in detail.

DOSE - Global data set of reported sub-national economic output.

Project description:Many phenomena of high relevance for economic development such as human capital, geography and climate vary considerably within countries as well as between them. Yet, global data sets of economic output are typically available at the national level only, thereby limiting the accuracy and precision of insights gained through empirical analyses. Recent work has used interpolation and downscaling to yield estimates of sub-national economic output at a global scale, but respective data sets based on official, reported values only are lacking. We here present DOSE - the MCC-PIK Database Of Sub-national Economic Output. DOSE contains harmonised data on reported economic output from 1,661 sub-national regions across 83 countries from 1960 to 2020. To avoid interpolation, values are assembled from numerous statistical agencies, yearbooks and the literature and harmonised for both aggregate and sectoral output. Moreover, we provide temporally- and spatially-consistent data for regional boundaries, enabling matching with geo-spatial data such as climate observations. DOSE provides the opportunity for detailed analyses of economic development at the subnational level, consistent with reported values.

Arraying of microphotosynthetic power cells for enhanced power output.

Project description:Microphotosynthetic power cells (µPSCs) generate power through the exploitation of living photosynthetic microorganisms by harvesting sunlight. The thermodynamic limitations of this process restrict the power output of a single µPSC. Herein, we demonstrate µPSCs in four different array configurations to enhance power output from these power cells. To this effect, six µPSCs were arrayed in series, parallel, and combinations of series and parallel configurations. Each µPSC was injected with a 2 mL liquid culture of photosynthetic microorganisms (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) in the anode and 2 mL of 25% (w/v) electron acceptor potassium ferricyanide (K3Fe(CN)6) in the cathode. The combinations of µPSCs connected in series and parallel generated higher power than the individual series and parallel configurations. The combinations of six µPSCs connected in series and in parallel produced a high power density of 1914 mWm-2 in the presence of white fluorescent light illumination at 20 µEm-2s-1. Furthermore, to realize the array strategy for real-time applications, a 1.7 V/2 mA rating light-emitting diode (LED) was powered by combinations of series and parallel array configurations. The results indicate the reliability of µPSCs to produce electricity from photosynthetic microorganisms for low-power applications. In addition, the results suggest that a combination of microlevel photosynthetic cells in array format represents a powerful optimal design strategy to enhance the power output from µPSCs.

A comprehensive scheme for power management of FC/SC/battery, and solar-roof PV source in electric vehicle systems.

Project description:This paper proposes a new energy management system to combine Fuel Cells (FC) and photovoltaic (PV) panels as primary power sources. Also, battery and Super Capacitor (SC) banks are considered as secondary energy systems. The high power density and the fast dynamics of SCs combined with the high energy density and medium dynamics of batteries would be an ideal combination for FC vehicles. The high step-up DC/DC converter is used along with the implementation of the maximum power point tracking algorithm (MPPT) to adapt the low power of PV panels with the high power of DC-Link. Also, an evolutionary optimization algorithm is proposed along with the FOPI controller to improve the output of the energy management algorithm and control the sources more efficiently. The simulation results are validated for a standard urban driving cycle. It indicates for the case of the sustained presence of a PV source during a typical driving cycle, the source delivers about 55% of its maximum power.

Project description:The data presented below is the thermodynamic simulation and mathematical model development for the single and double flash cycles of Cerro Prieto geothermal power plants. For more insight into analysis thermodynamic, please see "thermodynamic simulation and mathematical model for single and double flash cycles of Cerro Prieto geothermal power plants" [1]. The datasets contained in this paper are thermodynamic simulations obtained in Aspen Hysys software, the data described represents the net power output and thermal efficiency for Cerro Prieto geothermal power plants, located in Mexicali, México. A single flash and double flash cycle have been selected for power generation at this facility. The single flash net power output and the thermal efficiency data includes eight main parameters: Well temperature (°C), Separator pressure (kPa), Condenser pressure (kPa), Turbine's power (kW), Phase Fraction, Mass Flow (kg/h), Energy input (kW) and Energy output (kW). Whereas the double flash net power output and the thermal efficiency data includes eight main parameters: Well temperature (°C), High-pressure separator (kPa), Low-pressure separator (kPa), Condenser pressure (kPa), Turbine's power (kW), Phase Fraction, Mass Flow (kg/h), Energy Input (kW) and Energy output (kW).
