Electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) data for characterising crystalline basement structures in Abeokuta, southwestern Nigeria.

ABSTRACT: This article consists of data sets for five (5) traverses of 2D electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) collected in Abeokuta, southwestern Nigeria. ABEM Terrameter (SAS1000/4000) system and dipole-dipole array were used for the data collection. RES2DINV computer program was used to invert the observed apparent resistivity data to obtain 2D inverse model images of resistivity distribution of the subsurface. The 2D resistivity images were used to characterise the subsurface and delineate the crystalline basement features of hydrological importance in the area.

Project description:This article consists of data sets for thirty (30) vertical electrical sounding (VES) and four (4) traverses of 2D electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) collected within, Ado-Ekiti, southwestern Nigeria using an ABEM Terrameter (SAS 1000/4000) system. Win-Resist computer program was used to process the apparent resistivity data sets for the VES to determine the geoelectric layers and their respective parameters (resistivity and thickness). The observed data sets for the 2D ERI were processed using RES2DINV software to obtain 2D inverse model resistivity distribution of the subsurface. The resistivity soundings and the 2D ERI were combined to delineate and characterise the crystalline basement features associated with basement aquifers.

Geoelectrical resistivity data sets for subsurface characterisation and aquifer delineation in Iyesi, southwestern Nigeria.

Project description:This article consists of geoelectrical resistivity data sets for thirty (30) vertical electrical sounding (VES) and four (4) traverses of 2D electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) collected within Iyesi, Ota, southwestern Nigeria for about five (5) weeks between December, 2016 and January, 2017 using an ABEM Terrameter (SAS1000/4000). The observed apparent resistivity data sets for the VES were processed using WinResist to obtain geoelectric layer parameters while those of the 2D ERI were processed with RES2DINV to obtain 2D inverse model resistivity images. The geoelectric parameters for the VES and the inverse models for the 2D ERI were integrated to characterise the subsurface and delineate the underlying aquifer units.

Modeling the electrical resistivity of polymer composites with segregated structures.

Project description:Hybrid carbon nanotube composites with two different types of fillers have attracted considerable attention for various advantages. The incorporation of micro-scale secondary fillers creates an excluded volume that leads to the increase in the electrical conductivity. By contrast, nano-scale secondary fillers shows a conflicting behavior of the decreased electrical conductivity with micro-scale secondary fillers. Although several attempts have been made in theoretical modeling of secondary-filler composites, the knowledge about how the electrical conductivity depends on the dimension of secondary fillers was not fully understood. This work aims at comprehensive understanding of the size effect of secondary particulate fillers on the electrical conductivity, via the combination of Voronoi geometry induced from Swiss cheese models and the underlying percolation theory. This indicates a transition in the impact of the excluded volume, i.e., the adjustment of the electrical conductivity was measured in cooperation with loading of second fillers with different sizes.

Health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in public pipe-borne water from selected households in Abeokuta, Southwestern, Nigeria.

Project description:Public pipe-borne water serves as a significant source of potable water in some communities in Abeokuta. However, the presence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) at certain concentrations in drinking water can render it unsuitable for consumption due to associated health risks. This study assessed the health risks posed by PTEs in public pipe-borne water collected from ten households in six communities in Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria. Pipe-borne water samples were subjected to PTE (lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) analysis using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, following standard digestion procedures for the water samples. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The health risk assessment was conducted for the Hazard Quotient (HQ) and Cancer Risk (CR) using the USEPA IRIS models. The water quality index (WQI) was also evaluated. Results indicated varying levels of PTEs, with certain areas exceeding the permissible limits for Cd (0.01-0.02 mg/L), Cr (0.05-0.11 mg/L), and Pb (0.50-0.97 mg/L), posing significant health risks to humans. The health risk assessment revealed that the HQ for Cd, Cr, and Pb exceeded the permissible limit of 1.0 in pipe-borne water consumed by children and infants, indicating potential adverse effects. Additionally, the CR values for Cd, Cr, and Pb in water samples consumed by all age groups also surpassed the permissible limit of 1.0 × 10-4, suggesting a probable risk of cancer development. The WQIs exceeding the threshold limit of 300 were observed in pipe-borne water samples, indicating that the water is unfit for consumption. Therefore, this study recommends the removal of potential toxic elements at the point of collection by using taps fitted with activated carbon filters.

Geo-resistivity data set for groundwater aquifer exploration in the basement complex terrain of Nigeria, West Africa.

Project description:To delineate prolific groundwater aquifers in the basement complex terrain of Ilorin, Nigeria, West Africa, a carefully designed Electrical Resistivity Surveys were undertaken at eighty-five (85) stations using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) technique with Schlumberger array. Data acquisition system comprised SAS 3000 ABEM Resistivity Meter, a D. C. battery, four metallic electrodes, electrical cables, portable Geographic Positioning System (GPS), hammers, measuring tapes, and other accessories. In addition to the resistivity data, the geographic coordinates of the survey points were measured for ease of geo-referencing of the exact points where the data were collected and for secondary use of the data. The data acquired were processed, analysed and interpreted using auxiliary curve matching techniques and computer iteration method. The results were used to: evaluate the subsurface in terms of the different geo-electric layers, their thicknesses, depths, and resistivities; evaluate the groundwater potential of the aquifer; identify suitable sites for locating boreholes for groundwater exploitation; and recommend depths to borehole bottom in the different parts of the study area. The data presented can be reused to determine the protective capacity of the overburden material against groundwater contamination; to determine the engineering-geophysics and geotechnical properties of the rocks for Civil Engineering applications; for predicting groundwater flow models; and for mineral exploration within the area. The data presented can be used with other geophysical and geological data acquired from the same area for a better evaluation of the subsurface for multipurpose applications.

Thermally Reentrant Crystalline Phase Change in Perovskite-Derivative Nickelate Enabling Reversible Switching of Room-Temperature Electrical Resistivity.

Project description:Reversible switching of room-temperature electrical resistivity due to crystal-amorphous transition is demonstrated in various chalcogenides for development of non-volatile phase change memory. However, such reversible thermal switching of room-temperature electrical resistivity has not reported in transition metal oxides so far, despite their enormous studies on the electrical conduction like metal-insulator transition and colossal magnetoresistance effect. In this study, a thermally reversible switching of room-temperature electrical resistivity is reported with gigantic variation in a layered nickelate Sr2.5 Bi0.5 NiO5 (1201-SBNO) composed of (Sr1.5 Bi0.5 )O2 rock-salt and SrNiO3 perovskite layers via unique crystalline phase changes between the conducting 1201-SBNO with ordered (O-1201), disordered Sr/Bi arrangements in the (Sr1.5 Bi0.5 )O2 layer (D-1201), and insulating oxygen-deficient double perovskite Sr2 BiNiO4.5 (d-perovskite). The O-1201 is reentrant by high-temperature annealing of ≈1000 °C through crystalline phase change into the D-1201 and d-perovskite, resulting in the thermally reversible switching of room-temperature electrical resistivity with 102 - and 109 -fold variation, respectively. The 1201-SBNO is the first oxide to show the thermally reversible switching of room-temperature electrical resistivity via the crystalline phase changes, providing a new perspective on the electrical conduction for transition metal oxides.

EDX-SEM-XRF data from selected Precambrian Basement Complex rock samples in part of Southwestern Nigeria.

Project description:Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis, EDX mapping, Scanning Electron Microscope, SEM, together with X-ray Fluorescence Analysis, XRF, was carried out to extract the needed data from some metamorphic rock samples in part of the Nigerian Southwestern Precambrian Basement Complex, NSPBC. The foremost aim is to obtain the detail subsurface geological structures of the rocks within the area and to enhanced understanding of the processes and the types of metamorphic evolution in the area. The techniques involved qualitative and quantitative data analysis of the major, minor and radioactive elements present in the samples of rocks analyzed. The data helped to experimentally evaluate the rocks microstructures, and to also explore the development of magmatic and metamorphic mechanisms for the recognition of textual associations in the area. Applications of the EDX, SEM, and XRF data analysis are effortlessly done to determine the varied mixtures of Si, Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, and Na, in the presence of O existing in the rocks samples.The data helped in the classification and perceptive of these rocks and it was considered as a necessary tool in the knowledge of the metamorphism and origin of the Basement Complex rocks through measurement of the intensity of the emitted X-ray and its characteristics.

Variations in Crystalline Structures and Electrical Properties of Single Crystalline Boron Nitride Nanosheets.

Project description:We report the studies of (1) the basic mechanism underlying the formation of defect-free, single crystalline boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) synthesized using pulsed laser plasma deposition (PLPD) technique, (2) the variation in the crystalline structure at the edges of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets, and (3) the basic electrical properties related to the BNNSs tunneling effect and electrical breakdown voltage. The nanoscale morphologies of BNNSs are characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The results show that each sample consisted of a number of transparent BNNSs that partially overlapped one another. Varying the deposition duration yielded different thicknesses of sample but did not affect the morphology, structure, and thickness of individual BNNSs pieces. Analysis of the SEM and HRTEM data revealed changes in the spatial period of the B3-N3 hexagonal structures and the interlayer distance at the edge of the BNNSs, which occurred due to the limited number of atomic layers and was confirmed further by x-ray diffraction (XRD) study. The experimental results clearly indicate that the values of the electrical conductivities of the super-thin BNNSs and the effect of temperature relied strongly on the direction of observation.

Microscale Electrical Resistivity Measurements to Investigate Particle Distribution.

Project description:The functional performance of a particulate thin film depends greatly on the particle distribution that forms during drying. In situ methods for monitoring the impact of different processing parameters on the distribution of particles currently require expensive and specialized equipment. This work addresses this gap by miniaturizing a geophysical prospecting method to thin-film applications. In this method, four-electrode resistivity measurements at variable probe spacing detect changes in the vertical particle concentration profile. A heuristic colloidal drying model describes the particle distribution during drying in terms of the relative effects of Brownian diffusion, sedimentation, and evaporation. For sedimentation- and evaporation-dominated drying, the film is modeled as two stratified layers of different concentrations. Solving this model simultaneously alongside Laplace's equation for electrostatic resistance identifies the parameters necessary to distinguish between diffusion-, sedimentation-, and evaporation-dominated drying. For resistive particles in a conductive solvent, simulations predict that the normalized thickness of the top layer, δt/H0, must exceed a critical value to distinguish between different drying regimes. The heuristic model results are validated theoretically by comparison to a physics-based drying model. Model predictions are experimentally validated by fabricating a custom microlithography four-line probe device and measuring the transient resistance of systems for which the drying mechanism is known. This work offers a low-cost and in situ method to identify drying mechanisms and extract physical parameters that better characterize the processing-structure-function relationships for many coatings.

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data for clay mineral mapping.

Project description:In order to identify potential zones for clay mineral (kaolinite) in Ranong province, Thailand, ten 2D ERT survey lines were deployed across potential site. The data were collected using the IRIS Syscal Pro Plus multi-electrode imaging system with internal switchbox and an array of 48 steel electrodes. The Dipole-Dipole configuration was utilized with electrode separations of 10 m. The Res2DInv software was used to process the data. Images for the resistivity survey are presented as 2D cross section of resistivity profile. The data were interpreted by comparing with geology of the area and based on the available lithological borehole information.
