ABSTRACT: This article provides data on the impact of board meeting frequency and financial performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. We obtained the dataset from Nigeria stock exchange (NSE) database. The time frame used for this work is 2010-2016. TOBIN Q was used as a major determinant of financial performance. The raw data is easily accessible on Nigeria stock exchange website. We describe the value of this data as well as the method to analyze the data.

Project description:This study presents a data-set on the influence of managerial incentives on bank performance in selected Deposit Money Banks (DMB) in Nigeria. The use of managerial incentives to align interests of the principal and agent is advocated by agency theorists, but the peculiarity of the banking industry in terms of the role of regulation, capital structure, opacity and complexity of its transactions among others presents a different proposition in corporate governance research. The data collected over a longitudinal period between 2006 and 2016, provide information on specific managerial incentives and financial performance measures. Descriptive and inferential statistics such as correlation, and panel regression analysis estimates are presented. When analysed, the data can be a pointer in determining the unique managerial incentives predictors that could enhance a bank׳s performance.

Dataset on ethical leadership and corporate reputation - Nigerian deposit money banks׳ perspective.

Project description:Banking institutions play a critical role in any economy, and their stability is crucial to the economic development of a nation. The wave of corporate scandals that rocked the industry left the public with a loss of confidence. Efforts have since been channeled by banks towards developing their corporate governance mechanisms, except that the aspect of ethical leadership and how it translates to a bank׳s corporate reputation has not received sufficient attention. The dataset presented the perception of employees in selected deposit money banks in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used to elicit data from the employees. Inferential statistics such as correlation, and regression analysis were adopted. The data collected focused on the impact of ethical leadership on corporate reputation. It also provided information on the significant factors affecting ethical leadership as well as the measures of corporate reputation. The survey data when analysed can be a pointer in determining the unique ethical leadership predictors that could enhance a bank׳s reputation.

Ownership structure and financial performance: Evidence from Kenyan commercial banks.

Project description:The study examined the relationship between ownership structure and financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya for the period 2009-2020. The data were collected from audited financial statements of 39 commercial banks in Kenya. Regression results found strong evidence on ownership structures in explaining the differences in commercial banks' financial performance. The results established that the greatest influence of ownership structures was on net interest margin at 53.04% and return on assets at 31.37%. Influence of ownership structures was found to be low on return on equity at 3.32% and earnings per share at 2.13%. The results found a negative association between state ownership and net interest margin, negative association between management ownership and both net interest margin and earnings per share, negative association between institutional ownership and return on assets and a negative association between foreign ownership and earnings per share. Based on the findings, commercial banks should vary their ownership structures to boost financial performance. Secondly, banks with high percentage of state ownership should consider partial privatization to improve corporate governance practices. Third, banks should adopt managerial ownership policy limiting the proportion of equity stock on executives to limit their powers in strategic decision making. Fourth, the study proposes a percentage limit on equity stock of an individual institutional investor. Lastly, the study proposes that bank's management to come up with a policy detailing the role and place of foreign investors in strategic decision making to ensure their presence in every decision undertaken by bank managers.

Financial performance of rural banks in Indonesia: A two-stage DEA approach.

Project description:This study aims to analyze the efficiency performance of conventional and Islamic rural banks in Indonesia, specifically, Bank Perkreditan Rakyat (BPR) and Bank Pembiayaan Rakyat Syariah (BPRS). Using a DEA approach, the results indicate that both BPR and BPRS are still inefficient in terms of the intermediation role but are efficient in production. Furthermore, the Tobit estimation show that these two efficiency results are positively affected by location and the capital adequacy ratio (CAR). These rural banks operating in cities tend to have a higher level of efficiency than otherwise. Moreover, the higher the capital, the more efficient both Islamic and conventional rural banks in terms of production and intermediation.

Datasets of social capital and business performance in the Nigerian informal sector.

Project description:This research aimed to present data on the effect of social capital on business performance in the Nigerian informal economy. Primary data collection was carried out through a cross-sectional survey of 600 informal business owners within Ikeja Local Government Area (LGA), Lagos State, Nigeria. A simple sampling technique was further adopted in selecting the sample size of the study, and a close-ended questionnaire was adopted for the data collection process. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. This data has the potential to be reused for full empirical research relating to social capital and business performance in emerging economies.

Social Wellbeing, Board-Gender Diversity, and Financial Performance: Evidence From Chinese Fintech Companies.

Project description:The main goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between female representation on board of directors and financial performance, using evidence from Chinese fintech companies, which are providing financial services using cutting-edge technologies. This research used fintech firms listed on the Shanghai and Shenzen Stock Exchange from 2010 to 2019 to test the research questions using regression analyses by SPSS v26. According to the data, the Blau index has a large and negative influence on Tobin's Q, which demonstrates that gender diversity harms the performance of Chinese enterprises. Furthermore, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is found to have a significant and positive moderating influence on Tobin's Q, implying that the adoption of CSR converts a negative to a positive effect. Diversified board members can improve the organization's control and monitoring operations, and female-represented board of directors can participate in the CSR activities that contribute to the organization's performance. The study contributes to the research of gender diversity by providing evidence that women on board of directors enhance firm performance, and the moderating function of CSR is examined with the link of female participation on the board of directors and financial performance.

Panel financial ratios data underlying the performance of conventional and islamic banks operating in GCC.

Project description:This article contains cross-sectional time series (panel) data on 46 banks that operates in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries. This data reports a number of financial ratios that are constructed from various financial information listed in the Audited Financial Statements of the banks operating in the GCC countries. The financial statements are available in the official website of the banks. The generated financial ratios were exploited in the published article (Salih, Ghecham and Al Barghouthi, 2018). These financial ratios cover perhaps the largest time span (2006-2012) and the largest number of banks that operate in GCC.

Does intangible assets affect the financial performance and policy of commercial banks' in the emerging market?

Project description:In a digital and knowledge based economy, intangible assets are predominant and their role along with age and knowledge has become key success factors for firms. However, a very little attention was given to the intangible assets in the banking sectors' in Ethiopia and the effect still not studied yet. Therefore, the aim of this study is to empirically examine the effect of intangible assets on the financial performance and policy of 17 commercial banks in Ethiopia from the year 2017 to 2020. Return on asset and equity were used to measure the financial performance and debt as a measure of financial policy. The intangible asset is used as the main explanatory variable and asset size and liquidity as control variables. Random effect estimation technique for panel data was used. The result revealed that intangible asset has positive effect on the financial performance measured both by ROA and ROE at 5% significance level while, negative effect on the financial policy of commercial banks in Ethiopia at 1% significance level. Moreover, the study found asset size has significant and positive effect on ROA and ROE at 1% and 5% significance level respectively. Liquidity ratio has also significant positive effect on the financial performance measured both by ROA and ROE at 5% significance level. Finally, the finding revealed asset size and liquidity ratio has significant positive effect on the financial policy of commercial banks in Ethiopia at 10% and 1% significance level respectively. Therefore, the study concludes that financial performance and policy is achieved not only by using physical assets but also using intangible assets. Thus, the boards and mangers of commercial banks' ought to plan and maintain the appropriate ratio of intangible assets to total assets for securing sustainable development in achieving the maximization of shareholders wealth and to have optimum debt.

Money Walks: Implicit Mobility Behavior and Financial Well-Being.

Project description:Traditional financial decision systems (e.g. credit) had to rely on explicit individual traits like age, gender, job type, and marital status, while being oblivious to spatio-temporal mobility or the habits of the individual involved. Emerging trends in geo-aware and mobile payment systems, and the resulting "big data," present an opportunity to study human consumption patterns across space and time. Taking inspiration from animal behavior studies that have reported significant interconnections between animal spatio-temporal "foraging" behavior and their life outcomes, we analyzed a corpus of hundreds of thousands of human economic transactions and found that financial outcomes for individuals are intricately linked with their spatio-temporal traits like exploration, engagement, and elasticity. Such features yield models that are 30% to 49% better at predicting future financial difficulties than the comparable demographic models.

Board diversity and financial statement comparability: evidence from China

Project description:We investigate the relationship between board diversity (relation-oriented diversity, task-oriented diversity, and overall board diversity) and financial statement comparability. We find that diverse boards are positively associated with financial statement comparability, suggesting that board diversity improves governance mechanisms by alleviating agency conflicts, leading to higher comparability than homogenous boards. We also find that institutional ownership positively affects the association between board diversity and financial statement comparability. Furthermore, the positive effect of diversity, institutional ownership, and comparability are more pronounced in non-state-owned firms and non-crisis periods. Our findings remain consistent with a battery of econometric techniques and measures of comparability. This study provides new insights regarding the role of boardroom diversity in shaping the qualitative aspect of financial reporting, i.e., financial statement comparability.
