Mantle Cloaks Based on the Frequency Selective Metasurfaces Designed by Bayesian Optimization.

ABSTRACT: We propose a full optimization procedure for designing mantle cloaks enclosing arbitrary objects, using sub-wavelength conformal frequency selective surface (FSS). Rely on the scattering cancellation principle of mantle cloak characterized by an average surface reactance, a personal computer can achieve this design procedure. By combing a Bayesian optimization (BO) with an electromagnetic solver, we can automatically find the optimal parameters of a conformal mantle cloak which can nearly cancel the scattering from the enclosed objects. It is shown that the results obtained by our method coincide with those from a rigorous analytical model and the numerical results by full parametric scanning. The proposed methodology opens up a new route for realizing ultra-wideband illusion scattering of electromagnetic wave, which is important for stealth and microwave applications.

Optimization-based Dielectric Metasurfaces for Angle-Selective Multifunctional Beam Deflection.

Project description:Synthesization of multiple functionalities over a flat metasurface platform offers a promising approach to achieving integrated photonic devices with minimized footprint. Metasurfaces capable of diverse wavefront shaping according to wavelengths and polarizations have been demonstrated. Here we propose a class of angle-selective metasurfaces, over which beams are reflected following different and independent phase gradients in the light of the beam direction. Such powerful feature is achieved by leveraging the local phase modulation and the non-local lattice diffraction via inverse scattered field and geometry optimization in a monolayer dielectric grating, whereas most of the previous designs utilize the local phase modulation only and operate optimally for a specific angle. Beam combiner/splitter and independent multibeam deflections with up to 4 incident angles are numerically demonstrated respectively at the wavelength of 700 nm. The deflection efficiency is around 45% due to the material loss and the compromise of multi-angle responses. Flexibility of the approach is further validated by additional designs of angle-switchable metagratings as splitter/reflector and transparent/opaque mirror. The proposed designs hold great potential for increasing information density of compact optical components from the degree of freedom of angle.

Ultranarrow-Band Wavelength-Selective Thermal Emission with Aperiodic Multilayered Metamaterials Designed by Bayesian Optimization.

Project description:We computationally designed an ultranarrow-band wavelength-selective thermal radiator via a materials informatics method alternating between Bayesian optimization and thermal electromagnetic field calculation. For a given target infrared wavelength, the optimal structure was efficiently identified from over 8 billion candidates of multilayers consisting of multiple components (Si, Ge, and SiO2). The resulting optimized structure is an aperiodic multilayered metamaterial exhibiting high and sharp emissivity with a Q-factor of 273. The designed metamaterials were then fabricated, and reasonable experimental realization of the optimal performance was achieved with a Q-factor of 188, which is significantly higher than those of structures empirically designed and fabricated in the past. This is the first demonstration of the experimental realization of metamaterials designed by Bayesian optimization. The results facilitate the machine-learning-based design of metamaterials and advance our understanding of the narrow-band thermal emission mechanism of aperiodic multilayered metamaterials.

Optical filters made from random metasurfaces using Bayesian optimization.

Project description:We theoretically investigate the ability to design optical filters from a single material and a single layer of randomly dispersed resonant dielectric particles, defining a random metasurface. Using a Bayesian and generalized Mie inverse-design approach, we design particle radii distributions that give rise to longpass, shortpass, bandpass, and bandstop spectral bands in the infrared. The optical response is shown to be directly related to electric and magnetic multipole scattering of the constituent particles and their near field coupling. We discuss the effect of the particle size distribution and particle-particle coupling interactions on filter design in random systems lacking long-range order.

Controlling frequency dispersion in electromagnetic invisibility cloaks.

Project description:Electromagnetic cloaking, as challenging as it may be to the physicist and the engineer has become a topical subject over the past decade. Thanks to the transformations optics (TO) invisibility devices are in sight even though quite drastic limitations remain yet to be lifted. The extreme material properties which are deduced from TO can be achieved in practice using dispersive metamaterials. However, the bandwidth over which a metamaterial cloak is efficient is drastically limited. We design and simulate a spherical cloak which takes into account the dispersive nature of relative permittivity and permeability tensors realized by plasma-like metamaterials. This spherical cloak works over a broad frequency-band even though these materials are of a highly dispersive nature. We establish two equations of state that link the eigenvalues of the permittivity and permeability tensors in every spherical cloak regardless of the geometrical transformation. Frequency dispersive properties do not disrupt cloaking as long as the equations of states are satisfied in the metamaterial cloak.

Responses of Waveform-Selective Absorbing Metasurfaces to Oblique Waves at the Same Frequency.

Project description:Conventional materials vary their electromagnetic properties in response to the frequency of an incoming wave, but these responses generally remain unchanged at the same frequency unless nonlinearity is involved. Waveform-selective metasurfaces, recently developed by integrating several circuit elements with planar subwavelength periodic structures, allowed us to distinguish different waves even at the same frequency depending on how long the waves continued, namely, on their pulse widths. These materials were thus expected to give us an additional degree of freedom to control electromagnetic waves. However, all the past studies were demonstrated with waves at a normal angle only, although in reality electromagnetic waves scatter from various structures or boundaries and therefore illuminate the metasurfaces at oblique angles. Here we study angular dependences of waveform-selective metasurfaces both numerically and experimentally. We demonstrate that, if designed properly, capacitor-based waveform-selective metasurfaces more effectively absorb short pulses than continuous waves (CWs) for a wide range of the incident angle, while inductor-based metasurfaces absorb CWs more strongly. Our study is expected to be usefully exploited for applying the concept of waveform selectivity to a wide range of existing microwave devices to expand their functionalities or performances in response to pulse width as a new capability.

Dual-band optical collimator based on deep-learning designed, fabrication-friendly metasurfaces.

Project description:Metasurfaces, which consist of arrays of ultrathin planar nanostructures (also known as "meta-atoms"), offer immense potential for use in high-performance optical devices through the precise manipulation of electromagnetic waves with subwavelength spatial resolution. However, designing meta-atom structures that simultaneously meet multiple functional requirements (e.g., for multiband or multiangle operation) is an arduous task that poses a significant design burden. Therefore, it is essential to establish a robust method for producing intricate meta-atom structures as functional devices. To address this issue, we developed a rapid construction method for a multifunctional and fabrication-friendly meta-atom library using deep neural networks coupled with a meta-atom selector that accounts for realistic fabrication constraints. To validate the proposed method, we successfully applied the approach to experimentally demonstrate a dual-band metasurface collimator based on complex free-form meta-atoms. Our results qualify the proposed method as an efficient and reliable solution for designing complex meta-atom structures in high-performance optical device implementations.

Structure-based optimization of designed Armadillo-repeat proteins.

Project description:The armadillo domain is a right-handed super-helix of repeating units composed of three α-helices each. Armadillo repeat proteins (ArmRPs) are frequently involved in protein-protein interactions, and because of their modular recognition of extended peptide regions they can serve as templates for the design of artificial peptide binding scaffolds. On the basis of sequential and structural analyses, different consensus-designed ArmRPs were synthesized and show high thermodynamic stabilities, compared to naturally occurring ArmRPs. We determined the crystal structures of four full-consensus ArmRPs with three or four identical internal repeats and two different designs for the N- and C-caps. The crystal structures were refined at resolutions ranging from 1.80 to 2.50 Å for the above mentioned designs. A redesign of our initial caps was required to obtain well diffracting crystals. However, the structures with the redesigned caps caused domain swapping events between the N-caps. To prevent this domain swap, 9 and 6 point mutations were introduced in the N- and C-caps, respectively. Structural and biophysical analysis showed that this subsequent redesign of the N-cap prevented domain swapping and improved the thermodynamic stability of the proteins. We systematically investigated the best cap combinations. We conclude that designed ArmRPs with optimized caps are intrinsically stable and well-expressed monomeric proteins and that the high-resolution structures provide excellent structural templates for the continuation of the design of sequence-specific modular peptide recognition units based on armadillo repeats.

Waveguide Characterization of S-Band Microwave Mantle Cloaks for Dielectric and Conducting Objects.

Project description:We present the experimental characterization of mantle cloaks designed so as to minimize the electromagnetic scattering of moderately-sized dielectric and conducting cylinders at S-band microwave frequencies. Our experimental setup is based on a parallel-plate waveguide system, which emulates a two-dimensional plane-wave scattering scenario, and allows the collection of near-field maps as well as more quantitative assessments in terms of global scattering observables (e.g., total scattering width). Our results, in fairly good agreement with full-wave numerical simulations, provide a further illustration of the mantle- cloak mechanism, including its frequency-sensitivity, and confirm its effectiveness both in restoring the near-field impinging wavefront around the scatterer, and in significantly reducing the overall scattering.

Frequency-hopping wave engineering with metasurfaces.

Project description:Wave phenomena can be artificially engineered by scattering from metasurfaces, which aids in the design of radio-frequency and optical devices for wireless communication, sensing, imaging, wireless power transfer and bio/medical applications. Scattering responses vary with changing frequency; conversely, they remain unchanged at a constant frequency, which has been a long-standing limitation in the design of devices leveraging wave scattering phenomena. Here, we present metasurfaces that can scatter incident waves according to two variables-the frequency and pulse width-in multiple bands. Significantly, these scattering profiles are characterized by how the frequencies are used in different time windows due to transient circuits. In particular, by using more than one frequency with coupled transient circuits, we demonstrate variable scattering profiles in response to unique frequency sequences, which can break a conventional linear frequency concept and markedly increase the available frequency channels in accordance with a factorial number of frequencies used. Our proposed concept, which is analogous to frequency hopping in wireless communication, advances wave engineering in electromagnetics and related fields.

Multiple channelling single-photon emission with scattering holography designed metasurfaces.

Project description:Channelling single-photon emission in multiple well-defined directions and simultaneously controlling its polarization characteristics is highly desirable for numerous quantum technology applications. We show that this can be achieved by using quantum emitters (QEs) nonradiatively coupled to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which are scattered into outgoing free-propagating waves by appropriately designed metasurfaces. The QE-coupled metasurface design is based on the scattering holography approach with radially diverging SPPs as reference waves. Using holographic metasurfaces fabricated around nanodiamonds with single Ge vacancy centres, we experimentally demonstrate on-chip integrated efficient generation of two well-collimated single-photon beams propagating along different 15° off-normal directions with orthogonal linear polarizations.
