Photonic implementation of Majorana-based Berry phases.

ABSTRACT: Geometric phases, generated by cyclic evolutions of quantum systems, offer an inspiring playground for advancing fundamental physics and technologies alike. The exotic statistics of anyons realized in physical systems can be interpreted as a topological version of geometric phases. However, non-Abelian statistics has not yet been demonstrated in the laboratory. Here, we use an all-optical quantum system that simulates the statistical evolution of Majorana fermions. As a result, we experimentally realize non-Abelian Berry phases with the topological characteristic that they are invariant under continuous deformations of their control parameters. We implement a universal set of Majorana-inspired gates by performing topological and nontopological evolutions and investigate their resilience against perturbative errors. Our photonic experiment, though not scalable, suggests the intriguing possibility of experimentally simulating Majorana statistics with scalable technologies.

Photonic Majorana quantum cascade laser with polarization-winding emission.

Project description:Topological cavities, whose modes are protected against perturbations, are promising candidates for novel semiconductor laser devices. To date, there have been several demonstrations of topological lasers (TLs) exhibiting robust lasing modes. The possibility of achieving nontrivial beam profiles in TLs has recently been explored in the form of vortex wavefront emissions enabled by a structured optical pump or strong magnetic field, which are inconvenient for device applications. Electrically pumped TLs, by contrast, have attracted attention for their compact footprint and easy on-chip integration with photonic circuits. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an electrically pumped TL based on photonic analogue of a Majorana zero mode (MZM), implemented monolithically on a quantum cascade chip. We show that the MZM emits a cylindrical vector (CV) beam, with a topologically nontrivial polarization profile from a terahertz (THz) semiconductor laser.

Majorana quasiparticles and topological phases in 3D active nematics.

Project description:Quasiparticles are low-energy excitations with important roles in condensed matter physics. An intriguing example is provided by Majorana quasiparticles, which are equivalent to their antiparticles. Despite being implicated in neutrino oscillations and topological superconductivity, their experimental realizations remain very rare. Here, we propose a purely classical realization of Majorana fermions in terms of three-dimensional disclination lines in active nematics. The underlying reason is the well-known equivalence, in 3D, between a [Formula: see text] local defect profile and a [Formula: see text] profile, which acts as its antiparticle. The mapping also requires proving that defect profiles transform as spinors, and activity is needed to overcome the elastic cost associated with these excitations, so they spontaneously appear in steady state. We combine topological considerations and numerics to show that active nematics under confinement spontaneously create in their interior topologically charged disclination lines and loops, akin to Majorana quasiparticles with finite momentum. Within a long channel, the phenomenology we observe resembles that of the Kitaev chain, as Majorana-like states appear near the boundaries, while a delocalized topological excitation arises in the form of a chiral disclination line. The analogy between 3D nematic defects and topological quasiparticles further suggests that active turbulence can be viewed as a topological phase, where defects percolate to form delocalized topological quasiparticles similar to those observed in the channel. We propose that three-dimensional active disclinations can be used to probe the physics of Majorana spinors at much larger scale than that for which they were originally introduced, potentially facilitating their experimental study.

Simulating the exchange of Majorana zero modes with a photonic system.

Project description:The realization of Majorana zero modes is in the centre of intense theoretical and experimental investigations. Unfortunately, their exchange that can reveal their exotic statistics needs manipulations that are still beyond our experimental capabilities. Here we take an alternative approach. Through the Jordan-Wigner transformation, the Kitaev's chain supporting two Majorana zero modes is mapped to the spin-1/2 chain. We experimentally simulated the spin system and its evolution with a photonic quantum simulator. This allows us to probe the geometric phase, which corresponds to the exchange of two Majorana zero modes positioned at the ends of a three-site chain. Finally, we demonstrate the immunity of quantum information encoded in the Majorana zero modes against local errors through the simulator. Our photonic simulator opens the way for the efficient realization and manipulation of Majorana zero modes in complex architectures.

Large three-dimensional photonic crystals based on monocrystalline liquid crystal blue phases.

Project description:Although there have been intense efforts to fabricate large three-dimensional photonic crystals in order to realize their full potential, the technologies developed so far are still beset with various material processing and cost issues. Conventional top-down fabrications are costly and time-consuming, whereas natural self-assembly and bottom-up fabrications often result in high defect density and limited dimensions. Here we report the fabrication of extraordinarily large monocrystalline photonic crystals by controlling the self-assembly processes which occur in unique phases of liquid crystals that exhibit three-dimensional photonic-crystalline properties called liquid-crystal blue phases. In particular, we have developed a gradient-temperature technique that enables three-dimensional photonic crystals to grow to lateral dimensions of ~1 cm (~30,000 of unit cells) and thickness of ~100 μm (~ 300 unit cells). These giant single crystals exhibit extraordinarily sharp photonic bandgaps with high reflectivity, long-range periodicity in all dimensions and well-defined lattice orientation.Conventional fabrication approaches for large-size three-dimensional photonic crystals are problematic. By properly controlling the self-assembly processes, the authors report the fabrication of monocrystalline blue phase liquid crystals that exhibit three-dimensional photonic-crystalline properties.

Realization of tunable photonic spin Hall effect by tailoring the Pancharatnam-berry phase.

Project description:Recent developments in the field of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) offer new opportunities for advantageous measurement of the optical parameters (refractive index, thickness, etc.) of nanostructures and enable spin-based photonics applications in the future. However, it remains a challenge to develop a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting for generation and manipulation of spin-polarized photons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a scheme to realize the photonic SHE tunably by tailoring the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP). It is shown that light beams whose polarization with a tunable spatial inhomogeneity can contribute to steering the space-variant PBP which creates a spin-dependent geometric phase gradient, thereby possibly realizing a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting. Our scheme provides a convenient method to manipulate the spin photon. The results can be extrapolated to other physical system with similar topological origins.

Human psychophysical discrimination of spatially dependant Pancharatnam-Berry phases in optical spin-orbit states.

Project description:We tested the ability of human observers to discriminate distinct profiles of spatially dependant geometric phases when directly viewing stationary structured light beams. Participants viewed polarization coupled orbital angular momentum (OAM) states, or "spin-orbit" states, in which the OAM was induced through Pancharatnam-Berry phases. The coupling between polarization and OAM in these beams manifests as spatially dependant polarization. Regions of uniform polarization are perceived as specifically oriented Haidinger's brushes, and study participants discriminated between two spin-orbit states based on the rotational symmetry in the spatial orientations of these brushes. Participants used self-generated eye movements to prevent adaptation to the visual stimuli. After initial training, the participants were able to correctly discriminate between two spin-orbit states, differentiated by OAM [Formula: see text], with an average success probability of [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]). These results support our previous observation that human observers can directly perceive spin-orbit states, and extend this finding to non-rotating beams, OAM modes induced via Pancharatnam-Berry phases, and the discrimination of states that are differentiated by OAM.

Topological quantum computation based on chiral Majorana fermions.

Project description:The chiral Majorana fermion is a massless self-conjugate fermion which can arise as the edge state of certain 2D topological matters. It has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in a hybrid device of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a conventional superconductor. Its closely related cousin, the Majorana zero mode in the bulk of the corresponding topological matter, is known to be applicable in topological quantum computations. Here we show that the propagation of chiral Majorana fermions leads to the same unitary transformation as that in the braiding of Majorana zero modes and propose a platform to perform quantum computation with chiral Majorana fermions. A Corbino ring junction of the hybrid device can use quantum coherent chiral Majorana fermions to implement the Hadamard gate and the phase gate, and the junction conductance yields a natural readout for the qubit state.

Scalable Majorana vortex modes in iron-based superconductors.

Project description:The iron-based superconductor FeTe x Se1-x is one of the material candidates hosting Majorana vortex modes residing in the vortex cores. It has been observed by recent scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurement that the fraction of vortex cores having zero-bias peaks decreases with increasing magnetic field on the surface of FeTe x Se1-x . The hybridization of two Majorana vortex modes cannot simply explain this phenomenon. We construct a three-dimensional tight-binding model simulating the physics of over a hundred Majorana vortex modes in FeTe x Se1-x . Our simulation shows that the Majorana hybridization and disordered vortex distribution can explain the decreasing fraction of the zero-bias peaks observed in the experiment; the statistics of the energy peaks off zero energy in our Majorana simulation are in agreement with the experiment. These agreements lead to an important indication of scalable Majorana vortex modes in FeTe x Se1-x . Thus, FeTe x Se1-x can be one promising platform having scalable Majorana qubits for quantum computing.

Dislocation Majorana bound states in iron-based superconductors.

Project description:We show that lattice dislocations of topological iron-based superconductors such as FeTe1-xSex will intrinsically trap non-Abelian Majorana quasiparticles, in the absence of any external magnetic field. Our theory is motivated by the recent experimental observations of normal-state weak topology and surface magnetism that coexist with superconductivity in FeTe1-xSex, the combination of which naturally achieves an emergent second-order topological superconductivity in a two-dimensional subsystem spanned by screw or edge dislocations. This exemplifies a new embedded higher-order topological phase in class D, where Majorana zero modes appear around the "corners" of a low-dimensional embedded subsystem, instead of those of the full crystal. A nested domain wall theory is developed to understand the origin of these defect Majorana zero modes. When the surface magnetism is absent, we further find that s± pairing symmetry itself is capable of inducing a different type of class-DIII embedded higher-order topology with defect-bound Majorana Kramers pairs. We also provide detailed discussions on the real-world material candidates for our proposals, including FeTe1-xSex, LiFeAs, β-PdBi2, and heterostructures of bismuth, etc. Our work establishes lattice defects as a new venue to achieve high-temperature topological quantum information processing.

Implementation of school-based services for students with autism: Barriers and facilitators across urban and rural districts and phases of implementation.

Project description:Lay abstractThe law requires that schools use evidence-based practices to educate students with autism spectrum disorder. However, these practices are often not used, or are not used correctly in school programs. Understanding barriers and facilitators of use of evidence-based practices in schools will help improve the implementation process. This study uses focus groups to characterize how school-based providers representing urban or rural school districts perceive barriers and facilitators for implementing new practices for students with autism spectrum disorder. Guiding questions include the following: (1) Are contextual factors perceived as barriers or facilitators and how do these vary by district location? and (2) What are the key factors impacting implementation across the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment phases? Focus group participants (n = 33) were service providers to children with autism spectrum disorder from urban- and rural-located school districts. Several personnel-related themes (attitudes and buy-in, knowledge and skills, staffing, and burnout) were shared by participants representing both urban and rural districts. However, some personnel-related themes and organizational factors were unique to rural or urban districts. For example, themes related to system and organizational factors (leadership approval, support and expectations, district structure, competing priorities, time for effective professional development, litigation and due process, and materials and resources) differed between the district locations. This project serves as an initial step in identifying implementation strategies that may improve the use of evidence-based practices in schools.
