Low birth weight associates with glomerular area in young male IgA nephropathy patients.

ABSTRACT:

Background

In a recent study we demonstrated that low birth weight (LBW) was associated with increased risk of progressive IgA nephropathy (IgAN). In the present study we investigate whether this could be explained by differences in glomerular morphological parameters.

Methods

The Medical Birth Registry of Norway has registered all births since 1967 and the Norwegian Kidney Biopsy Registry has registered all kidney biopsies since 1988. Patients diagnosed with IgAN, registered birth weight and estimated glomerular filtration rate above 60 ml/min/1.73m² at time of diagnosis were eligible for inclusion.
