Solar-Driven Hydrogen Peroxide Production Using Polymer-Supported Carbon Dots as Heterogeneous Catalyst.

ABSTRACT: Safe, sustainable, and green production of hydrogen peroxide is an exciting proposition due to the role of hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant and energy carrier for fuel cells. The current work reports the development of carbon dot-impregnated waterborne hyperbranched polyurethane as a heterogeneous photo-catalyst for solar-driven production of hydrogen peroxide. The results reveal that the carbon dots possess a suitable band-gap of 2.98 eV, which facilitates effective splitting of both water and ethanol under solar irradiation. Inclusion of the carbon dots within the eco-friendly polymeric material ensures their catalytic activity and also provides a facile route for easy catalyst separation, especially from a solubilizing medium. The overall process was performed in accordance with the principles of green chemistry using bio-based precursors and aqueous medium. This work highlights the potential of carbon dots as an effective photo-catalyst.

Steering Photoelectrons Excited in Carbon Dots into Platinum Cluster Catalyst for Solar-Driven Hydrogen Production.

Project description:In composite photosynthetic systems, one most primary promise is to pursue the effect coupling among light harvesting, charge transfer, and catalytic kinetics. Herein, this study designs the reduced carbon dots (r-CDs) as both photon harvesters and photoelectron donors in combination with the platinum (Pt) clusters and fabricated the function-integrated r-CD/Pt photocatalyst through a photochemical route to control the anchoring of Pt clusters on r-CDs' surface for solar-driven hydrogen (H2) generation. In the obtained r-CD/Pt composite, the r-CDs absorb solar photons and transform them into energetic electrons, which transfer to the Pt clusters with favorable charge separation for H2 evolution reaction (HER). As a result, the efficient coupling of respective natures from r-CDs in photon harvesting and Pt in proton reduction is achieved through well-steered photoelectron transfer in the r-CD/Pt system to cultivate a remarkable and stable photocatalytic H2 evolution activity with an average rate of 681 µmol g-1 h-1. This work integrates two functional components into an effective HER photocatalyst and gains deep insights into the regulation of the function coupling in composite photosynthetic systems.

Linear Conjugated Polymers for Solar-Driven Hydrogen Peroxide Production: The Importance of Catalyst Stability.

Project description:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is one of the most important industrial oxidants. In principle, photocatalytic H2O2 synthesis from oxygen and H2O using sunlight could provide a cleaner alternative route to the current anthraquinone process. Recently, conjugated organic materials have been studied as photocatalysts for solar fuels synthesis because they offer synthetic tunability over a large chemical space. Here, we used high-throughput experiments to discover a linear conjugated polymer, poly(3-4-ethynylphenyl)ethynyl)pyridine (DE7), which exhibits efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production from H2O and O2 under visible light illumination for periods of up to 10 h or so. The apparent quantum yield was 8.7% at 420 nm. Mechanistic investigations showed that the H2O2 was produced via the photoinduced stepwise reduction of O2. At longer photolysis times, however, this catalyst decomposed, suggesting a need to focus the photostability of organic photocatalysts, as well as the initial catalytic production rates.

Polymer Dots as Photoactive Membrane Vesicles for [FeFe]-Hydrogenase Self-Assembly and Solar-Driven Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:A semiartificial photosynthesis approach that utilizes enzymes for solar fuel production relies on efficient photosensitizers that should match the enzyme activity and enable long-term stability. Polymer dots (Pdots) are biocompatible photosensitizers that are stable at pH 7 and have a readily modifiable surface morphology. Therefore, Pdots can be considered potential photosensitizers to drive such enzyme-based systems for solar fuel formation. This work introduces and unveils in detail the interaction within the biohybrid assembly composed of binary Pdots and the HydA1 [FeFe]-hydrogenase from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The direct attachment of hydrogenase on the surface of toroid-shaped Pdots was confirmed by agarose gel electrophoresis, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM), and cryogenic electron tomography (Cryo-ET). Ultrafast transient spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize photoinduced excitation and dissociation into charges within Pdots. The study reveals that implementation of a donor-acceptor architecture for heterojunction Pdots leads to efficient subpicosecond charge separation and thus enhances hydrogen evolution (88 460 μmolH2·gH2ase-1·h-1). Adsorption of [FeFe]-hydrogenase onto Pdots resulted in a stable biohybrid assembly, where hydrogen production persisted for days, reaching a TON of 37 500 ± 1290 in the presence of a redox mediator. This work represents an example of a homogeneous biohybrid system combining polymer nanoparticles and an enzyme. Detailed spectroscopic studies provide a mechanistic understanding of light harvesting, charge separation, and transport studied, which is essential for building semiartificial photosynthetic systems with efficiencies beyond natural and artificial systems.

Efficient Production of Solar Hydrogen Peroxide Using Piezoelectric Polarization and Photoinduced Charge Transfer of Nanopiezoelectrics Sensitized by Carbon Quantum Dots.

Project description:Piezoelectric semiconductors have emerged as redox catalysts, and challenges include effective conversion of mechanical energy to piezoelectric polarization and achieving high catalytic activity. The catalytic activity can be enhanced by simultaneous irradiation of ultrasound and light, but the existing piezoelectric semiconductors have trouble absorbing visible light. A piezoelectric catalyst is designed and tested for the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). It is based on Nb-doped tetragonal BaTiO3 (BaTiO3 :Nb) and is sensitized by carbon quantum dots (CDs). The photosensitizer injects electrons into the conduction band of the semiconductor, while the piezoelectric polarization directed electrons to the semiconductor surface, allowing for a high-rate generation of H2 O2 . The piezoelectric polarization field restricts the recombination of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. A production rate of 1360 µmol gcatalyst -1 h-1 of H2 O2 is achieved under visible light and ultrasound co-irradiation. Individual piezo- and photocatalysis yielded lower production rates. Furthermore, the CDs enhance the piezocatalytic activity of the BaTiO3 :Nb. It is noted that moderating the piezoelectricity of BaTiO3 :Nb via microstructure modulation influences the piezophotocatalytic activity. This work shows a new methodology for synthesizing H2 O2 by using visible light and mechanical energy.

Solar-Driven One-Compartment Hydrogen Peroxide-Photofuel Cell Using Bismuth Vanadate Photoanode.

Project description:One-compartment H2O2-photofuel cells using monoclinic scheelite BiVO4 film deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide (ms-BiVO4/FTO) as the photoanode, Prussian blue film-coated FTO cathode, and deaerated aqueous electrolyte solution of 0.1 M NaClO4 and 0.1 M H2O2 were constructed. Mesoporous TiO2 photoanode cells with the same cathode and electrolyte solution were also prepared for comparison. The ms-BiVO4/FTO photoanode was prepared by a two-step route consisting of spin coating of a precursor solution on FTO and subsequent heating at 500 °C in the air. The thickness of the ms-BiVO4 film was controlled in the range from 50 to 500 nm by the number of the spin-coating times. There is an optimum thickness of the ms-BiVO4 film in the cell performances under illumination of simulated sunlight (AM 1.5, 100 mW cm-2, 1 sun). Under the optimum conditions, the ms-BiVO4/FTO photoanode cell provides a short-circuit current (J sc) = 0.81 mA cm-2 and an open-circuit voltage (V oc) = 0.61 V, far surpassing the values of J sc = 0.01 mA cm-2 and V oc = 0.31 V for the conventional mesoporous TiO2 photoanode cell. The striking cell performance is ascribable to the high visible-light activity of ms-BiVO4 for H2O2 oxidation and its low thermocatalytic activity for the decomposition.

Solar-Driven Generation of Hydrogen Peroxide on Phenol-Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Resin Photocatalysts.

Project description:Photocatalytic generation of H2O2 from water and O2 under sunlight is a promising artificial photosynthesis reaction to generate renewable fuel. We previously found that resorcinol-formaldehyde resin powders prepared with a high-temperature hydrothermal method become semiconductors comprising π-conjugated/π-stacked benzenoid-quinoid donor-acceptor resorcinol units and are active for photocatalytic H2O2 generation. Here, we have prepared phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde resins with small amounts of phenol (∼5 mol % relative to resorcinol), which show enhanced photocatalytic activity. Incorporating phenol bearing a single -OH group in the resin matrices relaxes the restriction on the arrangement of the aromatic rings originating from the H-bonding interactions between the resorcinol -OH groups. This creates stronger donor-acceptor π-stacking and increases the electron conductivity of the resins. We have demonstrated that simulated sunlight illumination of the resins in water under an atmospheric pressure of O2 stably generated H2O2 with more than 0.9% solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency.

Application-Specific Catalyst Layers: Pt-Containing Carbon Nanofibers for Hydrogen Peroxide Detection.

Project description:Complete removal of metal catalyst particles from carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and other carbon nanostructures is extremely difficult, and the envisioned applications may be compromised by the left-over impurities. To circumvent these problems, one should use, wherever possible, such catalyst materials that are meant to remain in the structure and have some application-specific role, making any removal steps unnecessary. Thus, as a proof-of-concept, we present here a nanocarbon-based material platform for electrochemical hydrogen peroxide measurement utilizing a Pt catalyst layer to grow CNFs with intact Pt particles at the tips of the CNFs. Backed by careful scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis, we show that this material can be readily realized with the Pt catalyst layer thickness impacting the resulting structure and also present a growth model to explain the evolution of the different types of structures. In addition, we show by electrochemical analysis that the material exhibits characteristic features of Pt in cyclic voltammetry and it can detect very small amounts of hydrogen peroxide with very fast response times. Thus, the present sensor platform provides an interesting electrode material with potential for biomolecule detection and in fuel cells and batteries. In the wider range, we propose a new approach where the selection of catalytic particles used for carbon nanostructure growth is made so that (i) they do not need to be removed and (ii) they will have essential role in the final application.

A silica-supported iron oxide catalyst capable of activating hydrogen peroxide at neutral pH values.

Project description:Iron oxides catalyze the conversion of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) into oxidants capable of transforming recalcitrant contaminants. Unfortunately, the process is relatively inefficient at circumneutral pH values because of competing reactions that decompose H(2)O(2) without producing oxidants. Silica- and alumina-containing iron oxides prepared by sol-gel processing of aqueous solutions containing Fe(ClO(4))(3), AlCl(3), and tetraethyl orthosilicate efficiently catalyzed the decomposition of H(2)O(2) into oxidants capable of transforming phenol at circumneutral pH values. Relative to hematite, goethite, and amorphous FeOOH, the silica-iron oxide catalyst exhibited a stoichiometric efficiency, defined as the number of moles of phenol transformed per mole of H(2)O(2) consumed, which was 10-40 times higher than that of the iron oxides. The silica-alumina-iron oxide catalyst had a stoichiometric efficiency that was 50-80 times higher than that of the iron oxides. The significant enhancement in oxidant production is attributable to the interaction of Fe with Al and Si in the mixed oxides, which alters the surface redox processes, favoring the production of strong oxidants during H(2)O(2) decomposition.

Palladium Supported on Porous Organic Polymer as Heterogeneous and Recyclable Catalyst for Cross Coupling Reaction.

Project description:Palladium immobilized on an amide and ether functionalized porous organic polymer (Pd@AEPOP) is reported to be an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck cross-coupling reaction of aryl iodides with styrene for the synthesis of diphenylethene derivatives. Excellent yields can be obtained using a 0.8 mol% Pd catalyst loading under the optimized reaction condition. The heterogeneous Pd@AEPOP catalyst can also be applied on the Suzuki reaction and the reduction of nitroarene.

Efficient Generation of Hydrogen Peroxide and Formate by an Organic Polymer Dots Photocatalyst in Alkaline Conditions.

Project description:A photocatalyst comprising binary organic polymer dots (Pdots) was prepared. The Pdots were constructed from poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole), as an electron donor, and 1-[3-(methoxycarbonyl)propyl]-1-phenyl-[6.6]C61 , as an electron acceptor. The photocatalyst produces H2 O2 in alkaline conditions (1 M KOH) with a production rate of up to 188 mmol h-1 g-1 . The external quantum efficiencies were 30 % (5 min) and 14 % (75 min) at 450 nm. Furthermore, photo-oxidation of methanol by Pdots, followed by a disproportionation reaction and an oxidation reaction, produced the high-value chemical formate. On the basis of various spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements, the photophysical processes of the system were studied in detail and a reaction mechanism was proposed.
