Characterization of the Genome Sequences of Enterovirus C109 from Two Respiratory Disease Cases in Florida, 2016.

ABSTRACT: The genomic sequences of two enterovirus C109 isolates (EV-C109 USA/FL/2016-21003 and EV-C109 USA/FL/2016-21002) were obtained during two separate case investigations of respiratory disease in two children. This marks the first description of EV-C109 genomes in the United States.

Project description:Draft genome sequences of five Clostridioides difficile clinical isolates were obtained in Florida, USA. Three isolates, designated TGH29 (sequence type 1 [ST1]/clade 2), TGH79 (ST11/clade 5), and TGH91 (ST35/clade 1), contained toxin-encoding genes. The two nontoxigenic strains were classified as TGH114 (ST109/clade 4) and TGH132 (ST15/clade 1). Antimicrobial resistance determinants and plasmids were detected and putative prophages predicted in some isolates.

Detection and complete genome characterization of human enterovirus 118 from children with acute respiratory disease in China.

Project description:Enterovirus 118 (EV-118) within species HEV-C was detected in two 5-month-old boys with pneumonia in China. The EV-118 from both cases was genetically closer to ISR10 strain from Israel than to PER161 strain from Peru based on VP1 gene sequences. The complete genome of the detected EV-118 consists of 7,360 nucleotides, excluding the poly (A) tail. The 5'UTR contains 669 nucleotides, and 3'UTR consists of 73 nucleotides. A single open reading frame from base 670 to 7,287 that encodes a 2,206-amino-acid polyprotein was featured. The base composition of the full genome is 27.9 % A, 24.2 % C, 24.4 % G, and 23.6 % U. Phylogenetic analysis of the full genome sequences illustrated EV-118 was genetically closer to EV-109 and EV-105, and the Chinese strain differed from Peru strain. In summary, the presence of EV-118 was confirmed in pediatric pneumonia cases and complete genome sequences were identified for the first time in China.

Project description:We report on genomic sequences of human enteroviruses (EVs) that were identified in respiratory samples in Bern, Switzerland, in 2018 and 2019. Besides providing sequences for coxsackievirus A2, echovirus 11, and echovirus 30, we determined the sequences of rare EV-D68 and EV-C105 genotypes circulating in Switzerland.

Project description:Complete genome sequences of nine enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) strains from patients in New York were obtained in 2016 by metagenomic next-generation sequencing. Comparative genomic analysis suggests that a new subclade B3, with ~4.5% nucleotide divergence from subclade B1 strains causing the 2014 outbreak, is circulating in the United States in 2016.

Enterovirus A71 Infection and Neurologic Disease, Madrid, Spain, 2016.

Project description:We conducted an observational study from January 2016 through January 2017 of patients admitted to a reference pediatric hospital in Madrid, Spain, for neurologic symptoms and enterovirus infection. Among the 30 patients, the most common signs and symptoms were fever, lethargy, myoclonic jerks, and ataxia. Real-time PCR detected enterovirus in the cerebrospinal fluid of 8 patients, nasopharyngeal aspirate in 17, and anal swab samples of 5. The enterovirus was genotyped for 25 of 30 patients; enterovirus A71 was the most common serotype (21/25) and the only serotype detected in patients with brainstem encephalitis or encephalomyelitis. Treatment was intravenous immunoglobulins for 21 patients and corticosteroids for 17. Admission to the pediatric intensive care unit was required for 14 patients. All patients survived. At admission, among patients with the most severe disease, leukocytes were elevated. For children with brainstem encephalitis or encephalomyelitis, clinicians should look for enterovirus and not limit testing to cerebrospinal fluid.

Project description:Pasteurella multocida is an animal-associated Gram-negative member of the Pasteurellaceae family. It is an opportunistic pathogen and is one of the principal bacterial species contributing to bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) in feedlot cattle. We present 16 closed genome sequences and antibiograms of isolates cultured from calves exhibiting clinical signs of BRDC and from control calves not showing signs of BRDC.

Coding-Complete Genome Sequences for Two Confirmed Monkeypox Cases in South Africa 2022.

Project description:The coding-complete genome sequences of monkeypox virus (MPXV) were obtained from skin lesion swabs from two human cases detected in South Africa in June 2022. Sequence analyses indicated that the genetic sequences of the viruses associated with these two cases were related most closely to the genetic sequences of other MPXVs reported during the 2022 multicountry outbreak and belong to the monkeypox hMPXV-1 clade (previously West Africa clade) and B.1 lineage.

Genome Sequences of Two Microcystis aeruginosa (Chroococcales, Cyanobacteria) Strains from Florida (United States) with Disparate Toxigenic Potentials.

Project description:Here, we report the draft genomes of two Microcystis aeruginosa strains, i.e., M. aeruginosa BLCC-F108, which was isolated from a toxic bloom in eutrophic waters in Lake Okeechobee (Florida, USA), and M. aeruginosa BLCC-F158, which was isolated from mesotrophic waters in Lake Tohopekaliga (Florida, USA). Genomic analyses show disparate toxin potentials for these two strains.
