Data on the ¹⁴C date obtained from the charcoal figure "Black fox" in Shulgan-Tash (Kapova) cave, Southern Ural, Russia.

ABSTRACT: Shulgan-Tash (Kapova) cave in southern Ural, Russia, is the easternmost European site hosting Late Paleolithic cave art. Most of the 195+ drawings catalogued in the cave are made with red natural pigment (ochre), and only a handful of drawings are made with charcoal, see "Catalogue of images" [4], "Höhlenmalerei im Ural: Kapova und Ignatievka; die altsteinzeitlichen Bilderhöhlen im sudlichen Ural," [5]. "Constraining the ages of the Late Palaeolithic cave paintings in the Shulgan-Tash cave, Southern Urals, Russia" [6]. None of the charcoal drawings were directly dated by ¹⁴C method so far. Black lines delineating a figure similar to the outline of a fox are known in the cave. Here we present data on the ¹⁴C AMS date of charcoal with which the lines were drawn. Calibration of the data was performed using the Bomb13NH1 dataset, see "Atmospheric radiocarbon for the period 1950-2010" [7] and the IntCal13 dataset, see "IntCal13 and Marine13 radiocarbon age calibration curves 0-50,000 years cal BP" [8]. The calibrated age distribution has maximum probability density (65.3%) between 1877 and 1918.

Project description:Background: Although chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma belong to the most important causes of disability and death in all world regions, data about the prevalence of airflow obstruction and asthma in Russia and the associated parameters have been scarce so far. We therefore assessed the prevalence of airflow obstruction and asthma in a Russian population. Methods: The population-based Ural Eye and Medical Study, conducted in a rural and urban region of Bashkortostan/Russia, included 5,392 participants (mean age: 58.6 ± 10.6 years; range: 40-94 years) out of 7,328 eligible individuals. Airflow obstruction was defined spirometrically and asthma by self-reported diagnosis. Results: Airflow obstruction was present in 369 individuals (6.8%; 95% confidence interval (CI): 6.2, 7.5) with an awareness rate of 63.4% (95%CI: 58.5, 68.4) and known duration of 19.5 ± 15.8 years (median: 16 years). Prevalence of undiagnosed airflow obstruction was 2.6% (95%CI: 2.2, 3.1). Higher prevalence of airflow obstruction was associated (multivariable analysis) with higher prevalence of current smoking [P < 0.001; odds ratio (OR): 2.91; 95%CI: 1.76, 4.83] and number of cigarette package years (P < 0.001; OR: 1.03; 95%CI: 1.02, 1.08), female gender (P = 0.03; OR: 1.42; 95%CI: 1.04, 1.93), urban region (P = 0.003; OR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.12, 1.79), higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases/stroke (P < 0.001; OR: 1.86; 95%CI: 1.45, 2.39), higher depression score (P = 0.002; OR: 1.05; 95%CI: 1.02, 1.08), and lower physical activity (P = 0.01; OR: 0.71; 95%CI: 0.54, 0.93). Asthma prevalence (2.6%; 95%CI: 2.0, 3.1; known duration: 17.2 ± 15.0 years) was associated with less alcohol consumption (OR: 0.53; 95%CI: 0.33, 0.87; P = 0.01), higher depression score (OR: 1.08; 95%CI: 1.03, 1.12; P < 0.001), and urban region (OR: 0.68; 95CI: 0.49, 0.95; P = 0.0.03). Conclusions: In this Russian population aged 40+ years, the prevalence of airflow obstruction was 6.8% with an awareness rate of 63.4% and smoking as main risk factor. Asthma prevalence was 2.6%.

Project description:BackgroundTo explore an influence of the COVID-19-related lockdown on ocular axial elongation in school children in Russia.MethodsThe participants of the school-based Ufa Children Myopia Study in Ufa/Russia underwent, at baseline in 2019/2020 before the COVID-19 outbreak and after a COVID-19-related lockdown, a detailed interview and ophthalmological examination including laser interferometric biometry for axial length measurement.ResultsThe study included 461 children (age:10.7±2.1 years;range:6.8-16.9 years). The mean follow-up was 1.41±0.33 years. Mean axial length at baseline was 23.96±0.95mm and 23.94±0.95mm in the right and left eyes, respectively. During the study period, annual axial elongation (right/left eyes) was 0.19±0.17mm/0.19±0.22mm. Before the COVID-19 lockdown, the age-dependent coefficient for axial length (ADCAL) for the right/left eyes was 0.21mm (95%CI:0.17,0.25)/0.20mm (95%CI:0.16,0.24). In children younger than 9.6 years (n = 157), annual axial elongation (right eyes) during the study period was larger than the ADCAL before the COVID-19 outbreak (0.29 mm (95%:0.00,0.66) versus 0.21 mm (95%CI:0.02,0.41)). In the groups aged 9.6 to 11.4 years (n = 148) and aged >11.4 years (n = 156), annual axial elongation during the study period was comparable to the ADCAL before the COVID-19 outbreak (0.18mm (95%CI:-0.07,0.46) versus 0.22mm (95%CI:-0.05,0.48), and (0.09mm (95%CI:-0.15,0.34) versus 0.14mm (95%CI:0.00,0.28), respectively). In children aged ≤9 years at study end, axial length at study end was 0.20 mm larger than axial length at baseline in the participants aged ≤9 years at baseline. Larger axial elongation during the study period was associated (multivariable analysis) with younger age (beta:-0.62;P<0.001), female sex (beta:0.21;P<0.001), longer study period (beta:0.22;P<0.001), and longer axial length at baseline (beta:0.28;P<0.001), and marginally, with less time spent outdoors (beta:-0.07;P = 0.06).ConclusionsThe COVID-19-related lockdown in the Russian city of Ufa was associated with a relatively minor increase in axial elongation, detected only in children aged <9.6 years.
