Unicolored phosphor-sensitized fluorescence for efficient and stable blue OLEDs.

ABSTRACT: Improving lifetimes and efficiencies of blue organic light-emitting diodes is clearly a scientific challenge. Towards solving this challenge, we propose a unicolored phosphor-sensitized fluorescence approach, with phosphorescent and fluorescent emitters tailored to preserve the initial color of phosphorescence. Using this approach, we design an efficient sky-blue light-emitting diode with radiative decay times in the submicrosecond regime. By changing the concentration of fluorescent emitter, we show that the lifetime is proportional to the reduction of the radiative decay time and tune the operational stability to lifetimes of up to 320 h (80% decay, initial luminance of 1000 cd/m²). Unicolored phosphor-sensitized fluorescence provides a clear path towards efficient and stable blue light-emitting diodes, helping to overcome the limitations of thermally activated delayed fluorescence.

Project description:Phosphorescent and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been developed to overcome the low efficiency of fluorescent OLEDs. However, device instability, originating from triplet excitons and polarons, limits blue OLED applications. Here, we develop a phosphor-sensitized TADF emission system with TADF emitters to achieve high efficiency and long operational lifetime. Peripheral carbazole moieties are introduced in conventional multi-resonance-type emitters containing one boron atom. The triplet exciton density of the TADF emitter is reduced by facilitating reverse intersystem crossing, and the Förster resonant energy transfer rate from phosphor sensitizer is enhanced by high absorption coefficient of the emitters. The emitter exhibited an operational lifetime of 72.9 hours with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinate y = 0.165, which was 6.6 times longer than those of devices using conventional TADF emitters.

Ultra-low power-consumption OLEDs via phosphor-assisted thermally-activated-delayed-fluorescence-sensitized narrowband emission.

Project description:The further success of OLED beyond conventional low-luminance display applications has been hampered by the low power efficiency (PE) at high luminance. Here, we demonstrate the strategic implementation of an exceptionally high-PE, high-luminance OLED using a phosphor-assisted thermally-activated-delayed-fluorescence (TADF)-sensitized narrowband emission. On the basis of a TADF sensitizing-host possessing a fast reverse intersystem crossing, an anti-aggregation-caused-quenching character and a good bipolar charge-transporting ability, this design achieves not only a 100% exciton radiative consumption with decay times mainly in the sub-microsecond regime to mitigate exciton annihilations for nearly roll-off-free external quantum efficiency, but also narrowband emission with both small energetic loss during energy transfer and resistive loss with increasing luminance. Consequently, besides a maximum PE of 187.7 lm/W, an exceptionally high critical maximum luminance (where a PE of 100 lm/W is maintained) of over 110,000 cd/m2 is achieved for the proof-of-the-concept device, nearly one-of-magnitude higher than the previous record.

Development of Red Exciplex for Efficient OLEDs by Employing a Phosphor as a Component.

Project description:Exciplexes are ideal candidates as effective thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. However, efficient orange and red TADF exciplexes have been reported seldomly, because their significant non-radiative (NR) decay of excited states lead to unavoidable energy loss. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to construct efficient red TADF exciplexes by introducing phosphor as one component. Due to the strong spin-orbit coupling of heavy metal (e.g., Ir, Pt, et al.) ion cores, the NR decays will be evidently decreased for both singlet and triplet excitons, reducing the undesired exciton waste. Moreover, compared with the conventional exciplexes, phosphorescence plays an important role for such novel exciplexes, further improving the exciton utilization. Based on this strategy, we fabricated a red exciplex containing 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris(benzene-3,1-diyl)tris(diphenylphosphine oxide) (PO-T2T) and tris(2-phenylpyridine) iridium(III) (Ir(ppy)3) as components and realize a red emission with a peak at 604 nm, a CIE coordinate of (0.55, 0.44), and a high maximum external quantum efficiency of 5% in organic light-emitting device. This efficiency is 2.6 times higher than that of the device based on the conventional red exciplex emitter, proving the superiority of our novel strategy to construct TADF exciplexes with phosphors.

Nanosecond-time-scale delayed fluorescence molecule for deep-blue OLEDs with small efficiency rolloff.

Project description:Aromatic organic deep-blue emitters that exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) can harvest all excitons in electrically generated singlets and triplets as light emission. However, blue TADF emitters generally have long exciton lifetimes, leading to severe efficiency decrease, i.e., rolloff, at high current density and luminance by exciton annihilations in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, we report a deep-blue TADF emitter employing simple molecular design, in which an activation energy as well as spin-orbit coupling between excited states with different spin multiplicities, were simultaneously controlled. An extremely fast exciton lifetime of 750 ns was realized in a donor-acceptor-type molecular structure without heavy metal elements. An OLED utilizing this TADF emitter displayed deep-blue electroluminescence (EL) with CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.14, 0.18) and a high maximum EL quantum efficiency of 20.7%. Further, the high maximum efficiency were retained to be 20.2% and 17.4% even at high luminance.

Pyridinyl-Carbazole Fragments Containing Host Materials for Efficient Green and Blue Phosphorescent OLEDs.

Project description:Pyridinyl-carbazole fragments containing low molar mass compounds as host derivatives H1 and H2 were synthesized, investigated, and used for the preparation of electro-phosphorescent organic light-emitting devices (PhOLEDs). The materials demonstrated high stability against thermal decomposition with the decomposition temperatures of 361-386 °C and were suitable for the preparation of thin amorphous and homogeneous layers with very high values of glass transition temperatures of 127-139 °C. It was determined that triplet energy values of the derivatives are, correspondingly, 2.82 eV for the derivative H1 and 2.81 eV for the host H2. The new derivatives were tested as hosts of emitting layers in blue, as well as in green phosphorescent OLEDs. The blue device with 15 wt.% of the iridium(III)[bis(4,6-difluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,C2']picolinate (FIrpic) emitter doping ratio in host material H2 exhibited the best overall characteristics with a power efficiency of 24.9 lm/W, a current efficiency of 23.9 cd/A, and high value of 10.3% of external quantum efficiency at 100 cd/m2. The most efficient green PhOLED with 10 wt% of Ir(ppy)3 {tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III)} in the H2 host showed a power efficiency of 34.1 lm/W, current efficiency of 33.9 cd/A, and a high value of 9.4% for external quantum efficiency at a high brightness of 1000 cd/m2, which is required for lighting applications. These characteristics were obtained in non-optimized PhOLEDs under an ordinary laboratory atmosphere and could be improved in the optimization process. The results demonstrate that some of the new host materials are very promising components for the development of efficient phosphorescent devices.

Project description:High-efficiency and stable deep-blue bottom-emitting organic light-emitting diodes with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage y coordinates (CIE y s) < 0.08 remain exclusive in the literature owing to the high excited-state energy of the emitters. Here, we propose the utilization of narrowband emitters to lower the excited-state energy for stable deep-blue devices by taking advantage of their high color purity. Two proof-of-concept deep-blue emitters with nitrogen-containing spiro-configured polycyclic frameworks are thereafter developed to introduce a multi-resonance effect for narrow emissions and sterically orthogonal configurations for alleviated molecular interactions. Both emitters show bright ultrapure deep-blue emissions with an extremely small full-width-at-half-maxima of only 18-19 nm, which can be maintained even in heavily doped films. Small CIE y s of 0.054 and 0.066 are therefore measured from the corresponding electroluminescence devices with peak energies of only 2.77 eV (448 nm) and 2.74 eV (453 nm), accounting for the remarkably long LT80s (lifetime to 80% of the initial luminance) of 18 900 and 43 470 hours at 100 cd m-2, respectively. Furthermore, by adopting a thermally activated delayed fluorescence sensitizer, impressive maximum external quantum efficiencies of 25% and 31% are recorded respectively, representing state-of-the-art performances for deep-blue devices.

Fluorescence Properties of Novel Multiresonant Indolocarbazole Derivatives for Deep-Blue OLEDs from Multiscale Computer Modelling.

Project description:Multiresonant fluorophores are a novel class of organic luminophores with a narrow emission spectrum. They can yield organic light-emitting devices, e.g., OLEDs, with high colour purity. In this study, we applied DFT and multiscale modelling to predict the electronic and optical properties of several novel derivatives of indolocarbazole pSFIAc, which had recently shown a high potential in deep-blue OLEDs. We found that the addition of phenyls to a certain position of the pSFIAc core can considerably increase the fluorescent rate, leaving other properties (HOMO, LUMO, lowest excited singlet and lowest triplet states' energies) virtually unaffected. This can improve the efficiency and stability of deep-blue organic light-emitting devices; the suggested phenyl-substituted indolocarbazoles have been shown to be compatible with two popular anthracene-based hosts. On the contrary, the addition of phenyls to another positions of the core is detrimental for optoelectronic properties. QM/MM and QM/EFP calculations yielded negligible inhomogeneous broadening of the emission spectrum of the studied luminophores when embedded as dopants in anthracene-based hosts, predicting high colour purity of the corresponding devices. On the basis of the obtained results, we selected one novel multiresonant indolocarbazole derivative that is most promising for organic light-emitting devices. We anticipate the revealed structure-property relationships will facilitate the rational design of efficient materials for organic (opto)electronics.

Efficient and stable sky-blue delayed fluorescence organic light-emitting diodes with CIE<sub>y</sub> below 0.4.

Project description:Organic light-emitting diodes utilizing thermally activated delayed fluorescence is a potential solution for achieving stable blue devices. Sky-blue devices (CIEy < 0.4) with high stability and high external quantum efficiency (>15%) at 1000 cd m-2 based on either delayed fluorescence or phosphorescence are still limited and very hard to achieve simultaneously. Here, we report the design and synthesis of a new thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitter, 3Ph2CzCzBN. A sky-blue device based on 3Ph2CzCzBN exhibits a high external quantum efficiency of 16.6% at 1000 cd m-2. The device shows a sky-blue electroluminescence of 482 nm and achieves Commission Internationale de l' Eclairage coordinates of (0.17, 0.36). The sky-blue device exhibits a superb LT90 of 38 h. This is the first demonstration of high-efficiency and stable sky-blue devices (CIEy < 0.4) based on delayed fluorescence, which represents an important advance in the field of blue organic light-emitting diode technology.

Efficient and stable single-doped white OLEDs using a palladium-based phosphorescent excimer.

Project description:A tetradentate Pd(ii) complex, Pd3O3, which exhibits highly efficient excimer emission is synthesized and characterized. Pd3O3 can achieve blue emission despite using phenyl-pyridine emissive ligands which have been a mainstay of stable green and red phosphorescent emitter designs, making Pd3O3 a good candidate for stable blue or white OLEDs. Pd3O3 exhibits strong and efficient phosphorescent excimer emission expanding the excimer based white OLEDs beyond the sole class of Pt complexes. Devices of Pd3O3 demonstrate peak external quantum efficiencies as high as 24.2% and power efficiencies of 67.9 Lm per W for warm white devices. Furthermore, Pd3O3 devices in a carefully designed stable structure achieved a device operational lifetime of nearly 3000 h at 1000 cd m-2 without any outcoupling enhancement while simultaneously achieving peak external quantum efficiencies of 27.3% and power efficiencies over 81 Lm per W.

Enhanced Emitting Dipole Orientation Based on Asymmetric Iridium(III) Complexes for Efficient Saturated-Blue Phosphorescent OLEDs.

Project description:Three novel asymmetric Ir(III) complexes have been rationally designed to optimize their emitting dipole orientations (EDO) and enhance light outcoupling in blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), thereby boosting their external quantum efficiency (EQE). Bulky electron-donating groups (EDGs), namely: carbazole (Cz), di-tert-butyl carbazole (tBuCz), and phenoxazine (Pxz) are incorporated into the tridentate dicarbene pincer chelate to induce high degree of packing anisotropy, simultaneously enhancing their photophysical properties. Angle-dependent photoluminescence (ADPL) measurements indicate increased horizontal transition dipole ratios of 0.89 and 0.90 for the Ir(III) complexes Cz-dfppy-CN and tBuCz-dfppy-CN, respectively. Analysis of the single crystal structure and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results revealed an inherent correlation between molecular aspect ratio and EDO. Utilizing the newly obtained emitters, the blue OLED devices demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving a maximum EQE of 30.7% at a Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate of (0.140, 0.148). Optical transfer matrix-based simulations confirmed a maximum outcoupling efficiency of 35% due to improved EDO. Finally, the tandem OLED and hyper-OLED devices exhibited a maximum EQE of 44.2% and 31.6%, respectively, together with good device stability. This rational molecular design provides straightforward guidelines to reach highly efficient and stable saturated blue emission.
