CoAl₂O₄/Kaoline Hybrid Pigment Prepared via Solid-Phase Method for Anticorrosion Application.

ABSTRACT: In this study, kaoline is incorporated to prepare CoAl₂O₄/kaoline hybrid pigments via traditional solid-state reaction, and the introduction of kaoline decreases the preparation temperature for formation of spinel CoAl₂O₄, and reduces the production cost of cobalt blue as well. More importantly, kaoline may participate in the crystallization of spinel CoAl₂O₄ during calcining process, and the hybrid pigments prepared using 8.1% Co₃O₄ and 81.5% kaoline features bright blue and good chemical resistance. Due to the synergistic effect between the sheet-like kaoline and the loaded CoAl₂O₄, the as-prepared CoAl₂O₄/kaoline hybrid pigments can be incorporated into epoxy paint system to obtain the high-performance blue anticorrosion coating, especially for acetic acid-salt fog corrosion.

Solid-solid phase transitions via melting in metals.

Project description:Observing solid-solid phase transitions in-situ with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution is a great challenge, and is often only possible via computer simulations or in model systems. Recently, a study of polymeric colloidal particles, where the particles mimic atoms, revealed an intermediate liquid state in the transition from one solid to another. While not yet observed there, this finding suggests that such phenomena may also occur in metals and alloys. Here we present experimental evidence for a solid-solid transition via the formation of a metastable liquid in a 'real' atomic system. We observe this transition in a bulk glass-forming metallic system in-situ using fast differential scanning calorimetry. We investigate the corresponding transformation kinetics and discuss the underlying thermodynamics. The mechanism is likely to be a feature of many metallic glasses and metals in general, and may provide further insight into phase transition theory.

Optimization of solid lipid nanoparticles prepared by a single emulsification-solvent evaporation method.

Project description:This data article contains the data related to the research article "Characterization, biorecognitive activity and stability of WGA grafted lipid nanostructures for the controlled delivery of rifampicin" (Pooja et al. 2015) [1]. In the present study, SLN were prepared by a single emulsification-solvent evaporation method and the various steps of SLN preparation are shown in a flow chart. The preparation of SLN was optimized for various formulation variables including type and quantity of lipid, surfactant, amount of co-surfactant and volume of organic phase. Similarly, effect of variables related to homogezation, sonication and stirring processes, on the size and surface potential of SLN was determined and optimized.

Multidimensional Hybrid Metal Phosphonate Coordination Networks as Synergistic Anticorrosion Coatings.

Project description:In the technologically important field of anticorrosion coatings, it is imperative to form well-defined and characterized films to protect the metal surface from corrosion. Phosphonate-based corrosion mitigation approaches are currently being exploited. Herein, the synergistic action of alkaline-earth metal ions and two carboxy-diphosphonates, PAIBA [N,N-bis(phosphonomethyl)-2-aminoisobutyric acid] and BPMGLY [N,N-bis(phosphonomethyl)glycine], is explored. Also, a family of four novel hybrid metal phosphonate materials is reported, Mg-PAIBA, Ca-PAIBA, Sr-PAIBA, and Sr-Na-PAIBA, whose topological analysis revealed a variety of underlying networks with the 6,10T9, unc, SP 1-periodic net (4,4)(0,2), and unique topologies. The synergistic metal/carboxy-diphosphonate blends were tested for their anticorrosion performance on carbon steel at preselected concentrations (0.1-1.0 mM) and pH values (4.0-6.0). The results showed an enhanced inhibitory performance in the presence of metal cations at higher concentrations. The inhibition of corrosion at pH 5.0 in the presence of BPMGLY, PAIBA, and their combination with Sr2+ was investigated in detail using electrochemical measurements. Enhanced inhibition was achieved with a 1:1 Sr2+/BPMGLY (or PAIBA) binary system. Polarization curves indicated that the system is a "mixed" inhibitor. This study widens the family of carboxyphosphonate coordination polymers, showing their potential as attractive hybrid coatings with anticorrosion performance.

Graphene/Carbon Dot Hybrid Thin Films Prepared by a Modified Langmuir-Schaefer Method.

Project description:The special electronic, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of graphene resulting from its 2D nature, as well as the ease of functionalizing it through a simple acid treatment, make graphene an ideal building block for the development of new hybrid nanostructures with well-defined dimensions and behavior. Such hybrids have great potential as active materials in applications such as gas storage, gas/liquid separation, photocatalysis, bioimaging, optoelectronics, and nanosensing. In this study, luminescent carbon dots (C-dots) were sandwiched between oxidized graphene sheets to form novel hybrid multilayer films. Our thin-film preparation approach combines self-assembly with the Langmuir-Schaefer deposition and uses graphene oxide nanosheets as template for grafting C-dots in a bidimensional array. Repeating the cycle results in a facile and low-cost layer-by-layer procedure for the formation of highly ordered hybrid multilayers, which were characterized by photoluminescence, UV-visible, X-ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopies, as well as X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy.

Extraction Improvement of the Bioactive Blue-Green Pigment "Marennine" from Diatom Haslea ostrearia's Blue Water: A Solid-Phase Method Based on Graphitic Matrices.

Project description:The compound "marennine" is a blue-green pigment produced by the benthic microalgae Haslea ostrearia, with pathogenicity reduction activities against some bacteria and promising potential as a natural pigment in seafood industries. After decades of research, the chemical family of this compound still remains unclear, mainly because structural studies were impaired by the presence of co-extracted compounds in marennine isolates. To improve the purity of marennine extract, we developed a novel extraction method using a graphitic stationary phase, which provides various advantages over the previous procedure using tandem ultrafiltration. Our method is faster, more versatile, provides a better crude yield (66%, compared to 57% for ultrafiltration) and is amenable to upscaling with continuous photobioreactor cultivation. Our goal was to take advantage of the modulable surface properties of the graphitic matrix by optimizing its interactions with marennine. As such, the effects of organic modifiers, pH and reducing agents were studied. With this improvement on marennine purification, we achieved altogether the isolation of a fucoidan-related, sulfated polysaccharide from blue water. Characterization of the polysaccharides fraction suggests that roughly half of UV-absorbing compounds could be isolated from the marennine crude extracts. The identification of sulfated polysaccharides could be a major breakthrough for marennine purification, providing targeted isolation techniques. Likewise, the added value of Haslea ostrearia and the role of polysaccharides in previous marennine chemical characterization and bioactivity studies remain to be determined.

Polyelectrolyte Complex Hollow Fiber Membranes Prepared via Aqueous Phase Separation.

Project description:Hollow fiber (HF) membrane geometry is the preferred choice for most commercial membrane operations. Such fibers are conventionally prepared via the non-solvent-induced phase separation technique, which heavily relies on hazardous and reprotoxic organic solvents such as N-methyl pyrrolidone. A more sustainable alternative, i.e., aqueous phase separation (APS), was introduced recently that utilizes water as a solvent and non-solvent for the production of polymeric membranes. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate the preparation of sustainable and functional HF membranes via the APS technique in a dry-jet wet spinning process. The dope solution comprising poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) at high pH along with an aqueous bore liquid is pushed through a single orifice spinneret into a low pH acetate buffer coagulation bath. Here, PEI becomes charged resulting in the formation of a polyelectrolyte complex with PSS. The compositions of the bore liquid and coagulation bath were systematically varied to study their effect on the structure and performance of the HF membranes. The microfiltration-type membranes (permeability ∼500 to 800 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1) with complete retention of emulsion droplets were obtained when the precipitation rate was slow. Increasing the concentration of the acetate buffer in the bath led to the increase in precipitation rate resulting in ultrafiltration-type membranes (permeability ∼12 to 15 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1) having molecular weight cut-offs in the range of ∼7.8-11.6 kDa. The research presented in this work confirms the versatility of APS and moves it another step closer to large-scale use.

Polyimide-Based PolyHIPEs Prepared via Pickering High Internal Phase Emulsions.

Project description:Pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) oligoimide particles and PMDA-ODA poly(amic acid) salt (PAAS) were synthesized and used as stabilizers to prepare oil-in-water Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs). The stability of the Pickering HIPEs was investigated by dispersion stability analysis. Polyimide-based polyHIPEs could be prepared through freeze-drying and subsequent thermal imidization of the Pickering HIPEs. The characteristics of the polyHIPEs, including their morphology, porosity, thermal decomposition temperature, and compression modulus, were investigated. The thermal decomposition temperature (T10) of the polyHIPEs was very high (>530 °C), and their porosity was as high as 92%. The polyimide-based polyHIPEs have the potential to be used in high-temperature environments.

Biomimetic Silica Nanoparticles Prepared by a Combination of Solid-Phase Imprinting and Ostwald Ripening.

Project description:Herein we describe the preparation of molecularly imprinted silica nanoparticles by Ostwald ripening in the presence of molecular templates immobilised on glass beads (the solid-phase). To achieve this, a seed material (12 nm diameter silica nanoparticles) was incubated in phosphate buffer in the presence of the solid-phase. Phosphate ions act as a catalyst in the ripening process which is driven by differences in surface energy between particles of different size, leading to the preferential growth of larger particles. Material deposited in the vicinity of template molecules results in the formation of sol-gel molecular imprints after around 2 hours. Selective washing and elution allows the higher affinity nanoparticles to be isolated. Unlike other strategies commonly used to prepare imprinted silica nanoparticles this approach is extremely simple in nature and can be performed under physiological conditions, making it suitable for imprinting whole proteins and other biomacromolecules in their native conformations. We have demonstrated the generic nature of this method by preparing imprinted silica nanoparticles against targets of varying molecular mass (melamine, vancomycin and trypsin). Binding to the imprinted particles was demonstrated in an immunoassay (ELISA) format in buffer and complex media (milk or blood plasma) with sub-nM detection ability.

Solid-state nitrogen-doped carbon nanoparticles with tunable emission prepared by a microwave-assisted method.

Project description:Tunable emissive solid-state carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) have been successfully synthesized by a facile synthesis through microwave irradiation. Modulating microwave interaction with the sample to generate abrupt localized heating is a long-term challenge to tailor the photoluminescence properties of CNPs. This study systematically revealed that the sample temperature through microwave irradiation plays a crucial role in controlling the photoluminescence properties over other reaction conditions, such as irradiation time and microwave duty cycle. When the sample temperature reached 155 °C in less than three minutes, the CNP sample exhibited a green-yellowish emission with the highest quantum yield (QY) of 14.6%. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) study revealed that the tunable photoluminescence properties of the CNPs can possibly be ascribed to their nitrogen concentrations, which were dictated by the sample temperature during irradiation. This study opens up a promising route for the well-controlled synthesis of luminescent CNPs through microwave irradiation.

Establishment and application of a solid-phase blocking ELISA method for detection of antibodies against classical swine fever virus.

Project description:BackgroundClassical swine fever (CSF) is a severe infectious disease of pigs that causes significant economic losses to the swine industry.ObjectivesThis study developed a solid-phase blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (spbELISA) method for the specific detection of antibodies against the CSF virus (CSFV) in porcine serum samples.MethodsA spbELISA method was developed based on the recombinant E2 expressed in Escherichia coli. The specificity of this established spbELISA method was evaluated using reference serum samples positive for antibodies against other common infectious diseases. The stability and sensitivity were evaluated using an accelerated thermostability test.ResultsThe spbELISA successfully detected the antibody levels in swine vaccinated with the C-strain of CSFV. In addition, the detection ability of spbELISA for CSFV antibodies was compared with that of other commercial ELISA kits and validated using an indirect immunofluorescence assay. The results suggested that the spbELISA provides an alternative, stable, and rapid serological detection method suitable for the large-scale screening of CSFV serum antibodies.ConclusionsThe spbELISA has practical applications in assessing the vaccination status of large pig herds.
