Data on thermal sensation, perception and microclimatic parameters in a city with Mediterranean climate.

ABSTRACT: This data article presents the data collected through an extensive research work conducted in urban areas in the city of Athens (Greece) during the period 2010-2012. Data concerns 2287 questionnaires and microclimatic data collected through interviews to the visitors of the examined areas with parallel monitoring of the urban microclimatic characteristics. The field surveys carried out occasionally throughout the year covering as much as possible the different seasons under Mediterranean climate conditions. These data are related to the research articles with the titles: Seasonal differences in thermal sensation in the outdoor urban environment of Mediterranean climates-the example of Athens, Greece (Tseliou et al., 2017) and Outdoor thermal sensation in a Mediterranean climate (Athens): The effect of selected microclimatic parameters (Tseliou et al., 2016).

Project description:This paper describes two sets of data on multiple body parameters of five participants, on microclimatic variables, and on self-reported assessment of thermal responses, all monitored in the same outdoor urban environment. Data were collected during three seasons, summer, autumn and winter 2010-2011, in the city of Athens, Greece. Part of these data, collected during the summer period, is related to the research article entitled "Case study of skin temperature and thermal perception in a hot outdoor environment." (Pantavou et al., 2014) [1].

Redefining human thermal perception for the Mediterranean climates

Project description:SARS-COV-2 focuses on the comfort of outdoor spaces in large cities. Creating comfortable spaces for children and improving the habitability of cities are essential today. Climate change is real, and its main adverse effects are already being felt: Urban Heat Island and recurring heat waves. Numerous comfort models predict the state of the occupants of space. However, these comfort indices need to be validated in Mediterranean climates. This study tests the COMFA comfort model in a real case in Seville. Thermal monitoring campaigns are carried out during the intermediate seasons of warm weather in a primary school. The main objective is to know the effect of the urban heat island and the climatic conditions to which the person is subjected. For this purpose, fixed, semi-mobile, and mobile sensors were used to carry out surveys. Theoretical predictions provided by the COMFA thermal comfort model were compared with the subjective responses of the occupants. 65% of the model's results predict what people feel and tend to overestimate the real thermal perception, especially in warm climates such as Seville. These results can be helpful to redefine thermal comfort for climate change mitigation solutions assessment in public spaces.

Data on verbal expressions for thermal sensation and comfort in the Greek language.

Project description:This article presents data collected during a web-based survey on expressions used to describe thermal sensation and comfort in the Greek language. The survey used a structured questionnaire and delivered through Google Forms. The survey was promoted through social networks and conducted in spring 2019. The data presented herein comprise of the participants' responses to the questionnaire. A total of 359 questionnaires were completed. The participants were Greek speakers, older than 12, with at least a basic knowledge of the English language. The participants were asked to: (a) select the most appropriate translation, from English to Greek, of the nine-point ISO 10551 scale of perceptual judgment on personal thermal state, (b) formulate five, seven and nine-point thermal sensation scales, (c) report the category of the thermal sensation scale that signifies thermal comfort and (d) to assess the relative distances between the thermal sensation categories of the five, seven and nine-point thermal sensation scales. For the translation of the ISO 10551, the respondents were allowed to choose from a list of 30 Greek wordings. The data have been analysed in the research article entitled "Native influences on the construction of thermal sensation scales" [1].

Data on photovoltaic power forecasting models for Mediterranean climate.

Project description:The weather data have a relevant impact on the photovoltaic (PV) power forecast, furthermore the PV power prediction methods need the historical data as input. The data presented in this article concern measured values of ambient temperature, module temperature, solar radiation in a Mediterranean climate. Hourly samples of the PV output power of 960kWP system located in Southern Italy were supplied for more 500 days. The data sets, given in , were used in DOI: 10.1016/j.enconman.2015.04.078, M.G. De Giorgi, P.M. Congedo, M. Malvoni, D. Laforgia (2015) [1] to compare Artificial Neural Networks and Least Square Support Vector Machines. Thermal contrast enhancement predicts paradoxical heat sensation.

Project description:Paradoxical Heat Sensation (PHS) is the remarkable feeling of warmth or heat pain while the skin is cooling. Despite its initial documentation over 100 years ago, a unified explanation for this perplexing experience remains elusive. Here we apply contrast enhancement principles, known for their instrumental role in understanding visual illusions, to the domain of thermosensation. Contrast enhancement describes the amplification of two contrasting visual features, such as the enhanced perception of an edge between a light and dark bar. In thermosensation, this encompasses an enhancement of the difference between sequential warming and cooling of the skin, and is defined as the normalised difference between successive temporal warm and cold temperatures. Remarkably, thermal contrast predicts the occurrence of PHS. Our findings reveal compelling evidence supporting the role of thermal contrast in the generation of PHS, shedding light on its underlying mechanism and offering a framework for broader encoding principles in thermosensation and pain.

Determination of thermal sensation levels for Koreans based on perceived temperature and climate chamber experiments with hot and humid settings.

Project description:People perceive thermal sensation differently despite the same temperature value of thermal comfort index depending on various factors such as climate, culture, and physiological characteristics. The use of the thermal comfort index without optimization may lead to biases in assessment of thermal stress and sensation. This study aims to derive the perceived temperature (PT) ranges of thermal sensation levels related to heat stress for Koreans. The experiments were designed using a controlled environmental chamber to derive the PT ranges and were performed with subjects who are residents of Seoul, South Korea. The experiments were carried out in the summers of 2017 and 2018, and the thermal sensation votes were surveyed from 19 subjects whose mean age, height, weight, and body mass index were 22.5 years, 171 cm, 72 kg, and 23 kg⋅m-2, respectively. The derived PT ranges for Koreans led to a better performance than the reference PT ranges for Germans based on the results of validation. The thresholds of 'Warm,' 'Hot,' and 'Very hot' thermal sensation classes for Koreans were 28 °C, 36 °C, and 43 °C, respectively: higher than those for Germans. The results indicate that Koreans may have higher heat resistance or lower heat sensitivity than Germans.

TRPV1-lineage neurons are required for thermal sensation.

Project description:The ion-channel TRPV1 is believed to be a major sensor of noxious heat, but surprisingly animals lacking TRPV1 still display marked responses to elevated temperature. In this study, we explored the role of TRPV1-expressing neurons in somatosensation by generating mice wherein this lineage of cells was selectively labelled or ablated. Our data show that TRPV1 is an embryonic marker of many nociceptors including all TRPV1- and TRPM8-neurons as well as many Mrg-expressing neurons. Mutant mice lacking these cells are completely insensitive to hot or cold but in marked contrast retain normal touch and mechanical pain sensation. These animals also exhibit defective body temperature control and lose both itch and pain reactions to potent chemical mediators. Together with previous cell ablation studies, our results define and delimit the roles of TRPV1- and TRPM8-neurons in thermosensation, thermoregulation and nociception, thus significantly extending the concept of labelled lines in somatosensory coding.

Spatial integration during active tactile sensation drives orientation perception.

Project description:Active haptic sensation is critical for object identification, but its neural circuit basis is poorly understood. We combined optogenetics, two-photon imaging, and high-speed behavioral tracking in mice solving a whisker-based object orientation discrimination task. We found that orientation discrimination required animals to summate input from multiple whiskers specifically along the whisker arc. Animals discriminated the orientation of the stimulus per se as their performance was invariant to the location of the presented stimulus. Populations of barrel cortex neurons summated across whiskers to encode each orientation. Finally, acute optogenetic inactivation of the barrel cortex and cell-type-specific optogenetic suppression of layer 4 excitatory neurons degraded performance, implying that infragranular layers alone are not sufficient to solve the task. These data suggest that spatial summation over an active haptic array generates representations of an object's orientation, which may facilitate encoding of complex three-dimensional objects during active exploration.

Thermal environment and indices: an analysis for effectiveness in operational weather applications in a Mediterranean city (Athens, Greece).

Project description:The large number of thermal indices introduced in the literature poses a challenge to identify the appropriate one for a given application. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of widely used indices in quantifying the thermal environment for operational weather applications within a Mediterranean climate. Eight indices (six simple and two thermo-physiological) were considered, i.e., apparent temperature, heat index, humidex, net effective temperature (NET), physiologically equivalent temperature (PET), universal thermal climate index (UTCI), wet-bulb globe temperature, and wind chill temperature. They were estimated using hourly meteorological data between 2010 and 2021, recorded in 15 stations from the Automatic Weather Station Network of the National Observatory of Athens in the Athens metropolitan area, Greece. The statistical analysis focused on examining indices' sensitivity to variations of the thermal environment. NET, PET, and UTCI were evaluated as suitable for operational use, assessing both cool and warm environments, and extending their estimations to the entire range of their assessment scales. NET and PET often tended to classify thermal perception in the negative categories of their scales, with 63% of NET and 56% of PET estimations falling within the range of cool/slightly cool to very cold. UTCI estimations in the negative categories accounted for 25.8% (p < 0.001), while most estimations were classified in the neutral category (53.1%). The common occasions of extreme warm conditions in terms of both air temperature (Tair) and NET was 77.7%, Tair and UTCI 64.4%, and Tair and PET 33.6% (p < 0.001). According to the indices considered and the method followed, NET and UTCI satisfied sufficiently the requirements for operational use in the climate conditions of the Mediterranean climate.

Data on solar sunburning ultraviolet (UVB) radiation at an urban Mediterranean climate.

Project description:This article describes data on the intensity of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation collected during field questionnaire-based surveys in Athens, Greece. The surveys were conducted over 11 days of July and October 2010 at three different urban, outdoor sites. A total of 1104 interviews were conducted. The participants were asked to report whether they felt they got a sunburn at the moment of the interview. Questions related to personal characteristics including skin type and exposure time (visit duration at the interview site) were also included in the questionnaire.
