A Fluorescence Sensing Determination of 2, 4, 6-Trinitrophenol Based on Cationic Water-Soluble Pillar[6]arene Graphene Nanocomposite.

ABSTRACT: We describe a selective and sensitive fluorescence platform for the detection of trinitrophenol (TNP) based on competitive host⁻guest recognition between pyridine-functionalized pillar[6]arene (PCP6) and a probe (acridine orange, AO) that used PCP6-functionalized reduced graphene (PCP6-rGO) as the receptor. TNP is an electron-deficient and negative molecule, which is captured by PCP6 via electrostatic interactions and π⁻π interactions. Therefore, a selective and sensitive fluorescence probe for TNP detection is developed. It has a low detection limit of 0.0035 μM (S/N = 3) and a wider linear response of 0.01⁻5.0 and 5.0⁻125.0 for TNP. The sensing platform is also used to test TNP in two water and soil samples with satisfying results. This suggests that this approach has potential applications for the determination of TNP.

Ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of methyl parathion pesticide based on cationic water-soluble pillar[5]arene and reduced graphene nanocomposite.

Project description:We report a rapid, sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on pillar[5]arene (CP5) reduced graphene (rGO) nanohybrid-modified glassy carbon electrode CP5-rGO/GCE for the trace detection of methyl parathion (MP) by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) for the first time. Compared to beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-functionalized reduced graphene (rGO)-modified GCE β-CD-rGO/GCE, the proposed CP5-rGO/GCE sensor exhibits excellent electrochemical catalytic activity, rapid response, high sensitivity, good reproducibility and anti-interference ability towards MP. The recognition mechanism of β-CD/MP and CP5/MP was studied by 1H NMR. The results indicate a higher supramolecular recognition capability between CP5 and MP compared to that between β-CD and MP. The β-CD-rGO and CP5-rGO nano-composites were prepared via a wet chemistry approach. The resulting nano-composites have been characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), charge transfer resistance (R ct) and zeta potential. The CP5-rGO/GCE combines the merits of CP5 and rGO, and is used for quantitative detection of MP. It has a low detection limit of 0.0003 μM (S/N = 3) and a linear response range of 0.001-150 μM for MP. This method has been used to detect MP in soil and waste water samples with satisfactory results. This study provides a promising electrochemical sensing platform and is a promising tool for the rapid, facile and sensitive analysis of MP.

Novel Competitive Fluorescence Sensing Platform for L-carnitine Based on Cationic Pillar[5]Arene Modified Gold Nanoparticles.

Project description:Supramolecular host-guest interaction and sensing between cationic pillar[5]arenes (CP5) and L-carnitine were developed by the competitive host-guest recognition for the first time. The fluorescence sensing platform was constructed by CP5 functionalized Au nanoparticles (CP5@Au-NPs) as receptor and probe (rhodamine 123, R123), which shown high sensitivity and selectivity for L-carnitine detection. Due to the negative charge and molecular size properties of L-carnitine, it can be highly captured by the CP5 via electrostatic interactions and hydrophobic interactions. The host-guest mechanism between PP5 and L-carnitine was studied by ¹H NMR and molecular docking, indicating that more affinity binding force of CP5 with L-carnitine. Therefore, a selective and sensitive fluorescent method was developed. It has a linear response of 0.1⁻2.0 and 2.0⁻25.0 μM and a detection limit of 0.067 μM (S/N = 3). The fluorescent sensing platform was also used to detect L-carnitine in human serum and milk samples, which provided potential applications for the detection of drugs abuse and had path for guarding a serious food safety issues.

A Water-Soluble Leggero Pillar[5]arene.

Project description:The study of aqueous-phase molecular recognition of artificial receptors is one of the frontiers in supramolecular chemistry since most biochemical processes and reactions take place in an aqueous medium and heavily rely on it. In this work, a water-soluble version of leggero pillar[5]arene bearing eight positively charged pyridinium moieties (CWP[5]L) was designed and synthesized, which exhibited good binding affinities with certain aliphatic sulfonate species in aqueous solutions. Significantly, control experiments demonstrate that the guest binding performance of CWP[5]L is superior to its counterpart water-soluble macrocyclic receptor in traditional pillararenes.

Preparation and Characterization of Cationic Water-Soluble Pillar[5]arene-Modified Zeolite for Adsorption of Methyl Orange.

Project description:A novel quaternary cationic pillar[5]arene-modified zeolite (WPA5/zeolite) was prepared via charge interaction between the cationic WPA5 and natural zeolite and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The effects of zeolite particle size, WPA5 concentration, adsorption time, initial concentration, and pH on the removal of methyl orange (MO) were studied. The SEM and XRD results revealed a strong interaction between WPA5 and natural zeolite, and the modified composites showed novel microscopic morphology and structural properties. TG analysis indicated excellent thermal stability of the composite. MO was removed via electrostatic adsorption, and the removal efficiency was 84% at an initial concentration of 100 mg/L. Increase in the initial dye concentration enhanced the adsorption capacity of WPA5/zeolite and decreased the removal of MO. Based on the adsorption kinetics, the pseudo-second-order model (R 2 = 0.998) described the kinetic behavior of MO on WPA5/zeolite. In addition, UV and fluorescence spectra revealed that MO and WPA5 are complexed by a 1:1 complex ratio, and the binding constant between them was 12 595 L·mol-1. NMR and molecular docking also verified their interaction. Therefore, the potential application of the prepared composite includes removal of organic anionic dyes.

The Detection of Food Additives Using a Fluorescence Indicator Based on 6- p-Toluidinylnaphthalence-2-sulfonate and Cationic Pillar[6]arene.

Project description:The current study investigated host-guest complexation in 6-p-toluidinylnaphthalene-2-sulfonate (TNS), a fluorescence probe used to investigate hydrophobic regions that contain the water-soluble cationic pillar[6]arene (CP6). After complexation with CP6, the fluorescence intensity of TNS was significantly increased. The decreases in the fluorescence intensity of the TNS•CP6 complex when phenolic food-additives are added have been used in indicator displacement assays to detect food additives in the water.

Facile One-Step Electrodeposition Preparation of Cationic Pillar[6]arene-Modified Graphene Films on Glassy Carbon Electrodes for Enhanced Electrochemical Performance.

Project description:In the present work, we have developed a facile one-step route for preparing electrochemically reduced graphene oxide-cationic pillar[6]arene (ErGO-CP6) nanocomposite films on glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) directly from graphene oxide-cationic pillar[6]arene (GO-CP6) colloidal solution by using a pulsed electrodeposition technique. The electrocatalytic activity of ErGO-CP6 was examined by studying the oxidations of five purine bases [adenine (A), guanine (G), xanthine (X), hypoxanthine (HX), and uric acid (UA)]. It enhanced the oxidation currents of A, G, X, HX, and UA when compared to unmodified ErGO films and bare GCE, which is considered to be the synergetic effects of the graphene (excellent electrical properties and large surface area) and CP6 molecules (high inclusion complexation and enrichment capability).

Direct electrodeposition of cationic pillar[6]arene-modified graphene oxide composite films and their host-guest inclusions for enhanced electrochemical performance.

Project description:In the present work, electrochemically reduced graphene oxide-cationic pillar[6]arene (ErGO-CP6) composite films on glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) were prepared directly from graphene oxide-cationic pillar[6]arene (GO-CP6) dispersions by a facile one-step pulsed electrodeposition technique. The preparation of GO-CP6 and its subsequent electrochemical reduction were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy (UV-vis), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM result reveals that ErGO-CP6 could form a homogeneous film when GO-CP6 was electrodeposited on the surface of a GCE. Furthermore, Raman and XPS results confirm the removal of oxygen-containing functional groups present on the GO-CP6 surface after electrochemical reduction. Electrochemical results reveal that ErGO-CP6 films could show much higher electrochemical response to theophylline (TP), ascorbic acid (AA), acetaminophen (APAP), and folic acid (FA) than unmodified ErGO films and bare GCE, which is considered to be the synergistic effect of the graphene (excellent electrical properties and large surface area) and CP6 molecules (high inclusion complexation and enrichment capability).

Supramolecular exfoliation of layer silicate clay by novel cationic pillar[5]arene intercalants.

Project description:Clays are multi-layered inorganic materials that can be used to prepare nanocomposite fillers. Because the multi-layered structure is thermodynamically stable, it is difficult to change a multi-layered material into single layers to improve its dispersity. Previously, clays were modified with dodecylammonium cations to promote complexation with nylon 6, nylon 66, polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, and polycaprolactone to increase the mechanical strength (and/or thermal stability) of the composite material; however, complete exfoliation could not be achieved in these composites. In this study, pillar[5]arenes are synthesized and functionalized with ten cationic substituents as novel intercalants for modifying bentonite clay, which is a multi-layered metal-cation-containing silicate. The pillar[5]arenes exfoliate the clay by forming polyrotaxanes with poly(ethylene glycol) through host-guest interactions.

Carboxylato-Pillar[6]arene-Based Fluorescent Indicator Displacement Assays for Caffeine Sensing.

Project description:In the present work, we have developed a new indicator displacement system based on pillararene for anionic water-soluble carboxylato pillar [6] arene (WP6) and aromatic fluorescent dye safranine T (ST). A large fluorescence enhancement and colour change of ST were observed after complexation with electron-rich cavity in WP6 because of host-guest twisted intramolecular charge-transfer interactions. The constructed pillararene-indicator displacement system can be applied for caffeine selective detection in water.

Cationic Pillar[6]arene Induces Cell Apoptosis by Inhibiting Protein Tyrosine Phosphorylation Via Host-Guest Recognition.

Project description:We reported for the first time that cationic pillar[6]arene (cPA6) could tightly bind to peptide polymer (MW~20-50 kDa), an artificial substrate for tyrosine (Tyr) phosphorylation, and efficiently inhibit Tyr protein phosphorylation through host-guest recognition. We synthesized a nanocomposite of black phosphorus nanosheets loaded with cPA6 (BPNS@cPA6) to explore the effect of cPA6 on cells. BPNS@cPA6 was able to enter HepG2 cells, induced apoptosis, and inhibited cell proliferation by reducing the level of Tyr phosphorylation. Furthermore, BPNS@cPA6 showed a stronger ability of inhibiting cell proliferation in tumor cells than in normal cells. Our results revealed the supramolecular modulation of enzymatic Tyr phosphorylation by the host-guest recognition of cPA6.
