Single-step isolation of carbon nanotubes with narrow-band light emission characteristics.

ABSTRACT: Lack of necessary degree of control over carbon nanotube (CNT) structure has remained a major impediment factor for making significant advances using this material since it was discovered. Recently, a wide range of promising sorting methods emerged as an antidote to this problem, all of which unfortunately have a multistep nature. Here we report that desired type of CNTs can be targeted and isolated in a single step using modified aqueous two-phase extraction. We achieve this by introducing hydration modulating agents, which are able to tune the arrangement of surfactants on their surface, and hence make selected CNTs highly hydrophobic or hydrophilic. This allows for separation of minor chiral species from the CNT mixture with up to 99.7 ± 0.02% selectivity without the need to carry out any unnecessary iterations. Interestingly, our strategy is also able to enrich the optical emission from CNTs under selected conditions.

Growth of semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes with a narrow band-gap distribution.

Project description:The growth of high-quality semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes with a narrow band-gap distribution is crucial for the fabrication of high-performance electronic devices. However, the single-wall carbon nanotubes grown from traditional metal catalysts usually have diversified structures and properties. Here we design and prepare an acorn-like, partially carbon-coated cobalt nanoparticle catalyst with a uniform size and structure by the thermal reduction of a [Co(CN)6](3-) precursor adsorbed on a self-assembled block copolymer nanodomain. The inner cobalt nanoparticle functions as active catalytic phase for carbon nanotube growth, whereas the outer carbon layer prevents the aggregation of cobalt nanoparticles and ensures a perpendicular growth mode. The grown single-wall carbon nanotubes have a very narrow diameter distribution centred at 1.7 nm and a high semiconducting content of >95%. These semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes have a very small band-gap difference of ∼0.08 eV and show excellent thin-film transistor performance.

Efficient Selective Sorting of Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes Using Ultra-Narrow-Band-Gap Polymers.

Project description:Conjugated polymers with narrow band gaps are particularly useful for sorting and discriminating semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNT) due to the low charge carrier injection barrier for transport. In this paper, we report two newly synthesized narrow-band-gap conjugated polymers (PNDITEG-TVT and PNDIC8TEG-TVT) based on naphthalene diimide (NDI) and thienylennevinylene (TVT) building blocks, decorated with different polar side chains that can be used for dispersing and discriminating s-SWCNT. Compared with the mid-band-gap conjugated polymer PNDITEG-AH, which is composed of naphthalene diimide (NDI) and head-to-head bithiophene building blocks, the addition of a vinylene linker eliminates the steric congestion present in head-to-head bithiophene, which promotes backbone planarity, extending the π-conjugation length and narrowing the band gap. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that inserting a vinylene group in a head-to-head bithiophene efficiently lifts the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level (-5.60 eV for PNDITEG-AH, -5.02 eV for PNDITEG-TVT, and -5.09 eV for PNDIC8TEG-TVT). All three polymers are able to select for s-SWCNT, as evidenced by the sharp transitions in the absorption spectra. Field-effect transistors (FETs) fabricated with the polymer:SWCNT inks display p-dominant properties, with higher hole mobilities when using the NDI-TVT polymers as compared with PNDITEG-AH (0.6 cm2 V-1 s-1 for HiPCO:PNDITEG-AH, 1.5 cm2 V-1 s-1 for HiPCO:PNDITEG-TVT, and 2.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 for HiPCO:PNDIC8TEG-TVT). This improvement is due to the better alignment of the HOMO level of PNDITEG-TVT and PNDIC8TEG-TVT with that of the dominant SWCNT specie.

Water-ion permselectivity of narrow-diameter carbon nanotubes.

Project description:Carbon nanotube (CNT) pores, which mimic the structure of the aquaporin channels, support extremely high water transport rates that make them strong candidates for building artificial water channels and high-performance membranes. Here, we measure water and ion permeation through 0.8-nm-diameter CNT porins (CNTPs)-short CNT segments embedded in lipid membranes-under optimized experimental conditions. Measured activation energy of water transport through the CNTPs agrees with the barrier values typical for single-file water transport. Well-tempered metadynamics simulations of water transport in CNTPs also report similar activation energy values and provide molecular-scale details of the mechanism for water entry into these channels. CNTPs strongly reject chloride ions and show water-salt permselectivity values comparable to those of commercial desalination membranes.

Anomalous water transport in narrow-diameter carbon nanotubes.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) mimicking the structure of aquaporins support fast water transport, making them strong candidates for building next-generation high-performance membranes for water treatment. The diffusion and transport behavior of water through CNTs or nanoporous graphene can be fundamentally different from those of bulk water through a macroscopic tube. To date, the nanotube-length-dependent physical transport behavior of water is still largely unexplored. Herein, on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we show that the flow rate of water through 0.83-nm-diameter (6,6) and 0.96-nm-diameter (7,7) CNTs exhibits anomalous transport behavior, whereby the flow rate increases markedly first and then either slowly decreases or changes slightly as the CNT length l increases. The critical range of l for the flow-rate transition is 0.37 to 0.5 nm. This anomalous water transport behavior is attributed to the l-dependent mechanical stability of the transient hydrogen-bonding chain that connects water molecules inside and outside the CNTs and bypasses the CNT orifice. The results unveil a microscopic mechanism governing water transport through subnanometer tubes, which has important implications for nanofluidic manipulation.

Band gap opening of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes via noncovalent symmetry breaking.

Project description:Covalent bonding interactions determine the energy-momentum (E-k) dispersion (band structure) of solid-state materials. Here, we show that noncovalent interactions can modulate the E-k dispersion near the Fermi level of a low-dimensional nanoscale conductor. We demonstrate that low energy band gaps may be opened in metallic carbon nanotubes through polymer wrapping of the nanotube surface at fixed helical periodicity. Electronic spectral, chiro-optic, potentiometric, electronic device, and work function data corroborate that the magnitude of band gap opening depends on the nature of the polymer electronic structure. Polymer dewrapping reverses the conducting-to-semiconducting phase transition, restoring the native metallic carbon nanotube electronic structure. These results address a long-standing challenge to develop carbon nanotube electronic structures that are not realized through disruption of π conjugation, and establish a roadmap for designing and tuning specialized semiconductors that feature band gaps on the order of a few hundred meV.

Long-Term Stable Thermal Emission Modulator Based on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:Dynamic control of a material's thermal emission could enable many emerging applications, such as thermal camouflage and infrared (IR) display. Low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials have shown great potential in these applications because of their tuneability in charge density via static gating or ionic intercalation. Herein, a thermal emission modulator based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is realized by ionic gating. The Fermi energy of the SWCNTs is shifted via the adsorption of ions on the surface, and the highest emissivity is observed at the neutral state while both P-type and N-type SWCNTs have a reduced emissivity. An emissivity modulation range is achieved approximately from 0.45 to 0.95 within the electrochemical window of the used ionic liquid. Thermal camouflage and IR display applications are then demonstrated by utilizing the tuneable thermal emissivity of the fabricated SWNCT films. More importantly, a single-layer structure allows effective dynamic control purely by static gating, without involving any ion interaction process that may cause structural damage, as observed in graphene and multi-walled nanotubes. Therefore, the SWCNT-based IR modulators exhibit long-term stability, with nearly identical modulation range and response time after 6000 dynamic tuning cycles, indicating great potential for practical applications.

Single-step extraction of small-diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes in the presence of riboflavin

Project description:We propose a novel approach to disperse and extract small-diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using an aqueous solution of riboflavin and Sephacryl gel. The extraction of small-diameter semiconducting SWCNTs was observed, regardless of the initial diameter distribution of the SWCNTs. Dispersion of SWCNTs occurs due to the adsorption of π-conjugated isoalloxazine moieties on the surface of small-diameter nanotubes and interactions between hydroxy groups of ribityl chains with water. During the SWCNT extraction, specific adsorption of riboflavin to SWCNTs leads to the minimization of interactions between the SWCNTs and gel media. Our experimental findings are supported by ab initio calculations demonstrating the impact of the riboflavin wrapping pattern around the SWCNTs on their interaction with the allyl dextran gel.

Narrow-band UVB phototherapy for psoriasis

Project description:Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory and hyperproliferative immune-mediated skin disorder. Narrow-band UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy is a convenient first-line treatment of psoriasis, though the mechanisms underlying its efficacy have not been completely elucidated. In order to improve our understanding of NB-UVB phototherapy, gene expression profiling was used to characterize gene expression in lesional epidermis from psoriasis patients undergoing NB-UVB phototherapy. Increased expression of melanogenesis pathway genes was observed to be the earliest response. At the end of treatment, genes involved in diverse biological processes were affected, such as pigmentation, cell adhesion, ectodermal development and metabolism. The relationship between gene expression and treatment outcome was further studied using Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA). Gene ontology analysis showed that genes responding to phototherapy and highly correlated to treatment outcome were involved in oxidation reduction, growth and mitochondria organization. In particular SPATA18, a key regulator of mitochondria quality, was found to be significantly downregulated in psoriasis, and its upregulation following phototherapy was required for optimal clinical improvement. Our data suggest that oxidation reduction is a critical event for the resolution of psoriatic plaques.

A one-step route to solubilised, purified or functionalised single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Project description:Reductive dissolution is a promising processing route for single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) that avoids the damage caused by ultrasonication and aggressive oxidation whilst simultaneously allowing access to a wealth of SWCNT functionalisation reactions. Here, reductive dissolution has been simplified to a single one-pot reaction through the use of sodium naphthalide in dimethylacetamide allowing direct synthesis of SWCNT Na+ solutions. Gram quantities of SWCNTs can be dissolved at concentrations over 2 mg mL-1. These reduced SWCNT solutions can easily be functionalised through the addition of alkyl halides; reducing steric bulk of the grafting moiety and increasing polarisability of the leaving group increases the extent of functionalisation. An optimised absolute sodium concentration of 25 mM is shown to be more important than carbon to metal ratio in determining the maximum degree of functionalisation. This novel dissolution system can be modified for use as a non-destructive purification route for raw SWCNT powder by adjusting the degree of charging to dissolve carbonaceous impurities, catalyst particles and defective material, before processing the remaining SWCNTs.

Experimental determination of excitonic band structures of single-walled carbon nanotubes using circular dichroism spectra.

Project description:Experimental band structure analyses of single-walled carbon nanotubes have not yet been reported, to the best of our knowledge, except for a limited number of reports using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate the experimental determination of the excitonic band structures of single-chirality single-walled carbon nanotubes using their circular dichroism spectra. In this analysis, we use gel column chromatography combining overloading selective adsorption with stepwise elution to separate 12 different single-chirality enantiomers. Our samples show higher circular dichroism intensities than the highest values reported in previous works, indicating their high enantiomeric purity. Excitonic band structure analysis is performed by assigning all observed Eii and Eij optical transitions in the circular dichroism spectra. The results reproduce the asymmetric structures of the valence and conduction bands predicted by density functional theory. Finally, we demonstrate that an extended empirical formula can estimate Eij optical transition energies for any (n,m) species.
