Ionic organic cage-encapsulating phase-transferable metal clusters.

ABSTRACT: Exploration of metal clusters (MCs) adaptive to both aqueous and oil phases without disturbing their size is promising for a broad scope of applications. The state-of-the-art approach via ligand-binding may perturb MCs' size due to varied metal-ligand binding strength when shuttling between solvents of different polarity. Herein, we applied physical confinement of a series of small noble MCs (<1 nm) inside ionic organic cages (I-Cages), which by means of anion exchange enables reversible transfer of MCs between aqueous and hydrophobic solutions without varying their ultrasmall size. Moreover, the MCs@I-Cage hybrid serves as a recyclable, reaction-switchable catalyst featuring high activity in liquid-phase NH₃BH₃ (AB) hydrolysis reaction with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 115 min^-1.

Alkaline Earth Metal Superatom of W@Si16: Characterization of Group 6 Metal Encapsulating Si16 Cage on Organic Substrates.

Project description:Transition metal atom (M)-encapsulating silicon cage nanoclusters (M@Si16) exhibit a superatomic nature, depending on the central M atom owing to the number of valence electrons and charge state on organic substrates. Since M@Si16 superatom featuring group 4 and 5 transition metal atoms exhibit rare-gas-like and alkali-like characteristics, respectively, group 6 transition metal atoms are expected to show alkaline earth-like behavior. In this study, M@Si16, comprising a central atom from group 6 (MVI = Cr, Mo, and W) were deposited on C60 substrates, and their electronic and chemical stabilities were investigated in terms of their charge state and chemical reactivity against oxygen exposures. In comparison to alkali-like Ta@Si16, the extent of charge transfer to the C60 substrate is approximately doubled, while the oxidative reactivity is subdued for MVI@Si16 on C60, especially for W@Si16. The results show that a divalent state of MVI@Si162+ appears on the C60 substrate, which is consistently calculated to be a symmetrical cage structure of W@Si162+ in C3v, revealing insights into the "periodic law" of M@Si16 superatoms pertaining to the characteristics of alkaline earth metals.

Thermally-induced atropisomerism promotes metal-organic cage construction.

Project description:Molecular folding regulation with environmental stimuli is critical in living and artificial molecular machine systems. Herein, we described a macrocycle, cyclo[4] (1,3-(4,6-dimethyl)benzene)[4](1,3-(4,6-dimethyl)benzene)(4-pyridine). Under 298 K, it has three stable stiff atropisomers with names as 1 (Cs symmetry), 2 (Cs symmetry), and 3 (C4v symmetry). At 393 K, 1 can reversibly transform into 2, but at 473 K, it can irrevocably transform into 3. At 338 K, 3 and (PhCN)2PdCl2 complex to produce the metal-organic cage 4. Only at 338 K does the combination of 1 or 2 and (PhCN)2PdCl2 create a gel-like structure. Heating both gels to 473 K transforms them into 4. In addition to offering a thermally accelerated method for modifying self-assembled systems using macrocyclic building blocks, this study also has the potential to develop the nanoscale transformation material with a thermal response.

Reversible switching of arylazopyrazole within a metal-organic cage.

Project description:Arylazopyrazoles represent a new family of molecular photoswitches characterized by a near-quantitative conversion between two states and long thermal half-lives of the metastable state. Here, we investigated the behavior of a model arylazopyrazole in the presence of a self-assembled cage based on Pd-imidazole coordination. Owing to its high water solubility, the cage can solubilize the E isomer of arylazopyrazole, which, by itself, is not soluble in water. NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography have independently demonstrated that each cage can encapsulate two molecules of E-arylazopyrazole. UV-induced switching to the Z isomer was accompanied by the release of one of the two guests from the cage and the formation of a 1:1 cage/Z-arylazopyrazole inclusion complex. DFT calculations suggest that this process involves a dramatic change in the conformation of the cage. Back-isomerization was induced with green light and resulted in the initial 1:2 cage/E-arylazopyrazole complex. This back-isomerization reaction also proceeded in the dark, with a rate significantly higher than in the absence of the cage.

Cucurbituril-Encapsulating Metal-Organic Framework via Mechanochemistry: Adsorbents with Enhanced Performance.

Project description:The first examples of monolithic crystalline host-guest hybrid materials are described. The reaction of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3 BTC) and Fe(NO3 )3 ⋅9 H2 O in the presence of decamethylcucurbit[5]uril ammonium chloride (MC5⋅2 NH4 Cl⋅4 H2 O) directly affords MC5@MIL-100(Fe) hybrid monoliths featuring hierarchical micro-, meso- and macropores. Particularly, this "bottle-around-ship" synthesis and one-pot shaping are facilitated by a newly discovered Fe-MC5 flowing gel formed by mechanochemistry. The designed MC5@MIL-100(Fe) hybrid material with MC5 as active domains shows enhanced CH4 and lead(II) uptake performance, and selective capture of lead(II) cations at low concentrations. This shows that host-guest hybrid materials can exhibit synergic properties that out-perform materials based on individual components.

Transferable Force Field for Metal-Organic Frameworks from First-Principles: BTW-FF.

Project description:We present an ab-initio derived force field to describe the structural and mechanical properties of metal-organic frameworks (or coordination polymers). The aim is a transferable interatomic potential that can be applied to MOFs regardless of metal or ligand identity. The initial parametrization set includes MOF-5, IRMOF-10, IRMOF-14, UiO-66, UiO-67, and HKUST-1. The force field describes the periodic crystal and considers effective atomic charges based on topological analysis of the Bloch states of the extended materials. Transferable potentials were developed for the four organic ligands comprising the test set and for the associated Cu, Zn, and Zr metal nodes. The predicted materials properties, including bulk moduli and vibrational frequencies, are in agreement with explicit density functional theory calculations. The modal heat capacity and lattice thermal expansion are also predicted.

Low temperature ionic conductor: ionic liquid incorporated within a metal-organic framework.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) show promise as safe electrolytes for electrochemical devices. However, the conductivity of ILs decreases markedly at low temperatures because of strong interactions arising between the component ions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are appropriate microporous host materials that can control the dynamics of ILs via the nanosizing of ILs and tunable interactions of MOFs with the guest ILs. Here, for the first time, we report on the ionic conductivity of an IL incorporated within a MOF. The system studied consisted of EMI-TFSA (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide) and ZIF-8 (Zn(MeIM)2, H(MeIM) = 2-methylimidazole) as the IL and the MOF, respectively. While the ionic conductivity of bulk EMI-TFSA showed a sharp decrease arising from freezing, the EMI-TFSA@ZIF-8 showed no marked decrease because there was no phase transition. The ionic conductivity of EMI-TFSA@ZIF-8 was higher than that of bulk EMI-TFSA below 250 K. This result points towards a novel method by which to design electrolytes for electrochemical devices such as batteries that can operate at low temperatures.

A silver metal-organic cage with antibacterial activity for wound healing.

Project description:Bacterial infection is one of the most threatening diseases in humans and can result in tissue necrosis, inflammation, and so on. Although a large number of antibacterial materials have been developed, there are still some disadvantages in this field, including decreasing antibacterial activity in the aqueous solution or a short duration of time. Herein, a metal-organic cage named Ag-TBI-TPE with excellent antibacterial activity was prepared and applied in wound healing. Owing to the photosensitive production of the toxic ROS species and the positive charge of the surface, the Ag-TBI-TPE cage exhibits high antibacterial activity, especially under UV irradiation. It could accelerate the healing process of the infected wounds in vivo with satisfactory biocompatibility and bio-safety. The results indicated that after treatment with the Ag-TBI-TPE cage, with and without UV irradiation, the healing rates of wounds infected by E. coli and S. aureus were 89.59% and 93.05%, and 83.48% and 90.84%, respectively, which were much higher than those shown by the positive control group at 51.38% and 67.74%, respectively. This study not only sheds light on a design idea for a new antibacterial material but also further expands the potential application field of metal-organic cages.

Hydrogen Isotope Separation Using a Metal-Organic Cage Built from Macrocycles.

Project description:Porous materials that contain ultrafine pore apertures can separate hydrogen isotopes via kinetic quantum sieving (KQS). However, it is challenging to design materials with suitably narrow pores for KQS that also show good adsorption capacities and operate at practical temperatures. Here, we investigate a metal-organic cage (MOC) assembled from organic macrocycles and ZnII ions that exhibits narrow windows (<3.0 Å). Two polymorphs, referred to as 2α and 2β, were observed. Both polymorphs exhibit D2 /H2 selectivity in the temperature range 30-100 K. At higher temperature (77 K), the D2 adsorption capacity of 2β increases to about 2.7 times that of 2α, along with a reasonable D2 /H2 selectivity. Gas sorption analysis and thermal desorption spectroscopy suggest a gate-opening effect of the MOCs pore aperture. This promotes KQS at temperatures above liquid nitrogen temperature, indicating that MOCs hold promise for hydrogen isotope separation in real industrial environments.

Hierarchically encapsulating enzymes with multi-shelled metal-organic frameworks for tandem biocatalytic reactions.

Project description:Biocatalytic transformations in living organisms, such as multi-enzyme catalytic cascades, proceed in different cellular membrane-compartmentalized organelles with high efficiency. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to mimicking biocatalytic cascade processes in natural systems. Herein, we demonstrate that multi-shelled metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used as a hierarchical scaffold to spatially organize enzymes on nanoscale to enhance cascade catalytic efficiency. Encapsulating multi-enzymes with multi-shelled MOFs by epitaxial shell-by-shell overgrowth leads to 5.8~13.5-fold enhancements in catalytic efficiencies compared with free enzymes in solution. Importantly, multi-shelled MOFs can act as a multi-spatial-compartmental nanoreactor that allows physically compartmentalize multiple enzymes in a single MOF nanoparticle for operating incompatible tandem biocatalytic reaction in one pot. Additionally, we use nanoscale Fourier transform infrared (nano-FTIR) spectroscopy to resolve nanoscale heterogeneity of vibrational activity associated to enzymes encapsulated in multi-shelled MOFs. Furthermore, multi-shelled MOFs enable facile control of multi-enzyme positions according to specific tandem reaction routes, in which close positioning of enzyme-1-loaded and enzyme-2-loaded shells along the inner-to-outer shells could effectively facilitate mass transportation to promote efficient tandem biocatalytic reaction. This work is anticipated to shed new light on designing efficient multi-enzyme catalytic cascades to encourage applications in many chemical and pharmaceutical industrial processes.
