Electrochemical data of single and hybrid sol-gel coating precursors for aluminum alloy corrosion protection in 3.5% NaCl.

ABSTRACT: The anti-corrosion performances of single(TEOS) and hybrid (APTES-TEOS) sol-gel coatings on Al alloy samples exposed to 3.5 wt% NaCl were evaluated employing electrochemical techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. The data acquired using the three corrosion analysis techniques were in accordance with each other where hybrid sol-gel coating offered the lowest corrosion rate and current density in comparison to the single precursor silanol coating. Tafel curves suggested that the hybrid silane coatings mitigate both the anodic and cathodic reactions simultaneously (mixed type inhibitor). These techniques justified that incorporation of hybrid sol-gel improved the Al corrosion protection performance considerably.

Anticorrosion Properties of a Novel Hybrid Sol-Gel Coating on Aluminum 3003 Alloy.

Project description:In this study, a novel hybrid sol-gel coating on AA3003 substrate was developed and the effects of various waste material additives on the reinforcement of the sol-gel coating and the anticorrosion properties in the saline medium were investigated. Egg shell, crumb rubber, activated carbon obtained for pyrolysis of waste rubber tire, waste rubber tire, cement kiln dust, and ST100 additives were tested as reinforcement materials. The AFM characterization results of the coating formulations on AA3003 alloy revealed enhanced roughness values for the modified coatings as compared to the base coating. Similarly, no significant changes were detected in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) absorption peaks of the hybrid polymeric material upon loading it with the waste additives, while slight changes in the hydrophobic properties of the final modified coatings were observed as a result of the modification process. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results revealed that the hybrid sol-gel coating had a promising potential for the protection of the AA3003 substrate against corrosion in the saline medium. However, the loaded additives negatively affected the corrosion resistance properties of the parent hybrid sol-gel coating. For instance, the egg shell additive had the least negative effect on the barrier properties, whereas the cured coating layer of the sample loaded with cement and clay additives showed some disintegration, inhomogeneity, and low barrier properties on the metal surface.

Influence of Waste Material Additives on the Performance of a Novel Hybrid Sol-Gel Coating on Mild Steel in 3.5% NaCl Medium.

Project description:This article presents the synthesis of a novel hybrid sol-gel coating and its functionalization with various waste material additives. The unmodified and modified hybrid coatings were deposited on mild steel (MS) substrates, and their anticorrosion performance in a 3.5 wt.% sodium chloride corrosive environment was assessed using potentiodynamic polarization and impedance electrochemical techniques. The Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) spectral, thermal, surface-roughness, scratch-resistance, and contact-angle characterizations were also conducted on the fabricated coatings. Electrochemical techniques proved that the coating sample loaded with the limestone additive showed the best anticorrosion behavior in the saline environment after 4 weeks of exposure. Moreover, the obtained morphological analysis data indicated better surface integrity and cross-link density for this sample compared to other waste-modified coatings. Conversely, the tire rubber and activated carbon additives showed a severe negative impact on the thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of the parent coating, which can be attributed to the high porosity and less integrated natures of these modified coating formulations proved by their morphological images. Still, all loaded waste additives to the hybrid coating have enhanced its adhesion to the steel surface, as indicated by scratch resistance testing. Overall, the results of the present study show the need for maintaining a balance between the economic value of the modification methodology of hybrid coatings and the type of the loaded waste material additive.

A Study of Early-Stage Corrosion Behavior of AZ91 Alloy and MAO-Coated Alloy in 3.5% NaCl Solutions.

Project description:The early-stage (1 h) corrosion behavior of AZ91 alloy before and after microarc oxidation treatment in a 3.5% NaCl solution was revealed using open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the observations of corroded surfaces at different immersion time (5, 25 and 45 min). The coating offers excellent corrosion resistance for the substrate for 1 h immersion corrosion by serving as a physical barrier. For the alloy, pitting corrosion initiates easily, but propagates difficultly, due to the formation of oxides/hydroxides in the pits. By comparison, the localized corrosion of the coated alloy proceeds continuously via the through pores, and the newly formed corrosion products inside the pores are easily damaged. Based on the electrochemical results, the alloy exhibits quasi-uniform corrosion, and the coated alloy reveals localized corrosion, both of which are under cathodic control.

Facile synthesis of Tb-decorated graphene oxide: electrochemical stability, hydrogen storage, and corrosion inhibition of Mg AZ13 alloy in 3.5% NaCl medium.

Project description:Magnesium alloys have been broadly used due to their lightweight and high ductility. However, they are subject to corrosion which deteriorates their properties. To develop a novel corrosion inhibitor coating for Mg alloys, we performed functionalization of a graphene oxide (GO) matrix with Tb(iii) to improve the electrochemical behaviour and coating stability of a GO and Tb composite on the metal alloys in corrosive medium. The functionalized terbium GO material was characterized by microscopy, spectroscopy, and XRD techniques to confirm the non-covalent interactions on the active surface of the host material. The corrosion inhibition was found to be ca. 80% and electrochemical stability was observed to be high at a voltage of 900 mV. Computational studies also support the potential anti-corrosion applications of this material.

Endowing magnesium with the corrosion-resistance property through cross-linking polymerized inorganic sol-gel coating.

Project description:The design of a highly adhesive, defect-free and low-temperature sol-gel coating for the protection of magnesium alloys is desirable yet challenging. In this study, a novel SiO2-based sol-gel coating is developed by a ring-opening addition reaction. Notably, the integration of individual sol clusters endows the sol-gel coating with a smooth and compact surface morphology, and eliminates the potential corrosion site of the low-temperature-prepared sol-gel coating. Besides, the as-obtained sol-gel coating exhibits excellent metallic adhesion nature. Most importantly, it increases the overall impedance modulus by 27 times than that of the conventional strategy and decreases the corrosion rate from 3.8 ± 0.5 mg cm-2 per day (commercial chromate conversion coating) to 0.5 ± 0.2 mg cm-2 per day.

The Microstructure Evolution and Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior of 7A46 Aluminum Alloy in Different Quenching Conditions.

Project description:The quenching condition of aluminum alloy can affect the mechanical property and corrosion resistance of the profile. This paper is aimed at the low quench sensitivity of aluminum alloys. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to analyze precipitate behaviors of the 7A46 aluminum alloy under different isothermal cooling conditions and microstructure evolutions of quench-induced precipitations. The effect of the different isothermal time on the corrosion resistance of the alloy, and the relationship between microstructure and corrosion resistance after quenching were revealed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization tests. Results show that corrosion sensitivity of the quenching-aged alloy is much higher than that of the double-aged (DA) alloy, and the corrosion resistance of the quenched alloy decreases firstly and then increases. Due to the high density of the matrix precipitates, the increased content of the impurity element, the discontinuity of the grain boundary precipitates and the widening of the precipitates free zone, the most serious degree of corrosion performance among the quenched alloys is 295 °C at 800 s, and the self-corrosion potential and self-current density is -0.919 V and 2.371 μA/cm2, respectively.

Biocompatibility and Corrosion Protection Behaviour of Hydroxyapatite Sol-Gel-Derived Coatings on Ti6Al4V Alloy.

Project description:The aim of this work was to prepare hydroxyapatite coatings (HAp) by a sol-gel method on Ti6Al4V alloy and to study the bioactivity, biocompatibility and corrosion protection behaviour of these coatings in presence of simulated body fluids (SBFs). Thermogravimetric/Differential Thermal Analyses (TG/DTA) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) have been applied to obtain information about the phase transformations, mass loss, identification of the phases developed, crystallite size and degree of crystallinity of the obtained HAp powders. Fourier Transformer Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) has been utilized for studying the functional groups of the prepared structures. The surface morphology of the resulting HAp coatings was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The bioactivity was evaluated by soaking the HAp-coatings/Ti6Al4V system in Kokubo's Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) applying Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectrometry. 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and Alamar blue cell viability assays were used to study the biocompatibility. Finally, the corrosion behaviour of HAp-coatings/Ti6Al4V system was researched by means of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The obtained results showed that the prepared powders were nanocrystalline HAp with little deviations from that present in the human bone. All the prepared HAp coatings deposited on Ti6Al4V showed well-behaved biocompatibility, good bioactivity and corrosion protection properties.

Microstructure and Corrosion of Cast Magnesium Alloy ZK60 in NaCl Solution.

Project description:In this work, the effects of the microstructure and phase constitution of cast magnesium alloy ZK60 (Mg-5.8Zn-0.57Zr, element concentration in wt.%) on the corrosion behavior in aqueous NaCl (0.1 mol dm-3) were investigated by weight-loss measurements, hydrogen evolution tests, and electrochemical techniques. The alloy was found to be composed of ?-Mg matrix, with large second-phase particles of MgZn2 deposited along grain boundaries and a Zr-rich region in the central area of the grains. The large second-phase particles and the Zr-rich regions were more stable than the Mg matrix, resulting in a strong micro-galvanic effect. A filiform corrosion was found. It originated from the second-phase particles in the grain boundary regions in the early corrosion period. The filaments gradually occupied most areas of the alloy surface, and the general corrosion rate decreased significantly. Corrosion pits were developed under filaments. The pit growth rate decreased over time; however, it was about eight times larger than the general corrosion rate. A schematic model is presented to illustrate the corrosion mechanism.

Synthesis and characterization of novel dicarbohydrazide derivatives with electrochemical and theoretical approaches as potential corrosion inhibitors for N80 steel in a 3.5% NaCl solution.

Project description:Two novel ethanoanthracene-11,12-dicarbohydrazide derivatives N'11,N'12-bis((Z)-4-hydroxybenzylidene)-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene-11,12-dicarbohydrazide (H2HEH) and N'11,N'12-bis((Z)-4-methoxybenzylidene)-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene-11,12-dicarbohydrazide (H2MEH) were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, electronic spectra, and NMR spectroscopy. These two derivatives as novel anticorrosion inhibitors for N80 steel in a 3.5% NaCl solution were studied using electrochemical techniques including potentiodynamic polarization (PP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM). Corrosion parameters and adsorption isotherms were determined from current-potential diagrams (i.e., Tafel slopes). The impact of temperature and inhibitor concentration on the corrosion performance was studied using the PP method. The PP results suggested mixed-type inhibitors. The inhibition prohibition increased and decreased when the dose was increased and the temperature was increased, respectively. The adsorption of the hydrazides on the N80 exterior followed the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum inhibition proficiency for H2MEH and H2HEH were 93.3% and 92.2%, respectively, at 1 × 10-4 M. Moreover, the investigated surface was studied with the synthesized compounds through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to confirm the construction of an adsorbed shielding barrier. An evident association was established between the corrosion inhibition proficiency and theoretical variables acquired using the density functional theory (DFT) method and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The experimental data were in good agreement with the theoretical results.

A Molecularly Imprinted Sol-Gel Electrochemical Sensor for Naloxone Determination.

Project description:A molecularly imprinted sol-gel is reported for selective and sensitive electrochemical determination of the drug naloxone (NLX). The sensor was developed by combining molecular imprinting and sol-gel techniques and electrochemically grafting the sol solution onto a functionalized multiwall carbon nanotube modified indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode. The sol-gel layer was obtained from acid catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of a solution composed of triethoxyphenylsilane (TEPS) and tetraethoxysilane (TES). The fabrication, structure and properties of the sensing material were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. Parameters affecting the sensor's performance were evaluated and optimized. A sensor fabricated under the optimized conditions responded linearly between 0.0 µM and 12 µM NLX, with a detection limit of 0.02 µM. The sensor also showed good run-to-run repeatability and batch-to-batch performance reproducibility with relative standard deviations (RSD) of 2.5-7.8% (n = 3) and 9.2% (n = 4), respectively. The developed sensor displayed excellent selectivity towards NLX compared to structurally similar compounds (codeine, fentanyl, naltrexone and noroxymorphone), and was successfully used to measure NLX in synthetic urine samples yielding recoveries greater than 88%.
