Data on iron and turbidity in a drip irrigation system in New Jersey, USA.

ABSTRACT: The dataset contains irrigation water quality parameters including iron concentrations (ferrous, ferric, and total) and turbidity measurements from a blueberry farm in southern New Jersey. Data was collected from May through June for 14 weeks in 2015 using a SMART3 Colorimeter™. Water samples were taken from the pump at the irrigation well and compared to samples taken from driplines at individual fields. All samples were analyzed in the field following the equipment׳s manual, except for ferric iron, which was calculated from the ferrous iron and total iron concentrations. Statistical analyses were performed on the dataset to understand the data. This data is being made available to increase the understanding of clogging in drip irrigation systems and to assist in the management of drip irrigation systems.

Project description:Rational irrigation and nitrogen management strategies are crucial for wheat growth. However, the optimal amount of water and nitrogen for the newly developed drip irrigated spring wheat system (TR6S, one drip tube service for six rows of wheat, with a row spacing of 10 cm and an inter-block space of 25 cm, saves drip tubes and obtains higher profits) in dry and semi-arid areas remains unclear. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted with four nitrogen levels (300, 270, 240, and 0 kg ha-1 referred N300, N270, N240, and N0) and four irrigation levels (4500, 4200, 3900, and 3600 m3 ha-1 referred I4500, I4200, I3900, and I3600) during the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 spring wheat seasons to analyze the effects of irrigation (I) and nitrogen (N) levels on grain yield, water-nitrogen use efficiency, profit, biomass accumulation, and nitrogen nutrient absorption status under TR6S. Compared with the traditional irrigation and nitrogen management strategy (N300-I4500, as control), lesser irrigation and nitrogen supply (I<3979 m3 ha-1 and N<273 kg ha-1) saved cost but led to lower grain yield, water use efficiency (WUE), agronomic efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer (AEN), and profit. However, a moderate reduction in irrigation and nitrogen supply (4500 m3 ha-1>I>3979 m3 ha-1 and 300 kg ha-1 >N>273 kg ha-1) improved grain yield, WUE, AEN, and profit. The increase in grain yield was mainly related to the rise in 1000-grain weight and kernels per spike. Although the moderate reduction in irrigation lowered soil moisture status, the dry matter pre-stored in the vegetative organs before anthesis that gets redistributed into grains during grain filling was improved. Moreover, the moderate reduction in nitrogen supply resulted in a more reasonable nitrogen nutrition index (NNI) of wheat plant, which improved flag leaf area and chlorophyll relative content (SPAD) at the anthesis stage. This also played a positive role in biomass accumulation and redistributed, yield structure optimization. Considering comprehensively yield, WUE, AEN and profit, combination of 285 kg ha-1 N and 4170 m3 ha-1 I was optimal irrigation and nitrogen application pattern for TR6S. This strategy can be applied to other arid and semi-arid regions.

Project description:The behavior of clogging has a close relationship with the biofilm attached on inner surface of the pipeline in a drip irrigation system using reclaimed water. Therefore, inhibiting biofilm growth is the key to completely addressing the clogging problem. Water shear forces play a vital role in the formation, development and detachment of biofilm. In order to find out the accumulation mechanism of biofilm under different water shear forces, this paper considered 8 different shear forces with a range of [0, 0.7]Pa on the inner surface of pipelines in drip irrigation systems using three kinds of reclaimed water. The results indicate that dry weight (DW), phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) of biofilms show a S-type trend, the maximum contents were observed when τ was 0.2 Pa or 0. 35 Pa. Besides, the influence of water shear forces on biofilms is dual. The formation of biofilm is a dynamic stabilization process. When there is a relatively large shear force, it is favorable to the transport and renewal of microorganisms and nutrients. Meantime, the renewal speed of biofilms is also relatively fast. It is easy to form the biofilms with large surface and small thickness due to relatively high possibility of detachment. When the shear force is small, the transport speed of microorganisms and nutrients are limited, and the ability of microorganisms to secrete polysaccharides is reduced, which makes the nutrients needed for microbial growth insufficient and the adhesion between particles is also reduced, resulting in loose, unstable and an easily removed biofilm structure. After a comprehensive consideration of the dual influence, the critical controlling threshold of internal water shear force was obtained as [0, 0.20] ∪ [0.35, +∞] Pa. In addition, the growth model established in this paper can well describe the growth kinetics of attached biofilms, and provide theoretical reference for monitoring the occurrence of bio-clogging process in drip irrigation systems.
