Cognitive decline and the PPAR-γ Pro12Ala genotype: variation by sex and ethnicity.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

We investigated the association between the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-gamma Pro12Ala polymorphism and cognitive decline in older adults.

Methods

Participants from a population-based cohort of older Hispanic and non-Hispanic white adults (n = 492) were administered the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), a multi-domain cognitive screening tool, and the Behavioral Dyscontrol Scale (BDS), a measure of executive cognitive function, at baseline and at follow-up, an average of 22 months later. Multiple linear regression was used to investigate the association between the two cognitive test scores and the Pro12Ala polymorphism.
