Project description:Interfacial water evaporation technology by using solar energy provides one of the promising pathways for freshwater shortage management. However, current research mainly focuses on the improvement of evaporation efficiency by macro or microregulations, ignoring the steam temperature, which is a manifestation of the quality of water. Herein not only is a high-rate solar evaporation achieved but also steam temperature is enhanced by a simple three-tier (wet absorber-air gap-dry absorber) device. In a routine interfacial evaporation test, the evaporator achieves a stable evaporation rate up to 2.15 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun, demonstrating a competitive evaporation rate compared with other reports. With the three-tier device, the steam temperature can increase 33.7%, 41.13%, and 47% without dry absorber under one sun, two sun, and three sun illumination, respectively. At the same time, the steam temperature can be as high as 95.5 °C under three sun intensities. This work provides the possibility of using a simple three-tier device for high-temperature steam generation without extra energy input, which contributes to an idea for future research on the production high-quality water.

Project description:Elbow arthroscopy is an increasingly common procedure performed in orthopaedic surgery. However, because of the presence of several major neurovascular structures in close proximity to the operative portals, it can have potentially devastating complications. The largest series of elbow arthroscopies to date described a 2.5% rate of postoperative neurological injury. All of these injuries were transient nerve injuries resolved without intervention. A recent report of major nerve injuries after elbow arthroscopy demonstrated that these injuries are likely under-reported in literature. Because of the surrounding neurovascular structures, familiarity with normal elbow anatomy and portals will decrease the risk of damaging important structures. The purpose of this Technical Note is to review important steps in performing elbow arthroscopy with an emphasis on avoiding neurovascular injury. With a sound understanding of the important bony anatomic landmarks, sensory nerves, and neurovascular structures, elbow arthroscopy can provide both diagnostic and therapeutic intervention with little morbidity.

Project description:Ankle arthroscopy has emerged as a viable treatment option for multiple ankle pathologies and continues to have expanding indications as technology and techniques improve. Historically, ankle arthroscopy used skeletal traction, and it has transitioned to noninvasive soft-tissue distraction because of high rates of iatrogenic complications. Although soft-tissue distraction has decreased complications, it continues to be both cumbersome and time-consuming. Thus we propose a 1-step simple ankle arthroscopy distraction technique that uses an external positioning arm to allow the surgeon to apply manual traction in multiple positions without the use of any reprocessed sterile equipment.

Project description:Despite all the advances in hip arthroscopy, microfracture is still the workhorse for treating focal and full-thickness cartilage lesions. The success of this treatment is owed to its reliability and simplicity. Given the structure of the hip joint, however, there are challenges to this procedure using a conventional microfracture pick. This note presents our current and preferred microfracture technique using a curve drill guide and flexible drill. This method offers greater range of access to different regions of the joint with ease, thus ensuring a reproducible and quicker procedure with less risk.

Project description:Establishing the introductory viewing portal is a key step in hip arthroscopy. Most hip arthroscopists initially gain access to the central compartment of the hip through the anterolateral portal. Iatrogenic injury to the labrum or the femoral head chondral surface is a common yet under-reported complication of the procedure. Instead of directing the needle toward the clear space of the distracted joint, labral penetration can be minimized by directing the needle slightly anteroinferior to the clear space, overlapping the superior femoral head. Femoral head scuffing can be minimized by adjusting the position of the beveled needle and confirming a straight guidewire trajectory before trocar placement. This technical note addresses surgical pearls to minimize iatrogenic injury during initial central compartment access.

Project description:Capsulotomy is typically performed during arthroscopic treatment for femoroacetabular impingement. As the frequency of hip arthroscopy continues to expand rapidly, increased attention is being paid to the implications of interportal capsulotomy and the need for repair. To minimize the risk of postoperative instability, capsular closure has been recommended to restore the anatomy and biomechanical function of the capsule. We present a reliable, efficient, and effective method for arthroscopic closure of the interportal capsulotomy after hip arthroscopy.

Project description:To solve the existing problems of low yield, uneven quality, and single form of industrially scrambled eggs, we have developed a continuous high-output steam scrambled egg device based on the principle of steam injected. By establishing calibration curves for egg, oil, and steam flow rates, determining the key parameters of the equipment, and simulating the heat transfer process between steam and egg by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), we created the device and verified its production performance. The results show that the capacity of this device can reach 104.4 kg/h, which greatly improves production efficiency. By precisely adjusting the steam flow, this device can produce scrambled eggs in the form of blocks, thick slices, thin slices, and broken. Moreover, the differences between the scrambled eggs produced by this device and the traditional frying pan were not significant in terms of color, taste and sensory evaluation (p > 0.05). Most importantly, this device produces scrambled eggs with better elasticity, softer texture, and better overall uniformity of maturity to achieve consumer satisfaction. This study provides technical support for the industrialized continuous production of Chinese egg dishes.

Project description:Terahertz (THz) wave detectors are increasingly expected to serve as key components of powerful nondestructive and noncontact inspection tools in a large variety of fields. In contrast to conventional THz detectors based on rigid solid materials, we previously developed an uncooled and bendable THz camera based on the THz-induced photothermoelectric effect of carbon nanotube (CNT) array devices and demonstrated omnidirectional THz imaging of three-dimensional curved samples. Although this development opened a pathway to flexible THz electronics, the physical parameters that determine the performance of the CNT THz camera have not been fully investigated. As a result, the thermal device design has not been optimized in terms of the camera sensitivity and spatial resolution. In this work, we studied the underlying mechanism of the THz-induced photothermoelectric effect of the CNT camera and found physical factors related to the detector performance. Through simulation and experiments, we observed that the detection sensitivity and response time strongly depend on the CNT channel width and film thickness. We further identified that the irradiated wave penetration into the CNT film through the electrode materials deteriorates the detection area, which is directly linked to the camera spatial resolution. By utilizing the improved CNT device design fabricated based on these findings, we eliminated undesired signals generated via thermal diffusion and THz wave penetration and achieved higher-sensitivity THz detection and higher imaging resolution compared to our previously reported THz camera. The presented technologies are expected to contribute to future flexible THz imaging applications and will also be applicable to other types of photothermoelectric devices.

Therefore, we have proposed a simple technique and illustration from our operating room setup to traction and to our procedural technique to make great toe arthroscopy simple and reproducible for arthroscopic foot and ankle surgeons.

Project description:Technologies for solar steam generation with high performance can help solving critical societal issues such as water desalination or sterilization, especially in developing countries. Very recently, we have witnessed a rapidly growing interest in the scientific community proposing sunlight absorbers for direct conversion of liquid water into steam. While those solutions can possibly be of interest from the perspective of the involved novel materials, in this study we intend to demonstrate that efficient steam generation by solar source is mainly due to a combination of efficient solar absorption, capillary water feeding and narrow gap evaporation process, which can also be achieved through common materials. To this end, we report both numerical and experimental evidence that advanced nano-structured materials are not strictly necessary for performing sunlight driven water-to-vapor conversion at high efficiency (i.e. ≥85%) and relatively low optical concentration (≈10 suns). Coherently with the principles of frugal innovation, those results unveil that solar steam generation for desalination or sterilization purposes may be efficiently obtained by a clever selection and assembly of widespread and inexpensive materials.
