A Self-Healing and Electrical-Tree-Inhibiting Epoxy Composite with Hydrogen-Bonds and SiO₂ Particles.

ABSTRACT: Electrical tree growth in the insulation material is a main factor limiting the lifespan of insulation. A new method of increasing the durability and reliability of polymer dielectrics has been proposed by designing a three-phase electrical self-healing composite. SiO₂ micro and nano particles were loaded in the sample which can improve the resistance to electrical tree breakdown. Materials with hydrogen bonds were synthesized and added into epoxy matrix to make the composite self-healable. It is found that both SiO₂ and hydrogen-bonding self-healing material (HSM) can inhibit the electrical trees. Besides the self-healing behavior at the macro level, the incorporation of HSM can also make the micro defects such as electrical tree channel self-healable. The electrical self-healing composite will find a wide application in the field of electronic and electrical engineering.

Epoxy-Based Catalyst-Free Self-Healing Elastomers at Room Temperature Employing Aromatic Disulfide and Hydrogen Bonds.

Project description:In this paper, catalyst-free room-temperature healing epoxy vitrimer-like materials (S-vitrimer) are introduced. The S-vitrimer can be healed at room temperature without any external stimuli such as solvent, pressure, heat, and catalyst through an aromatic disulfide exchange reaction and a hydrogen bond because the glass transition temperature of the S-vitrimer is lower than room temperature. Self-healing materials are attracting widespread attention nowadays with their potential to increase the durability of the materials. However, there is still elevating need for research, considering the limitations of various self-healing methods. To the best of our knowledge, epoxy-based catalyst-free room-temperature healing materials have not been investigated until now, yet they are promising to make self-healing easier. Moreover, the S-vitrimer showed higher healing efficiency when healed for a longer time and at a higher temperature. Especially when healed at room temperature for 96 h, the S-vitrimer presented an 80% healing efficiency. The S-vitrimer also showed an 80% healing efficiency when healed at 60 °C for 48 h. To investigate the factors affecting self-healing behavior, three control experiments were carried out. Control experiments showed that the S-vitrimer is healed mainly due to a disulfide exchange reaction, but hydrogen bonds also contribute to self-healing behavior. Also, it was found that tightly packed segments can hinder self-healing through control experiments.

A mechanical, electrical dual autonomous self-healing multifunctional composite hydrogel.

Project description:The versatile properties make hydrogels a potential multipurpose material that finds wide applications. However, the preparation of multipurpose hydrogels is very challenging. Here, we report a method based on free radical reaction and composite mechanisms to prepare mechanical and electrical self-healing multifunctional hydrogels. In this study, the introduction of imidazolium salt ionic liquids and glycerol in the hydrogel system endows the gels with good antibacterial, conductive, and adhesive properties and excellent antifreeze properties. The testing results show that the as-prepared hydrogel has stable mechanical and electrical properties even under the extremely cold condition of -50°C after self-healing. Moreover, the active esters formed in the dynamic radical reaction have better reducibility, thus further investing the as-prepared hydrogel with high antioxidant activity. The application results show that these comprehensive properties make such hydrogel system very useful in wound repair and wearable strain sensors.

Electrically Self-Healing Thermoset MWCNTs Composites Based on Diels-Alder and Hydrogen Bonds.

Project description:In this work, we prepared electrically conductive self-healing nanocomposites. The material consists of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) that are dispersed into thermally reversible crosslinked polyketones. The reversible nature is based on both covalent (Diels-Alder) and non-covalent (hydrogen bonding) interactions. The design allowed for us to tune the thermomechanical properties of the system by changing the fractions of filler, and diene-dienophile and hydroxyl groups. The nanocomposites show up to 1 × 104 S/m electrical conductivity, reaching temperatures between 120 and 150 °C under 20-50 V. The self-healing effect, induced by electricity was qualitatively demonstrated as microcracks were repaired. As pointed out by electron microscopy, samples that were already healed by electricity showed a better dispersion of MWCNT within the polymer. These features point toward prolonging the service life of polymer nanocomposites, improving the product performance, making it effectively stronger and more reliable.

A Hydrogen Bonds-Crosslinked Hydrogels With Self-Healing and Adhesive Properties for Hemostatic.

Project description:Hydrogels with adhesive properties have the potential for rapid haemostasis and wound healing in uncontrolled non-pressurized surface bleeding. Herein, a typical hydrogen bond-crosslinked hydrogel with the above functions was constructed by directly mixing solutions of humic acid (HA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), in which the HA worked as a crosslinking agent to form hydrogen bonds with the PVP. By altering the concentration of HA, a cluster of stable and uniform hydrogels were prepared within 10 s. The dynamic and reversible nature of the hydrogen bonds gave the HA/PVP complex (HPC) hydrogels injectability and good flexibility, as well as a self-healing ability. Moreover, the numerous functional groups in the hydrogels enhanced the cohesion strength and interaction on the interface between the hydrogel and the substrate, endowing them with good adhesion properties. The unique chemical composition and cross-linking mechanism gave the HPC hydrogel good biocompatibility. Taking advantage of all these features, the HPC hydrogels obtained in this work were broadly applied as haemostatic agents and showed a good therapeutic effect. This work might lead to an improvement in the development of multifunctional non-covalent hydrogels for application to biomaterials.

Inorganically modified particles FeAl-LDH@SiO<sub>2</sub> as reinforcement in poly (methyl) methacrylate matrix composite.

Project description:Silica particles were obtained from rice husk to which layered double hydroxide particles were deposited (weight ratio 1 : 1). Fe2+-Al3+ layered double hydroxides (FeAl-LDH) were synthesized by co-precipitation with ratios Fe : Al of 3 : 1 in the presence of SiO2 particles from the rice husk. Characterization of the synthesized FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles was performed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy with EDS. Prepared FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles were used as reinforcing agents in 1, 3 and 5 wt% quantity in poly (methyl) methacrylate matrix. The aim of this study was to examine whether FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles affect the mechanical properties of polymer composite materials. The morphology of the composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Microindentation, tensile and impact testing determined the mechanical properties of the obtained composites.

Hybrid Hemp Particles as Functional Fillers for the Manufacturing of Hydrophobic and Anti-icing Epoxy Composite Coatings.

Project description:The development of hydrophobic composite coatings is of great interest for several applications in the aerospace industry. Functionalized microparticles can be obtained from waste fabrics and employed as fillers to prepare sustainable hydrophobic epoxy-based coatings. Following a waste-to-wealth approach, a novel hydrophobic epoxy-based composite including hemp microparticles (HMPs) functionalized with waterglass solution, 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane, polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride, and either hexadecyltrimethoxysilane or 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane is presented. The resulting epoxy coatings based on hydrophobic HMPs were cast on aeronautical carbon fiber-reinforced panels to improve their anti-icing performance. Wettability and anti-icing behavior of the prepared composites were investigated at 25 °C and -30 °C (complete icing time), respectively. Samples cast with the composite coating can achieve up to 30 °C higher water contact angle and doubled icing time than aeronautical panels treated with unfilled epoxy resin. A low content (2 wt %) of tailored HMPs causes an increase of ∼26% in the glass transition temperature of the coatings compared to pristine resin, confirming the good interaction between the hemp filler and epoxy matrix at the interphase. Finally, atomic force microscopy reveals that the HMPs can induce the formation of a hierarchical structure on the surface of casted panels. This rough morphology, combined with the silane activity, allows the preparation of aeronautical substrates with enhanced hydrophobicity, anti-icing capability, and thermal stability.

Bio-Based Self-Healing Epoxy Vitrimers with Dynamic Imine and Disulfide Bonds Derived from Vanillin, Cystamine, and Dimer Diamine.

Project description:The condensation reactions of 4,4'-(ethane-1,2-diylbis (oxy)) bis(3-methoxybenzaldehyde) (VV) with cystamine, 1,6-hexamenthylene diamine, and a dimer diamine (PriamineTM 1075) produced three types of vanillin-derived imine-and disulfide-containing diamines (VC, VH, and VD, respectively). Thermal curing reactions of polyglycerol polyglycidyl ether with VD and mixtures of VC/VD and VH/VD produced bio-based epoxy vitrimers (BEV-VD, BEV-VC/VD, and BEV-VH/VD, respectively). The degree of swelling and gel fraction tests revealed the formation of a network structure, and the crosslinking density increased with a decreasing VD fraction. The glass transition temperature, tensile strength, and tensile modulus of the cured films increased as the VD fraction decreased. In contrast, the thermal degradation temperature of the cured films increased as the VD fraction increased. All the cured films were healed by hot pressing at 120 °C for 2 h under 1 MPa at least three times. The healing efficiencies, based on tensile strength after the first healing treatment, were 75-78%, which gradually decreased as the healing cycle was repeated. When imine-and disulfide-containing BEV-VC/VD and imine-containing BEV-VH/VD with the same VC/VD and VH/VD ratios were used, the former exhibited a slightly higher healing efficiency.

Footprinting SHAPE-eCLIP reveals transcriptome-wide hydrogen bonds at RNA-protein interfaces

Project description:Discovering the interaction mechanism and location of RNA binding proteins (RBPs) on RNA is critical for understanding gene expression regulation. Here, we apply selective 2’-hydroxyl acylation analyzed by primer extension (SHAPE) on in vivo transcripts to identify transcriptome-wide footprints (fSHAPE) on RNA when compared to protein-absent transcripts. Structural analyses indicate that fSHAPE precisely detects nucleotides whose base moieties hydrogen bond with protein and that fSHAPE patterns can predict binding sites of RBPs of interest. To illustrate, we demonstrate that fSHAPE correctly identifies known and novel iron response protein RNA elements. Furthermore, we enable selective interrogation of RNA-protein complexes by integrating SHAPE and fSHAPE with crosslinking and immunoprecipitation (eCLIP) of desired RBPs. To demonstrate, histone stem loop elements and their nucleotides that hydrogen bond with stem-loop binding protein were identified by SHAPE-eCLIP and fSHAPE-eCLIP. Together, these technologies greatly expand on strategies for understanding specific cellular RNA interactions in RNA-protein complexes.

SiO-induced thermal instability and interplay between graphite and SiO in graphite/SiO composite anode.

Project description:Silicon monoxide (SiO), which exhibits better cyclability compared to silicon while delivering higher capacity than that of graphite, is an adequate material for the development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) having higher energy densities. However, incorporating silicon-based materials including SiO into stable graphite anode inevitably degrades not only cycle life but also calendar life of LIBs, while little is known about their aging mechanisms. Here, SiO-induced thermal instability of the graphite/SiO composite anode is investigated. We reveal that under thermal exposure, SiO accelerates the loss of lithium inventory and concomitantly facilitates the lithium de-intercalation from graphite. This self-discharge phenomenon, which is weakly observed in the graphite anode without SiO, is the result of preferential parasitic reaction on the SiO interface and spontaneous electron and lithium-ion migration to equilibrate the electron energy imbalance between graphite and SiO. Understanding this underlying electron-level interplay between graphite and SiO in the composite anode will contribute toward improving shelf life of SiO-containing LIBs in actual operating conditions.

Rosin-Based Epoxy Vitrimers with Dynamic Boronic Ester Bonds.

Project description:Rosin is an abundantly available natural product. In this paper, for the first time, a rosin derivative is employed as the main monomer for preparation of epoxy vitrimers to improve the mechanical properties of vitrimers. Novel epoxy vitrimer networks with dynamic reversible covalent boronic ester bonds are constructed by a reaction between thiols in 2,2'-(1,4-phenylene)-bis (4-mercaptan-1,3,2-dioxaborolane) (BDB) as a curing agent and epoxy groups in the rosin derivative. The rosin-based epoxy vitrimer networks are fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), an equilibrium swelling experiment, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The obtained rosin-based epoxy vitrimers possess superior thermostability and good mechanical properties. Due to transesterification of boronic ester bonds, rosin epoxy vitrimer network topologies can be altered, giving welding, recycle, self-healing, and shape memory abilities to the fabricated polymer. Besides, the effects of treating time and temperature on welding capability is investigated, and it is found that the welding efficiency of the 20% C-FPAE sample is >93% after treatment for 12 h at 160 °C. Moreover, through a hot press, the pulverized samples of 20% C-FPAE can be reshaped several times and most mechanical properties are restored after reprocessing at 200 °C for 60 min. Finally, chemical degradation is researched for the rosin-based epoxy vitrimers.
