Efficient Electrocatalytic Reduction of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol in a Microchannel Flow Reactor.

ABSTRACT: Furfural is considered to be an essential biobased platform molecule. Recently, its electrocatalytic hydrogenation is regarded as a more environmentally friendly process compared to traditional catalytic hydrogenation. In this study, a new, continuous-flow approach enabling furfural electrocatalytic reduction was developed. In an undivided multichannel electrochemical flow reactor at ambient temperature and pressure in basic reaction conditions, the yield of furfuryl alcohol reached up to 90% in only 10 min residence time. Interestingly, the faradaic efficiency was 90%, showing a good effectiveness of the consumed electrons in the generation of the targeted compound. Furthermore, the innovation lies in the direct electrolysis using the green solvent ethanol without the need for membrane separation or catalyst modification, which offers further proof for continuous and sustainable production in industry.

Efficient bioconversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol by <i>Bacillus coagulans</i> NL01.

Project description:Bio-catalysis is an attractive alternative to replace chemical methods due to its high selectivity and mild reaction conditions. Furfural is an important bio-based platform compound generated from biomass. Herein, the bio-catalytic reduction of furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) was performed by using a furfural tolerant strain, Bacillus coagulans NL01. An efficient co-substrate was explored and a high conversion and selectivity of FAL to FOL was reported over this bio-catalytic system using glucose as co-substrate. As the bioconversion occurred over 42 mM FAL, 20 g L-1 glucose and 9 mg mL-1 at 50 °C, a high conversion and selectivity was obtained by 3 h reaction. This transformation rate of FAL was the highest compared with other reactions. Furthermore, about 98 mM FOL was produced from FAL within 24 h by a fed-batch strategy with a conversion of 92% and selectivity of 96%. These results indicate that this bio-catalytic reduction of FAL has high potential for application to upgrading of FAL and B. coagulans NL01 is a promising biocatalyst for the synthesis of FOL. In addition, this bio-catalytic reduction shows a high potential application for catalytic upgrading of FAL from biomass.

Efficient Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol Using an Anion-Exchange Membrane Electrolysis Cell.

Project description:The electrochemical hydrogenation (ECH) of furfural (FF) offers a promising pathway for the production of furfuryl alcohol (FA) while aligning with sustainability and environmental considerations. However, this technology has primarily been studied in half-cell configurations operating at high cell voltages and low current densities. Herein, we employ a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) system with an anion-exchange membrane for the ECH of FF and systematically investigate various parameters, including the ionomer content in the cathode catalyst, electrolyte type, electrolyte concentration, and flow rate. Under optimal conditions, our MEA system with non-noble metal-based catalysts exhibits a current density of 30 mA cm-2 with a Faradaic efficiency for FA production of 66% at a cell voltage of 2 V, maintaining operational durability for 5 h. This study highlights the potential of electrochemical FA production for practical applications to realize the decarbonization of the hydrogenation industry.

Efficient conversion of propane in a microchannel reactor at ambient conditions.

Project description:The oxidative dehydrogenation of propane, primarily sourced from shale gas, holds promise in meeting the surging global demand for propylene. However, this process necessitates high operating temperatures, which amplifies safety concerns in its application due to the use of mixed propane and oxygen. Moreover, these elevated temperatures may heighten the risk of overoxidation, leading to carbon dioxide formation. Here we introduce a microchannel reaction system designed for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane within an aqueous environment, enabling highly selective and active propylene production at room temperature and ambient pressure with mitigated safety risks. A propylene selectivity of over 92% and production rate of 19.57 mmol mCu-2 h-1 are simultaneously achieved. This exceptional performance stems from the in situ creation of a highly active, oxygen-containing Cu catalytic surface for propane activation, and the enhanced propane transfer via an enlarged gas-liquid interfacial area and a reduced diffusion path by establishing a gas-liquid Taylor flow using a custom-made T-junction microdevice. This microchannel reaction system offers an appealing approach to accelerate gas-liquid-solid reactions limited by the solubility of gaseous reactant.

Effect of Co-Doping on Cu/CaO Catalysts for Selective Furfural Hydrogenation into Furfuryl Alcohol.

Project description:Cu/CaO catalysts with fine-tuned Co-doping for excellent catalytic performance of furfural (FAL) hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) were synthesized by a facile wetness impregnation method. The optimal Co1.40Cu1/CaO catalyst, with a Co to Cu mole ratio of 1.40:1, exhibited a 100% FAL conversion with a FOL yield of 98.9% at 100 °C and 20 bar H2 pressure after 4 h. As gained from catalyst characterizations, Co addition could facilitate the reducibility of the CoCu system. Metallic Cu, Co-Cu alloys, and oxide species with CaO, acting as the major active components for the reaction, were formed after reduction at 500 °C. Additionally, this combination of Co and Cu elements could result in an improvement of catalyst textures when compared with the bare CaO. Smaller catalyst particles were formed after the addition of Co into Cu species. It was found that the addition of Co to Cu on the CaO support could fine-tune the appropriate acidic and basic sites to boost the FOL yield and selectivity with suppression of undesired products. These observations could confirm that the high efficiency and selectivity are mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between the catalytically active Co-Cu species and the CaO basic sites. Additionally, the FAL conversion and FOL yield insignificantly changed throughout the third consecutive run, confirming a high stability of the developed Co1.40Cu1/CaO catalyst.

Highly Efficient Transfer Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol over Mesoporous Zr-Containing Hybrids with 5-Sulfosalicylic Acid as a Ligand.

Project description:The catalytic transfer hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural to furfuryl alcohol under mild conditions is an attractive topic in biorefinery. Herein, mesoporous Zr-containing hybrids (Zr-hybrids) with a high surface area (281.9-291.3 m2/g) and large pore volume (0.49-0.74 cm3/g) were prepared using the biomass-derived 5-sulfosalicylic acid as a ligand, and they were proven to be highly efficient for the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction of furfural to furfuryl alcohol at 110 °C, with the highest furfuryl alcohol yield reaching up to 97.8%. Characterizations demonstrated that sulfonic and carboxyl groups in 5-sulfosalicylic acid molecules were coordinated with zirconium ions, making zirconium ions fully dispersed, thus leading to the formation of very fine zirconia particles with the diameter of <2 nm in mesoporous Zr-hybrids. The interaction between the 5-sulfosalicylic acid ligands and zirconium ions endowed mesoporous Zr-hybrids with relatively higher acid strength but lower base strength, which was beneficial for the selective reduction of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. A recycling study was performed over a certain mesoporous Zr-hybrid, namely meso-Zr-SA15, demonstrating that the yield and selectivity of furfuryl alcohol remained almost unchanged during the five consecutive reaction cycles. This study provides an optional method to prepare hybrid catalysts for biomass refining by using biomass-derived feedstock.

Microwave-Assisted Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol Employing a Green and Noble Metal-Free Copper Catalyst.

Project description:Green, inexpensive, and robust copper-based heterogeneous catalysts achieve 100 % conversion and 99 % selectivity in the conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol when using cyclopentyl-methyl ether as green solvent and microwave reactors at low H2 pressures and mild temperatures. The utilization of pressurized microwave reactors produces a 3-4 fold increase in conversion and an unexpected enhancement in selectivity as compared to the reaction carried out at the same conditions using conventional autoclave reactors. The enhancement in catalytic rate produced by microwave irradiation is temperature dependent. This work highlights that using microwave irradiation in the catalytic hydrogenation of biomass-derived compounds is a very strong tool for biomass upgrade that offers immense potential in a large number of transformations where it could be a determining factor for commercial exploitation.

Highly selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over Pt nanoparticles supported on g-C3N4 nanosheets catalysts in water.

Project description:Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets were investigated for developing effective Pt catalyst supports for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol in water. The nanosheets with an average thickness of about 3 nm were synthesized by a simple and green method through thermal oxidation etching of bulk g-C3N4 in air. Combined with the unique feature of nitrogen richness and locally conjugated structure, the g-C3N4 nanosheets with a high surface area of 142 m(2) g(-1) were demonstrated to be an excellent supports for loading small-size Pt nanoparticles. Superior furfural hydrogenation activity in water with complete conversion of furfural and high selectivity of furfuryl alcohol (>99%) was observed for g-C3N4 nanosheets supported Pt catalysts. The large specific surface area, uniform dispersion of Pt nanoparticles and the stronger furfural adsorption ability of nanosheets contributed to the considerable catalytic performance. The reusability tests showed that the novel Pt catalyst could maintain high activity and stability in the furfural hydrogenation reaction.

Bimetallic copper- and nickel-rich Cu-Ni phyllosilicate catalysts for the liquid phase selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol.

Project description:Bimetallic Cu-Ni phyllosilicates (Cu-NiPS) with various Ni/Cu ratios (5 : 15, 10 : 10, 15 : 5 wt%) were synthesized using ammonia evaporation hydrothermal method to obtain copper-rich or nickel-rich Cu-Ni alloys. These catalysts were evaluated for the selective hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FA) in the liquid phase under relatively mild conditions (100 °C, 20 bar H2). The bimetallic Cu-NiPS catalysts exhibited excellent dispersion of the Ni-Cu alloy with average particle sizes ranging from 3.8 to 4.8 nm and demonstrated significantly enhanced catalytic performance over the monometallic nickel phyllosilicate (20% NiPS). The copper-rich Ni-Cu alloy (15% Cu-5% NiPS) exhibited the highest FF conversion efficiency (88%) and FA selectivity (90%). This superior performance is attributed to its smallest particle size, higher proportion of Cu0 and the synergistic interactions between Ni and Cu. This synergy effectively stabilizes the carbonyl group while promoting efficient H2 dissociation and FA desorption, thereby facilitating the hydrogenation of FF to FA. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibited excellent recyclability and maintained high conversion efficiency and selectivity over multiple cycles.

Uranium-Doped Zinc, Copper, and Nickel Oxides for Enhanced Catalytic Conversion of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol: A Relativistic DFT Study.

Project description:Transition metal oxides (TMOs) and actinide ones (AnOs) have been widely applied in catalytic reactions due to their excellent physicochemical properties. However, the reaction pathway and mechanism, especially involving TM-An heterometallic centers, remain underexplored. In this respect, relativistic density functional theory (DFT) was used to examine uranium-doped zinc, copper, and nickel oxides for their catalytic activity toward the conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. A comparison was made with their undoped TMOs. It was found that the three TMOs were capable of catalyzing the reaction, where the free energies of adsorption, hydrogenation, and desorption fell between -33.93 and 45.00 kJ/mol. The uranium doping extremely strengthened the adsorption of CuO-U and NiO-U toward furfural, making hydrogenation or desorption much harder. Intriguingly, ZnO-U showed the best catalytic performance among all six catalyst candidates, as its three reaction energies were very small (-10.54-8.12 kJ/mol). The reaction process and mechanism were further addressed in terms of the geometrical, bonding, charge, and electronic properties.

Efficient synthesis of niobium pentoxide nanowires and application in ethanolysis of furfuryl alcohol.

Project description:Nb2O5 nanowires with high specific surface area and crystallinity were prepared by using ammonium oxalate and an acetic acid solvent system. The nanomaterial was applied in ethanolysis of furfuryl alcohol (FA), and the yield of the product, 2-(ethoxymethyl)furan (FEE), achieved was up to 79.6%. Compared to mesoporous Nb2O5 materials and other porous materials, the residence time of FEE on the surface of the catalyst is shorter, and the yield of ethyl levulinate (EL) is lower. Furthermore, a high temperature calcination treatment can change the acid sites and acidity type distribution on the nanowire surface. By XRD, NH3-TPD, IR, and TG-DTA determination methods, it was found that the weak and medium-strong acid sites on the surface of Nb2O5 nanowires were reduced after a 300 °C treatment, and the amount of strong acid was relatively higher. According to the catalytic performance test data and acidity determination, it was concluded that more weak acid and medium-strong acid sites improve the conversion of furfuryl alcohol to FEE, and the strong acid sites promote further conversion of FEE to EL.
