Typification of Oxalisbowiei W.T.Aiton ex G.Don (Oxalidaceae).

ABSTRACT: Oxalisbowiei W.T.Aiton ex G.Don (Oxalidaceae) from South Africa was described in 1831, but has not been typified. Although no preserved material was mentioned in the original description, an illustration by Thomas Duncanson painted a few years earlier would have been available to W.T. Aiton at the time he described it and it matches his description. Therefore this illustration is designated as the lectotype for Oxalisbowiei.

Complete plastome sequence of Averrhoa carambola L. (Oxalidaceae).

Project description:In this study, we determined the complete plastome sequence of Averrhoa carambola L. (Oxalidaceae) (NCBI acc. no. KX364202). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported complete plastome sequence from the order Oxalidales. The gene order and structure of the A. carambola plastome are collinear with the typical plastome of land plants. The complete plastome size is 155,965 bp in length and consists of a large single copy region of 87,217 bp and a small single copy region of 17,496 bp, which are separated by a pair of 25,626-bp-long inverted repeat regions. The overall A-T content of the plastome sequence is 61.2%. The plastome contains 111 genes, of which 77 are protein-coding genes, 30 are tRNA genes, and 4 are rRNA genes. Sixteen genes contain one intron and two genes have two introns. A total of 91 simple sequence loci were identified from the genome. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that A. carambola is a sister group of Euonymus japonicus with 100% bootstrap support.

The correct typification of Tradescantia crassula (Commelinaceae).

Project description:Here, we present evidence that the alleged correction of the typification of Tradescantia crassula recently proposed by Pellegrini, Forzza and Sakuragui is erroneous. Furthermore, we clarify misconceptions concerning the epitype of T. crassula, the specimen B-100521014, which was collected by Friedrich Sello in southern Brazil, and is not original material for T. crassula.

Comparative analysis of plastomes in Oxalidaceae: Phylogenetic relationships and potential molecular markers.

Project description:The wood sorrel family, Oxalidaceae, is mainly composed of annual or perennial herbs, a few shrubs, and trees distributed from temperate to tropical zones. Members of Oxalidaceae are of high medicinal, ornamental, and economic value. Despite the rich diversity and value of Oxalidaceae, few molecular markers or plastomes are available for phylogenetic analysis of the family. Here, we reported four new whole plastomes of Oxalidaceae and compared them with plastomes of three species in the family, as well as the plastome of Rourea microphylla in the closely related family Connaraceae. The eight plastomes ranged in length from 150,673 bp (Biophytum sensitivum) to 156,609 bp (R. microphylla). Genome annotations revealed a total of 129-131 genes, including 83-84 protein-coding genes, eight rRNA genes, 37 tRNA genes, and two to three pseudogenes. Comparative analyses showed that the plastomes of these species have minor variations at the gene level. The smaller plastomes of herbs B. sensitivum and three Oxalis species are associated with variations in IR region sizes, intergenic region variation, and gene or intron loss. We identified sequences with high variation that may serve as molecular markers in taxonomic studies of Oxalidaceae. The phylogenetic trees of selected superrosid representatives based on 76 protein-coding genes corroborated the Oxalidaceae position in Oxalidales and supported it as a sister to Connaraceae. Our research also supported the monophyly of the COM (Celastrales, Oxalidales, and Malpighiales) clade.

Nomenclature and typification of Cathayaargyrophylla (Pinaceae).

Project description:In 1958, Chun and Kuang described Cathaya Chun & Kuang as a new genus of Pinaceae. They included one fossil species, C.loehri (Engelh. & Kink.) Chun & Kuang and two extant species, C.argyrophylla Chun & Kuang and C.nanchuanensis Chun & Kuang. Under Art. 40.1 of the Shenzhen Code, they did not validly publish Cathaya because they did not designate a type species for the generic name. Four years later (Chun and Kuang 1962), they again published on Cathaya (in Chinese) where they cited the 1958 publication and included one species C.argyrophylla (with C.nanchuanensis in synonymy) under Cathaya. According to Art. 40.3, they validated both the generic name Cathaya and C.argyrophylla in 1962. Further examination of the type collection and botanical history of the discovery of C.argyrophylla revealed that the type collection Guang-Fu-Lin-Qu Exped. 00198 consists of 11 duplicates in the South China Institute of Botany (IBSC) and 9 duplicates in other herbaria (GAC, IBK, PE, SZ) and that the intended type specimen (IBSC0000004) consists of two gatherings: the bark, reproductive shoot and seed cones collected in 1955, whereas pollen-bearing cones were collected in 1956. We thus lectotypify the name C.argyrophylla with the specimen Guang-Fu-Lin-Qu Exped. 00198 (IBSC0000004 excl. pollen-bearing cones).

Typification of Juniperus pingii W.C.Cheng (Cupressaceae).

Project description:W.C.Cheng validly published the name Juniperus pingii W.C.Cheng in 1944 by providing a validating Latin diagnosis in de Ferré (1944), but he failed to cite any specimen. He repeated the publication of the name in 1947 with the same Latin diagnosis; he thus published an isonym "J. pingii" under Art. 6 Note 2. Cheng (1947) lectotypified the name J. pingii when he designated W.C.Cheng 1015 as the "type" of the isonym. Farjon (2005) overlooked this early designation and his lectotypification of the name with the illustration from the 1944 protologue is not effective as the W.C.Cheng 1015 specimen is extant.

Typification of 23 names in Eriobotrya (Maleae, Rosaceae).

Project description:As part of a comprehensive systematic study on the genus Eriobotrya and its close relatives from the E & SE Asia, new typifications of 23 names are presented here, along with some nomenclatural notes of the names involved. We lectotypified 22 names including accepted names and synonyms. They are: E. acuminatissima, E. bengalensis var. angustifolia; E. bengalensis f. intermedia, E. brackloi, E. brackloi var. atrichophylla, E. elliptica var. petelotii, E. fragrans var. furfuracea, E. glabrescens, E. grandiflora, E. henryi, E. oblongifolia, E. petiolata, E. platyphylla, E. poilanei, E. prinoides, E. prinoides var. laotica, E. salwinensis, E. serrata, E. stipularis, Hiptage cavaleriei, Photinia longifolia, Symplocos seguinii. One neotype of Photinia dubia was also proposed in this study, and E. pseudoraphiolepis and Mespilus cuila were identified as superfluous names. In addition, we also summarized the typification of 18 names for taxonomic reference: E. angustissima, E. balgooyi, E. condaoensis, E. × daduheensis, E. elliptica, E. fulvicoma, E. fragrans, E. glabrescens var. victoriensis, E. hookeriana, E. latifolia, E. obovata, E. malipoensis, E. merguiensis, E. tengyuehensis, E. wardii, Mespilus bengalensis, Photinia deflexa, and M. japonica.

Oxalisxishuiensis (Oxalidaceae), a new species from Danxia landforms in Guizhou, China.

Project description:Oxalisxishuiensis, a new species of Oxalidaceae from Danxia landforms of Xishui County, Guizhou, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to O.wulingensis by the two lateral leaflets arranged at about 180° angle and oblong pink petals with lilac veins, but clearly differs from the latter by leaflets almost as long as wide, obliquely obcordate lateral leaflets, shorter peduncles, longer capsule (1.2-1.5 cm vs. 0.5-0.7 cm) and alveolate seeds.

Nomenclature and typification in Verbascum (Scrophulariaceae) from North Africa

Project description:Abstract The progress of taxonomic work on native Verbascum L. taxa found in Morocco led to a search for reference specimens in various herbaria. This process was extended to the taxa found in the other four countries of North Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt), which make up the southern shore of the Mediterranean basin. Numerous names were identified as needing typification or requiring corrections of their earlier lectotypifications in order to stabilize their nomenclature and provide a better definition of each taxon. As a result, lectotypes are now designated for 35 names, a neotype is proposed for V.ballii (Batt.) Hub.-Mor., and second-step lectotypes are proposed for V.faureisubsp.acanthifolium (Pau) Benedí & J.M.Monts. and V.pinnatisectum (Batt.) Benedí. Comments have been added for each typified name. Known isolectotypes are also mentioned whenever possible. Furthermore, some new combinations are proposed in this paper, namely V.longirostrevar.antiatlantica (Emb.) Khamar, comb. nov., V.longirostrevar.atlantica (Maire) Khamar, comb. nov., and V.longirostrevar.hoggarica (Maire) Khamar, comb. nov.

Characterization of the complete chloroplast genome of Carya laciniosa (F.Michx.) G.Don (Juglandaceae).

Project description:Carya laciniosa (F.Michx.) G.Don is a slow-growing valuable tree in the family Juglandaceae. In this research, we first reported the chloroplast genome sequence of C. laciniosa. The chloroplast genome was a circular form with 160,832 bp in size, comprising four subregions: a large single-copy (LSC) region of 90,065 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,791 bp, and two copies of inverted repeats (IRs; IRa and IRb) of 25,988 bp each. A total of 132 genes were annotated in the chloroplast genome of C. laciniosa, including 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The overall GC content of the whole genome was 36.14%. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that C. laciniosa was closely related to C. ovata.
