Sorbuslushanensis, a new species of Rosaceae from China.

ABSTRACT: Sorbuslushanensis Xin Chen & Jing Qiu, sp. n. (Rosaceae), a new simple-leaved species belonging to Sorbussubg.Ariasect.Alnifoliae, is described from Anhui and Jiangxi provinces in China. Illustrations, photographs of wild plants and a distribution map are presented. The new species is morphologically similar to S.folgneri, but can be distinguished easily by its abaxially greenish-grey tomentose leaves, scale-like stipules and glabrous styles.

Project description:A new species Rosafuningensis and its variant R.funingensisf.rosea, both collected from Yunnan Province, China, are, for the first time, documented and illustrated in this study. Morphological analysis in comparison with two related species in the wild, R.gigantea and R.rubus, presents distinguishable features through leaf surfaces, inflorescences and the shape of styles. R.funingensis leaf surfaces are abaxially villous, purple-red, pale green when mature, adaxially glabrous, dark green; inflorescences solitary or 2-5(7) in corymbose cyme; and styles connate into a column or not, exserted.

Project description:Eriobotrya laoshanica, a new species of Rosaceae from Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is easily distinguished from the most similar species E. malipoensis K. C. Kuan by its longer petioles (2-5 vs. 0.5-1 cm); indumentum on the lower leaf surfaces (densely tomentose vs. glabrous); much fewer flowers (15- to 30-flowered vs. 50- to 100-flowered) on the panicle; larger flowers (2.5-3 vs. 1.5-2 cm in diameter); and non-angulated (vs. angulated) young fruits.

Eriobotryacrassifolia (Rosaceae), a new species from Yunnan Province, China.

Project description:The new species Eriobotryacrassifolia, collected from Yunnan Province, China, is characterised and illustrated. A phylogeny based on chloroplast genomes supported its closest affinity with E.tengyuehensis, while a phylogeny based on 197 single-copy nuclear genes supported its closest affinity with E.fragrans and E.deflexa. Morphologically, however, it resembles E.angustissima. Nevertheless, it can be easily distinguished from E.angustissima by its abaxially retroflexed and sharply serrate leaf margins, densely rusty tomentose inflorescences, and oblong or elliptic leaves.

Geum sunhangii (Rosaceae), a new species from Hubei Province, China.

Project description:Geum sunhangii - first discovered in Shennongjia National Nature Reserve, Hubei Province, China - is described as a new species of Rosaceae. Compared to all known Chinese Geum species, the new species differs by possessing jointed styles, imbricate petals and a reniform radical leaf terminal leaflet. Most significantly, the jointed style is curved at an obtuse or a right angle. In addition, the inclusion of this species within the genus Geum was supported by phylogenetic analysis using the sequence data of a nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and a chloroplast trnL-trnF intergenic spacer. The new species was found to be closely related to G. rivale and G. aleppicum.

Project description:Sorbus gongshanensis sp. nov., a new species from the Hengduan Mountains China, is described and illustrated. It is similar to S. kurzii from China (Yunnan & Xizang), Nepal, and Sikkim in the size of the leaflets, glabrous veins, persistent (sometimes) herbaceous stipules and reddish brown villous inflorescences and red fruits, but differs in its serrate leaflet margins toothed in the distal half or often almost to their base, reddish brown villous to glabrous hypanthium and reddish brown villous infructescences, among other characteristics.

Rubustingzhouensis (Rosaceae), a new species from Fujian, China.

Project description:Rubustingzhouensis C.An & G.C.Lin, a newly-defined species within the family Rosaceae from Fujian Province, China, is formally described and illustrated here. R.tingzhouensis is morphologically similar to R.swinhoei, but can be distinguished by several key characteristics, such as long, reddish-purple stipitate glands, soft bristles, light yellow short trichomes (vs. shortly grey tomentose at the early stage, glabrescent) and scattered epidermal prickles (vs. few to many curved prickles). Furthermore, the stipules are pinnately deeply laciniate, measuring 1-1.5 cm (vs. ovate-oblong to ovate-lanceolate, 0.5-0.8 cm). Phylogenetic analyses, based on partial sequences and the complete plastome data, provide robust support for a close relationship between R.tingzhouensis and R.swinhoei, while also highlighting distinct genetic differentiation between these two species. The chloroplast genome of R.tingzhouensis is 156,311 bp in length and comprises 132 unique genes, including 86 protein-coding genes, 37 transfer RNAs, eight ribosomal RNAs and one pseudogene.

Four new Phragmidium (Phragmidiaceae, Pucciniomycetes) species from Rosaceae plants in Guizhou Province of China.

Project description:In this study, four new species of Phragmidium were proposed based on morphological and molecular characters. In morphology, Phragmidiumrosae-roxburghii sp. nov. was distinguished to related taxa by its unique square to diamond-shaped urediniospores; Ph.rubi-coreani sp. nov. differed from Ph.barclayi and Ph.cibanum because of teliospores with fewer cells and shorter pedicels; urediniospores of Ph.potentillae-freynianae sp. nov. were bigger than Ph.duchesneae-indicae; and Ph.rosae-laevigatae sp. nov. produced bigger urediniospores than Ph.jiangxiense. The phylogenetic analyses based on the combination of two loci (ITS and LSU) also supported our morphological conclusion. In the meantime, three previously known species were also described herein.

Lachemilla mexiquense (Rosaceae), a new species from Mexico.

Project description:A new species of Lachemilla (Rosaceae), Lachemilla mexiquense D.F. Morales-B., from Mexico is described and illustrated. This species is similar to Lachemilla aphanoides by its tripartite leaves and glomerulate inflorescence with entirely glabrous flowers, but it differs by its stonoliferous habit, persistent basal leaves and basal stipules, and smaller flowers with a campanulate-elongate hypanthium and single carpel. A key to the species of Lachemilla in Mexico is provided.

Rubuspuyumaensis, a new species of Rosaceae from Taiwan.

Project description:BackgroundThe genus Rubus L. (Rosaceae), comprising approximately 750 species and classified into 12 subgenera, is distributed worldwide and is one of the largest plant genera. In Taiwan, Rubus comprises 41 taxa, including 35 species, three varieties and three hybrids. Amongst the genus Rubus, the species, previously recorded as R.howii in Taiwan, was misidentified and this study recognised it as a new species.New informationDue to its distribution mainly in south-eastern Taiwan, we named this new species as Rubuspuyumaensis, after the local aborigine tribe Puyuma. Taxonomic descriptions and colour photographs of the new species are provided to assist in identification. R.puyumaensis is most similar to R.howii and R.refractus. They can be distinguished by the colour of young leaves, leaf shape, arrangement of florets, trichomes of inflorescences, size of sepal lobes, petal colour, types and trichomes of filaments and the length of stamens and pistils.
