Recyclable and Flexible Starch-Ag Networks and Its Application in Joint Sensor.

ABSTRACT: Flexible transparent conductive electrodes are essential component for flexible optoelectronic devices and have been extensively studied in recent years, while most of the researches are focusing on the electrode itself, few topics in material green and recyclability. In this paper, we demonstrate a high-performance transparent conductive electrode (TCE), based on our previous cracking technology, combined with a green and recyclable substrate, a starch film. It not only shows low R_s (less than 1.0 Ω sq^-1), high transparency (> 82%, figure of merit ≈ 10,000), but also provides an ultra-smooth morphology and recyclability. Furthermore, a series of biosensors on human joints are demonstrated, showing great sensitivity and mechanical stability.

Project description:Cutting-edge technologies of stretchable, skin-mountable, and wearable electronics have attracted tremendous attention recently due to their very wide applications and promising performances. One direction of particular interest is to investigate novel properties in stretchable electronics by exploring multifunctional materials. Here, we report an integrated strain sensing system that is highly stretchable, rehealable, fully recyclable, and reconfigurable. This system consists of dynamic covalent thermoset polyimine as the moldable substrate and encapsulation, eutectic liquid metal alloy as the strain sensing unit and interconnects, and off-the-shelf chip components for measuring and magnifying functions. The device can be attached on different parts of the human body for accurately monitoring joint motion and respiration. Such a strain sensing system provides a reliable, economical, and ecofriendly solution to wearable technologies, with wide applications in health care, prosthetics, robotics, and biomedical devices.

Magnetization Manipulation of a Flexible Magnetic Sensor by Controlled Stress Application.

Project description:Spin-based electronic devices on polymer substrates have been intensively investigated because of several advantages in terms of weight, thickness, and flexibility, compared to rigid substrates. So far, most studies have focused on maintaining the functionality of devices with minimum degradation against mechanical deformation, as induced by stretching and bending of flexible devices. Here, we applied repetitive bending stress on a flexible magnetic layer and a spin-valve structure composed of Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/Ni/IrMn/Ta on a polyimide (PI) substrate. It is found that the anisotropy can be enhanced or weakened depending upon the magnetostrictive properties under stress. In the flat state after bending, due to residual compressive stress, the magnetic anisotropy of the positive magnetostrictive free layer is weakened while that of the pinned layer with negative magnetostriction is enhanced. Thus, the magnetic configuration of the spin-valve is appropriate for use as a sensor. Through the bending process, we design a prototype magnetic sensor cell array and successfully show a sensing capability by detecting magnetic microbeads. This attempt demonstrates that appropriate control of stress, induced by repetitive bending of flexible magnetic layers, can be effectively used to modify the magnetic configurations for the magnetic sensor.

Evaporation-Rate Control of Water Droplets on Flexible Transparent Heater for Sensor Application.

Project description:To develop high-performance de- or anti-frosting/icing devices based on transparent heaters, it is necessary to study the evaporation-rate control of droplets on heater surfaces. However, almost no research has been done on the evaporation-rate control of liquid droplets on transparent heaters. In this study, we investigate the evaporation characteristics of water droplets on transparent heater surfaces and determine that they depend upon the surface wettability, by modifying which, the complete evaporation time can be controlled. In addition, we study the defrosting and deicing performances through the surface wettability, by placing the flexible transparent heater on a webcam. The obtained results can be used as fundamental data for the transparent defrosting and deicing systems of closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera lenses, smart windows, vehicle backup cameras, aircraft windows, and sensor applications.

Flexible and Highly Sensitive Humidity Sensor Based on Sandwich-Like Ag/Fe3O4 Nanowires Composite for Multiple Dynamic Monitoring.

Project description:Functional textiles with unique functions, including free cutting, embroidery and changeable shape, will be attractive for smart wear of human beings. Herein, we fabricated a sandwich-like humidity sensor made from silver coated one-dimensional magnetite nanowire (Fe3O4 NW) arrays which were in situ grown on the surface of modified polypropylene nonwoven fabric via simultaneous radiation induced graft polymerization and co-precipitation. The humidity sensor exhibits an obvious response to the relative humidity (RH) ranging from RH 11% to RH 95% and its response value reaches a maximum of 6600% (ΔI/I0) at 95% relative humidity (RH). The humidity sensor can be tailored into various shapes and embroidered on its surface without affecting its functionalities. More interesting, the intensity of its response is proportional to the size of the material. These features permit the sensor to be integrated into commercial textiles or a gas mask to accurately monitor a variety of important human activities including respiration, blowing, speaking and perspiration. Moreover, it also can distinguish different human physical conditions by recognizing respiration response patterns. The sandwich-like sensor can be readily integrated with textiles to fabricate promising smart electronics for human healthcare.

Hierarchical Aerographite 3D flexible networks hybridized by InP micro/nanostructures for strain sensor applications.

Project description:In the present work, we report on development of three-dimensional flexible architectures consisting of an extremely porous three-dimensional Aerographite (AG) backbone decorated by InP micro/nanocrystallites grown by a single step hydride vapor phase epitaxy process. The systematic investigation of the hybrid materials by scanning electron microscopy demonstrates a rather uniform spatial distribution of InP crystallites without agglomeration on the surface of Aerographite microtubular structures. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Raman scattering analysis demonstrate that InP crystallites grown on bare Aerographite are of zincblende structure, while a preliminary functionalization of the Aerographite backbone with Au nanodots promotes the formation of crystalline In2O3 nanowires as well as gold-indium oxide core-shell nanostructures. The electromechanical properties of the hybrid AG-InP composite material are shown to be better than those of previously reported bare AG and AG-GaN networks. Robustness, elastic behavior and excellent translation of the mechanical deformation to variations in electrical conductivity highlight the prospects of AG-InP applications in tactile/strain sensors and other device structures related to flexible electronics.

Recyclable Organocatalyzed Poly(Thiourethane) Covalent Adaptable Networks.

Project description:A new type of tetraphenylborate salts derived from highly basic and nucleophilic amines, namely 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-ene (DBN), 1,8-diazabicyclo(5.4.0)undec-7-ene (DBU) and triazabicyclodecene (TBD), was applied to the preparation of networked poly(thiourethane)s (PTUs), which showed a vitrimer-like behavior, with higher stress-relaxation rates than PTUs prepared by using dibutyl thin dilaurate (DBTDL) as the catalyst. The use of these salts, which release the amines when heated, instead of the pure amines, allows the formulation to be easily manipulated to prepare any type of samples. The materials prepared from stoichiometric mixtures of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), trithiol (S3) and with a 10% of molar excess of isocyanate or thiol were characterized by FTIR, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetry, stress-relaxation tests and tensile tests, thus obtaining a complete thermal and mechanical characterization of the materials. The recycled materials obtained by grinding the original PTUs and hot-pressing the small pieces in the optimized time and temperature conditions were fully characterized by mechanical, thermomechanical and FTIR studies. This allowed us to confirm their recyclability, without appreciable changes in the network structure and performance. From several observations, the dissociative interchange trans-thiocarbamoylation mechanism was evidenced as the main responsible of the topological rearrangements at high temperature, resulting in a vitrimeric-like behavior.

Improved Chloride Ion Sensing Performance of Flexible Ag-NPs/AgCl Electrode Sensor Using Cu-BTC as an Effective Adsorption Layer.

Project description:We designed the flexible chloride ion selective sensor that directly monitors electrochemical reactions of chloride ions without using a reference electrode. A flexible polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate was utilized to provide bendability to the fabricated sensor. As an ion selective material, Ag nanoparticles were employed on the MWCNTs loaded on the PTFE substrate. Enhanced adsorption property of the fabricated sensor toward the chloride ions was given by incorporation of hydrophilic copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) with great flexibility and stability. Accordingly, compared to the bare sensor the sensing performance of the Cu-BTC treated Ag NPs/AgCl electrode sensor was improved by indicating the decrease in response and recovery time about 4 times. It elucidated that the Cu-BTC layer could work as an effective medium between the Ag-NPs surface and electrolyte containing chloride ions. As a result of contact angle measurement, the hydrophilicity much increased in the Cu-BTC treated sensor because the exposed surface of the sensor not treated by the Cu-BTC largely consisted of hydrophobic MWCNTs. Furthermore, the Cu-BTC layer could hold the electrolyte for effective adsorption of analytes with large specific surface area.

Joint Transmit Power Allocation and Splitting for SWIPT Aided OFDM-IDMA in Wireless Sensor Networks.

Project description:In this paper, we propose to combine Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing-Interleave Division Multiple Access (OFDM-IDMA) with Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT), resulting in SWIPT aided OFDM-IDMA scheme for power-limited sensor networks. In the proposed system, the Receive Node (RN) applies Power Splitting (PS) to coordinate the Energy Harvesting (EH) and Information Decoding (ID) process, where the harvested energy is utilized to guarantee the iterative Multi-User Detection (MUD) of IDMA to work under sufficient number of iterations. Our objective is to minimize the total transmit power of Source Node (SN), while satisfying the requirements of both minimum harvested energy and Bit Error Rate (BER) performance from individual receive nodes. We formulate such a problem as a joint power allocation and splitting one, where the iteration number of MUD is also taken into consideration as the key parameter to affect both EH and ID constraints. To solve it, a sub-optimal algorithm is proposed to determine the power profile, PS ratio and iteration number of MUD in an iterative manner. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm can provide significant performance improvement.

Highly Sensitive Ultrathin Flexible Thermoplastic Polyurethane/Carbon Black Fibrous Film Strain Sensor with Adjustable Scaffold Networks.

Project description:In recently years, high-performance wearable strain sensors have attracted great attention in academic and industrial. Herein, a conductive polymer composite of electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fibrous film matrix-embedded carbon black (CB) particles with adjustable scaffold network was fabricated for high-sensitive strain sensor. This work indicated the influence of stereoscopic scaffold network structure built under various rotating speeds of collection device in electrospinning process on the electrical response of TPU/CB strain sensor. This structure makes the sensor exhibit combined characters of high sensitivity under stretching strain (gauge factor of 8962.7 at 155% strain), fast response time (60 ms), outstanding stability and durability (> 10,000 cycles) and a widely workable stretching range (0-160%). This high-performance, wearable, flexible strain sensor has a broad vision of application such as intelligent terminals, electrical skins, voice measurement and human motion monitoring. Moreover, a theoretical approach was used to analyze mechanical property and a model based on tunneling theory was modified to describe the relative change of resistance upon the applied strain. Meanwhile, two equations based from this model were first proposed and offered an effective but simple approach to analyze the change of number of conductive paths and distance of adjacent conductive particles.

Electrodeposition of the MnO2 on the Ag/Au Core-Shell Nanowire and Its Application to the Flexible Supercapacitor.

Project description:Supercapacitors have received considerable attention as energy storage devices owing to their high power density, fast charge/discharge rate, and long cyclic life. Especially with an increasing demand for flexible and wearable devices, research on flexible supercapacitors has surged in recent years. The silver nanowire (Ag NW) network has been used as a flexible electrode owing to its excellent mechanical and electrical properties; however, its use as an electrode for flexible supercapacitors has been limited due to insufficient electrochemical stability. In this study, we proposed a method to resolve this issue. We employed a solution process that enabled the coating of the surface of Ag NW by a thin Au shell of ≈ 5 nm thickness, which significantly improved the electrochemical stability of the Ag NW network electrodes. Furthermore, we confirmed for the first time that MnO2, which is one of the most widely used capacitive materials, can be directly electroplated on the AACS NW network electrode. Finally, we fabricated a high-performance and flexible solid-state supercapacitor using the suggested Ag/Au/MnO2 core-shell NW network electrodes.
