To explore proteolytic activity of endophytic fungi inhabiting date palm roots, a <i>Penicillium bilaiae</i> isolate, displaying the highest level of protease production, has been recovered. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize culture conditions for protease production by the fungus.
