All-optical control of lead halide perovskite microlasers.

ABSTRACT: Lead halide perovskites based microlasers have recently shown their potential in nanophotonics. However, up to now, all of the perovskite microlasers are static and cannot be dynamically tuned in use. Herein, we demonstrate a robust mechanism to realize the all-optical control of perovskite microlasers. In lead halide perovskite microrods, deterministic mode switching takes place as the external excitation is increased: the onset of a new lasing mode switches off the initial one via a negative power slope, while the main laser characteristics are well kept. This mode switching is reversible with the excitation and has been explained via cross-gain saturation. The modal interaction induced mode switching does not rely on sophisticated cavity designs and is generic in a series of microlasers. The switching time is faster than 70 ps, extending perovskite microlasers to previously inaccessible areas, e.g., optical memory, flip-flop, and ultrafast switches etc.

Project description:Lead halide perovskite microlasers have been very promising for versatile optoelectronic applications. However, most perovskite microlasers are linearly polarized with uniform wavefront. The structured laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum have rarely been studied and the applications of perovskites in next-generation optical communications are thus hindered. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate the perovskite vortex microlasers with highly directional outputs and well-controlled topological charges. High quality gratings have been experimentally fabricated in perovskite film and the subsequent vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) with divergent angles of 3o are achieved. With the control of Archimedean spiral gratings, the wavefront of the perovskite VCSELs has been switched to be helical with topological charges of q = -4 to 4. This research is able to expand the potential applications of perovskite microlasers in hybrid integrated photonic networks, as well as optical computing.

Nonlinear terahertz control of the lead halide perovskite lattice.

Project description:Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have emerged as an excellent class of semiconductors for next-generation solar cells and optoelectronic devices. Tailoring physical properties by fine-tuning the lattice structures has been explored in these materials by chemical composition or morphology. Nevertheless, its dynamic counterpart, phonon-driven ultrafast material control, as contemporarily harnessed for oxide perovskites, has not yet been established. Here, we use intense THz electric fields to obtain direct lattice control via nonlinear excitation of coherent octahedral twist modes in hybrid CH3NH3PbBr3 and all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskites. These Raman-active phonons at 0.9 to 1.3 THz are found to govern the ultrafast THz-induced Kerr effect in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase and thus dominate the phonon-modulated polarizability with potential implications for dynamic charge carrier screening beyond the Fröhlich polaron. Our work opens the door to selective control of LHP's vibrational degrees of freedom governing phase transitions and dynamic disorder.

Synthesis and optical properties of lead-free cesium germanium halide perovskite quantum rods.

Project description:Herein, the fabrication of a lead-free cesium germanium halide perovskite produced via a simple solvothermal process is reported for the first time. By tuning the composition of the CsGeX3 quantum rods, a power conversion efficiency of 4.92% under AM 1.5 G was achieved.

Photo-enhanced growth of lead halide perovskite crystals and their electro-optical properties.

Project description:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted much attention for opto-electronic applications due to their low trap density, strong light absorption, and superior charge transport performance. Generally, the high efficiency of perovskite electro-optical thin films depends on their high-quality perovskite single crystals. In this work, the external illumination is applied on the perovskite single crystals growing in solution. It was shown that larger size CH3NH3PbI3 single crystals can be obtained under illumination conditions. In addition, CH3NH3PbI3 films are prepared by a one-step spin coating process under illumination, the crystal size and film quality of which have been obviously improved due to the effect of illumination in the film forming process. The efficiency of the average cells based on CH3NH3PbI3 films increased from 15.2% for the normal conditions to 17.7% for the illumination one, which is consistent with the light enhanced growth of CH3NH3PbI3 single crystals in their solution. The "photo-inhibition nucleation" mechanism is proposed to explain the light-induced enhancement of perovskite crystal growth.

Resonance-enhanced three-photon luminesce via lead halide perovskite metasurfaces for optical encoding.

Project description:Lead halide perovskites have emerged as promising materials for photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. However, their exceptional nonlinear properties have not been fully exploited in nanophotonics yet. Herein we fabricate methyl ammonium lead tri-bromide perovskite metasurfaces and explore their internal nonlinear processes. While both of third-order harmonic generation and three-photon luminescence are generated, the latter one is less affected by the material loss and has been significantly enhanced by a factor of 60. The corresponding simulation reveals that the improvement is caused by the resonant enhancement of incident laser. Interestingly, such kind of resonance-enhanced three-photon luminescence holds true for metasurfaces with a small period number of 4, enabling promising applications of perovskite metasurface in high-resolution nonlinear color nanoprinting and optical encoding. The encoded information 'NANO' is visible only when the incident laser is on-resonance. The off-resonance pumping and the single-photon excitation just produce a uniform dark or photoluminescence background.

Halide Perovskite-Lead Chalcohalide Nanocrystal Heterostructures.

Project description:We report the synthesis of colloidal CsPbX3-Pb4S3Br2 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystal heterostructures, providing an example of a sharp and atomically resolved epitaxial interface between a metal halide perovskite and a non-perovskite lattice. The CsPbBr3-Pb4S3Br2 nanocrystals are prepared by a two-step direct synthesis using preformed subnanometer CsPbBr3 clusters. Density functional theory calculations indicate the creation of a quasi-type II alignment at the heterointerface as well as the formation of localized trap states, promoting ultrafast separation of photogenerated excitons and carrier trapping, as confirmed by spectroscopic experiments. Postsynthesis reaction with either Cl- or I- ions delivers the corresponding CsPbCl3-Pb4S3Br2 and CsPbI3-Pb4S3Br2 heterostructures, thus enabling anion exchange only in the perovskite domain. An increased structural rigidity is conferred to the perovskite lattice when it is interfaced with the chalcohalide lattice. This is attested by the improved stability of the metastable γ phase (or "black" phase) of CsPbI3 in the CsPbI3-Pb4S3Br2 heterostructure.

Formamidinium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocomposite Scintillators.

Project description:While there is great demand for effective, affordable radiation detectors in various applications, many commonly used scintillators have major drawbacks. Conventional inorganic scintillators have a fixed emission wavelength and require expensive, high-temperature synthesis; plastic scintillators, while fast, inexpensive, and robust, have low atomic numbers, limiting their X-ray stopping power. Formamidinium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals show promise as scintillators due to their high X-ray attenuation coefficient and bright luminescence. Here, we used a room-temperature, solution-growth method to produce mixed-halide FAPbX3 (X = Cl, Br) nanocrystals with emission wavelengths that can be varied between 403 and 531 nm via adjustments to the halide ratio. The substitution of bromine for increasing amounts of chlorine resulted in violet emission with faster lifetimes, while larger proportions of bromine resulted in green emission with increased luminescence intensity. By loading FAPbBr3 nanocrystals into a PVT-based plastic scintillator matrix, we produced 1 mm-thick nanocomposite scintillators, which have brighter luminescence than the PVT-based plastic scintillator alone. While nanocomposites such as these are often opaque due to optical scattering from aggregates of the nanoparticles, we used a surface modification technique to improve transmission through the composites. A composite of FAPbBr3 nanocrystals encapsulated in inert PMMA produced even stronger luminescence, with intensity 3.8× greater than a comparative FAPbBr3/plastic scintillator composite. However, the luminescence decay time of the FAPbBr3/PMMA composite was more than 3× slower than that of the FAPbBr3/plastic scintillator composite. We also demonstrate the potential of these lead halide perovskite nanocomposite scintillators for low-cost X-ray imaging applications.

Tuning the Optical Properties of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals by Anion Exchange Reactions.

Project description:We demonstrate that, via controlled anion exchange reactions using a range of different halide precursors, we can finely tune the chemical composition and the optical properties of presynthesized colloidal cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), from green emitting CsPbBr3 to bright emitters in any other region of the visible spectrum, and back, by displacement of Cl(-) or I(-) ions and reinsertion of Br(-) ions. This approach gives access to perovskite semiconductor NCs with both structural and optical qualities comparable to those of directly synthesized NCs. We also show that anion exchange is a dynamic process that takes place in solution between NCs. Therefore, by mixing solutions containing perovskite NCs emitting in different spectral ranges (due to different halide compositions) their mutual fast exchange dynamics leads to homogenization in their composition, resulting in NCs emitting in a narrow spectral region that is intermediate between those of the parent nanoparticles.

Effect of PbSO4-Oleate Coverage on Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots to Control Halide Exchange Kinetics.

Project description:The selective control of halide ion exchange in metal halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) plays an important role in determining their band gap and composition. In this study, CsPbX3 (X = Cl-, Br-, and I-) PQDs were self-assembled with PbSO4-oleate to form a peapod-like morphology to selectively control halide ion exchange. Considering the distinct absorption and bright luminescence characteristics of these PQDs, in situ UV-Vis. absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies were employed to monitor the time-dependent band gap and compositional changes of the PQDs. We determined that the halide exchange in the capped PQDs is hindered-unlike the rapid anion exchange in noncapped PQDs-by a reduction in the halide exchange kinetic rate depending on the extent of coverage of the PQDs. Thus, we tracked the halide ion exchange kinetics between CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 PQDs, depending on the coverage, using in situ UV-Vis. absorption/photoluminescence spectroscopy. We regulated the halide exchange reaction rate by varying the capping reaction temperature of the PQDs. The capping hindered the halide exchange kinetics and increased the activation energy. These results will enable the development of white LEDs, photovoltaic cells, and photocatalysts with alternative structural designs based on the divalent composition of CsPbX3 PQDs.

A lead-halide perovskite molecular ferroelectric semiconductor.

Project description:Inorganic semiconductor ferroelectrics such as BiFeO3 have shown great potential in photovoltaic and other applications. Currently, semiconducting properties and the corresponding application in optoelectronic devices of hybrid organo-plumbate or stannate are a hot topic of academic research; more and more of such hybrids have been synthesized. Structurally, these hybrids are suitable for exploration of ferroelectricity. Therefore, the design of molecular ferroelectric semiconductors based on these hybrids provides a possibility to obtain new or high-performance semiconductor ferroelectrics. Here we investigated Pb-layered perovskites, and found the layer perovskite (benzylammonium)2PbCl4 is ferroelectric with semiconducting behaviours. It has a larger ferroelectric spontaneous polarization Ps=13 μC cm(-2) and a higher Curie temperature Tc=438 K with a band gap of 3.65 eV. This finding throws light on the new properties of the hybrid organo-plumbate or stannate compounds and provides a new way to develop new semiconductor ferroelectrics.
