Ferrocene-Modified Polyelectrolyte Film-Coated Electrode and Its Application in Glucose Detection.

ABSTRACT: A polyelectrolyte film-coated electrode for the quantitative detection of glucose was reported. Carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide and polyelectrolyte with a ferrocenyl group were used to modify an enzyme electrode to facilitate the electron transfer between glucose oxidase and the electrode. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometric methods were adopted to investigate the effects of different polyelectrolytes and carbon nanomaterials on the electrochemical properties of enzyme electrodes. The results indicate that the ferrocenyl groups on a polyelectrolyte skeleton act as a mediator between the redox center of glucose oxidase and the electrode, which efficiently enhances the electron transfer between a glassy carbon electrode and glucose oxidase. The calibration curve of the sensor shows a linear range from 0.2 to 5 mM for glucose response. The sensor can achieve 95% of the steady-state current within 10 s. The electrodes also present high operational stability and long-term storage stability.

Copper/reduced graphene oxide film modified electrode for non-enzymatic glucose sensing application.

Project description:Numerous studies suggest that modification with functional nanomaterials can enhance the electrode electrocatalytic activity, sensitivity, and selectivity of the electrochemical sensors. Here, a highly sensitive and cost-effective disposable non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on copper(II)/reduced graphene oxide modified screen-printed carbon electrode is demonstrated. Facile fabrication of the developed sensing electrodes is carried out by the adsorption of copper(II) onto graphene oxide modified electrode, then following the electrochemical reduction. The proposed sensor illustrates good electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation with a wide linear detection range from 0.10 mM to 12.5 mM, low detection limit of 65 µM, and high sensitivity of 172 μA mM-1 cm-2 along with satisfactory anti-interference ability, reproducibility, stability, and the acceptable recoveries for the detection of glucose in a human serum sample (95.6-106.4%). The copper(II)/reduced graphene oxide based sensor with the superior performances is a great potential for the quantitation of glucose in real samples.

Nafion-coated cadmium pentacyanonitrosylferrate-modified glassy carbon electrode for detection of dopamine in biological samples.

Project description:Introduction : Dopamine is one of the key neurotransmitters (NTs) in nature, which plays a crucial role in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Its selective determination in the biological fluids is an essential need in the field of biomedicine studies. Methods : In this work, an amperometric sensor was developed using Nafion-coated cadmium pentacyanonitrosylferrate (CdPCNF) modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode (Nafion|CdPCNF|GC electrode) as an electrocatalyst to detect dopamine (DA) in human serum samples. To develop this sensor, the surface of bare GC electrode was coated with the film of CdPCNF through an electropolymerization method and then the modified electrode was coated with Nafion to minimize interferences, especially those arising from the presence of anionic compounds. The electrocatalytic behavior of the modified electrodes was studied using the cyclic voltammetry and amperometry, and then the ability of the sensor for the determination of DA in synthetic and biological samples was investigated. Results : The modified electrode was showed a significant electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of DA at pH 7.4. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.7 µM and also no interference effects arose from ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (UA) or the other biological NTs was observed in the DA detection using the modified Nafion|CdPCNF|GC electrode. Conclusion : In comparison with the bare electrode, the Nafion|CdPCNF|GC electrode could determine DA in the biological samples with adequate sensitivity and selectivity. Therefore, we propose that the modified electrode is utilizable as an amperometric DA sensor for the biological sample analysis.

On-Chip Glucose Detection Based on Glucose Oxidase Immobilized on a Platinum-Modified, Gold Microband Electrode.

Project description:We report the microfabrication and characterization of gold microband electrodes on silicon using standard microfabrication methods, i.e., lithography and etching techniques. A two-step electrodeposition process was carried out using the on-chip platinum reference and gold counter electrodes, thus incorporating glucose oxidase onto a platinum-modified, gold microband electrode with an o-phenylenediamine and ß-cyclodextrin mixture. The as-fabricated electrodes were studied using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The two-step electrodeposition process was conducted in low sample volumes (50 µL) of both solutions required for biosensor construction. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were utilised for electrochemical characterization at each stage of the deposition process. The enzymatic-based microband biosensor demonstrated a linear response to glucose from 2.5-15 mM, using both linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometric measurements in buffer-based solutions. The biosensor performance was examined in 30 µL volumes of fetal bovine serum. Whilst a reduction in the sensor sensitivity was evident within 100% serum samples (compared to buffer media), the sensor demonstrated linear glucose detection with increasing glucose concentrations (5-17 mM).

Modified Graphite Pencil Electrode Based on Graphene Oxide-Modified Fe3O4 for Ferrocene-Mediated Electrochemical Detection of Hemoglobin.

Project description:This study describes the synthesis of graphene oxide-modified magnetite (rGO/Fe3O4) and its use as an electrochemical sensor for the quantitative detection of hemoglobin (Hb). rGO is characterized by a 2θ peak at 10.03° in its X-ray diffraction, 1353 and 1586 cm-1 vibrations in Raman spectroscopy, while scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy of rGO and rGO/Fe3O4 revealed the presence of microplate structures in both materials and high presence of iron in rGO/Fe3O4 with 50 wt %. The modified graphite pencil electrode, GPE/rGO/Fe3O4, is characterized using cyclic voltammetry. Higher electrochemical surface area is obtained when the GPE is modified with rGO/Fe3O4. Linear scan voltammetry is used to quantify Hb at the surface of the sensor using ferrocene (FC) as an electrochemical amplifier. Linear response for Hb is obtained in the 0.1-1.8 μM range with a regression coefficient of 0.995, a lower limit of detection of 0.090 μM, and a limit of quantitation of 0.28 μM. The sensor was free from interferents and successfully used to sense Hb in human urine. Due to the above-stated qualities, the GPE/rGO/Fe3O4 electrode could be a potential competitive sensor for trace quantities of Hb in physiological media.

Superficial fabrication of gold nanoparticles modified CuO nanowires electrode for non-enzymatic glucose detection.

Project description:This paper describes a low-cost facile method to construct gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) modified copper oxide (CuO) nanowires (NWs) electrode on copper foil for the detection of glucose. Copper foil has been converted to aligned CuO NWs arrays by sequential formation of Cu(OH)2 followed by heat treatment induced phase transformation to CuO. Au NPs are deposited on CuO NWs via simple reductive solution chemistry to impart high surface to volume ratio and enhanced catalytic activity of the resulting electrode. Structure, microstructure and morphology of Cu, Cu(OH)2 NWs, CuO NWs, and Au NPs modified CuO NWs are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The homogeneous distribution of Au NPs (average diameter ∼12 nm) on CuO NWs (average diameter 100 nm and aspect ratio ∼20) is confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and elemental mapping. This CuO based glucose detection method gives the highest sensitivity along with the maximum linearity range. This non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on Au modified CuO NWs electrode gives broad linearity range from 0.5 μM to 5.9 mM. The sensor exhibits sensitivity of 4398.8 μA mM-1 cm-2, lower detection limit of 0.5 μM, and very fast response time of ∼5 s. Properties of the proposed glucose sensor are also investigated in human blood and it is found that the sensor is highly accurate and reliable. In addition, higher sensitivity and lower detection limit confirm that this device is suitable for invasive detection in saliva and urine.

Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Sensor Based on Polyelectrolyte Composite Film Decorated Glassy Carbon Electrode for Detection of Nitrite in Curing Food at Sub-Micromolar Level.

Project description:To ensure food quality and safety, developing cost-effective, rapid and precision analytical techniques for quantitative detection of nitrite is highly desirable. Herein, a novel electrochemical sensor based on the sodium cellulose sulfate/poly (dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (NaCS/PDMDAAC) composite film modified glass carbon electrode (NaCS/PDMDAAC/GCE) was proposed toward the detection of nitrite at sub-micromolar level, aiming to make full use of the inherent properties of individual component (biocompatible, low cost, good electrical conductivity for PDMDAAC; non-toxic, abundant raw materials, good film forming ability for NaCS) and synergistic enhancement effect. The NaCS/PDMDAAC/GCE was fabricated by a simple drop-casting method. Electrochemical behaviors of nitrite at NaCS/PDMDAAC/GCE were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under optimum conditions, the NaCS/PDMDAAC/GCE exhibits a wide linear response region of 4.0 × 10-8 mol·L-1~1.5 × 10-4 mol·L-1 and a low detection 1imit of 43 nmol·L-1. The NaCS/PDMDAAC shows a synergetic enhancement effect toward the oxidation of nitrite, and the sensing performance is much better than the previous reports. Moreover, the NaCS/PDMDAAC also shows good stability and reproducibility. The NaCS/PDMDAAC/GCE was successfully applied to the determination of nitrite in ham sausage with satisfactory results.

Electrochemical Detection of Hydrazine by Carbon Paste Electrode Modified with Ferrocene Derivatives, Ionic Liquid, and CoS2-Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposite.

Project description:The electrocatalytic performance of carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with ferrocene-derivative (ethyl2-(4-ferrocenyl[1,2,3]triazol-1-yl)acetate), ionic liquid (n-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate), and CoS2-carbon nanotube nanocomposite (EFTA/IL/CoS2-CNT/CPE) was investigated for the electrocatalytic detection of hydrazine. CoS2-CNT nanocomposite was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. According to the results of cyclic voltammetry, the EFTA/IL/CoS2-CNT-integrated CPE has been accompanied by greater catalytic activities for hydrazine oxidation compared to the other electrodes in phosphate buffer solution at a pH 7.0 as a result of the synergistic impact of fused ferrocene-derivative, IL, and nanocomposite. The sensor responded linearly with increasing concentration of hydrazine from 0.03 to 500.0 μM with a higher sensitivity (0.073 μA μM-1) and lower limit of detection (LOD, 0.015 μM). Furthermore, reasonable reproducibility, lengthy stability, and excellent selectivity were also attained for the proposed sensor. Finally, EFTA/IL/CoS2-CNT/CPE was applied for the detection of hydrazine in water samples, and good recoveries varied from 96.7 to 103.0%.

Application of LTA zeolite-modified electrode for sensitive detection of retinoic acid in tap water.

Project description:An electrochemical method based on a Linde Type-A zeolite-modified glass carbon electrode (LTA/GCE) was introduced for the determination of retinoic acid (RA). LTA zeolite could be synthesized through a hydrothermal method and served as a commercial electrochemical sensor with high stability and sensitivity in electrochemical progress. The as-synthesized product was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Under optimal conditions, a detection limit of 0.8 μM was obtained for RA with a linear range of 0.8-20.1 μM. This electrochemical method for determining RA was simpler and cheaper than previously reported methods. Furthermore, the modified electrode could be applied to the detection of RA in tap water, achieving a linear range of 1.4-15.0 μM with a detection limit of 1.4 μM and good recovery. The modified electrode designed by this method provided good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility for RA determination and reliable application for the analysis of RA in environmental water.

Vertically oriented mesoporous silica film modified fluorine-doped tin oxide electrode for enhanced electrochemiluminescence detection of lidocaine in serum.

Project description:Owing to a nanochannel-based enrichment effect and anti-fouling ability, highly ordered and vertically oriented mesoporous silica thin film (VMSF) modified electrodes have demonstrated their great potential in direct and highly sensitive analysis of complex samples. In this work, a VMSF modified fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode (VMSF/FTO) is fabricated for enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) analysis of lidocaine in serum. VMSF with good integrity and mechanical stability can be rapidly and conveniently grown on FTO in a few seconds at room temperature using an electrochemically assisted self-assembly (EASA) method. Due to the strong electrostatic attraction between the cationic ECL probe and negatively charged nanochannel, the VMSF/FTO electrode shows significant enrichment of tris(2,2-bipyridine) ruthenium(ii) (Ru(bpy)3 2+), leading to ∼10 times enhancement of its ECL signal in comparison to the bare FTO electrode. Lidocaine, an anesthetic and antiarrhythmic drug, can act as the co-reactant of Ru(bpy)3 2+ and promote its ECL signal. Sensitive ECL detection of lidocaine is achieved by the sensor in a wide linear range from 10 nM to 50 μM with a low limit-of-detection (LOD) of 8 nM. Combined with the antifouling ability of VMSF, the VMSF/FTO electrode also realizes the accurate and rapid analysis of lidocaine in real serum samples.

Preparation and Characterization of AgNPs In Situ Synthesis on Polyelectrolyte Membrane Coated Sericin/Agar Film for Antimicrobial Applications.

Project description:Antibacterial materials are of great importance in preventing bacterial adhesion and reproduction in daily life. Silver nanoparticle (AgNP) is a broad-spectrum antibacterial nanomaterial that has attracted significant attentions for its ability to endow natural materials with antibacterial ability. Silk sericin (SS) has a great advantage for biomaterial application, as it is a natural protein with excellent hydrophilicity and biodegradability. In this study, we prepared AgNPs and polyelectrolyte membrane (PEM) modified SS/Agar films through the layer-by-layer adsorption technique and ultraviolet-assisted AgNPs synthesis method. The film was well characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Other properties such as water contact angle, wettability and tensile strength, the release of silver were also studied. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs-PEM-SS/Agar film was investigated against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as the model microorganisms by the inhibition zone and bacterial growth curve assays. The results suggested that the AgNPs-PEM-SS/Agar film had excellent mechanical performance, high hydrophilicity, prominent water absorption ability, as well as outstanding and durable antibacterial activity. Therefore, the prepared novel AgNPs-PEM-SS/Agar composite film is proposed as a potentially favorable antibacterial biomaterial for biomedical applications.
