Azaindolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazoles: New Building Blocks for Functional Organic Materials.

ABSTRACT: The preparation and characterization of 12 azaindolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazoles is presented. Ring-closing C-H activation allowed for the convenient preparation of six singly and six doubly nitrogen-substituted indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole derivatives in which ten of the materials have not been described in the literature before. The detailed photophysical and electrochemical characterization of the developed materials revealed a significant impact of the incorporation of pyridine-like nitrogen into the fully planar indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole backbone. Furthermore, the nitrogen position decisively impacted intermolecular hydrogen bonding and thus the solid-state alignment. Ultimately, the versatility of the azaindolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazoles scaffold makes this class of materials an attractive new building block for the design of functional organic materials.

Thienopyrrolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazoles: Building Blocks for Functional Organic Materials.

Project description:The facile preparation of three regioisomeric thienopyrrolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazoles applying a convenient C-H activation approach is presented. The incorporation of thiophene into the triarylamine framework significantly impacted the molecular properties in comparison to the analogous indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole scaffold. Dependent on the exact substitution pattern, the absorption onsets of the new materials are shifted toward slightly higher wavelengths compared to the analogous indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole, whereas the emission maxima of the sulfur derivatives is shifted from 375 to 410 nm. In analogy, the HOMO-LUMO energy gap of the thienopyrrolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazoles is reduced compared to indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole. Therefore, the developed thienopyrrolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazoles enrich the family of triarylamine donors and constitute a novel building block for functional organic materials.

Geminal-Based Strategies for Modeling Large Building Blocks of Organic Electronic Materials.

Project description:We elaborate on unconventional electronic structure methods based on geminals and their potential to advance the rapidly developing field of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Specifically, we focus on the computational advantages of geminal-based methods over standard approaches and identify the critical aspects of OPV development. Examples are reliable and efficient computations of orbital energies, electronic spectra, and van der Waals interactions. Geminal-based models can also be combined with quantum embedding techniques and a quantum information analysis of orbital interactions to gain a fundamental understanding of the electronic structures and properties of realistic OPV building blocks. Furthermore, other organic components present in, for instance, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) represent another promising scope of application. Finally, we provide numerical examples predicting the properties of a small building block of OPV components and two carbazole-based dyes proposed as possible DSSC sensitizers.

Multi-Resonant Indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole-Based Host for Blue Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes.

Project description:In organic light-emitting diodes, positive and negative charge carriers mostly migrate at different rates. This could result in excitons formed in the EML often migrating to the vicinity of the hole transport layer and the electron transport layer. To address this, it is important to design high-quality multi-resonance hosts that can balance the migration rate of carriers. Here, we report two newly developed multi-resonance hosts, m-ICzPBI and o-ICzPBI. The hosts contain an indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole (ICz) motif, which functionalized as either a donor or an acceptor unit. The hosts exhibit extremely high molecular rigidity and thermal stability. Devices A and B were constructed using FIrpic as a phosphorescent emitter with m-ICzPBI or o-ICzPBI as a host. Device A achieved high maximum values of EQE, PE and CE of 13.4%, 24.8 lm W-1 and 31.6 cd A-1, respectively, and low efficiency roll-off at 5000 cd m-2 of 8.6%, 10.6 lm W-1 and 20.3 cd A-1, respectively.

Biazulene diimides: a new building block for organic electronic materials.

Project description:Azulene, a 10-π-electron isomer of naphthalene, is a nonbenzenoid bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a beautiful blue color and a large dipole moment. We present here the first class of azulene-based aromatic diimides, 2,2'-biazulene-1,1',3,3'-tetracarboxylic diimides (BAzDIs), which comprise a 2,2'-biazulene moiety and two seven-membered imide groups. DFT calculations, thermal, optical and electrochemical properties of two BAzDI derivatives as well as single crystal analysis and the charge transport behavior were studied. The results demonstrate that BAzDIs have unique photophysical properties and are promising for organic electronic materials.

Controlling excimer formation in indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole/9H-carbazole based host materials for RGB PhOLEDs.

Project description:Three novel materials (5CzICz, Cz2ICz and Cz3ICz), based on the indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole and 9H-carbazole building blocks, with high triplet energies (E T > 2.80 eV) and good thermal stability (T g > 101 °C) were synthesized, characterized and applied as host materials in PhOLED devices. In course of the preparation of the materials, an improved protocol for the synthesis of the indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole moiety has been developed. The careful molecular design of the title compounds allowed to avoid excimer formation of the indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole subunits in thin films. Therefore, the improved molecular design broadened the applicability of indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole host materials and significantly enhanced the efficiency of PhOLED devices based on these derivatives compared to previously reported indolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazole based compounds. Accordingly, employing the newly developed materials red (CEmax: 32.7 cd A-1, PEmax: 31.0 lm W-1, EQEmax: 20.4%), green (CEmax: 81.0 cd A-1, PEmax: 87.4 lm W-1, EQEmax: 21.5%) and blue (CEmax: 35.5 cd A-1, PEmax: 39.9 lm W-1, EQEmax: 18.0%) PhOLED devices with a remarkably low efficiency roll-off at 1000 cd m-2 (Cz2ICz - red: 5%; green: 0%; blue: 6%) were fabricated.

Supramolecular Rings as Building Blocks for Stimuli-Responsive Materials.

Project description:Stimuli-responsive polymers are of great interest due to their ability to translate changing environmental conditions into responses in defined materials. One possibility to impart such behavior is the incorporation of optically active molecules into a polymer host. Here, we describe how sensor molecules that consist of a π-extended benzothiadiazole emitter and a naphthalene diimide quencher can be exploited in this context. The two optically active entities were connected via different spacers and, thanks to attractive intramolecular interactions between them, the new sensor molecules assembled into cyclic structures in which the fluorescence was quenched by up to 43% when compared to solutions of the individual dyes. Detailed spectroscopic investigations of the sensor molecules in solution show that the extent of donor/acceptor interactions is influenced by various factors, including solvent polarity and ion concentration. The new sensor molecule was covalently incorporated into a polyurethane; the investigation of the optical characteristics in both the solid and solvent-swollen states indicates that a stimulus-induced formation of associated dye pairs is possible in polymeric materials. Indeed, a solvatochromic quenching effect similar to the behavior in solution was observed for solvent-swollen polymer samples, leading to an effective change of the green emission color of the dye to a yellow color.

Concise synthesis of 3-alkylthieno[3,2-b]thiophenes; building blocks for organic electronic and optoelectronic materials.

Project description:Four step synthesis of 3-alkylthieno[3,2-b]thiophenes in the literature was reduced to two steps in good yields, through the preparation of the mono ketone, i.e. 1-(thiophene-3-ylthio)alkan-2-one, from 3-bromothiophene and ring formation reaction. This convenient method provides an easy access with good yields to the preparation of 3-alkylthieno[3,2-b]thiophenes, which are important materials for organic electronic and optoelectronic applications. SEM, AFM and contact angle (CA) analyses of their electropolymers on indium tin oxide (ITO) indicated that as the alkyl chains became longer, the polymers provide a more hydrophobic layer with CA up to 107°.

Broadly Applicable Synthesis of Arylated Dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrroles as Building Blocks for Organic Electronic Materials.

Project description:A novel and versatile method for the N-arylation of dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole (DTP) is presented. By Pd- or Cu-catalyzed coupling a variety of arenes and acenes were directly attached at the DTP-nitrogen yielding a variety of functionalized DTPs. Investigations on optical and redox properties led to valuable structure-property relationships, which were corroborated by quantum chemical calculations. Further functionalization and elongation of the conjugation of an acceptor-substituted DTP was elaborated to result in complex cruciform-type donor-acceptor oligomers, which were investigated and implemented in single material organic solar cells.

Fluorinated Organic Paramagnetic Building Blocks for Cross-Coupling Reactions.

Project description:New stable polyfluorinated nitroxide radicals for use in cross-coupling reactions, namely, N-tert-butyl-N-oxyamino-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-iodobenzene and N-tert-butyl-N-oxyamino-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-ethynylbenzene, were prepared from perfluoroiodobenzene. The reaction of the polyfluoro derivative with tert-butylamine under autoclaving conditions leading to the formation of N-tert-butyl-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-iodoaniline proved to be the key stage of the whole process. The fluorinated tert-butyl iodophenyl nitroxide was found to form in a solid state via N-O···I halogen bonds, a one-dimensional assembly of the radicals. The acceptor role of the nitroxide group in the halogen bonding changes to a donor role when the nitroxide reacts with Cu(hfac)2. In the last case, zero-dimensional assembly prevails, giving a three-spin complex with axial coordinated nitroxide groups and, as a consequence, causing ferromagnetic intramolecular exchange interactions between Cu(II) and radical spins.

Hyperbranched, Functional Polyethoxysiloxanes: Tunable Molecular Building Blocks.

Project description:Functional silanes are multifaceted cross-linkers, compatibilizers, coupling agents, and surface modifiers. Herein, we present organofunctional polysiloxane building blocks that offer great versatility in terms of molecular weight, degree of condensation, and the choice and loading of organic substituent groups. The organofunctional polyethoxysilanes (funPEOS) are prepared in a one-pot, two-step process: synthesis of the PEOS carrier/substrate, followed by grafting a functional silane "shell", both based on condensation with acetic anhydride. The reaction was optimized at the lab scale and scaled up to a 7 L reactor. The acetylation, condensation, and hyperbranched structure of the carrier were confirmed by 29Si NMR, while 29Si-29Si 2D INADEQUATE NMR provides strong evidence for the grafting of functional silanes onto the carrier (Q-T coupling). IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy demonstrate that the functional groups remain intact. The molar mass can be tailored by stoichiometric control of the acetic anhydride to silane monomer ratio (M n 3500-20,000 g/mol). The compounds are stable organic liquids with a long shelf life. Selected applications are presented: scratch-resistant coatings with water contact angles of ∼90°, stable water emulsions, and surfactant-free, mesoporous silica foams.
