The emergence of cost effective battery storage.

ABSTRACT: Energy storage will be key to overcoming the intermittency and variability of renewable energy sources. Here, we propose a metric for the cost of energy storage and for identifying optimally sized storage systems. The levelized cost of energy storage is the minimum price per kWh that a potential investor requires in order to break even over the entire lifetime of the storage facility. We forecast the dynamics of this cost metric in the context of lithium-ion batteries and demonstrate its usefulness in identifying an optimally sized battery charged by an incumbent solar PV system. Applying the model to residential solar customers in Germany, we find that behind-the-meter storage is economically viable because of the large difference between retail rates and current feed-in tariffs. In contrast, investment incentives for battery systems in California derive principally from a state-level subsidy program.

Cost-Effective Yarn-Shaped Lithium-Ion Battery with High Wearability.

Project description:Because of flexibility, compactness, weavability, and ergonomic design, yarn-shaped lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have enormous potential applications in wearable electronics. Still, the yarn-shaped LIB with the ability to meet commercialization requirements has never been reported, owing to the current challenge in complex material synthesis technologies, expensive raw material costs, poor safety performance, and nonstandard manufacturing equipment. Herein, we propose a yarn-shaped LIB that meets the aforementioned requirements. With a highly conductive and flexible stainless-steel yarn acting as the current collector, the electrode active materials and the gel electrolyte, which are commercially available at low cost, are uniformly coated onto the stainless-steel yarn by a simple and facile dipping-drying method. Even at different deformation conditions (i.e., bending or knotting), the specific capacity of the yarn-shaped LIB (7 cm long, <2 mm in diameter) assembled from graphite and lithium iron phosphate electrodes is maintained >85%. After charged treatment, it can successfully power up an electronic watch and an electronic thermo-hygrometer. Thanks to the simple preparation process, low cost of raw materials, and good safety performance, this work can promote the commercialization of wearable energy storage devices.

Cost-Effective DNA Storage System with DNA Movable Type.

Project description:In the face of exponential data growth, DNA-based storage offers a promising solution for preserving big data. However, most existing DNA storage methods, akin to traditional block printing, require costly chemical synthesis for each individual data file, adopting a sequential, one-time-use synthesis approach. To overcome these limitations, a novel, cost-effective "DNA-movable-type storage" system, inspired by movable type printing, is introduced. This system utilizes prefabricated DNA movable types-short, double-stranded DNA oligonucleotides encoding specific payload, address, and checksum data. These DNA-MTs are enzymatically ligated/assembled into cohesive sequences, termed "DNA movable type blocks," streamlining the assembly process with the automated BISHENG-1 DNA-MT inkjet printer. Using BISHENG-1, 43.7 KB of data files are successfully printed, assembled, stored, and accurately retrieved in diverse formats (text, image, audio, and video) in vitro and in vivo, using only 350 DNA-MTs. Notably, each DNA-MT, synthesized once (2 OD), can be used up to 10000 times, reducing costs to $122/MB-outperforming existing DNA storage methods. This innovation circumvents the need to synthesize entire DNA sequences encoding files from scratch, offering significant cost and efficiency advantages. Furthermore, it has considerable untapped potential to advance a robust DNA storage system, better meeting the extensive data storage demands of the big-data era.

A generic, cost-effective and scalable cell lineage analysis platform

Project description:Advances in single-cell genomics enable commensurate improvements in methods for uncovering lineage relations among individual cells. Current sequencing based methods for cell lineage analysis depend on low resolution bulk analysis or rely on extensive single cell sequencing which is not scalable and could be biased by functional dependencies. Here we show an integrated biochemical-computational platform for generic single-cell lineage analysis that is retrospective, cost-effective and scalable. It consists of a biochemical-computational pipeline that inputs individual cells, produces targeted single-cell sequencing data and uses it to generate a lineage tree of the input cells. We validated the platform by applying it to cells sampled from an ex vivo grown tree and analyzed its feasibility landscape by computer simulations. We conclude that the platform may serve as a generic tool for lineage analysis and thus pave the way towards large-scale human cell lineage discovery.

A cost-effective alkaline polysulfide-air redox flow battery enabled by a dual-membrane cell architecture.

Project description:With the rapid development of renewable energy harvesting technologies, there is a significant demand for long-duration energy storage technologies that can be deployed at grid scale. In this regard, polysulfide-air redox flow batteries demonstrated great potential. However, the crossover of polysulfide is one significant challenge. Here, we report a stable and cost-effective alkaline-based hybrid polysulfide-air redox flow battery where a dual-membrane-structured flow cell design mitigates the sulfur crossover issue. Moreover, combining manganese/carbon catalysed air electrodes with sulfidised Ni foam polysulfide electrodes, the redox flow battery achieves a maximum power density of 5.8 mW cm-2 at 50% state of charge and 55 °C. An average round-trip energy efficiency of 40% is also achieved over 80 cycles at 1 mA cm-2. Based on the performance reported, techno-economic analyses suggested that energy and power costs of about 2.5 US$/kWh and 1600 US$/kW, respectively, has be achieved for this type of alkaline polysulfide-air redox flow battery, with significant scope for further reduction.

Toward a Low-Cost Alkaline Zinc-Iron Flow Battery with a Polybenzimidazole Custom Membrane for Stationary Energy Storage.

Project description:Alkaline zinc-iron flow battery is a promising technology for electrochemical energy storage. In this study, we present a high-performance alkaline zinc-iron flow battery in combination with a self-made, low-cost membrane with high mechanical stability and a 3D porous carbon felt electrode. The membrane could provide high hydroxyl ion conductivity while resisting zinc dendrites well owing to its high mechanical stability. The 3D porous carbon felt could serve as a guidance for the zinc stripping/plating, which can effectively suppress zinc dendrite/accumulation as well. Thus this battery demonstrates a coulombic efficiency of 99.5% and an energy efficiency of 82.8% at 160 mA cm?2, which is the highest value among recently reported flow battery systems. The battery can stably run for more than 500 cycles, showing very good stability. Most importantly, the practicability of this battery is confirmed by assembling a kilowatt cell stack with capital cost under $90/kWh.

A cost-effective method for double stranded cDNA synthesis for microarray analysis

Project description:DNA microarrays are two-dimensional arrangements of specific probes deposited on a substrate that have been widely used in gene expression analysis by measuring mRNA accumulation. The use of this type of microarrays involves the synthesis of cDNA, which has to be double stranded (ds) if the microarray probes are of the positive strand. We have used a custom-synthesized non-commercial NimbleGen microarray from melon to evaluate an alternative method of ds cDNA synthesis, which differs substantially in its economical cost relative to a widely recommended method. The results suggested that both methods produce cDNA representative of the melon transcriptome to a similar extent, indicating that the alternative technique provides a cheaper method of ds cDNA synthesis for microarray gene expression assays. Recently, we have analyzed the transcriptome of melon in response to WMV infection. Cotyledons of two genotypes of melon were virus inoculated and transcriptomic responses to the infection were analyzed by comparing infected and mock inoculated samples at 1, 3, and 7 days post-inoculation (dpi). Three biological replicates were performed for each sample. Double stranded cDNA was obtained with the Double stranded cDNA synthesis kit (Invitrogen, Carlsbad, CA, USA), based on the nick translation approach (Mol. Cell. Biol (1982) 2:161-170; Gene (1983) 25:263-269). Raw and processed microarray data are freely available from GEO database under the accession number GSE30111. By using this set of microarray hybridizations as a reference, RNA corresponding to infected cotyledons replicate 3 at 1 dpi (A1) and replicate 1 at 3 dpi (A2) (GEO accession numbers GSM745566 and GSM745567) were used to perform cDNA synthesis by the alternative method (samples B1 and B2, respectively), based on the SMART approach (BioTechniques (2001) 30:892-897), and microarray data were compared.

Boron Hydrogen Compounds: Hydrogen Storage and Battery Applications.

Project description:About 25 years ago, Bogdanovic and Schwickardi (B. Bogdanovic, M. Schwickardi: J. Alloys Compd. 1-9, 253 (1997) discovered the catalyzed release of hydrogen from NaAlH4. This discovery stimulated a vast research effort on light hydrides as hydrogen storage materials, in particular boron hydrogen compounds. Mg(BH4)2, with a hydrogen content of 14.9 wt %, has been extensively studied, and recent results shed new light on intermediate species formed during dehydrogenation. The chemistry of B3H8-, which is an important intermediate between BH4- and B12H122-, is presented in detail. The discovery of high ionic conductivity in the high-temperature phases of LiBH4 and Na2B12H12 opened a new research direction. The high chemical and electrochemical stability of closo-hydroborates has stimulated new research for their applications in batteries. Very recently, an all-solid-state 4 V Na battery prototype using a Na4(CB11H12)2(B12H12) solid electrolyte has been demonstrated. In this review, we present the current knowledge of possible reaction pathways involved in the successive hydrogen release reactions from BH4- to B12H122-, and a discussion of relevant necessary properties for high-ionic-conduction materials.

Magnesium borohydride: from hydrogen storage to magnesium battery.

Project description:Beyond hydrogen storage: The first example of reversible magnesium deposition/stripping onto/from an inorganic salt was seen for a magnesium borohydride electrolyte. High coulombic efficiency of up to 94 % was achieved in dimethoxyethane solvent. This Mg(BH(4))(2) electrolyte was utilized in a rechargeable magnesium battery.

Is AF Ablation Cost Effective?

Project description:The use of catheter ablation to treat AF is increasing rapidly, but there is presently an incomplete understanding of its cost-effectiveness. AF ablation procedures involve significant up-front expenditures, but multiple randomized trials have demonstrated that ablation is more effective than antiarrhythmic drugs at maintaining sinus rhythm in a second-line and possibly first-line rhythm control setting. Although truly long-term data are limited, ablation, as compared with antiarrrhythmic drugs, also appears associated with improved symptoms and quality of life and a reduction in downstream hospitalization and other health care resource utilization. Several groups have developed cost effectiveness models comparing AF ablation primarily to antiarrhythmic drugs and the model results suggest that ablation likely falls within the range generally accepted as cost-effective in developed nations. This paper will review available information on the cost-effectiveness of catheter ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation, and discuss continued areas of uncertainty where further research is required.
