In the last common enzymatic step of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, prior to the branching point leading to the biosynthesis of heme and chlorophyll, protoporphyrinogen IX (Protogen) is oxidised to protoporphyrin IX (Proto) by protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPX).
