An Ir(III) Complex Photosensitizer With Strong Visible Light Absorption for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction.

ABSTRACT: A cyclometalated iridium(III) complex having 2-(pyren-1-yl)-4-methylquinoline ligands [Ir(pyr)] has a strong absorption band in the visible region (?444nm = 67,000 M-1 cm-1) but does not act as a photosensitizer for photochemical reduction reactions in the presence of triethylamine as an electron donor. Here, 1,3-dimethyl-2-(o-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BI(OH)H) was used instead of the amine, demonstrating that BI(OH)H efficiently quenched the excited state of Ir(pyr) and can undergo the photochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction catalyzed by trans(Cl)-Ru(dmb)(CO)2Cl2 (dmb = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine, Ru) to produce formate as the main product. We also synthesized a binuclear complex combining Ir(pyr) and Ru via an ethylene bridge and investigated its photochemical CO2 reduction activity in the presence of BI(OH)H.

Development of Visible-Light Driven Cu(I) Complex Photosensitizers for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction.

Project description:The visible-light responsive Cu(I)-complex photosensitizers were developed by introducing various aromatic substituents at the 4,7-positions of a 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmp) ligand in a heteroleptic CuI(dmp)(DPEphos)+-type complexes (DPEphos = [2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether) for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Introducing biphenyl groups (Bp-) on the dmp ligand enhanced the molar extinction coefficient (ε) of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band in the visible region (ε = 7,500 M-1cm-1) compared to that of the phenyl (Ph-)-containing analog (ε = 5,700 M-1cm-1 at λmax = 388 nm). However, introducing 4-R-Ph- groups (R = the electron-withdrawing groups NC-, or NO2-) led to a red shift in the band to λmax = 390, 400, and 401 nm, respectively. Single-crystal X-ray analysis showed the Ph- groups were twisted because of the steric repulsion between the 2,6-protons of the Ph- groups and 5,6-protons of the dmp ligand. The result strongly indicated that the π-conjugation effect of the 4-R-Ph- groups is so weak that the lowering of the energy of the dmp π* orbitals is small. However, when 4-R-ph- was substituted by a 5-membered heterorings, there was a larger red shift, leading to an increase in the ε value of the MLCT absorption band. Thus, the substitution to 2-benzofuranyl- groups resulted in visible-light absorption up to 500 nm and a shoulder peak at around 420 nm (ε = 12,300 M-1cm-1) due to the expansion of π-conjugation over the substituted dmp ligand. The photocatalytic reaction for CO2 reduction was tested using the obtained CuI complexes as photosensitizers in the presence of a Fe(dmp)2(NCS)2 catalyst and 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole as a sacrificial reductant, which showed improved CO generation.

A broadband and strong visible-light-absorbing photosensitizer boosts hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Developing broadband and strong visible-light-absorbing photosensitizer is highly desired for dramatically improving the utilization of solar energy and boosting artificial photosynthesis. Herein, we develop a facile strategy to co-sensitize Ir-complex with Coumarins and boron dipyrromethene to explore photosensitizer with a broadband covering ca. 50% visible light region (Ir-4). This type of photosensitizer is firstly introduced into water splitting system, exhibiting significantly enhanced performance with over 21 times higher than that of typical Ir(ppy)2(bpy)+, and the turnover number towards Ir-4 reaches to 115840, representing the most active sensitizer among reported molecular photocatalytic systems. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the Ir-mediation not only achieves a long-lived boron dipyrromethene-localized triplet state, but also makes an efficient excitation energy transfer from Coumarin to boron dipyrromethene to trigger the electron transfer. These findings provide an insight for developing broadband and strong visible-light-absorbing multicomponent arrays on molecular level for efficient artificial photosynthesis.

Visible light photocatalytic reduction of aldehydes by Rh(iii)-H: a detailed mechanistic study.

Project description:The chemoselective photoreduction of aldehydes in the presence of ketones was achieved using triethanolamine (TEOA) as sacrificial electron donor, proflavine (PF) as photocatalyst and [Cp*Rh(iii)(bpy)Cl]Cl (Rhcat) as mediator. The reducing agent, which reacts with the carbonyl group was found to be [Cp*Rh(iii)(bpy)H]Cl (Rh(iii)-H). Contrary to formate-based reduction, its slow photochemical in situ generation enables to kinetically distinguish aldehydes from ketones. The inherent reactivity difference of the carbonyl compounds is transferred by the method into synthetically useful reaction selectivities. The substrate scope is broad with excellent yields. A detailed study of the reaction mechanism reveals that the photoreduction of the PF triplet and the subsequent reduction of the Rhcat leading to Rh(iii)-H represents the major reaction pathway, which is highly oxygen sensitive. The oxidative quenching of the PF singlet state by Rhcat is a competing mechanism, which prevails in non-degassed systems.

Quick and facile preparation of visible light-driven TiO2 photocatalyst with high absorption and photocatalytic activity.

Project description:Self-doping TiO2 has recently attracted considerable attention for its high photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation. However, the literature reported synthetic methods until now were very time-consuming. In this study, we establish a quick and facile method for obtaining self-doping TiO2 with the use of directly treated commercial P25 at a desired temperature for only 5 min through spark plasma sintering technology. With the using of this method, the modified P25 samples exhibit significantly high photoelectric and photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the sample prepared at 600 °C exhibits the optimum catalytic activity. The photodegradation and H2 evolution rates of this samples are significantly higher than those of unmodified P25 sample under visible-light irradiation. The physical origin of the visible-light absorption for the modified P25 samples is investigated in detail according to their structural, optical, and electronic properties. This work will provide a quick and facile method for the large-scale synthesis of visible-light driven photocatalyst for practical applications.

Polythiacalixarene-Embedded Gold Nanoparticles for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction.

Project description:Metal nanoparticles are potent reaction catalysts, but they tend to aggregate, thereby limiting their catalytic efficiency. Their coordination with specific functional groups within a porous structure prevents their aggregation and facilitates the mass flow of catalytic starting materials and products. Herein, we use a thiacalix[4]arene-based polymer as a porous support with abundant docking sites for Au nanoparticles. The sulfur atoms bridging the phenolic subunits of thiacalix[4]arene serve as Lewis basic sites that coordinate Au atoms. Therefore, this approach takes advantage of the functional groups inherent in the monomer and avoids laborious postsynthetic modifications of the polymer. The presented system was tested for visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction, where it showed adequate ability to generate 6.74 μmol g-1 CO over the course of 4 h, while producing small amounts of the CH4 product. This study aims to stimulate interest in the design and development of synthetically simpler porous polymer supports for various metal nanoparticles in catalytic and other applications.

Selective visible-light-driven CO2 reduction on a p-type dye-sensitized NiO photocathode.

Project description:We present a photocathode assembly for the visible-light-driven selective reduction of CO2 to CO at potentials below the thermodynamic equilibrium in the dark. The photoelectrode comprises a porous p-type semiconducting NiO electrode modified with the visible-light-responsive organic dye P1 and the reversible CO2 cycling enzyme carbon monoxide dehydrogenase. The direct electrochemistry of the enzymatic electrocatalyst on NiO shows that in the dark the electrocatalytic behavior is rectified toward CO oxidation, with the reactivity being governed by the carrier availability at the semiconductor-catalyst interface.

Spherical Bi2WO6/Bi2S3/MoS2 n-p Heterojunction with Excellent Visible-Light Photocatalytic Reduction Cr(VI) Activity.

Project description:Exploiting excellent photocatalytic activity and stable heterostructure composites are of critical importance for environmental sustainability. The spherical Bi2WO6/Bi2S3/MoS2 n-p heterojunction is first prepared via an in situ hydrothermal method using Bi2WO6, Na2MoO4·2H2O, and CH4N2S, in which the intermediate phase Bi2S3 is formed due to chemical coupling interaction of Bi2WO6 and CH4N2S. Scanning electron microscopy indicates that the compactness of the sample can be easily adjusted by changing the contents of S and Mo sources in the solution. The results of ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectra, photoluminescence, transient photocurrent response, and electrochemical impedance spectra indicate that the formation of heterojunctions contributes to enhancing visible-light utilization and promoting photogenerated carrier separation and transfer. The composite material is used as a catalyst for the visible light photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). Remarkably, the optimal Bi2WO6/Bi2S3/MoS2 n-p heterojunction achieves the greatest Cr(VI) reduction rate of 100% within 75 min (λ > 420 nm, pH = 2); this rate is considerably better than the Cr(VI) reduction rate of pure Bi2WO6. The recycling experiment also reveals that the photocatalytic performance of the n-p heterojunction toward Cr(VI) is still maintained at 80% after three cycles, indicating that the n-p heterojunction has excellent structural stability. The capture experiment proves that the main active species in the system are electrons. The reasonable mechanism of Bi2WO6/Bi2S3/MoS2 photocatalytic reduction Cr(VI) is proposed. Our work provides new research ideas for the design of ternary heterojunction composites and new strategies for the development of photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.

Copolymer of Phenylene and Thiophene toward a Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Oxygen Reduction to Hydrogen Peroxide.

Project description:π-Conjugated polymers including polythiophenes are emerging as promising electrode materials for (photo)electrochemical reactions, such as water reduction to H2 production and oxygen (O2) reduction to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. In the current work, a copolymer of phenylene and thiophene is designed, where the phenylene ring lowers the highest occupied molecular orbital level of the polymer of visible-light-harvesting thiophene entities and works as a robust catalytic site for the O2 reduction to H2O2 production. The very high onset potential of the copolymer for O2 reduction (+1.53 V vs RHE, pH 12) allows a H2O2 production setup with a traditional water-oxidation catalyst, manganese oxide (MnO x ), as the anode. MnO x is deposited on one face of a conducting plate, and visible-light illumination of the copolymer layer formed on the other face aids steady O2 reduction to H2O2 with no bias assistance and a complete photocatalytic conversion rate of 14 000 mg (H2O2) gphotocat -1 h-1 or ≈0.2 mg (H2O2) cm-2 h-1.
