Laboratory measurements of viscosity, density, and bulk contact angle on marble and soda lime glass for three naphthenic acid + n-decane solutions.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents static oil/brine contact angles measured using the sessile drop method on soda lime glass and polished marble. Pure n-decane and three 66 mM naphthenic acid solutions in n-decane were considered as model oils. Selected naphthenic acids were: cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CHCA), cyclohexanebutyric acid (CHBA), and cyclohexanepentanoic acid (CHPA); all oils were dyed with Oil Red O (ORO) at a concentration of 0.9 mM. Also presented are complementary density and viscosity measurements by rotational viscometry at selected temperatures ranging from T = 16.00-28.00 °C. Zinc Oxide-Doped Antibacterial Soda Lime Glass Produced as a Glass Container.

Project description:The aim of this study is to produce and characterize glass materials, which have an enhanced antibacterial property by the conventional melting method. Container glass compositions including different amounts of zinc oxide (ZnO) (5.0, 7.5, and 10.0%) were prepared and melted to be able to obtain the antibacterial glass. The Release and antibacterial tests, which were performed after the melting process, showed that the glass doped with 5% ZnO was the most appropriate composition according to test results (99.82% Escherichia coli inactivation) and its raw materials' costs. Physical, thermal, and mechanical properties such as thermal expansion coefficient (86.1 × 10-7/°C), density (2.523 g/cm3), refractive index (1.5191), hardness (596 kg/mm2), and elastic modulus (5.84 GPa) of the glass doped with 5% ZnO were determined, and the results showed that the obtained antibacterial glass sample is suitable to be used as a glass container. HighTemperature Melting Observation System studies were performed on the produced antibacterial glass composition, and it was found that the antibacterial glass can be produced in soda lime glass furnaces without changing any furnace design and production parameters. This antibacterial glass can be a remarkable product for the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Production of Soda Lime Glass Having Antibacterial Property for Industrial Applications.

Project description:This study was aimed to produce and characterize the first commercial glass materials with enhanced antibacterial property using conventional melting method. For this purpose, typical container glass composition that contains some specific metal ions, such as silver, strontium, and copper, was used to obtain antibacterial glass samples using classical melting method. After the melting process, antibacterial tests and migration tests were applied to the glasses, and it was found that the glass doped with 2% Ag2O was the best composition. X-rays diffractometer (XRD), thermal expansion coefficient, density, refractive index, hardness, and elastic module results showed that the glass doped with 2% Ag2O was a suitable material as a container glass. High Temperature Melting Observation System studies were performed on the produced antibacterial glass composition, and it was found that the antibacterial glass can be produced in soda lime glass furnaces without changing any furnace design and production parameters. As a result of the characterization studies, it was concluded that the produced container glass doped with silver can be a good candidate for food and pharmaceutical products where bacterial growth is absolutely undesirable.

Surface relief hologram formed by selective SiO2 deposition on soda-lime silicate glass.

Project description:We propose the fabrication of surface relief holograms via selective SiO2 deposition on soda-lime silicate glass substrates. Initially, the original hologram was recorded on an azobenzene photosensitive polymer film coated on the soda-lime silicate glass by irradiation with a conventional continuous wave Ar+ laser with a wavelength of 514.5 nm. The hologram was transferred to the soda-lime silicate glass surface via a corona discharge treatment as an index modulation hologram, which was created by partial substitution of protons for sodium ions during the corona discharge treatment in air. After the corona discharge treatment, the polymer film was removed from the substrate. The diffraction efficiency of the index hologram on the soda-lime silicate glass was estimated to be 5.8 × 10-2% at a wavelength of 532 nm. Finally, the glass substrate was subjected to corona discharge treatment in air with vaporized cyclic siloxane. A surface relief hologram with the diffraction efficiency of 2.3% was successfully fabricated on the soda-lime silicate glass.

Selective Deposition of SiO2 on Ion Conductive Area of Soda-lime Glass Surface.

Project description:Selective deposition of SiO2 nanoparticles was demonstrated on a soda-lime glass surface with a periodic sodium deficient pattern formed using the electrical nanoimprint. Positively charged SiO2 particles generated using corona discharge in a cyclic siloxane vapor, were selectively deposited depending on the sodium pattern. For such phenomena to occur, the sodium ion migration to the cathode side was indispensable to the electrical charge compensation on the glass surface. Therefore, the deposition proceeded preferentially outside the alkali-deficient area. Periodic SiO2 structures with 424 nm and 180 nm heights were obtained using one-dimensional (6 μm period) and two-dimensional (500 nm period) imprinted patterns.

Histological response of soda-lime glass-ceramic bactericidal rods implanted in the jaws of beagle dogs.

Project description:Bacterial and fungal infections remain a major clinical challenge. Implant infections very often require complicated revision procedures that are troublesome to patients and costly to the healthcare system. Innovative approaches to tackle infections are urgently needed. We investigated the histological response of novel free P2O5 glass-ceramic rods implanted in the jaws of beagle dogs. Due to the particular percolated morphology of this glass-ceramic, the dissolution of the rods in the animal body environment and the immature bone formation during the fourth months of implantation maintained the integrity of the glass-ceramic rod. No clinical signs of inflammation took place in any of the beagle dogs during the four months of implantation. This new glass-ceramic biomaterial with inherent bactericidal and fungicidal properties can be considered as an appealing candidate for bone tissue engineering.

Spontaneous and strong multi-layer graphene n-doping on soda-lime glass and its application in graphene-semiconductor junctions.

Project description:Scalable and low-cost doping of graphene could improve technologies in a wide range of fields such as microelectronics, optoelectronics, and energy storage. While achieving strong p-doping is relatively straightforward, non-electrostatic approaches to n-dope graphene, such as chemical doping, have yielded electron densities of 9.5 × 10(12) e/cm(2) or below. Furthermore, chemical doping is susceptible to degradation and can adversely affect intrinsic graphene's properties. Here we demonstrate strong (1.33 × 10(13) e/cm(2)), robust, and spontaneous graphene n-doping on a soda-lime-glass substrate via surface-transfer doping from Na without any external chemical, high-temperature, or vacuum processes. Remarkably, the n-doping reaches 2.11 × 10(13) e/cm(2) when graphene is transferred onto a p-type copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) semiconductor that itself has been deposited onto soda-lime-glass, via surface-transfer doping from Na atoms that diffuse to the CIGS surface. Using this effect, we demonstrate an n-graphene/p-semiconductor Schottky junction with ideality factor of 1.21 and strong photo-response. The ability to achieve strong and persistent graphene n-doping on low-cost, industry-standard materials paves the way toward an entirely new class of graphene-based devices such as photodetectors, photovoltaics, sensors, batteries, and supercapacitors.

Nonlinear scaling of surface water diffusion with bulk water viscosity of crowded solutions.

Project description:The translational hydration dynamics within 0.5-1.5 nm of the surface of a DPPC liposome, a model biomacromolecular surface, is analyzed by the recently developed Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (ODNP) technique. We find that dramatic changes to the bulk solvent cause only weak changes in the surface hydration dynamics. Specifically, both a >10-fold increase in bulk viscosity and the restriction of diffusion by confinement on a multiple nm length-scale change the local translational diffusion coefficient of the surface water surrounding the lipid bilayer by <2.5-fold. By contrast, previous ODNP studies have shown that changes to the biomacromolecular surface induced by folding, binding, or aggregation can cause local hydration dynamics to vary by factors of up to 30. We suggest that the surface topology and chemistry at the ≤1.5 nm scale, rather than the characteristics of the solvent, nearly exclusively determine the macromolecule's surface hydration dynamics.

Diffusion and Viscosity in Mixed Protein Solutions.

Project description:The viscosity and diffusion properties of crowded protein systems were investigated with molecular dynamics simulations of SH3 mixtures with different crowders, and results were compared with experimental data. The simulations accurately reproduced experimental trends across a wide range of protein concentrations, including highly crowded environments up to 300 g/L. Notably, viscosity increased with crowding but varied little between different crowder types, while diffusion rates were significantly reduced depending on protein-protein interaction strength. Analysis using the Stokes-Einstein relation indicated that the reduction in diffusion exceeded what was expected from viscosity changes alone, with the additional slow-down attributable to transient cluster formation driven by weakly attractive interactions. Contact kinetics analysis further revealed that longer-lived interactions contributed more significantly to reduced diffusion rates than short-lived interactions. This study also highlights the accuracy of current computational methodologies for capturing the dynamics of proteins in highly concentrated solutions and provides insights into the molecular mechanisms affecting protein mobility in crowded environments.
