Project description:A facile colloidal synthesis of highly ionic cesium halide nanocrystals is reported. Colloidal nanocrystals of CsI, CsCl and CsBr with unprecedentedly small dimensions are obtained using oleylammonium halides and cesium oleate as precursors. The ease and adaptability of our method enables its universalization for the formation of other highly ionic nanocrystals.

Project description:We have developed a colloidal synthesis of nearly monodisperse nanocrystals of pure Cs4PbX6 (X = Cl, Br, I) and their mixed halide compositions with sizes ranging from 9 to 37 nm. The optical absorption spectra of these nanocrystals display a sharp, high energy peak due to transitions between states localized in individual PbX64- octahedra. These spectral features are insensitive to the size of the particles and in agreement with the features of the corresponding bulk materials. Samples with mixed halide composition exhibit absorption bands that are intermediate in spectral position between those of the pure halide compounds. Furthermore, the absorption bands of intermediate compositions broaden due to the different possible combinations of halide coordination around the Pb2+ ions. Both observations are supportive of the fact that the [PbX6]4- octahedra are electronically decoupled in these systems. Because of the large band gap of Cs4PbX6 (>3.2 eV), no excitonic emission in the visible range was observed. The Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals can be converted into green fluorescent CsPbBr3 nanocrystals by their reaction with an excess of PbBr2 with preservation of size and size distributions. The insertion of PbX2 into Cs4PbX6 provides a means of accessing CsPbX3 nanocrystals in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and compositions, an important aspect for the development of precisely tuned perovskite nanocrystal inks.

Project description:We report a correlation between the structural phase transition of CsPbX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs) and their temperature dependent steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL (TRPL). In constrast to CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 NCs which exhibited a continuous blue shift in their bandgap with increasing temperature, the CsPbCl3 exhibited a blue shift until ~193 K, followed by a red shift until room temperature. We attribute this change from a blue to a red shift to a structural phase transtion in CsPbCl3, which also manifested in the temperature dependent TRPL. Notably, the exciton recombination lifetimes showed a similar reverse trend due to the phase transition in CsPbCl3, which has not been reported previously.

Project description:Colloidal CsPbX3 (X = Br, Cl, and I) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as promising phosphors and solar cell materials due to their remarkable optoelectronic properties. These properties can be tailored by not only controlling the size and shape of the NCs but also postsynthetic composition tuning through topotactic anion exchange. In contrast, property control by cation exchange is still underdeveloped for colloidal CsPbX3 NCs. Here, we present a method that allows partial cation exchange in colloidal CsPbBr3 NCs, whereby Pb2+ is exchanged for several isovalent cations, resulting in doped CsPb1-xMxBr3 NCs (M= Sn2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+; 0 < x ≤ 0.1), with preservation of the original NC shape. The size of the parent NCs is also preserved in the product NCs, apart from a small (few %) contraction of the unit cells upon incorporation of the guest cations. The partial Pb2+ for M2+ exchange leads to a blue-shift of the optical spectra, while maintaining the high photoluminescence quantum yields (>50%), sharp absorption features, and narrow emission of the parent CsPbBr3 NCs. The blue-shift in the optical spectra is attributed to the lattice contraction that accompanies the Pb2+ for M2+ cation exchange and is observed to scale linearly with the lattice contraction. This work opens up new possibilities to engineer the properties of halide perovskite NCs, which to date are demonstrated to be the only known system where cation and anion exchange reactions can be sequentially combined while preserving the original NC shape, resulting in compositionally diverse perovskite NCs.

Project description:CsPbX3 NCs with both high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and enhanced stability have been obtained by using high binding ability ligands. As a result, the CsPbI3 NCs prepared using palmitic acid and oleylamine as ligands have high PLQY (up to 92%), and the PLQYs of CsPbX3 perovskite NCs can be sustained for one month with a slight decrease. Impressively, the presence of palmitic acid and stearic acid can dramatically improve the chemical stability of CsPbX3 NCs. Importantly, 1H NMR measurements indicate that much more palmitic acid remained on the surface of CsPbX3 NCs than oleic acid after purification using solvent, suggesting the higher binding ability of palmitic acid than oleic acid. Finally, the fabricated perovskite NCs were used as luminescent inks and phosphors of white light emitting diodes.

Project description:Attaining thermodynamic stability of colloids in a broad range of concentrations has long been a major thrust in the field of colloidal ligand-capped semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs). This challenge is particularly pressing for the novel NCs of cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3; X = Cl, Br) owing to their highly dynamic and labile surfaces. Herein, we demonstrate that soy lecithin, a mass-produced natural phospholipid, serves as a tightly binding surface-capping ligand suited for a high-reaction yield synthesis of CsPbX3 NCs (6-10 nm) and allowing for long-term retention of the colloidal and structural integrity of CsPbX3 NCs in a broad range of concentrations-from a few ng/mL to >400 mg/mL (inorganic core mass). The high colloidal stability achieved with this long-chain zwitterionic ligand can be rationalized with the Alexander-De Gennes model that considers the increased particle-particle repulsion due to branched chains and ligand polydispersity. The versatility and immense practical utility of such colloids is showcased by the single NC spectroscopy on ultradilute samples and, conversely, by obtaining micrometer-thick, optically homogeneous dense NC films in a single spin-coating step from ultraconcentrated colloids.

Project description:Lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) have gathered much attention as light-emitting materials, particularly owing to their excellent color purity, band gap tunability, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), low cost, and scalable synthesis. To enhance the stability of LHP NCs, bulky strongly bound organic ligands are commonly employed, which counteract the extraction of charge carriers from the NCs and hinder their use as photoconductive materials and photocatalysts. Replacing these ligands with a thin coating is a complex challenge due to the highly dynamic ionic lattice, which is vulnerable to the commonly employed coating precursors and solvents. In this work, we demonstrate thin (<1 nm) metal oxide gel coatings through non-hydrolytic sol-gel reactions. The coated NCs are readily dispersible and highly stable in short-chain alcohols while remaining monodisperse and exhibiting high PLQY (70-90%). We show the successful coating of NCs in a wide range of sizes (5-14 nm) and halide compositions. Alumina-gel-coated NCs were chosen for an in-depth analysis, and the versatility of the approach is demonstrated by employing zirconia- and titania-based coatings. Compact films of the alumina-gel-coated NCs exhibit electronic and excitonic coupling between the NCs, leading to two orders of magnitude longer photoluminescence lifetimes (400-700 ns) compared to NCs in solution or their organically capped counterparts. This makes these NCs highly suited for applications where charge carrier delocalization or extraction is essential for performance.

Project description:Stoichiometric Cu2Se nanocrystals were synthesized in either cubic or hexagonal (metastable) crystal structures and used as the host material in cation exchange reactions with Pb2+ ions. Even if the final product of the exchange, in both cases, was rock-salt PbSe nanocrystals, we show here that the crystal structure of the starting nanocrystals has a strong influence on the exchange pathway. The exposure of cubic Cu2Se nanocrystals to Pb2+ cations led to the initial formation of PbSe unselectively on the overall surface of the host nanocrystals, generating Cu2Se@PbSe core@shell nanoheterostructures. The formation of such intermediates was attributed to the low diffusivity of Pb2+ ions inside the host lattice and to the absence of preferred entry points in cubic Cu2Se. On the other hand, in hexagonal Cu2Se nanocrystals, the entrance of Pb2+ ions generated PbSe stripes "sandwiched" in between hexagonal Cu2Se domains. These peculiar heterostructures formed as a consequence of the preferential diffusion of Pb2+ ions through specific (a, b) planes of the hexagonal Cu2Se structure, which are characterized by almost empty octahedral sites. Our findings suggest that the morphology of the nanoheterostructures, formed upon partial cation exchange reactions, is intimately connected not only to the NC host material, but also to its crystal structure.

Project description:We utilized a first-principle density functional theory for a comprehensive analysis of CsPbX3 (X = F, Cl, Br, I) to explore its physical and chemical properties, including its mechanical behavior, electronic structure and optical properties. Calculations show that all four materials have good stability, modulus of elasticity, hardness and wear resistance. Additionally, CsPbX3 demonstrates a vertical electron leap and serves as a semiconductor material with direct band gaps of 3.600 eV, 3.111 eV, 2.538 eV and 2.085 eV. In examining its optical properties, we observed that the real and imaginary components of the dielectric function exhibit peaks within the low-energy range. Furthermore, the dielectric function gradually decreases as the photon energy increases. The absorption spectrum reveals that the CsPbX3 material exhibits the highest UV light absorption, and as X changes (with the increase in atomic radius within the halogen group of elements), the light absorption undergoes a red shift, becoming stronger and enhancing light utilization. These properties underscore the material's potential for application in microelectronic and optoelectronic device production. Moreover, they provide a theoretical reference for future investigations into CsPbX3 materials.

Project description:Colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have recently emerged as versatile photonic sources. Their processing and optoelectronic applications are hampered by the loss of colloidal stability and structural integrity due to the facile desorption of surface capping molecules during isolation and purification. To address this issue, herein, we propose a new ligand capping strategy utilizing common and inexpensive long-chain zwitterionic molecules such as 3-(N,N-dimethyloctadecylammonio)propanesulfonate, resulting in much improved chemical durability. In particular, this class of ligands allows for the isolation of clean NCs with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QYs) of above 90% after four rounds of precipitation/redispersion along with much higher overall reaction yields of uniform and colloidal dispersible NCs. Densely packed films of these NCs exhibit high PL QY values and effective charge transport. Consequently, they exhibit photoconductivity and low thresholds for amplified spontaneous emission of 2 μJ cm-2 under femtosecond optical excitation and are suited for efficient light-emitting diodes.
