A new genus and a new species in the subfamily Polyzosteriinae (Blattodea, Blattidae) from China.

ABSTRACT: Laevifaciesquadrialata gen. et sp. nov. is described from Hainan Province, China based on morphological data. COI data (DNA barcodes) is utilized to confirm the sexual dimorphism occurring in Laevifaciesquadrialata gen. et sp. nov. Melanozosterianitida Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1865, is reported from Guangxi Province, China. A key to the Chinese Polyzosteriinae is provided.

Protagonista lugubris, a cockroach species new to China and its contribution to the revision of genus Protagonista, with notes on the taxonomy of Archiblattinae (Blattodea, Blattidae).

Project description:The blattid genus Protagonista Shelford, 1908, which is tentatively assigned to the subfamily Archiblattinae (= Planeticinae), is reported from China for the first time with illustrations and description of Protagonista lugubris Shelford, 1908. It is a wood-dwelling and potentially a wood-feeding species. The male and female genitalia of Protagonista are described and illustrated for the first time. The species Protagonista pertristis Hanitsch, 1923 is revived from the synonymy of Protagonista lugubris, and the remaining three nominal species that were also considered as synonyms of Protagonista lugubris are now recognized as synonyms of Protagonista pertristis. In agreement with Princis (1965), we propose that Eroblatta Shelford, 1910, a genus closely related to Protagonista, should be placed in the subfamily Archiblattinae rather than Blattinae. However, the taxonomy of Archiblattinae is problematic and awaits revision. Photos and a key to species of Protagonista and Eroblatta are provided, including photos of the holotypes of the synonymized nominal species. In addition, although Planeticinae is the senior synonym of Archiblattinae, the priority of the latter should be maintained since it is in prevailing usage based on the Article 40.2 in ICZN 4(th) edition.

Revision of the genus Salganea Stal (Blattodea, Blaberidae, Panesthiinae) from China, with descriptions of three new species.

Project description:Three new species of Salganea Stål, 1877 are described and illustrated: S. quinquedentata sp. n., S. anisodonta sp. n. and S. flexibilis sp. n. S. taiwanensis Roth, 1979, S. guangxiensis (Feng & Woo, 1990), S. incerta (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893) and S. raggei Roth, 1979 are redescribed. Panesthia concinna Feng & Woo, 1990 is synonymized with S. taiwanensis Roth, 1979 and Panesthia guangxiensis Feng & Woo, 1990 is transferred to the genus Salganea for the first time. As well, a key to species from China is presented.

Cephalic ganglia transcriptomics of the American cockroach Periplaneta americana (Blattodea: Blattidae).

Project description:The American cockroach Periplaneta americana (L.) (Blattodea, Blattidae) has been a model organism for biochemical and physiological study for almost a century, however, its use does not benefit from the genetic tools found in key model species such as Drosophila melanogaster. To facilitate the use of the cockroach as a model system in neuroscience and to serve as a foundation for functional and translational experimentation, a transcriptome of the cephalic ganglia was assembled and annotated, and differential expression profiles between these ganglia were assessed. The transcriptome assembly yielded >400 k transcripts, with >40 k putative coding sequences. Gene ontology and protein domain searches indicate the cerebral and gnathal ganglia (GNG) have distinct genetic expression profiles. The developmental Toll signaling pathway appears to be active in the adult central nervous system (CNS), which may suggest a separate role for this pathway besides innate immune activation or embryonic development. The catabolic glycolytic and citric acid cycle enzymes are well represented in both ganglia, but key enzymes are more highly expressed in the GNG. Both ganglia express gluconeogenic and trehaloneogenic enzymes, suggesting a larger role of the CNS in regulating hemolymph sugar homeostasis than previously appreciated. The annotation and quantification of the cephalic ganglia transcriptome reveal both canonical and novel pathways in signaling and metabolism in an adult insect and lay a foundation for future functional and genetic analysis.

Schievitermesglobicornis, a new genus and species of Termitinae (Blattodea, Termitidae) from French Guiana.

Project description:Asymmetrical snapping mandibles have evolved several times in termites. In the Neotropics, asymmetrical snapping mandibles are found in soldiers of four genera: Neocapritermes, Planicapritermes, Cornicapritermes and Dihoplotermes. Here, I describe Schievitermesglobicornis, new genus and species, from French Guiana. This genus is characterized by an absence of a frontal prominence and slightly asymmetrical mandibles in the soldier caste. The morphology and anatomy of the worker reveal a wood-based diet, and suggest that Schievitermes, Planicapritermes and Neocapritermes constitute a monophyletic group, which is consistent with mtDNA data.

Establishment of six new Rhabdoblatta species (Blattodea, Blaberidae, Epilamprinae) from China.

Project description:This study examined 504 Rhabdoblatta specimens sampled from China, of which, 86 Rhabdoblatta specimens were used for COI sequencing. A phylogenetic analysis using the ML method and MOTUs estimations by ABGD and GMYC based on COI sequences was performed. Eighteen Rhabdoblatta species were identified when these data were combined with morphological data. Six new species were established among these samples, i.e., Rh.similsinuata sp. n., Rh.densimaculata sp. n., Rh.gyroflexa sp. n., Rh.chaulformis sp. n., Rh.maculata sp. n., and Rh.ecarinata sp. n. For the first time, females including female genitalia of 14 known Rhabdoblatta species are described worldwide. Our study shows that combining molecular species delimitation methods with morphological data helps to delimit species and understand cockroach biodiversity.

Species delimitation of Margattea cockroaches from China, with seven new species (Blattodea, Ectobiidae, Pseudophyllodromiinae).

Project description:Nearly 450 Margattea specimens were collected from 27 locations in China and their morphology was examined. Then 68 Margattea COI sequences were obtained and used to carry out phylogenetic analyses as well as species delimitation analyses using General Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC), Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD), and Poisson Tree Processes (bPTP). GMYC analysis resulted in 21 molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) (confidence interval: 20-22), which was completely consistent with the result of the bPTP. There were 15 MOTUs using the ABGD method. The number of MOTUs was slightly different from the assigned morphospecies (16). As to the incongruence between molecular and morphological results, we checked the specimens again and made sure that most morphological differences were determined to be intraspecific differences (except the difference between M. angusta and M. mckittrickae), although a large genetic distance existed. Finally, 16 Margattea species from China were defined in this study, of which, seven new species are established, i.e. Margattea deltodonta J-J He & Z-Q Wang, sp. nov., Margattea cuspidata J-J He & Z-Q Wang, sp. nov., Margattea caudata J-J He & Z-Q Wang, sp. nov., Margattea paratransversa J-J He & Z-Q Wang, sp. nov., Margattea disparilis J-J He & Z-Q Wang, sp. nov., Margattea transversa J-J He & Z-Q Wang, sp. nov., and Margattea bicruris J-J He & Z-Q Wang, sp. nov.

In addition, a key to all species of the genus Panesthia from China is presented.
