Degradable Polymer Stars Based on Tannic Acid Cores by ATRP.

ABSTRACT: Degradable polymers are crucial in order to reduce plastic environmental pollution and waste accumulation. In this paper, a natural product, tannic acid was modified to be used as a polymer star core. The tannic acid was modified with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators and characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, and XPS. Twenty-five arm polymer stars were prepared by photoinduced ATRP of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly(oligo(ethylene oxide) methacrylate) (molar mass Mw = 300 g/mol) (P(OEO300MA)). The polymer stars were degraded by cleaving the polymer star arms attached to the core by phenolic esters under mild basic conditions. The stars were analyzed before and after degradation by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Cytotoxicity assays were performed on the P(OEO300MA) stars and corresponding degraded polymers, and were found to be nontoxic at the concentrations tested.

Electrospun Polymer Nanofibers Reinforced by Tannic Acid/Fe+++ Complexes.

Project description:We report the successful preparation of reinforced electrospun nanofibers and fibrous mats of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) via a simple and inexpensive method using stable tannic acid (TA) and ferric ion (Fe+++) assemblies formed by solution mixing and pH adjustment. Changes in solution pH change the number of TA galloyl groups attached to the Fe+++ from one (pH < 2) to two (3 < pH < 6) to three (pH < 7.4) and affect the interactions between PVA and TA. At pH ~ 5.5, the morphology and fiber diameter size (FDS) examined by SEM are determinant for the mechanical properties of the fibrous mats and depend on the PVA content. At an optimal 8 wt % concentration, PVA becomes fully entangled and forms uniform nanofibers with smaller FDS (p < 0.05) and improved mechanical properties when compared to mats of PVA alone and of PVA with TA (p < 0.05). Changes in solution pH lead to beads formation, more irregular FDS and poorer mechanical properties (p < 0.05). The Fe+++ inclusion does not alter the oxidation activity of TA (p > 0.05) suggesting the potential of TA-Fe+++ assemblies to reinforce polymer nanofibers with high functionality for use in diverse applications including food, biomedical and pharmaceutical.

Direct ATRP of Methacrylic Acid with Iron-Porphyrin Based Catalysts.

Project description:An iron porphyrin catalyst, derived from the active center of proteins such as horseradish peroxidase and hemoglobin, was successfully used for the atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRP) of methacrylic acid. ATRP of methacrylic acid and other acidic monomers is challenging due to Cu complexation by carboxylates, protonation of the ligand, and displacement of the halogen chain end. A robust mesohemin-based catalyst provided controlled ATRP of methacrylic acid, yielding poly(methacrylic acid) with Mn ≥ 20000 and dispersity Đ < 1.5. Retention of halogen chain end was confirmed by successful chain extension of a poly-(methacrylic acid)-Br macroinitiator.

High performance shape memory polymer networks based on rigid nanoparticle cores.

Project description:Smart materials that can respond to external stimuli are of widespread interest in biomedical science. Thermal-responsive shape memory polymers, a class of intelligent materials that can be fixed at a temporary shape below their transition temperature (T(trans)) and thermally triggered to resume their original shapes on demand, hold great potential as minimally invasive self-fitting tissue scaffolds or implants. The intrinsic mechanism for shape memory behavior of polymers is the freezing and activation of the long-range motion of polymer chain segments below and above T(trans), respectively. Both T(trans) and the extent of polymer chain participation in effective elastic deformation and recovery are determined by the network composition and structure, which are also defining factors for their mechanical properties, degradability, and bioactivities. Such complexity has made it extremely challenging to achieve the ideal combination of a T(trans) slightly above physiological temperature, rapid and complete recovery, and suitable mechanical and biological properties for clinical applications. Here we report a shape memory polymer network constructed from a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane nanoparticle core functionalized with eight polyester arms. The cross-linked networks comprising this macromer possessed a gigapascal-storage modulus at body temperature and a T(trans) between 42 and 48 degrees C. The materials could stably hold their temporary shapes for > 1 year at room temperature and achieve full shape recovery <or= 51 degrees C in a matter of seconds. Their versatile structures allowed for tunable biodegradability and biofunctionalizability. These materials have tremendous promise for tissue engineering applications.

Uniform segmented platelet micelles with compositionally distinct and selectively degradable cores.

Project description:The creation of nanoparticles with controlled and uniform dimensions and spatially defined functionality is a key challenge. The recently developed living crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) method has emerged as a promising route to one-dimensional (1D) and 2D core-shell micellar assemblies by seeded growth of polymeric and molecular amphiphiles. However, the general limitation of the epitaxial growth process to a single core-forming chemistry is an important obstacle to the creation of complex nanoparticles with segmented cores of spatially varied composition that can be subsequently exploited in selective transformations or responses to external stimuli. Here we report the successful use of a seeded growth approach that operates for a variety of different crystallizable polylactone homopolymer/block copolymer blend combinations to access 2D platelet micelles with compositionally distinct segmented cores. To illustrate the utility of controlling internal core chemistry, we demonstrate spatially selective hydrolytic degradation of the 2D platelets-a result that may be of interest for the design of complex stimuli-responsive particles for programmed-release and cargo-delivery applications.

Silver-Polymer Composite Stars: Synthesis and Applications.

Project description:Colloidal "silver stars" were synthesized upon poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid nanosphere templates via a facile two-step silver reduction method. Myriad dendrimer-like Ag star morphologies were synthesized by varying the amount of poly(vinyl alcohol) and trisodium citrate used during silver reduction. Scanning electron microscopy studies revealed that star-shaped silver-polymer composites possessing nanoscopic, fractal morphologies with diameters ranging from 500 nm to 7 μm were produced. These composites have broad applications from antibacterial agents to catalysis; two such applications were tested here. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) studies showed multiple hot spots of SERS activity within a single star. Electrochemical catalysis experiments demonstrated the feasibility of using the silver stars instead of platinum for the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline fuel cells.

Aqueous-based initiator attachment and ATRP grafting of polymer brushes from poly(methyl methacrylate) substrates.

Project description:Many polymers, such as PMMA, are very susceptible to swelling or dissolution by organic solvents. Growing covalently attached polymer brushes from these surfaces by atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is challenging because of the typical requirement of organic solvent for initiator immobilization. We report an unprecedented, aqueous-based route to graft poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAAm, from poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, surfaces by ATRP, wherein the underlying PMMA is unaffected. Successful attachment of the ATRP initiator, N-hydroxysuccinimidyl-2-bromo-2-methylpropionate, on amine-bearing PMMA surfaces was confirmed by XPS. From this surface-immobilized initiator, thermoresponsive PNIPAAm brushes were grown by aqueous ATRP to yield optically transparent PNIPAAm-grafted PMMA surfaces. This procedure is valuable, as it can be applied for the aqueous-based covalent attachment of ATRP initiator on any amine-functionalized surface, with subsequent polymerization of a variety of monomers.

Polymer-Assisted 3D Printing of Inductor Cores.

Project description:Poly(glycerol monomethacrylate) (PGMA) prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization was investigated as an additive for high-loading iron oxide nanoparticle (IOP) 3D printable inks. The effect of adjusting the molar mass and loading of PGMA on the rheology of IOP suspensions was investigated, and an optimized ink formulation containing 70% w/w IOPs and 0.25% w/w PGMA98 at pH 10 was developed. This ink was successfully 3D printed onto various substrates and into several structures, including rectangles, high aspect ratio cylinders, letters, spiral- and comb-shaped structures, and thin- and thick-walled toroids. The effect of sintering on the mechanical properties of printed artifacts was investigated via four-point flexural and compressive testing, with higher sintering temperatures resulting in improved mechanical properties due to changes in the particle size and microstructure. The printed toroids were fabricated into inductors, and their electrical performance was assessed via impedance spectroscopy at a working frequency range of 0.001-13 MHz. There was a clear trade-off between electrical properties and sintering temperature due to a phase change between γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3 upon heating. Nevertheless, the optimized devices had a Q factor of ∼40 at 10 MHz, representing a superior performance compared to that of other inductors with iron oxide cores previously reported. Thus, this report represents a significant step toward the development of low-cost, fully aqueous, high loading, and 3D printable ceramic inks for high-performance inductors and functional devices.

Renewable Fabric Surface-Initiated ATRP Polymerizations: Towards Mixed Polymer Brushes.

Project description:A totally new approach in the synthesis of mixed polymer brushes tethered on polyamide (PA) surfaces is presented herein. As a proof of concept, two types of homopolymers were synthesized in sequential surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) reactions: poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly((2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) and polystyrene /poly((2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate). The ATRP initiator was immobilized on the surface through PA chain-end groups in two subsequent steps, separated by homo-polymerizations. The amount of the PA chains' end groups available on the modified surface was tuned by the thermal rearrangement of the surface.

Acid-degradable polymer-caged lipoplex (PCL) platform for siRNA delivery: facile cellular triggered release of siRNA.

Project description:An acid-degradable polymer-caged lipoplex (PCL) platform consisting of a cationic lipoplex core and a biocompatible, pH-responsive polymer shell has been developed for the effective delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA) through a combination of facile loading, rapid acid-triggered release, cellular internalization, and effective endosomal escape. In vitro testing of this degradable PCL delivery platform reveals ∼45- and ∼2.5-fold enhancement of enhanced green fluorescent protein knockdown in cancer cells in comparison to either free siRNA or siRNA-loaded non-acid-degradable lipoplex formulations, respectively.

Surface-Induced ARGET ATRP for Silicon Nanoparticles with Fluorescent Polymer Brushes.

Project description:Well-defined polymer brushes attached to nanoparticles offer an elegant opportunity for surface modification because of their excellent mechanical stability, functional versatility, high graft density as well as controllability of surface properties. This study aimed to prepare hybrid materials with good dispersion in different solvents, and to endow this material with certain fluorescence characteristics. Well-defined diblock copolymers poly (styrene)-b-poly (hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate)-co-poly (hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate- rhodamine B) grafted silica nanoparticles (SNPs-g-PS-b-PHEMA-co-PHEMA-RhB) hybrid materials were synthesized via surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP). The SNPs surfaces were modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550) firstly, then the initiators 2-Bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) was attached to SNPs surfaces through the esterification of acyl bromide groups and amidogen groups. The synthetic initiators (SNPs-Br) were further used for the SI-ARGET ATRP of styrene (St), hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate (HEMA) and hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate-rhodamine B (HEMA-RhB). The results indicated that the SI-ARGET ATRP initiator had been immobilized onto SNPs surfaces, the Br atom have located at the end of the main polymer chains, and the polymerization process possessed the characteristic of controlled/"living" polymerization. The SNPs-g-PS-b-PHEMA-co-PHEMA-RhB hybrid materials show good fluorescence performance and good dispersion in water and EtOH but aggregated in THF. This study demonstrates that the SI-ARGET ATRP provided a unique way to tune the polymer brushes structure on silica nanoparticles surface and further broaden the application of SI-ARGET ATRP.
